    damn!

  5. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

I’m fine with this – I don’t care if the weather does clear up later on. It won’t be great out and the field can’t be in good conditions. The Yankees made the right move here. I would prefer they play a DH whenever instead of giving up another day off.

  6. Guy Incognito June 5th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Good job by the Yankees not cynically pile all of us in, charge us $20 to park, fill us up with beer, and send us home…

Well, at least we can stop debating about it.

  9. Sean Serritella June 5th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

    This means CC starts tomorrow.

  10. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Who’s putting chemistry above talent? I, for one, have always said that talent trumps anything else…….hey, Leo didn’t throw any cold water on me. I’m enjoying this team more than I have in a long time……..yes, even including the most recent playoff teams.

Glad to know you approve Betsy

  12. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I guess it’s for the best to avoid injury.

    What time is tomorrow’s game?

  13. Zolio June 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Would be foolish to give up another off-day late in the season.

We already gave away one September off-day for the LA game, and another in July.

Just play a doubleheader. We’ve played doubleheaders before. We played one against the Rays in 07 actually.

  14. Steve June 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

good thing they’re letting us know. i don’t know what everyone was thinking that this game was going to get played?

  15. matthew frags June 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

YES! Now Wang doesn’t have to start the first game in BOS (against Beckett)!

  16. Erica - newly OPPC June 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

    Whats on TV tonight?

  17. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

This is one of the most interesting seasons I’ve ever experienced first hand.

  18. Jason June 5th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

I would think they would have immediately announced a doubleheader. My guess is they want to clear it for September 10th.

  19. R+ June 5th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Pettitte and Wang in Fenway…. just great.

  20. Matthew B. June 5th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

    I echo those thoughts.

  21. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

    Pettite owns the Sox.

  22. Kevin in the 908 June 5th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Blessing in disguise. Wang was going to have to pitch the Boston series anyway so it is probably better that is not the first game of it.

  23. Trevor June 5th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Sabathia on 2 days extra rest. I hope for double header tomorrow. They have a lot of West coast trips late in the year and it’s not ideal to be playing a make up game in September. Especially when you have 2 (Oakland Anaheim) to make up already.

  24. Jamal G. June 5th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

“YES! Now Wang doesn’t have to start the first game in BOS (against Beckett)!”

    Yeah, now Andy Pettitte will.

  25. good call June 5th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

    good call on cancellation

better than going all the way down there and having the game rained out or sitting there in the rain for all that ticket $$$
any idea on make up date?

  26. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 5th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

    “Whats on TV tonight?”

Well, let’s see. It’s the summer so the regular primetime season is over (no LOST until Jan 2010 – UGH!!!!!) and it’s Friday, which never has anything good on to begin with anyway. Hence, the answer to your question is “whatever DVD you put into your player”. :P

  27. Cal June 5th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Great another rainout isn’t this the third one, they are sure borrowing time, because those games will mean fewer off days later on. No way they are playing a doubleheader, they will move it to September 10th.

I remember that doubleheader. We started Kei Igawa and Matt DeSalvo. LOL. And somehow Jose Visciano ended up with two wins that day. How much can change in less than two years?

  29. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

We’ll just have to deal with the rotation in Boston – I’m not giving any game up.

  30. Tom June 5th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Wang – In his career, yes.

Lately? Not so much. Someone posted his game logs this morning and they were brutal.

  31. DB - (officially panicked 5/13/09) June 5th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

my first guess was right on the money

  32. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

What will the trolls and whiners complain about, tonight? They may need to be put on resperators? I suppose they could cry because those cheap old Steinbrenners refused to put a dome on the park. Of course, that’s like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa.

  33. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

I don’t see any reason the Yankees won’t play a DH – they can’t afford to give up any more days off

  34. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

If they reschedule for September, aren’t the Yankees looking at only having one day off in that month? That can’t be good.

Yipes. I am pretty sure I have a movie or two saved on my DVR I have been trying to find time to watch. Tonight sounds like a great night for that.

  36. Homer June 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Our late August schedule through September is brutal, travel-wise. 13 games on the West Coast.

We need every extra off-day we can get. This is an older team. We actually go to the West Coast a week after we play the Rays in September.

  37. Stuckey June 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

A Saturday doubleheader? That means a day game, night game, then another day game in 30 hours?

    Doubt that very much.

  40. chazzh June 5th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Let’s hope they play 2 tomorrow.

The Yanks have 6 starters right now – so the extra game wont hurt them as much. Plus, the Rays are so beat up. They will be a different team in September.

