    I’m not a Twitter guy.

What I don’t get about Twitter is, how do you know the folks on it are real? Tony LaRussa just settled a lawsuit with Twitter over someone faking his ID and writing stuff.

How do we know Pete is Twittering? Suppose George King cops his ID? lol

Seriously though, for the more internet savvy, what’s the lure of Twitter when you have no guarantee its the real person posting.

  2. vb03 - Free Wang!!!

    “I’m not a Twitter guy.”

Same. Never really got into it. I see the point of Facebook, but not Twitter.

  3. Guy Incognito

SJ44, just don’t follow celebrities, follow actual people. I follow a couple of people who are frequent posters here as well as a couple of other Yankee bloggers. It’s a lot of fun, Twitter…my wife thinks I’m insane but it’s really growing on me.

  4. jennifer

    http://kimberlyjones.mlblogs.c.....rview.html

Nick swisher video is up. :-) Now if I could only watch it at work. ;-)

  5. vin

Most celebrities will plug their twitter account name. Also, some of them will post behind-the-scenes photos that most imposters wouldn’t be able to provide.

Twitter is an odd phenomenon. Not as robust as Facebook, but great tool for connecting with people you ordinarily wouldn’t have access to, and for getting instant information.

  6. Oh please.

I have mixed feelings about Twitter. For the average Joe who tweets, it seems so narcissistic. “I’m going out for coffee.” “It’s raining in Pittsburgh.” “Saw Hangover last night. Great movie.” Thanks for sharing!

For the athlete and celeb, it’s an easy way to communicate with fans – no harm there. For journalists – it’s great in terms of drawing traffic, gaining a following and I would imagine that journalists are also pitched by PR folks via Twitter as well.

But if Tony L can sue, why can’t someone else? Famous or otherwise? I’m sure there are celebs and people of note who have been satirized or maligned in far harsher terms.

  7. Me

Twitter didn’t settle with LaRussa. That lawsuit is still pending because they refuse to settle. And anyone who visited that Twitter page read right on it that it was a parody. It isn’t Twitter’s fault that LaRussa is dense.

Most often, figuring out who is real and who isn’t is as easy as Googling that person’s name with the word “Twitter”.

Twitter is better than Facebook for those who like interacting with people briefly (a Twitter update is equal to a status update, for the most part, on Facebook) but don’t want to deal with all the garbage that goes along with FB. It’s also a way to get info quickly without having to learn all the private details of the lives of the people you decide to follow.

  8. jennifer

guy- what is your twitter id? shamefully I am on there too.

  9. AROD fan

just assume someone isn’t real until you find out from a reliable news source that it is. pete has told us that swisher’s is real and implied that sabathia’s isn’t (is this true btw?) girardi says he’s not on it. i think twitter is for fun anyways, it’s not really that upsetting to learn that it isn’t really cc saying “i pitched today. no decision.”

  10. Doreen

    Same here.

I’m not interesting enough to enough people, nor self-important enough to think that someone needs to know what I’m doing/thinking constantly.

Aside from keeping tabs on – um, keeping connected to – my daughter, I don’t see the point. And text messages work just fine without Twitter.

  11. Doreen

    I do like Facebook, though.

  12. jennifer

arod- I would venture to say that CC’s is real. We know Swishers is, and Swish has CC on his ‘friends’ so I think he would know if CC’s is real or not.

  13. Dallas

Its still a work in progress(will be filtering some of cruft out) but I built a custom twitter feed that aggregates the top twitter personalities(media, players, bloggers) for the Yankees so you can try it instead of setting up your own account. Feedback welcome.

    http://sportspyder.com/teams/n.....ees/tweets

  14. Howard

Just started to use twitter last week and I love it- If you follow the Giants and Yanks all the beat writers are using it and you get a lot of information real quick. Last night Chris Mortenson and Peter king kept tweeting back and forth over Brett Favre and and it was great! That exchange alone sold me on twitter. Plus its fun to seewho posts things first. Sweeny is a twittering machine.

  15. Oh please.

    Well done, Dallas.

  16. Doreen

Maybe if I got out more….

  17. Andrew

I find it hard to take Twitter seriously because IMO the most entertaining Twitters to follow are the fake ones that people create to mock celebrities/anyone in the public eye. For me the cream of the crop (as a sports fan at least) was the Deadspin-created fake Rick Reilly Twitter that got shut down in the last couple of months.

So I guess it’s kind of a sign of my feelings towards Twitter that I love the fake, mock Tweets more than regular “I just went to the bathroom after drinking a HUGE cup of coffee”-type minutiae that litters the Twitter universe.

  18. jennifer

Has anyone heard anything on Montero? Is he okay? There wasn’t an update on Mike’s blog. Kinda worried not hearing anything.

