A few updates …

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 05, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The rotation:

Saturday vs. Tampa: Sabathia
Sunday vs. Tampa: Chamberlain
Monday vs. Tampa: Pettitte
Tuesday at Boston: Burnett
Wednesday at Boston: Wang
Thursday at Boston: Sabathia
Friday vs. Mets: Chamberlain
Saturday vs. Mets: Pettitte
Sunday vs. Mets: Burnett

Rehabs: Brian Bruney threw fastballs and change-ups in the bullpen today and felt fine. Or, given his history, he claimed he felt fine. He’ll need to build up for a while. … Damaso Marte (the Yankees have a player named Damaso Marte?) threw a bullpen in Tampa. … Xavier Nady threw again in Florida and played in an extended spring game.

Next Saturday is Pettitte vs. Livan

    Can’t wait

  2. Rockks June 5th, 2009 at 5:53 pm

“I don’t like the pie,” Cabrera said through an interpreter. “I was waiting, I thought it was coming from someplace, I just didn’t know when.”

    lol love the Melk Man

  3. Scorpio June 5th, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Burnett vs Beckett? Hopefully AJ doesn’t cough up a 6-run lead!

  4. Joe June 5th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

    Melky bangs porn stars, eh.

  5. randy l. June 5th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

“Next Saturday is Pettitte vs. Livan”

    man, talk about conflicted.

  6. Ace June 5th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Excellent. This rain out did wonders for our rotation. We get Wang vs Wakefield and he misses the Mets series completely.

  7. Joe June 5th, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Again with this ‘rainouts are great for the rotation’…what a bunch of numbskulls here.

Oh yea, its going to be great during the stretch run when the bullpen is depleted.

    Fools.

  8. V Torch June 5th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

    Joba vs. Maine
    Pettitte vs. Livan
    Burnett vs. Santana

    We miss Redding, unfortunately.

  9. Ace June 5th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

No need to take personal shots Joe. If you have nothing useful to add then just refrain from typing.

  10. jennifer June 5th, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Here come the complainers, that don’t like how the rotation is set up. t minus

  11. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

I do not like making AJ wait 7 days to pitch….that’s just too many days. I don’t get it.

  12. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Jen, I think I have a valid point……I’m not complaining just to complain.

  13. jennifer June 5th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I wonder if Joe told Brian if he lied he would kick his butt.

  14. jennifer June 5th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

CC is pitching on a weeks rest tomorrow. Someone else was going to have to do it, and I guess they thought AJ could handle it.

All these rainouts are killing this team considering they are on such a nice streak, than the lack of off days later in the season will become a problem.

  15. Drain003 June 5th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

    jennifer,

    I hope so LOL

  16. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

I would have paid any price to see AJ chasing Melky around…….however, since Melky clearly doesn’t enjoy this ritual, perhaps AJ shouldn’t attempt it again.

Good news on the injury front……I don’t want to see Bruney for another week after they say he’s good to go, just to be sure.

  17. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:09 pm

That is, he shouldn’t attempt it on Melky.

  18. Mark June 5th, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Burnett is probably the worst type of pitcher to give extra rest to. His curveball command is so important to what he does. If he doesn’t have it, he’s dead, especially against a good team. He has nothing else to fall back on.

He better hope he isin’t rusty out of the gate.

  19. Rafael June 5th, 2009 at 6:11 pm

    Swisher on Twitter:

NickSwisher Nice weather. Hahaha. 2 tomorrow. Let’s get them both

  20. SJ44 June 5th, 2009 at 6:11 pm

    Betsy,

AJ throws more pitches than almost any starter in baseball. Any time you can give jim extra rest, you do it.

That’s how you keep him healthy.

  21. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Jen, I didn’t realize CC was also pitching on 7 days rest. AJ will have to deal with it – I’m not saying he won’t pitch well, but it’s just not ideal.

Eh, I don’t mind a rain out……this happens to teams all the time. I would, however, play a DH later in the season instead of playing on a day off.

  22. Yanks 99 June 5th, 2009 at 6:11 pm

This could all be avoided if he threw his changeup. Then he wouldn’t need to worry about his curve being off from the extra rest

  23. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

I do not like making AJ wait 7 days to pitch….that’s just too many days. I don’t get it.

    ————————————————————

Burnett threw a lot of pitches in those two back-back Texas games. Also 8- of 11 games over 100 pitches. The two extra games may refresh him. Texas, no matter how well you pitch always keeps the pressure on to be nearly perfect.