  41. Rebecca-Optimist Prime June 5th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

I’ve got a book I’ve been trying to start so I can do that tonight. Stephen King’s The Gunslinger. It’s the first book in the Dark Tower series. I hope it’s as good as I’ve heard.

  43. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Tom, his last start vs. Boston was fine. 6 innings (I believe, maybe 7) 4 runs, only 3 earned. And this was no “he’s getting owned might as well be an earned run”. This was legitimate unearned run.

  44. X-Mann June 5th, 2009 at 4:20 pm

If we give up the September 10th off-day, that means we play 40 games in 42 days.

I actually do think they should have put a dome on the park, but whatever.

  47. Clark June 5th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Well, they can’t reschedule it on September 10th, that means we would be playing 23 games in a row. We’d have to approve it.

(We have an off-day on August 24th and wouldn’t have one again until September 17th)

  48. Erica - newly OPPC June 5th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Pete, can you post Oscar the Grouch again when posting sad rain out news? It would make it so much cuter :-)

  49. Kevin in the 908 June 5th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Fa fa flooey that is an interesting idea in theory, but his appeal is not scheduled for a couple of weeks from now and it is a six game suspension.

  50. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 5th, 2009 at 4:23 pm

“I actually do think they should have put a dome on the park, but whatever.”

You probably should have kept that to yourself. I mentioned that on here early on and got killed for it.

  51. saucy June 5th, 2009 at 4:23 pm

i’ve barely seen rain all day here.

could be because i don’t have windows in my office though.

it was nice on the drive in. kind of a mist/drizzle when i was out for lunch.

sad the game was called. just looked at radar and it sure looked like it would clear up, along with the forecast…

  52. Rachel June 5th, 2009 at 4:23 pm

They might choose to play a double header later on in the season and not use an off day. It makes more sense then losing another off day.

  53. SJ44 June 5th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

They don’t need a dome. Its a rainout. Not the end of the world.

Personally, I think its good the team has a day off.

They won’t play a DH tomorrow. If they were, that would have been announced immediately.

If the biggest challenge this team has to overcome this year are rainouts, they are in good shape.

Sometimes, some of you overanalyize situations.

These guys are baseball players. Rainouts are part of the deal.

  54. R-Tek June 5th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

They could play a DH during that September series.

They can’t use that off-day though, as it would be over the limit and we’d be playing more than 20 games in a row.

  55. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

    I vote for DH

Baseball is meant to be played outside

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains

  58. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

SJ4, we’ve had lots of rainouts and postponements of games due to rain. A dome would be nice.

  59. V June 5th, 2009 at 4:26 pm

At least we dont have to be subjected to seeing Wang vs the Sox

  60. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:26 pm

Not being done now. Because of the rain.

Boston finished it’s west Coast trips by the middle of May

We still have to play 16 games on the West Coast, 13 of them in late August and late September.

    How is that fair?

i guess you missed the part where sometimes it rains

  67. Stuckey June 5th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

If they play a DH this series it will be on Sun or Monday, that way it works out to be day-day/night-night over the three days.

As I say, no way there are scheduling a day/night doubleheader and then following that up with a day game.

There has to be 24 hour break bookending both ends of the DH.

  68. Uncle Ellsworth (Expert texpert choking smokers don't you think the joker laughs at you?) June 5th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

    Wait!
What does this mean for DEBORAH?

  69. randy l. June 5th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

“PAT M, I asked you, SJ and Randy (who’s more interested in making a living than hanging out with us) about the unusually high number of catcher’s interference calls that Austin Romine had had in his 80 games as a pro catcher,”

    gb7-

that’s it . i’m withholding a portion of my taxes as a protest to having it go to you to goof off.

so romine has a problem with catcher’s interference. maybe he’s cheating up too quick on stolen bases or just simply getting too close to the plate. it’s odd though to have that many. you hardly ever see it.

i got good at ticking a hitter’s back swing while they were waiting for a pitch. the ump misses it usually( i never got caught doing it) , but it totally throws the hitter off. the only downside is he’s the one with the bat in his hand :)

a high number of past balls is probably because of too much ole-ing the ball(especially on the backhand) and not having good footwork and getting the body in front of the ball.

a good defensive catcher should be able to block most balls in the dirt without a mitt. it has to become second nature to use your chest to knock the ball down on bounces.

there’s also a point where you have to make a decision to flip your mitt down. you automatically lose the strike call when you do it, so many catchers get in the bad habit of riding the mitt all the way to the ground before flipping or they don’t flip at all.

if romine is doing that it’d be easy to see. going to a catchers left can be tricky too. you can ride your arm out to the left without turning your elbow and the mitt only to a point and if you try to go further you get stuck in no man’s land and can simply miss pitches.

again, once you flip the mitt you lose any ability to frame the pitch and the ump will call it a ball. it’s just a lot of practice knowing when to flip the mitt and having a good catching coach doesn’t hurt.