  19. Trevor

Montero looks to be okay. Even though there’s no exact mention of any kind of injury. Probably a mild concussion.
He hasn’t been DL’d which is a good sign. They just probably want to give him so more time before going back to catching.
    He’ll probably DH some though.

  20. jennifer

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html

This is crazy. 50 million for someone who hasn’t pitched a game in the majors.

  21. jennifer

Mike trying to start something between Mo and Joe too. Talking about talking Mo out in the middle of an inning. As if that never happened before. It has, not often but it has.

  22. Guy Incognito

Jennifer, I follow you on Twitter already (and vice versa). Small world!

  23. jennifer

    • My goal of catching Nick Swisher on Twitter wasn’t helped when he homered on Sunday and I just sat in the press box. He gained 4,000-plus additional followers while I gained a measly 42. Still, I am not giving up. To follow me, go here.

  24. jennifer

guy- You do? Tweet me. I didn’t realize.

  25. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

Hey did you guys see this/

    http://riveraveblues.com/2009/.....ent-419844

Mo’s struggles Saturday due to stomach bug.

  26. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

    Y’all could follow me on
    twitter :-P @firersoearien.

  27. Guy Incognito

Shelley Duncan is also on Twitter @shelldunc and often has very interesting insight into life on the road in the minor leagues.

  28. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

Guy: Shelly responds to fans, too. It’s awesome. He made fun of me last night b/c I like sushi

  29. jennifer

Yeah. Shelley is a good guy. He thanked me for voting for him in the ASG.

  30. In my humble opinion

I hope Shelley makes it back as a pinch hitter.

  31. Betsy

The controversy du jour today was about how Mo has declined to the point where he’s not as good as K-Rod (from Evan), lol. Francesca just denigrated Mo’s outing yesterday as being against the bottom half of the lineup, but I don’t suppose he realizes that Mo was sick yesterday (and shouldn’t have pitched)?

I agree with all the comments in the previous thread crediting Girardi with the more relaxed atmosphere. Allowing families back in the clubhouse was a huge deal, I think, for the players. The pool outing in ST, golf “tournament” – that’s fun for the guys. How often do they get a chance to act like kids? Also, they know Joe has their backs. Remember that time he got ejected? He went out there and let the ump have it. He defended Alex in the press – basically, Joe has gone out of his way to show that he cares about his players. This team likes their manager, they like each other (the Yankees did a good job in making sure their new acquisitions/signings had the right personality) and the like playing in NY (they don’t have the scaredy cat look). They are ultra-competitive despite their sort of happy-go lucky out look….I love this team (now, don’t lose tonight!!!……..)

  32. gayle

Anyone think that maybe part of the reason that Girardi took Mo out of the game on Saturday was so that he would be available to pitch on Sunday and not run up the pitch count based on how he was piptching.

Rather than start controversy where it may or may not exist maybe some of the radio folks should think a bit.

Re Twitter love it during the games and chatting it up quickly with people also interesting interaction with people with common interests be it politics, sports music etc. I also use it to follow what people are saying about my artists which is nice to do.

Twitter is launching finally a verifies accounts system so you can see the fake celebs from the real ones. Part of the problem with twitter right now as it is with most starts ups that come quickly they dont have enough staff to handle some of the verification issues that exist.

I have an artist who is trying to get their name back and we have been dealing with it for over a month they just don’t have the staff to deal with how quickly they have risen in popularity.

  33. 86w183

I’m too old for all of this. I’m happy I can surf the net and take part in blogs that interest me. I intend to live the rest of my life in reality, not cyber space but to each his/her own.

Still wish Shelley was with the Yankees instead of Angel (hitless for seven weeks and counting) Berroa.

  34. In my humble opinion

    Mo is amazing.

I’m sorry I ever doubted him. Ever. Ever. Ever.

My sympathies. But he shouldn’t have gone out there anyway. I would’ve used Robertson.

  35. In my humble opinion

    Or CC.

  36. jennifer

Boy people find everything to complain about. Now someone is complaining about how Jorge batted. That he should have batted lefty not righty. Why didn’t Joe tell Jorge which way to bat. WOW

  37. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

Betsey and Gayle: Did you see my link above?

Reason mo faltered on Saturday was because he had a stomach bug and was kinda sorta puking his guts out.

  38. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

Fatcessa can’t answer a simple good question, it’s true

JP Howell struggles vs LHBs and Posada nearly bounced into a DP when he swung from the RH side. It sounds like a good question.

  39. Patrick

If anyone doesn’t like Twitter, just start following Shaquille O’neal. His username is THE_REAL_SHAQ and yes it really is him. He’s a hilarious dude and got me hooked on Twitter :)

  40. In my humble opinion

Halladay is the only pitcher in the league better than Santana.
But this caller has a point because CC pitches in the AL. In the NL he dominated, so who knows how he would do?

