Only in baseball

The three errors by Tampa Bay’s Dioner Navarro were the most for a catcher since Cleveland’s Einar Diaz had three on June 1, 2001.

The opponent that day: The Yankees.

Pitching for Cleveland: CC Sabathia.

Meanwhile, Randy Choate has three saves in four games for the Rays. He had made 196 relief appearance in his career before that without picking up any saves.

We need to get Heath Bell, now. Street is the 2nd option.

  2. m June 6th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

Still don’t know how we lost a game when the other team committed 4 errors.

  3. Jerkface June 6th, 2009 at 7:30 pm

We should trade for Randy Choate, he is a yankee guy. He fits in. He plays the game the right way.

  4. Rebecca-Optimist Prime June 6th, 2009 at 7:32 pm

m: Because only one of the errors came with RISP.

  5. m June 6th, 2009 at 7:32 pm

    Trevor,

No, this is an old quote. When asked about NYS, CC said something like it wouldn’t be a problem with his stuff. I thought it was kind of a cavalier attitude at the time.

So, even if the HRs were no-doubters, it’s kind of karmic that he got hit in the very next game he pitched after saying it wouldn’t be a problem.

  6. Trevor June 6th, 2009 at 7:34 pm

“Still don’t know how we lost a game when the other team committed 4 errors”

They didn’t turn them into big innings. They scored only 2 runs on those errors.

  7. m June 6th, 2009 at 7:34 pm

Thanks, Rebecca. I was tuning in and out of the game. CC had a 2-0 lead and when I came back it was 5-2. Next time I’ll stay glued and maybe our luck will be better. :)

Ah, the great karma konversation kontinues.

Karma? I’ll buy irony and/or coincidence.

  9. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC June 6th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

The New York Yankees will become the first MLB team to have its games streamed live online within its home market, thanks to a landmark carriage deal YES Network signed with Cablevision earlier this spring.

The streamed games will begin later this season and will be available via subscription to Cablevision’s TV and broadband customers who subscribe to a tier that carries the YES Network, according to several baseball and cable industry sources.

The move is part of an overall renewal of Cablevision’s YES Network affiliation deal that was signed earlier this spring but never officially announced.

The pact also marks the first major effort within baseball for in-market streaming — an issue that has troubled the industry for years. Several clubs that hold equity interest in regional sports networks, such as the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, have pressed for in-market streaming to complement MLB.TV’s out-of-market online video package.

Oh, God. The end times are here. The world as we know it is crumbling…Not only are the Red Sox winning 1-0 after 2 innings, but the Ortiz slump is over. He has 4 hits in June.

  18. rconn23 June 6th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

McAllister is a 21 year old prospect on the rise who is dominating in his first year at AA.

And yet, people are ready to give him up for Huston Street, who couldn’t beat out Manny Corpas for the closer’s job last year, and only got it back this year because Corpas is so terrible.

Then, people want to give up McCallister for Heath Bell, who pitches in the most pitcher friendly park in the majors.

    Absurd.

  19. Rachel June 6th, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Cash has to trade for someone who could pitch the 8th inning, or close if Mo is not available on a certain day. Who knows how Mo is going to be later on in the season once he has 50 innings in his arm or next season. Street could be the guy it is just what they want for him and what Cash thinks is too much. He is only 26 years old and it might make sense to give up what you have to, considering he could help Mo until he retires. The last thing they would want is Mo really getting hit around and they have no one in the wings to help take over.

  20. trisha June 6th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

This is the time that is always worst for me. I get so ensconced in the game of baseball that when it is over for the season I feel really empty. I guess I’ll just have to wait until hot stove begins.

    :(

What? Yankees are where? What place????? Yankees are in first place?

    OHHHHH. Never mind.

  21. trisha June 6th, 2009 at 7:55 pm

    GO RAAAAAANGERS!!!

  22. trisha June 6th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

HEY! I HEARD THAT JON LESTER IS PITCHING A NO HITTER!!! ACTUALLY A NO NO!!!!

    Here’s hopin’!

  23. rconn23 June 6th, 2009 at 7:57 pm

From the “it was only a matter of time” category, Jon Lester is back to being dominant.

Just another roadmine. Luckily, he won’t face the Yankees next series.

  24. Al from BK June 6th, 2009 at 7:59 pm

Why does everyone insist we keep any Yankee prospect who looks decent when we have a very clear area of need on the big club. McAllister is dominating AA but scouts say at best he is a number 3-4 starter at his ceiling. We need bullpen, if we keep Joba as a starter then this is what must be done to keep us in it.

  25. RalphieD (OPPC all day) June 6th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

doesnt street have diminished stuff due to some injury he suffered..or am i wrong

  26. Baseball Fab June 6th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Lester is PERFECT tonight, 7 Ks after 4, touching 98MPH he looks disgusting

  27. rconn23 June 6th, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Because you don’t give up a blue-chip prospect for questionable bullpen arms.

Want to give up a horse like McAllister? It’s not for Street or Bell, who, by the way, pitch in the worst division in baseball.

How do you think they would fare in the toughest division?

McAllister may not be a No.1, but he is a middle of the rotation horse in the making, like Derek Lowe, and you don’t give those up for Street or Bell.

  28. Jerkface June 6th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Heath Bell is actually as good or better on the road than at home, and has an 11 k/9. I would take Heath Bell on this team but I don’t know who I’d trade for him.