  70. m June 5th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Good call. But that makes 3 makeup games.

So, the only thing we can do is cheer for Texas.

LOL @ people in the last thread bringing up what happened in past years when talking about this team.

Even if this weren’t a roster that’s been turned over close to 50%, every year is different. Every game is different for that matter.

Which brings up something else. Why are people worried about what’s going to happen when such and such a pitcher goes against such and such a team next week or the week after that?

mind as well live in the moment because at this point, our rotation is not set. And the weather and pending suspensions could affect a lot of things.

Personally, I’m enjoying each game so much that I don’t worry about the next game until the current one is done. These guys have been such a pleasure to watch, baseball is fun again. I’ve always looked forward to matchups and try to guess what might happen. But this group’s so much fun, I’ve adopted their own philosophy of concentrating on one game at a time.

“Sometimes, some of you overanalyize situations. These guys are baseball players. Rainouts are part of the deal.”

SJ44, do you remember 2005? BOS went to the playoffs after having played 30 or so straight days of baseball (because of makeup games). They ended up losing to CWS. I remember saying back then that they lost because they were tired (well, that coupled with CWS’s pitching). If they had been on fresher legs, they might have won that series. So to say that losing off days isn’t a big deal is a bit of a stretch.

  74. Ron June 5th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

  77. Erica - newly OPPC June 5th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

  78. 7*7 June 5th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

They can’t play a DH on Sundsy because of the Sunday Night Baseball restrictions right?

  79. Stuckey June 5th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

Yeah I agree, I think the Yanks should have invested in one. Just my opinion…

    =======================

An “investment” implies a profit down the line. You know how many games need to be rained out to justify the %500m expense?

Probably more than we’ll see in our lifetimes.

  80. Nat June 5th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Francessa is giddy that the game was called. Says it helps us enormously that Andy gets to pitch the Boston and Mets game.

  81. SJ44 June 5th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

    3 makeup games isn’t a big deal.

A dome for a stadium that size is another 200 million dollars. A retractable roof? About another 30 million more for the mechanics/computer system to operate.

They don’t need a dome for an extra 200-230 million dollars.

Rainouts are part of the game. If you are worried about rainouts, then you have no confidence in your team.

Its all part of baseball and its something fans more than players fret over.

In this case, it just gives the folks who constantly complain about the lineups something else to complain about today.

Personally, I think its good the team has a day off. They don’t have another one until June 15. Getting one now helps more than hurts.

  82. Al from BK June 5th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Very concerned if Wang, Pettitte are 2 of the 3 in Boston.

  83. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Andy pitches well vs. the Sox, I know. Mutts, not sure. Can someone look that up?

  84. Al June 5th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

    So the matchups should be

    CC vs. Price
    Joba vs. Garza
    Burnett vs. Sonnenstein
    Pettitte vs. Beckett
    Wang vs. Wakefield
    CC vs. Penny
    Joba vs. Maine
    Burnett vs. Livan
    Petttite vs. Santana

  85. Pat M June 5th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup ) , Austin cheats back there or at least he did in HS….He needs to go to see Cheryl Burke ( Dancing with the stars ) and get lighter on his feet…..Until then making it as a catcher in the bigs is going to be tough….Kid has a great arm, and can flat out hit…..

I also remember a Yankee team losing 17 of their last 21 games in 2000 and then winning the World Series.

You can take numbers and situations and do anything you want with them.

  88. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

At least we got CC going vs. the Sox.

  89. Kevin in the 908 June 5th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

I actually think it does Nat…I would rather have Wang pitch Game two of the Boston series as opposed to Game one if you ask me. Right now Wang does need so many pressure filled games as he is just coming back and pitching two pressure filled games in a row might not have been the greatest thing in the universe for him.

  90. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

    gb7-

that’s it . i’m withholding a portion of my taxes as a protest to having it go to you to goof off.

    ————————————————————

LMAO. Thanks, Randy. I was thinking that maybe he was “cheating” to get to the balls before they hit the dirt. I just thought that he would be better off moving to a corner outfield, because this is going on for 2 seasons, now, with the large amount of errors and passed balls.