  41. In my humble opinion

In other words, if Santana were in the AL who would be better? Because CC in the NL was totally dominant.

  42. Betsy

Thinking ahead, I hope AJ has a short memory and can put his last start in Boston behind him…..actually, I hope he has a long memory and remembers that he’s dominated Boston in his career, even at Fenway

  43. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

The Tank is going off, and the caller has a point for the last 2 yrs. CC has been better than Johan. Johan is in the NL, CC dominated the NL, but to say CC isn’t in his league ?

  44. Carl

    CC destroyed the NL. DESTROYED.

  45. In my humble opinion

That A.J. start in Boston was an even worse loss than the Mo blown save.

Once again,I offer my sincerest apologies to Mo. I shall never doubt him again.

  46. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

Brandon Only issue is that CC has massively faltered in the playoffs. Possibly from overuse, but we don’t know.

  47. JCPD

    In my humble opinion

Halladay is the only pitcher in the league better than Santana.
But this caller has a point because CC pitches in the AL. In the NL he dominated, so who knows how he would do?

Can you imagine the numbers if Halladay was in the NL???

  48. Carl

    Is Mike really this stupid?

  49. In my humble opinion

Brandon.. “Jus get ‘em out”, the caller has a point but in fairness he WAS an idiot; it was a point he never brought up.

  50. Pat M

CC won the Cy Young 2 years ago in the AL….

  51. Tom in N.J.

Fake michael bay’s twitter is funny:

    http://twitter.com/michael_bay

  52. SJ44

    Gayle,

That’s precisely why Girardi took him out on Saturday. He said it on Sterling’s pre-game show yesterday.

Mike ought to do a little research for his show and that question would have been answered easily.

What difference does it make what part of the batting order Mo, or any other closer, faces in a save situation? Did you get the save or not? That’s all that matters.

Its not college football. Style points don’t count.

Last I checked, the Yankees won yesterday, are in first place, and have the best record in the AL. Not a lot to whine about if you ask me.

  53. In my humble opinion

    JCPD, an ERA of -1.00?

Halladay hits a HR a game and shuts the other team out!

  54. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

“Brandon.. “Jus get ‘em out”, the caller has a point but in fairness he WAS an idiot; it was a point he never brought up.”

I know, I wish 1 smart fan would call that show, but they get waved off before any of thier points get through. Sad what talk radio has become. :(

  55. In my humble opinion

Pat M, he did but Carmona deserved it. They had nearly the same record, 19 wins but Carmona had less losses and a lower ERA.

  56. In my humble opinion

Rebecca-Optimist Prime, cream rises to the top. CC is too good, give him enough chances and he’ll perform in the playoffs.

  57. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

    What is he saying ?

  58. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

LOL Howell can’t pitch to LHBs, he walked Cano !

If Georgy would have swung LH vs him he prbly doesn’t almost GIDP like yesterday, maybe he walks.

  59. Betsy

Rebecca, Mo should never have pitched – I read the story last night. I can not understand why Joe used him – I don’t care if Mo wanted to, you sit the guy and let him get better.

  60. 86w183

Both are great and I’d love to have ‘em on the Yankees. Glad to have the one we got.

At some point Toronto has to auction off Roy Halliday because they aren’t going to be able to keep him after 2010 since he’s gonna want to win someday.

Can you imagine the trade biddings wars if they put that horse on the market?

  61. In my humble opinion

One guy just said Swisher was an awful hitter and fielder; Mike agreed.

Idiot. Since when was a 250 hitter with power “awful”?

As for awful fielding, all I’ve noticed is a bad arm; I think everything else is a media creation.

  62. Carl

Swish is an awful right fielder? Michael Kay comes on in 8 mins.

  63. Scott

That Burnett game in Fenway was the worst

Not only did he blow a 6-0 lead and give up a grand slam to Varitek…. but even after that disaster, we got the lead back twice against their pen and failed to hold it.

Bullpens always play a big role in Yankees/Sox games. Very rarely are you going to play a 13-3 game against them. Even games that are not that close (4-6 runs lead) are managed like they are close.

  64. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

“Can you imagine the trade biddings wars if they put that horse on the market?”

And soon will be past his prime..

  65. In my humble opinion

Betsy, I agree, expecially w/CC’s pitch count.

We might be in line for the sweep if Joe had handled it correctly. It’s a badly managed series for Joe.

But we can still win the series so I really can’t complain.

  66. Edwards

Swisher is a pretty bad fielder. Awful may be too strong, but he certainly isin’t good.

  67. S.A.--Let's get ready to rumble!

Francesa: “Let’s get rid of him so that I can concentrate for a second”

  68. jennifer

Nick has his lapses. Sometimes he seems to eager to pick up the ball and keeps missing it.

  69. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

    Expecially is especially.