  24. Jordan June 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Funny how the rotation now lines up as far as effectiveness so far this year.

  25. Joe June 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Ace, it wasnt a personal shot, just pointing out fan stupidity.

  26. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

That’s a good point, SJ…….I don’t know what AJ’s history on extended rest is, though. He may pitch very poorly as I can see him (or any pitcher) being rusty. I just hope he can put his last start in Fenway behind him. He’d been dominant there in the past – now that he’s got his first start there as Yankee out of the way, I hope he’ll be a lot more relaxed. I certainly don’t expect Beckett to give up 8 runs again

  27. ham_fighters June 5th, 2009 at 6:14 pm

hey all! first time in here im weeks. it got so bad in here in april i just stopped coming, thank god nobody that matters read the ‘fire joe’, ‘cut arod’ and ‘trade melky’ crap that i kept reading here back then! things are looking good.

complaining about rain-outs? i suppose cashman (the incompetent) should have done something about that..

  28. Trev Sey June 5th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

This has been probably the worst season in years as far as weather is concerned.. it’s like Seattle.

It seems that everyday it is raining or there is a chance of rain.

How many games at the stadium has it been sunny? Players probably hate it.

  29. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

    True, GB….

Well, maybe AJ can alter his routine a bit – throw some more in a pen session and maybe even come in for an inning in relief? I know Andy used to do that……..

  30. pat June 5th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

“NickSwisher Nice weather. Hahaha. 2 tomorrow. Let’s get them both”

Is Nick playing in a little league game tomorrow because I though there was no DH?

  31. jennifer June 5th, 2009 at 6:16 pm

Either swish is off is rocker, or he heard there is a double header.

  32. DB - (officially panicked 5/13/09) June 5th, 2009 at 6:17 pm

This rotation is going to be moot once AJ’s suspension takes place. I don’t know why they bothered. The question is when does AJ have his hearing, Pete?

  33. Zac June 5th, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Damaso Marte = relief Carl Pavano?

  34. jennifer June 5th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

db- there are times when it takes weeks. Knowing Watson he’ll hear it right before the sox series.

  35. Trevor June 5th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

“Either swish is off is rocker, or he heard there is a double header”

With Swisher I would guess the former.

  36. ham_fighters June 5th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

fracessa said burnett’s hearing wont be till after the mets series, so we’re good to go for the devil rays, socks and mutts.

  37. Joe June 5th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Nick Swisher is a clown with a horrible bat.

  38. KGsturnz0r June 5th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

    ————————————————————

Pettitte has said that he’d prefer that 5 or 6 games a year to pitching in the bullpen…that he doesn’t go through the motions in games. If more pitchers would do that on throw days, imagine how much that would lengrhen the pen and keep the bullpenners fresh and effective.

  40. Joe Veras - World Series MVP June 5th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Hey when are Bruney and Marte coming back?

  41. Jose Veras - World Series MVP June 5th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

    Boo Ya

  42. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

    would lengrhen the pen

It would ***lengthen*** the pen, also

  43. R-Tek June 5th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

The last Beckett/Burnett game was wild

    Up 6-0
    Down 8-6
    Tied 8-8
    Down 9-8
    Up 10-9
    Down 12-10
    Down 12-11

    And eventually lost 16-11

  44. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

  46. DB - (officially panicked 5/13/09) June 5th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

Jennifer, it never takes weeks when its the Yanks and Watson. The MLB offices are in NYC and the Yanks are in town, I wouldn’t be suprised if his hearing is on Monday.

  47. jennifer June 5th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

    ————————————————————

Yes, as a relief pitcher. The next year, the made him a starter and he won 19 games and completely shut down the Yanks in the ’07 playoffs. He’s an exact copy of a healthy CM Wang. Big fastball and hard, heavy sinker.

  50. Monnie D June 5th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Wang at Fenway on Wednesday, eh? All those runs he shaved off his ERA as a reliever he’ll earn right back in the first two innings.

Is there any way we can put in a DOUBLE HEADER this weekend! Wouldn’t that be advantageous for us cause we can just put Hughes in??

  55. dave June 5th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Wang in Boston is a mistake. Now because it has a 15-2 loss written all over it, but because I fear it will slow the progress the poor guy is making mentally.

  56. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

  58. The Monk June 5th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Don’t worry about Hughes. He’ll be pitching in about the third inning either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Here’s what I don’t understand – if you are going to be negative about a game not yet played – why not go all out?