The thing that really concerns me is that now we are agreeing on something. I’m scared.

  92. CT23 June 5th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Why not play 2 on Monday?

  93. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

A dome? Hideous………..a DH later in the season would be fine. I understand that teams rarely sweep DHs and it’s not great for an older team, but days off are precious…

  94. Joe I June 5th, 2009 at 4:38 pm

    SJ,
I just wanted to wish you and your nephew, Tony, the best of luck for Tuesday’s draft. Hopefully, he ends up in a good organization that will do right by him and his progress as a player.

  95. Rolex June 5th, 2009 at 4:38 pm

    Pettitte last 2 years

    08 vs. BOS – 7.04 ERA
    08 vs. NYM – 3.75 ERA

    07 vs. BOS – 5.24 ERA
    07 vs. NYM – 3.86 ERA

Though he only made 1 start in 07 and 2 starts in 08 vs. the Mets

    ——————–

Fans have got to realize players who play the game don’t perceive the same “pressure” that fans and the media do.

You might be surprised how ‘normally’ players approach an early June series against the Sox.

  98. SJ44 June 5th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Thanks Joe I, I appreciate it.

Its going to be a fun few days. Tuesday can’t come fast enough for us.

  99. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 5th, 2009 at 4:41 pm

“You can take numbers and situations and do anything you want with them.”

Very true. That doesn’t change the fact that days off are precious, especially for a team loaded with older players like we are. I’m not trying to change your mind because you’ve proven that it’s an unmovable object. :P

    Just stating my case.

  100. Seymore June 5th, 2009 at 4:41 pm

I’m not worried about Andy imploding in Boston. He will give you his usual 6 IP, 4 ER performance.

The question is, will that be enough vs. Beckett?

Wang in Fenway is going to be a disaster. We should hit Wakefield, but can Wang and our bullpen hold down Boston enough?

Pedroia, Ellsbury, Bay, Youkallis, Lowell etc. all bat like .500 against us.

  101. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Pettite did fine vs. Boston earlier in the year.

  104. Stultus Magnus June 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

I’m sure some people thought baseball wasn’t meant to be played with lights at night.

But I don’t like domes, I can live with a few rainouts and few more delays a year.

  105. Yank1 June 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Sabathia on 6 days rest. Hope he doesn’t come out rusty.

Joba and Burnett each on 5 days rest.

  106. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Who matches up against Beckett in that first game?

I’m hardly thrilled about the road schedule, but on the other hand, good teams overcome that…….It will be incumbent upon Joe to rest some guys here and there, that’s all. If the pitching does well, then so will the Yankees.

  107. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

I’m calling it: vs. Beckett, perfect game, Andy Pettite.

    :-)

  108. Stuckey June 5th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

I understand that teams rarely sweep DHs
    ————————

Has that every been documented? I would bet if any research exists it would show that a team winning, losing or splitting consecutive games of a DH statistically varies very little from a team winning, losing or splitting any traditional consecutive game scenario.

  109. pat June 5th, 2009 at 4:43 pm

  110. Dr. J June 5th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Wang vs. Sox – Yeah, he did alright that game, but the offense fell asleep

Beckett has been on a roll lately, we may not score many off him.

  111. Tom in N.J. June 5th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

If the three make-up games happen in august at least the rosters will be expanded by then.

No need to burn out the staff.

  112. Dan June 5th, 2009 at 4:45 pm

Kind of pointless to whine about the rotation… it’s not ideal, but there is nothing we can do about it.

The offense is just going to have to step up in a big way in Fenway. And they can’t rely on rallies against the #1 ranked bullpen in baseball. They have to hit the starters.

  113. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 4:45 pm

And Padilla doesn’t get suspended……..there are no words strong enough to describe how I feel about Butthead Watson

  114. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

If Pettite gives us a shot to win, we’ll have to see what we can do vs. Beckett.

If Beckett is great he’s great, but you can say that about any pitcher so why worry?

Guess what? If the opposing pitcher on any other team vs. the Yanks has a good day, there’s an excellent chance we lose.

    Such is baseball.

  115. GreenBeret7 June 5th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

When MLB.Tv had “Cathedrals Of The Game” on the Rogers Center, they said the cost to open and close the dome was $25,000 a pop. I assume that’s the amount of electicity and the cost of restarting the air conditioning.

  116. yc June 5th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

  119. Stuckey June 5th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Beckett has been on a roll lately, we may not score many off him.