  70. SJ44

    Betsy,

Having nausea is not necessarily a reasson not to pitch. Unless you are in the playoffs and your name is Tom Gordon.

Mo didn’t suddenly “get better” yesterday. He PITCHED better. Big difference.

Mo has pitched sick before and retired the side in order. Its not something out of the ordinary.

He’s 39, coming off shoulder surgery, and he’s going to mix in a few clunkers than folks are used to seeing. At some point, that’s going to happen given his age.

Things don’t have to be overanalyized. He pitched much better yesterday and was more effective. Its really as simple as that.

  71. hank hal

Does Howell even have a fastball?

He looks like a better version of Dan Giese

  72. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Someone should call Mike and tell him about the stomach bug.

    Has Mike HEARD of Aceves!?!

  73. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

For the third and final time, then I’m done: From the bottom of my heart, I apologize. If Mo was sick, Girardi should’ve stuck with CC.

  74. Dr. Cox

“Francesa: “Let’s get rid of him so that I can concentrate for a second””

Who is this in reference to??

    I do like Facebook, though.

    —-

Doreen, care to share your facebook name? Mine is Ray Carballo. Add me if you like or any other yankee fans.

  76. Eric

And if CC had given up the lead, people would be killing Girardi for not bringing in MO and how he’s burning our his starters.

    He can’t win.

Instead of complaining, why not highlight the fact that despite all of our injuries and having one of the worst bullpens in baseball, Girardi has us tied for the best record in the AL?

  77. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Dr. Cox, somebody asked him a trivia question: What player has played 500 games at third and catcher?

  78. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

Damn he was pitching the 9th after throwing up and needing to rolled on the trainer’s table, Mo ILY but damn, tell someone please :?

  79. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

    Eric, Mo was SICK.

I didn’t criticize him at all before I learned that.

  80. Trevor

    “Has Mike HEARD of Aceves”

Yes he has but he said that he’s “waiting for the bloom to come off”. He’s waiting for him to fail. Same for Joba as a starter.
What kind of fan roots for the players on his team to fail? He’s so caught up in ‘I told you so’. I’m telling you he’s closet Sox fan.

  81. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Brandon, I hate to ask but what does ILY stand for?

But looking at the gist of your post, I agree.

  82. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“As for awful fielding, all I’ve noticed is a bad arm; I think everything else is a media creation.”

He hasn’t been very good. Throws are all over the place and a lot drops in front of him.

  83. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

You don’t let Halladay go. He’s a franchise player, the same vein as Jeter/Pujols/Wright/Utley type.

  84. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Right now Aceves is pitching better than Hughes AND Joba. Expecially Hughes.

Aceves should be in line for the rotation and Hughes should be in the pen!

  85. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

“Brandon, I hate to ask but what does ILY stand for?”

    I love ya or “you”

  86. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Before people jump all over me, think about this: why not put Aeves in the rotation one day? The same arguement works for him and Joba; both have the potential to be great starters, and those who didn’t believe it of Aceves before probably believe it now!

  87. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

    Aeves is Aceves.

  88. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

    Thanks Brandon.

  89. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Yes he has but he said that he’s “waiting for the bloom to come off”. He’s waiting for him to fail. Same for Joba as a starter.”

I sort of agree with him on Aceves. Think the more teams see of him the less good it is for the Yankees. Mike doesn’t get it on Joba though. Barring injury, the “bloom” is just beginning.

  90. stuart

hey draft experts….how is the great Craig Hansen doing the next great closer…

I remember how pissed all the blogging experts were when the yanks did not take him!!!!

He cannot even make the pirates roster, so call me a skeptic but the HOF may be a reach…………….I thought theo and all the redsux geniuses are so much smarter then everyone else.
how is that daisuke signing look, complain about joba being a 6 inning pitcher, the sux would kill if daisuke went 6 on occassion..

also the sux with some great catching depth. caritek is on the decline big time the guy is hitting less the n250 and people are applauding him, then you have the great koteras at less then 200(they bragged when they stole him from the padres) and nothing else out there…

the yanks have romine, montero, and cervelli all 23 or younger.. nah cashman and the gang are clueless………

  91. S.o.S.

Good morning fellas. Just wondering if anyone has any info on the pitcher that we picked up in the first round. Caught a glimps on espn bottom notes but havnt heard anything about it since. Was it real or just a guess of who we would pick up?

  92. bizarrojamie

the official MLB twitter also has people verify with the players in the clubhouses if accounts are real and keeps a list. It can be found by team at http://www.mlb.com/connect
There is a list somewhere that’s just twitter accounts but I don’t have that link handy unfortunately.

Twitter like facebook, myspace, livejournal, etc are all a matter of personal preference. I tend to read a lot more than I write, just like here. I find it handy, and get many laughs a day from the people I follow.