  29. Mike June 6th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

Wish we had a pitcher who could dominate every time out like Lester

    Filthy throwing 98, strikeouts, dominant

  30. Carl June 6th, 2009 at 8:12 pm

considering hes 4-5 with a 5.27 era, you would hate him if we had him.

  31. Redding June 6th, 2009 at 8:12 pm

We better get Street, or we’re going to fall into 3rd place soon

This bullpen is ATROCIOUS. Not a single person you can trust, even the closer is no longer lights out. Big problem. Especially since Boston’s pen is the best in baseball

  32. Rebecca-Optimist Prime June 6th, 2009 at 8:12 pm

Maine knocked out in the fifth, 7-0 Nats.

    The universe is disordered tonight.

  33. rconn23 June 6th, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Wow. Lester is better than I’ve ever seen him. The Rangers have no chance against him tonight.

    This is not good.

  34. Tom in N.J. June 6th, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Wish we had a pitcher who has a losing record and a 5.32 era.

  37. Baseball Fab June 6th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

51 pitches in 5 innings. 9 Ks. Not bad. ZERO HITS

  38. SJ44 June 6th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

You don’t have to give up Zach McAllister for Huston Street.

As the deadline nears, prices will fall into line for players.

Nobody in baseball is giving up their best minor league pitching prospect for a bullpen arm.

They have the parts to get bullpen help and they will add an arm, maybe two, during the season.

They just aren’t going to go in panic mode and do it in June 6.

  39. Maria June 6th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Lester has not been dominate everytime out at all this year. He is a very very good pitcher. I am absolutely not denying that, but he has had his fair share of struggles this year.

  40. Baseball Fab June 6th, 2009 at 8:17 pm

    2-0 Sox, the Elf
    :(

  41. rconn23 June 6th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Yeah, Jon Lester sucks. Perfect logic.

I’m sure you actually believe what you are typing too.

It’s one thing to be a homer, it’s another to deny logic completely.

  42. Nick in SF in Petaluma June 6th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

    Who dominates every time out??

A pitcher like that could go far!

  43. Bret the Hitman June 6th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Heath Bell is the best closer in baseball right now. Cherry pick all you want. In the end, Heath Bell is numero uno right now and we need an 8th inning guy who can also close on occasion. .94 WHIP and 11 k’s per 9 innings and 0 HR’s surrendered.

I sense that the love you have for Heath Bell is very strong

  48. Jack June 6th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

I agree with the comment in another thread about the Yanks starters being very overrated. Lester has been up and down this season but even he is capable of taking over a game and dominating the opposition. No Yankee starter can do that. Our number one guy can’t hold a lead unless it’s 10-0 or close to it.

There is going to be all sorts of panic when the third game at Fenway is over on Thursday. It looks to be a disastrous week ahead.

  49. rconn23 June 6th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Cherry picking stats would be calling Heath Bell the best closer in baseball.

  54. East River June 6th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Great. Lester is going to throw his 2nd no hitter tonight. Day just keeps getting worse and worse

Our ace gives up 5 runs to John Dillion, Erick Aybar etc.

  55. Bret the Hitman June 6th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

My love for Heath Bell will go stronger if Cashman puts him in pinstripes and he becomes the bridge to Mo even if for only 2009. The Sox traded Hanley Ramirez for a missing piece and they got 2 rings out of it but these chicken littles are afraid AFRAID to trade Zachary McAllister in order to fix our biggest weakness. Oh, how in the world will we ever win without McAllister in our rotation?

Oh yeah…CC, Wang, Burnett, Joba, Hughes and down the line Brackman, Betances, C. Garcia, De La Rosa etc. etc. and on and on.

    OH NOZZZZ

  56. Jerkface June 6th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Phil hughes dominated this same ranger team over 8 innings.

    Joba Chamberlain dominated the indians.

The middle relief is not why we lost today

Rivera continuing his decline is the reason why. Bell, Street etc. would not have pitched the 9th today, considering they had yesterday off and MO was fresh.

The bigger problem is Rivera and his dominance coming to an end. That was the one constant we have always had. If that is gone too… then what? We’ve lost out biggest advantage.

  59. Bret the Hitman June 6th, 2009 at 8:37 pm

I really have no patience today for people who say they’ve had a bad day because the Yankees lost and Lester might throw another no-no.

    You want a bad day?

How about being the father of the girl hit in the face with a line drive foul ball. As far as I could see, she was knocked out by the pitch-not moving at all in her father’s arms..

Yeah, it really sucks that the Yankees might end the day a half game out of first with two thirds of a season still to play…

Lester is a very good pitcher. I never said he sucked. I just posted his season stats in responce to the poster who claimed that he dominates every night. Doesn’t make me some blind homer.

From the – It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt file.

“Alex Rodriguez narrowly escaped harm Saturday when a foul ball hit by a Little Leaguer whizzed by him and struck another man during an appearance in the Bronx.

A-Rod, a little more than an hour after the Yankees’ 9-7 loss to the Rays at Yankee Stadium, was coaching third base for the Alex Rodriguez All-Stars in an exhibition game against a Manhattan team coached by actor Richard Gere.

Wearing a pink polo shirt, gray V-neck sweater and jeans, A-Rod had to dodge a line drive from a youngster. A man standing behind him was struck in the face but required no medical attention.

A-Rod watched the rest of the inning from behind the fenced-in first-base dugout. He later returned to the baselines.”