Perhaps then instead of trying outduel him at him, you focus on more favorable match-ups in the other games .. focus on getting 2 of 3, with the Beckett game being gravy.

  120. R-Tek June 5th, 2009 at 4:48 pm

It will be Pettitte vs. Beckett and then Pettitte vs. Santana

  121. N June 5th, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Pete, thank you for saving me a trip uptown. I was just about to leave. I think it’s a disgrace that right now at 4:50, 30 minutes after your alert, the Yankees still have not posted this news to their site or changed their “all clear” advisory on their phone system. Why is it that a blogger beats the Yankees to break this news? I bet some fans who don’t know about this blog will head up to the stadium. Can’t they find someone in the organization to get the news out as fast as Pete?
    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....update.jsp

  122. Trevor June 5th, 2009 at 4:48 pm

If Boston gets rained out too. I believe we’re looking at Lester in the first game. It pushes Penny out of the series.

    Lester vs Pettitte
    Beckett vs Wang
    Wakefield vs Sabathia

  123. m June 5th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

I think we’ve faired rather well vs. Beckett, even when he’s on. Yankee hitters can usually get to aces, except Doc.

    Betsy,

You need to forget about Padilla. MLB is going to reduce, not increase the punishment, if anything.

  124. saucy June 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

“And Padilla doesn’t get suspended……..there are no words strong enough to describe how I feel about Butthead Watson”

i’ve always thought his biggest issue with the punishments he hands out, is that he never looks at the situation. only individual events that make it up…

if Mr. Potato head were batting, anyone who throws the slightest bit inside would get 6 games…

Exactly, what’s the point of worrying about match-ups? THIS IS OUR ROTATION. How many games have we supposedly matched up well against a pitcher and ended up losing? I can’t even count the number of times our offense have made rookies look like CY Young contenders.

It’s anyone’s game, any given day.

  127. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Lester and Pettite is the crapshoot. We’ll se about that game.

Game 3 is gravy for CC.

  133. SJ44 June 5th, 2009 at 4:53 pm

    Stuckey,

That’s the thing too many fans on here don’t realize. Players don’t approach games the same way fans do.

They don’t look at a June series with the Red Sox, or Rays for that matter, as “big” or, “they have to prove they can win against good teams”, and all the other stuff we read on here.

They also don’t look at lineups or pitching matchups and say, “There is no way we can win today”.

Its not how ballplayers think. They don’t think like fans.

They will take the games as they come and look to keep things on an even keel.

Its the only way you can handle the length of a baseball season.

  134. Stultus Magnus June 5th, 2009 at 4:54 pm

“You can take numbers and situations and do anything you want with them.”

Come on, SJ. Geez, then stop quoting stats when you are making a point. I thought that was an unnecessary poke at Laura seeing as you rail on the “crybabies” for not being informed.

  135. Frank June 5th, 2009 at 4:54 pm

Kinda relieved to not have to wait out the rain–I waited the 2 hours for that dreadful Red Sox game & then sat through every minute two seats over from the most obnoxious Red Sox fan I’ve ever encountered, but disappointed to miss out on the pitching match-up & don’t like the idea of no days of in September.
On a less important note, does anyone know what happens regarding the promotions when a game gets postponed? Do they get handed out at the next game or whenever the game is rescheduled? Thought the figurine stadium would’ve been a nice bonus to the game.

  148. Dave D. June 5th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

    We didn’t “hit him around”.

  149. SJ44 June 5th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

    Laura,

What’s Girardi supposed to say to the media? “These are just regular season games”? He would get killed in the media if he says that.

Players like to keep things stable. You would be hard pressed, aside from the PC nature of comments to have players cop to June series being “big” or “very important”.

Players believe when you do that, you get tight.

You just play the games on the schedule and try to keep it as even keel as possible.

  154. bru June 5th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

it doesn’t matter who pitches right now.

the object is for the yankees to win one more game than the red sox to win the division or one more game in the wild card chase.

if there were 7 games left in the season we could get swept by boston in the first three but boston loses the last four games & we win our last four & we win the division by one game if we were tied.

anything can happen that is why you have to play the games.

Yeah, there isn’t anyone in the Yankees organization is is going to say anything to suggest the Red Sox series isn’t important. But my point was I really doubt Wang is going to feel any additional pressure because it’s the Red Sox.