  93. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

    LOL hey stuart

  94. Patrick

“You don’t let Halladay go. He’s a franchise player, the same vein as Jeter/Pujols/Wright/Utley type.”

True, the only difference is that Halladay has never been on a world series caliber team; unlike the rest of the guys you mention. With the way Toronto is managed I expect he never will be.

  95. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Cito Gaston is a good manager.

  96. stuart

fatcessa knows as much as the bloggers on this site you see when the yankees are losing or lose.. they have no clue…they think the baseball season is 16 games like football not 162 games.

according to fatcessa david price should be in the pen also. tampa’s pen sucks, price had previous success in the pen, hey make him the closer..

BTW the Nat’s pen is atrocous maybe they can make strasbourg there cloesr!!!That sounds like ta winning idea……….

  97. SJ44

Aceves is the closest thing the Yankees have had to Ramiro Mendoza since Mendoza was here. He’s incredibly versatile and fills a variety of roles.

Those guys have value, more value, in bullpens than the starting rotation.

Its not a video game. You don’t shuffle guys around everyday just for something to do. Guys like to have certainty in their roles and they perform better when they have such certainty.

Joba pitched very well yesterday. He stumbled in the fifth, when he lost his fastball command and shook off Jorge too much but, that happens with young pitchers.

They don’t need to play games with Aceves. He’s been great in the role he has and there is no reason to change it.

  98. Yank1

    Bastardo is 2-0

  99. Boogie Down Bob

Curious to see the response to A-Rod at Fenway tomorrow night. Sox fans are in denial, so I’m sure the A-Roid garbage will be in full force

  100. Carl

    lol HE’S IN THE ROTATION!

  101. SJ44

    SOS,

The draft isn’t until tomorrow. ESPN is just running a mock draft.

  102. S.o.S.

    stuart,
Its in the eye of the beholder. To Gammons, he is the best closer hes ever seen.

  103. Patrick

“Cito Gaston is a good manager.”

Unfortunately J.P. Ricciardi is a horrible GM, one of the worst in the league IMO.

  104. S.o.S.

    Thanks SJ,
And here i thought Pete was starting to lose a step. Any news where your nephew will go and who you think the Yanks might get in the first round?

  105. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

SJ44, you’re right (and you use this video game analogy all the time which makes me scratch my head) but it just occurs to me you could use those same arguements to keep Joba in the pen, and nobody wants that.

If Aceves could be a good starter, and he’s done nothing to prove otherwise, why wouldn’t, one day, (not this year, and maybe not even next year) you use him that way? I thought we all established good starters were more valuable than bullpen guys. So far he’s pitched BETTER than the great Phil Hughes, who may still have a good career but who so far is being outpitched by another minor league prospect; it seems obvious to me that if they could use him as a good starter one day they should!

  106. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

    Tony The Basterd FTW

OT: Fatcessa better not bump into David Wright in a open alley.

  107. stuart

Also on the aceves front his stuff works fir a few inning not as a starter… he has balls and a variety of pitches but dominating stuff is not his it is that prototypical 8th inning guy Joba.. the guy that fatcessa and his minions of astute baseball analysts think should become a releif pitcher..

after all great bullpens are a constant year in and year out.

you have the likes of cliff pollittefor the white sox a few years ago or grant balfour the rays version of pollitte a few years later…

krod a great pitcher got offers from 1 team for $12 mill per yr. because MLB execs know less then fatcessa and his buffon followers………

  108. SJ44

    SOS,

No news yet. May hear something late today or tonight. Right now, all quiet on the draft front.

  109. Carl Henry

“He cannot even make the pirates roster, so call me a skeptic but the HOF may be a reach…………….I thought theo and all the redsux geniuses are so much smarter then everyone else.”

Cashman screwed up the Red Sox draft plan when he selected me at #17.

  110. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Aceves started a couple games before and did well.

  111. SJ44

Like Stuart says, Aceves stuff translates better to the bullpen because he only faces hitters once in the order.

His stuff isn’t good enough to get hitters out consistently 2-3 times around in the order. That’s why he’s not a better option than Hughes or Joba in the rotation so, your argument doesn’t hold water.

He’s the perfect fit for what his role is right now. No need to change it.

  112. 86w183

    Draft is tomorrow… just predictions

Hanson should have been the Yankees pick. Red Sawx messed him up by rushing him and then Peter “Tony Conigliaro was better than Mantle” Gammons made it even worse.

He may need to start over, but I wouldn’t give up on that arm.

The Yankees instead drafted the spectacular Carl Henry.

