Read up on Shelley and AJax

Two stories you should enjoy:

Tara Sullivan of The Record did a piece on Shelley Duncan. The Excitable Boy is crushing the ball in AAA but to no avail so far.

Tyler Kepner didn’t go to Cleveland (smart move), but he did go to Scranton and wrote a great feature on Austin Jackson. As a fan of Tyler’s writing and AJax’s game, it was terrific.

Ty also used the interwebs well and did a good blog post on Austin over on Bats.

One bonus of having the AA and AAA teams so close by is that fans get good coverage of the prospects. Plus Chad Jennings and Mike Ashmore do such good work on the day-to-day stuff.

I actually kinda like having the AA and AAA teams further away. I sort of enjoy the mystery of some of the young prospects as they emerge from the middle of nowhere. I know it’s a little impractical, but I always enjoyed that in the past.

  2. Jon Ringland June 3rd, 2009 at 3:11 pm

LOVE being so close to the farm teams. Got to see Wang, Hughes, Gardner etc in Trenton before they ever made it to the bigs. WAY back when I even got to see Derek Jeter in Greensboro NC before he was a big leaguer. Such a great value too, as the tix tend to be dirt cheap and there’s not a bad seat in the house.

  3. sunny615 June 3rd, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Maybe they should have a nice box nearby for suggestions on what to do with Wang.

““I’m probably going to be a guy that you haven’t really seen before,” he said. “To me, I think of it as Jeter. I don’t really see anybody else that does the types of things Jeter does. He’s his own player.”

interesting quote from ajax…i wouldnt mind another jeter lol..but in centerfield!

Michael Kay is the biggest Yankee leak here.

He just revealed what GI Joe told Tex after he was hit

“Don’t worry we’ll take care of it”

He saids the team is taking on GI Joe’s edge. And that this team now has a nasty streak.

I appreciate the kid’s confidence, but lets cool off on the jeter references for the time being.

    SJ44,

Here’s what Callis had to say today:

The Mattrolater: Are these rumors of Sanchez going to the Pirates true?? If so, looks like they’re reverting right back to their old ways.

Jim Callis : (2:23 PM ET ) There’s talk that the Pirates could save money at No. 4 to spend internationally, but why shift money to get players who will take longer to develop? I’ve had other people tell me they don’t believe this is true. If they do take Sanchez, that’s worse than taking Daniel Moskos at No. 4. At least Moskos was a top-10 talent. Sanchez is a wonderful defender with an iffy bat, and should go toward the end of the first round.

Hope he’s wrong (unless Tony doesn’t want to be a Pirate, which I can understand). The advantage of being a late 1st rounder is he’ll wind up on a better team.

  8. SJ44 June 3rd, 2009 at 3:17 pm

He’s right. This team has been too soft the past few years.

Its not soft now and that’s a good thing.

    Brandon,

Is Kay’s radio program broadcast on the internet?

  10. Brandon.. Hughes took your spot WANG ! June 3rd, 2009 at 3:19 pm

type 1050espn radio, there should be a link to his show.

I thought Kay was reading Joe’s lips as he was escorting tex to first – not leaking

Ha ha, that monologue by Kay was awesome. this is a different team with an ‘edge’.

  13. Trevor June 3rd, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Girardi didn’t tell him “Don’t worry we’ll take care of it” Kay just read Girardi’s lips. Another poster mentioned this last night.

There’s worse things for a catcher to be than a Randy Hundley/Jim Sundberg/AJ Pierzynski (minus attitude) type player on a top team.

I agree. The Yanks are ready to rumble

  21. Bob(The Original) June 3rd, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Moose was great, but you think he would have thrown at Cruz last night?

  22. SJ44 June 3rd, 2009 at 3:27 pm

    Clare,

I will be able to go into more detail after the draft.

    The reality though is this…..

If the Pirates are fair with their offer, he would be honored to go there and help turn things around.

    If it works out, great.

If not? There are 29 other teams he would love to go to and will play his butt off for any of them.

The kid has a great attitude about it.

Mom, we have to medicate right now! lol

Tony? Just going with the flow, which is the best way to handle it.

  23. C June 3rd, 2009 at 3:28 pm

WE have this so called “edge” because we have guys in our rotation willing to hit someone back

  24. GreenBeret7 June 3rd, 2009 at 3:29 pm

Maybe somebody can clear this up, but, has Jeter lost a little size in the upper body, because, although he’s lost that half a step (due to age), he looks more loose and flexible in the field, in particular.

    ————————————————————

Perhaps the ever-vigilant, eagle-eyed ladies are better able to answer this. They seem to be more observant about things like this.

Refreshing. One of the reasons im pro Girardi. Defend and protect your players at all times. Dont miss the camera shots at the excessive nose digging during games.

    Stultus,
Didnt Pettittes wife want to go back to Texas? Im not sure that they could have kept him in 03.

  26. gayle June 3rd, 2009 at 3:30 pm

So Sweeny just posted that Burnett may get suspended for throwing at Cruz last night a la Beckett. SO to me it sounds like a total plan he will get 6 like Beckett then have ti reduced to 5. he will therefore miss a start so who better to take that start than Wang.