And for those who believe in “motivation” chestnuts like being on deck when an intentional walk is issued, or throwing at the player on a slumping team and waking them up, do you think the Yanks should rearrange their rotation thereby sending the message to the Rays that they are looking past them?

You can see a 7 walk performance coming from a mile away

  179. vtred June 5th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

The only way Lester goes in the Yankees series is if tonight’s Sox game gets rained out. Then it would be Lester-Beckett-Wakefield.

  182. Wang vs. Sox? We'll see. June 5th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Laura, of course we do. Don’t jump down my throat.

I mean that if you were a stathead simulating this series, conceivably we could win all three.

We all know baseball doesn’t work on a simulated level. No need to tell me.

  183. Andrew June 5th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

People that are complaining about Burnett pithcing on too much rest = idiots. People ALREADY complaining about the Boston series and its pitching “line-up” without playing a single inning against Tampe = similarly idiotic.

As of now, AJ, Wang and CC in Boston. Boston will throw Beckett, Wakefield and either Penny or Lester(if they skip Penny on Thursday) If there’s a rainout tonight in Boston, it all depends on who pitches tomorrow. So, stay tuned. Sorry, that’s the best I can come up with now by looking at the matchups for this weekend.

  187. Andrew June 5th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Writing Tampe instead of Tampa is pretty idiotic, as well.

    Barring a Met rain out:

    Maine vs Chamberlain
    Hernandez vs Pettitte
    Santana vs Burnett

    :P

  191. m June 5th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

    Laura,

    That’s manager speak.

Players (Jeter) who speak to the media about a series will adjust what they say. If they’re playing the scrubs of the schedule, they’ll say stuff like, “We take every game seriously. That’s why you play the games. Blah, blah, blah.”

Then for the Boston series, they’ll publicly downplay it saying something like, “It’s just another series. One of 162. Blah, blah, blah.”

They may get more excited about playing Boston, but they’ll won’t admit that it has any more importance than playing someone like the Orioles.

  198. Joe June 5th, 2009 at 5:21 pm

    I’m confused

Penny goes tonight, Lester goes Sat, Dice-K goes Sunday

So if tonight’s game gets rained out, that means Penny would go Saturday and Lester goes Sunday… which would push Dice-K to Tuesday’s game against us.

Lester would be on normal rest on Thursday, but that would be Penny’s turn anyway.

How would Lester be slotted into the Yankees series?

If the Sox and Texas play a DH tomorrow, it doesn’t alter the rotation.

Beckett would still be scheduled on Tuesday. Wakefield scheduled on Wednesday.

All it does is put Penny on normal rest on Thursday instead of 5 days rest like he was originally scheduled to go on. They could opt to go Lester too, but they could have done that anyway.

I thought Peter Abraham would have smart people here on his blog. Why on earth would someone want a game canceled because of tired players or pitching matchups.

I think some people here are in the 8th grade.

  210. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 5th, 2009 at 5:29 pm

They may try to get the BOS game in. Weather.com says “Light Rain”. I think the rain that was headed for NY was going to be heavier.

  211. Tank June 5th, 2009 at 5:29 pm

Hope Burnett throws an extra pen session or something… don’t want him to be rusty with 2 extra days rest.

  212. Mike June 5th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

We still have 3 more games before the Boston series, against another division rival.

  213. RC 16 June 5th, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Andrew, why so upset? So what that people are concerned about AJ pitching on 7 days rest – that’s a LOT. I’m not sure I agree with the move – and not just because it’s AJ. I just dont see the reason for adjusting the schedule so that AJ gets an extra 3 days rest – which isn’t exactly ideal for any pitcher

  216. Tom in N.J. June 5th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

  221. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 5:39 pm

  222. Ball 4 June 5th, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Price and CC will both be on 1 week rest tomorrow. CC will be fine, even if he is rusty he has enough pitches where he can work his way through.

Hate the idea of a guy like Burnett on 1 week rest though. He only has 2 pitches as it is. If he can’t locate that curve early because he is rusty (and the curve is a feel pitch), they are going to kill him.

    Hope it works out.

  223. Betsy June 5th, 2009 at 5:42 pm

If the Braves and Marlins were contracted and made into one team, they’d be dangerous. The Braves can’t keep their hitters healthy and the Marlins and keep their pitchers healthy. Hard to believe after winning 15 games last year, Ricky Nolasco ended up in the minors this year. He was just recalled. From 15-8, 187 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.50 to 2-5 and a 9.00 ERA.

Baseball should never be played under a low of sixty five. I would wager Posada and Molina injuries are cold weather induced. jmo.