  113. stuart

I think henry and hansen were drafted in different years, i think…

the yanks have more players on there 25 man roster homegrown then the draft guru red sux………..

look at the sux rotation; penny, lester, daisuke, wakefield, and beckett. 1 homegrown guy…uno….

yanks; joba, wang, pettitte, cc, and aj.. 3 homegrown guys…..

nespn and the other red sux flacks think all the yankee players are free agent signings……

  114. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

SJ44, all right. I’m not very good at looking at people’s stuff and saying, “he has it” or “he doesn’t have it” except in obvious cases like Joba…so you may be right.

  115. Carl Henry

“I think henry and hansen were drafted in different years, i think…”

Nope. We both went in 2005.

  116. sab

what are the odds (if it already hasn’t happened) that Francona switches Penny for Lester on Thursday because Penny will have some sort of “personal emergency” that requires him to switch starts with Lester…

100% if the yankees somehow manage to win the first 2 games – i’ll drop it to 75% if they win 1 of the 2 and 50% if the sox win the first 2…

what are the odds that Big Poopy somehow manages to turn back into Big Poopy just for the yankee series?

  117. stuart

if the yanks drafted cj henry the same year they screwed that pick up big time.. they have done it before and will do that again..

read gammons blog today there are about 6 guys playing today in the majors from the last 2 drafts.. these guys take time and only about 80% fail…..

  118. DGiant

There’s a great yankee community on twitter.

I believe Nick tweets himself, whereas CC’s publicist tweets for him.

Shelly Duncan is on there too.

  119. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

I did a whole write up on RAB about Aceves and Mendoza.

basically Aceves is doing everything Mendoza did, but he’s doing it better.

  120. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

“Cashman screwed up the Red Sox draft plan when he selected me at #17.”

You screwed up when you started playing like a wuss and quit.

*Some people have compared Henry to players such as Vernon Wells and Gary Sheffield, and he should only get better once he commits himself to baseball on a full-time basis.

Built similar to Alex Rodriguez. Similar kinds of ability. Puts some strength into a slightly uppercut swing. Home run power from alley to alley*

This is crazy. 50 million for someone who hasn’t pitched a game in the majors.

    &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Does the name Dice K (1-4) ring a bell?

  122. Patrick

Haha draft a reliever in the first round? Not a good idea…

Henry and Hansen were both MISSES

  123. Bryan

Just scored some tickets to Wednesday’s game before I realized Wang was pitching…

I am going to have to be heavily sedated now

  124. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

Patrick, Henry was a huge mistake, I swear karma better come his way. Freaking quitter. :x

  125. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

This next strecth vs. the Sox and Mets is gonna be a blast.

  126. stuart

the point on hansen is they were gushing about him. he will be ready for the majors quickly, his stuff domiantes to bea closer, yada yada yada.

the buzz on henry was he is so athletic yada yada yada, he was a tools guy but 18 and a long way to go.. both picks sucked that is the bottom line..

the sux SS are; lugo, nick green, and lowrie again not exactly stud central…btw mike lowell only has about 15 GIDP, he is looking OLD.. BTW the whole sux team is looking fairly old…………..why no talk of the young athletic nature people constantly blather about the yanks?????

  127. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

If Mike ever went to a game, he’d realize that the ballpark is actually packed…

  128. SJ44

No chance Francona changes his pitching rotation. He’s thinking long term and isn’t going to screw up his rotation for a June series.

As far as Hanson is concerned, two things hurt him. NY hype for one. People like Bill Madden were predicting he was going to decide the 2005 (his draft year) pennant race, which was an absurd thing to say.

The other thing that hurt him is, the difference between the college and MLB ball. The two baseballs are different. The college ball has the stitches set much higher on the ball. That gives breaking balls, particularly sliders, more bite.

A lot of times, guys with sliders like Hanson possesses don’t translate to the big leagues because the change in balls affects their stuff. He could never control his breaking pitches at the ML level.

Same thing is happening to him in the minors.

That’s why he hasn’t panned out.

  129. MaineYankee

    SJ44

I suspect that if Aceves was a starter he might get exposed going through the lineup more than once. He seeems to be perfect for the role he’s in.

Masterson has been good for the RS in the pen but when he had to start he didn’t do so well.

They seem to fill similar roles. Valuable where they are.

Francessa praises Hunter Jones for the RS. I looked him up and he is below league average in all areas.

He’s going on the fact that he had 1 outing against the Yankees without looking up his numbers. An 8.00 era isn’t to great.

  130. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“what are the odds (if it already hasn’t happened) that Francona switches Penny for Lester on Thursday because Penny will have some sort of “personal emergency” that requires him to switch starts with Lester”

Right around zero%. I hit on this in a prior post. They don’t manage their pitching staff that way, especially in June. Any opportunity they have to give a guy the extra days rest, they do it. Especially true with Lester who is young and a “Verducci” case from last year.

Someone else also pointed out how he’d be set up to face the heavily left handed Phillies the next day.

  131. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Actually, an 8.00 ERA is awful.