    Why 15-2?

Why not – the Yankees will lose 153-0, setting a MLB record.

Not only will Wang get bombed, Swisher will have to pitch and his 0.00 ERA will sky-rocket to 178.33.

While the Yanks bat in the 9th – (without a batted ball in play all day of course) – locusts will invade the field while buzzards fly overhead.

  64. Doreen June 5th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

I get to see Joba vs. the Mets next Friday – barring unforeseen “whatevers.” :)

    Yay!

  65. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

GB, that makes sense……my only reservation about using SPs that way would be if they got knocked around. Who’s to say they would have an easy inning – they can’t throw that many pitches, correct? How many do they usually throw in a pen session?

  66. Doreen June 5th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

GB & Betsy, there is no reason why on occasion that when the rotations guy throw their side bullpen sessions that they cannot toss an inning or two….Especially if their last outing was short….Side sessions have become so laxed now a days….

Of course, it’s now stopped raining, at least in LI.

I wonder if the decision to postpone was made by Yanks with an eye on the schedule, and the number of days without a day off.

    ————————————————————

Not sure of the exact numbers, but, two 20 pitch innings plus warmups would seem about right. Again, Randy and PAT M would be more familiar with exact numbers. I doubt that they’d throw more than 25 pitches in relief and probably just the one inning, unless they had one of those 6-10 pitch innings.

  80. Doreen June 5th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

    S.A.

Thank you for reminding me of the O’Neill banner! Now, I’m going to have to explain it to the husband.

  81. Benny Blanco June 5th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

Yankees will be facing a more confident beckett this time around.

I’m confident( I hope) that burnett will make up for his disasterous start last time in fenway.

With regards to #13, i’m sure the syringe sponges will be out and in full effect.

  82. Joe from Long Island June 5th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

Looking at the names in the projected rotation Pete put up there….

Makes you long for the days gone by, when names like Rasner, Redding, Ponson, Geise, Clippard, DeSalvo and Igawa made up 40% of the starts. You know, the good old days. And, somehow, they still made the playoffs. Amazing. Makes you think we should be able to do it this year. But, the sub-geniuses know better.

    Joe from LI

I was telling my husband that we are probably going to see Joba next Friday, and he said, there’s really no pitcher in that rotation that you wouldn’t be excited to see. It’s great. Now, results are not guaranteed, obviously, but it’s nice not to feel going in that it would be a lucky day if you win. Imagine how the players feel this year as opposed to last. :)

  85. Jose Veras - World Series MVP June 5th, 2009 at 7:30 pm

Wang will get up to 90 pitches on Tuesday..by the third inning. At least he will be building up arm strength.

  86. Pat M June 5th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

GB, As you know I wasn’t a party to battery operations, however I thought the side sessions were 2 reps of 25 pitches….Now remember I played in 71-73, and much has changed….It’s most likely they’ve been trimmed back to 2 reps of 20 pitches…Pitchers always were pampered, even back then…..Spoiled lot they are…..

  87. Sean Serritella June 5th, 2009 at 7:32 pm

This is going to be some week for the Yankees. First, Tampa, who are a good team, then Boston, our biggest rivals and then the week ends playing the Mets. Wow.

Doreen – Oh, I think the players love it.

I think you’re going to like the new place. In terms of food, the Lobel steak sandwich stand, just to the right when you enter via Gate 8 (where we go in) serves a pretty good steak sandwich (Wagyu beef, medium rare, $15). I can also recommend the pulled pork sandwich. My friend liked the footlong hot dog, thought I’ve not tried it yet.

Let me know what you find that’s good.

I need to get on a tour. I really want to see the museum, but I don’t want to take time out during a game.

  91. Joe from Long Island June 5th, 2009 at 7:44 pm

I must confess, I have the Mets’ game turned on while we prepare dinner. I’m not watching anywhere near as intently, of course. If it’s between the Mets and dinner, guess which one wins.

More like intelligent fans who vividly recall Wang getting his Wang whacked in Fenway before.

He’s a nervous pitcher anyhow and he just can’t handle pitching vs Boston at Fenway.

    Dear Editor,

It really pisses the people in St. Petersburg when you say we are playing Tampa. TB does not stand for tuberculous.

And the Rangers beat Boston, Penny gave up five runs. Milwood pitched well.

It would have been nice to have Sabathia’s bat in interleague play lol