See the Yankees really do have a plan lol.

  27. C June 3rd, 2009 at 3:31 pm

“Moose was great, but you think he would have thrown at Cruz last night?”

nah moose wont throw at anyone

  28. GreenBeret7 June 3rd, 2009 at 3:31 pm

“The Yankees? You know they got an edge.”

    Jeter’s been selling cars, again.

  29. Clare June 3rd, 2009 at 3:32 pm

    SJ,

After the draft, how about asking Pete to let you do a guest post? (just don’t tell him I suggested it. :) )

  30. SJ44 June 3rd, 2009 at 3:32 pm

As far as “taking longer to develop”, I disagree.

Frank Ramos, MLB Scouting Director, said on the MLB Network last night that defensively, Tony can catch in the majors RIGHT NOW. That has also been said to me by several scouts.

That’s not a slow developer, IMO.

His bat? He has a power bat. There are very, very few Mauer’s and Posada’s (superior offensive talents) behind the plate in baseball these days.

That’s what makes Montero such an intriguing prospect.

His calling card are his defensive skills and his makeup. Both are off the charts.

His bat? Get him with a solid hitting coach at the minor league level, and he will be in the majors in 2-2 1/2 years, IMO.

  31. Bob(The Original) June 3rd, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Are you related to Sanchez SJ44?

  32. edzilla: Melky and a Pron Star? June 3rd, 2009 at 3:36 pm

I had to share this because I wouldn’t have believed it myself if there wasn’t video evidence. A shirtless Melky Cabrera being interviewed in a hotel room by a woman rumored to be porn star and former California gubernatorial candidate, Mary Carey. This is not a joke. Link below.

    Bob,

    I’m his uncle.

  35. Jon Ringland June 3rd, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Good for Michael Kay and his bit on beanball today. Couldn’t agree more. How many times did Jeter get plunked while Torre slept in the dugout. Im not a proponent of throwing at people for the hell of it (like Padilla), but for god’s sake a little fire here! Ortiz used to OWN the plate and no one would back him off. Well not anymore, brother.

  36. Erik Sec. 309 June 3rd, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Shelly has to be better than Beroa….That guy looks lost these days. Duncan may not give us anything defensively, but he is a valuable bat to have in a late inning pinch hit situation.

  37. J-Boogie June 3rd, 2009 at 3:55 pm

You could easily make out Girardi’s comments to Teixeira during last night’s broadcast. I’m not the greatest lip-reader in the world but it was pretty easy to make out.

I loved seeing it. Torre’s Yankees would have rolled over and left it alone. Girardi makes a lot of stupid moves but this one I liked. It’ll probably come back to bite him in the rump since it was caught on TV.

  38. Stultus Magnus June 3rd, 2009 at 3:56 pm

“Didnt Pettittes wife want to go back to Texas? Im not sure that they could have kept him in 03.”

Honestly, I’m not sure about that. Pettitte made 11.5 million in ’03 and won 21 games. He won game 2 of the WS giving up 1 unearned run in 8.2 innings. He pitched game 6 going 7 innings and giving up 1 earned run, getting the L.

The Yanks offered him 39 million for 3 years, or 13 million a year. If that wasn’t sufficient to keep Pettitte, they should have offered more. He’s a gamer.

  40. jvcelt June 3rd, 2009 at 4:17 pm

so what.. mr jackson is an upgrade over melky and gardner. that is what matters… the rest is funny stuff… mary is a beautiful, voluptous woman who does it for me. but austin does it for me in cf in 2110. he makes us better and is another piece of the puzzle.

  41. tim boat June 3rd, 2009 at 4:24 pm

    Austin Jackson=OVERRATED

who needs an outfielder with no power whatsoever and prolly only above average speed.

  42. tim boat June 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pm

no power and only decent speed = he’ll fit right in with Melk dud, or Gardner who has speed but can’t hit.

just because a player is young doesn’t mean he’s any good.

  43. jvcelt June 3rd, 2009 at 4:34 pm

the man is 11/11 stealing.. hitting about .340 with a lot of doubles (translates to power)… he is a significant upgrade over melky(shirtless or no)/gardner. this is what we need in cf. settle on 2 corner ofs, a dh and we r set for 10 years. let it be said 1st here.. another dynasty. wang is in, hughes in the pen

  44. Doreen June 3rd, 2009 at 4:47 pm

    Jon Ringland -

What Ajax was trying to say was that Jeter was his own player and he is his own player. He wasn’t saying he was like Jeter as a player, I thought. He was told some of the players that he is being compared with, and he said he was just himself. As Jeter is himself, unlike other players.

  45. blackaccord June 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 pm

mike francessa thinks that the news is true only if he sees it or wfan knows about it.. a caller called in and informed that padilla was released according to peter gammons and Mike called the news as bs and he didnt see it anywhere.. Pete ofcourse has the same news..

  46. zxcvb June 3rd, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Shelley Duncan has reached the AAAA level. He’s pushing 30 and tearing up the minors; the Yanks owe to Duncan (and themselves) to bring him up or trade him.