  132. S.o.S.

    SJ,
I was watching TCU vs. Texas in the super regionals and the commentator said after the TCU catcher threw out a Longhorn trying to steal, thats the reason hes the best in the country. Not sure if he was a homer or if its true. Do you know anything about the guy and if so, how does Sanchez compare to him?

  133. Boogie Down Bob

2/3 from the Sux. If you want a good laugh, go read some of the comments on any Red Sox article over at boston.com

One genius suggested they trade Ortiz and Lugo to San Diego for Adrien Gonzalez of the Padres.

  134. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Francessa praises Hunter Jones for the RS. I looked him up and he is below league average in all areas.”

Accordingly, he’s been pitching in the International League for a most of the past month. Mike’s guessing today.

  135. SJ44

    Maine,

That’s it. In Francesa’s mind, and in the minds of many of his flock, one good inning against the Yankees by a Red Sox pitcher puts him in the All Star Game or HOF ballot.

Its why talk radio only appeals to idiots in the fan base these days.

Its a shame because the show can and should be better.

But, he’s an egotistical, lazy guy who does little or no homework and has to fill a 5+ hour show with something.

Making absurd arguments and predictions seems to be the way he chooses to go about it.

All he has to do is complain about the Yankee lineup daily and he would quality as a posting bridgejumper on here.

  136. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Boogie Down Bob, they can’t be serious. Who’d take Big Papi?

  137. Andrew

While CJ Henry was a giant bust, the Yankees that year also took another toolsy two-sport star athlete, a full 242 picks later that turned out pretty well…Mr. Austin Jackson. So, you take the hit for picking a bust in Round 1 but they got some other players that have turned out to be useful in that draft (Gritty Gutty Brett Gardner being another with a TBD still lingering for JB Cox and Alan Horne).

  138. stuart

hunter jones is so valauble for the sux he is pitching in AAA.

SJ thanks for the insight on the ball.. I know jack, I also know the draft is a gamble beyond belief. I live in so cal. I saw robert stock play in high school, jason stoeffel, dykstra’s son, the chatsworth guys a few years ago, andrew lambro(forget his name) a AA stud for the dodgers out of newbury park. .my friends father in law is an area scout for a big league team, been doing it for 10
+ years, he says it is so hard to predict. baseball is a crushing game mentally that you need to be so tough minded to succeed it is scary. failure is the norm in this game……..

  139. Pat M

SJ, I’m not sure you heard about this….Saturday’s Orange County Championship game, Capistrano HS vs. Huntington Beach’s Edison HS at Anahiem Stadium…Tyler Matzak comes in to relieve in the top of 5th inning of a scoreless games….In the bottom of the 5th, he hits a 3-0 fastball into the leftfield seats…..Throws pellets in the 6th and gets the win and the game winning hit as well……I think he’s 14-1 for the season…..

  140. SJ44

    SOS,

Just about every pro scout has said my nephew is hands down the best college catcher in the country.

He’s also a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the best college catcher in the country. The TCU catcher didn’t make the final cut.

He’s a good catcher. Not as good a catcher as Tony.

  141. Boogie Down Bob

I know, thats why its hilarious. Theres some crazy stuff that gets posted on here, but over there is simply insane.

Another genius suggested they trade Dice-K to Milwaukee for Mike Cameron, and another one wanted him traded to Oakland.

Haha I love it. Lugo, Dice-K, and Big Grand Papi. Dead weight.

  142. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

    Fatcessa vs Matt

Fatcessa almost slipped the F word.

  143. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

I could offer other teams dead fish more valuable on the trading block right now than Big Papi.

  144. Bryan

Diet Coke off the rocker again

  145. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

Andrew, that was a big 1st rd. flop, you can’t waste picks like those.

  146. S.A.--Let's get ready to rumble!

“will you stop yelling at me?” LOL

    Matt the caller to Francesa

  147. rconn23

Stop listening to Mike Francesa. You’ll lose brain cells by the minute.

Nick Swisher is a terrible hitter? Yeah, he only has a .920 OPS and is on pace for more than 30 home runs and 100 RBIs.

    Such nonsense.

  148. Bryan

why did Fatcessa get all mad?

  149. MaineYankee

It seemed to me from what I saw of Hansen the pressure in the majors was to much for him. He didn’t make the adjustments he needed to make in order to get ML hitters out.

  150. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

I love listening to Francessa. You can’t get funnier than this guy.

  151. stuart

big papi makes melky’s yr last year look all star caliber.

big poopie’s 2nd HR went about 312 feet off the dominating kris bensen.

big poopie if he does not turn it around soon makes the kei igawa contract look like a tip at a crappy restaurant.

the sux are old and not that atheltic..bay, drew, lowell, poopie, varitek, lugo, are all over 30. youkilis is about 30 also….they better be loaded in the minors because they will be needing some reinforcements soon..

bay and pirnaha boras will milk this year for a lot of moolah, I stay clear of him big time. he is not a good fielder at all and fenway masks a slow footed left fielder big time………

  152. Rebecca-Optimist Prime

SJ: You’re so lucky to have such athletic blood in your family.

  153. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“While CJ Henry was a giant bust, the Yankees that year also took another toolsy two-sport star athlete, a full 242 picks later that turned out pretty well…Mr. Austin Jackson. So, you take the hit for picking a bust in Round 1 but they got some other players that have turned out to be useful in that draft (Gritty Gutty Brett Gardner being another with a TBD still lingering for JB Cox and Alan Horne).”

Good catch Andrew. In the interest of fairness, Boston did grab Buhholtz, Lowrie, Ellsbury and Bowden in the same draft year they grabbed Hansen. Draft is a crapshoot.

Best one of all is the Red Sox taking some slop tossing lefty from Creighton, who is presently toiling in Pawtucket, ONE pick before the Yankees selected Mr. Joba Chamberlain from the University of Nebraska. That one has to have Theo and company losing sleep.

  154. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

People say that Youk and Tex are fighting it out for MVP…so Mauer just doesn’t count? I’d say he’s the front runner now.

  155. SJ44

    Pat M,

He’s a stud. Man, what a talent for someone so young!

The draft is going to be very kind to him tomorrow.

  156. Brandon.. "Jus get 'em out"

“why did Fatcessa get all mad?”

It was about what we were talking about, Georgy swinging RH instead of LH vs Howell, since he struggles vs LHBs, but what set Cokeaholic off was

Matt: I’m a little league coach so I know what I’m talking about.

  157. stuart

swicher is not a great hitter but he is a maddening but good player.

swishers positives are a high OBP,see’s a ton of pitches, good power, and versatility(switch hitter and can play many positions). swishers negatives are low BA and strikes out a ton, the bottom line is swisher is a better then avg. MLB player who when he is in a slump you will want to kill..

  158. Dassit

ortiz tried to steal a base last night lol

  159. MaineYankee

I think there’s a chance the RS may just release Lugo. From what I’ve read and heard it seems they are close to giving up on him. He missed a couple of plays in a game recently that they feel costs them the game. Not the first time it’s happened. Good signing by the best GM in baseball.

  160. Nick in SF

You can’t spell Aceves without *ACE*.

    Ignore him at your peril.

  161. stuart

if the red sux are counting on nick green to keep this up they are delusional.

green also has 9 errors and hits a offspeed pitch like shelly duncan.

  162. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“People say that Youk and Tex are fighting it out for MVP…so Mauer just doesn’t count? I’d say he’s the front runner now.”

I’d put Bay ahead of Youkilis. Mauer would seem the lead guy to me, but the Twins need to move up in the standings IMO. Teixeira is right with Mauer, but the national media will note he didn’t start hitting til Arod got there as an excuse not to vote for him. Little premature anyway to discuss at this point anyway.

  163. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Mauer is still hitting like 400, right?

  164. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

    New thread.

  165. dennis-costanza

SJ- Good luck to everyone involved tomorrow. I know he has made BC proud.

rconn23- agreed on Francessa. However he does make me feel thin and handsome.

MEYankee- Great day here today in ME

    Cheers- dennis

  166. MaineYankee

For the ones that are bothered by Swishers play, remember who the Yankees traded for him. I think Swisher has his limitations but he is much better for this club than Betimitte(sp).

  167. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Mauer is still hitting like 400, right?”

Yeah, but his OBP is only .497 :)

  168. Patrick from CT

Let a Red Sox player win the MVP.
    Who cares?

I want to see the Yankees win the WS!
That is all these players should be playing for…

Win tonight and take 2 out of 3 in Boston. Then start putting some distance on the rest of the AL East…

    Go Yankees!

  169. In my humble opinion ("And Matsui beat the wrap!")

Mike Francessa revealing his intimate knowledge of the relationships of Yankee players…after all, he would know that “Posada doesn’t like Girardi”…so much evidence, after all…

  170. Andrew

Brandon, I think it hurts the Yankees less than other teams to have first round picks that flop, though, because they can take more money-based reaches in later rounds (like, guys who are commited to colleges but might sign for more money than they were expecting). The first round picks have been a lot better since 2005, even though Cole’s pick was a disaster he was a good value talent-wise.

  171. 86w183

Quit hoping for JB Cox and Horne… ain’t happening.

Wasn’t 2005 the last draft for the Tampa Mafia? Austin Jackson and Brett Gardner is all they’ll have to show for it.

Of course last year’s draft isn’t looking all that good, but it’s still early. Drafting Bittle was an incredibly bad move with him being a one pitch guy (slider) and arm problems. He returned to school and had to be shut down before the year was done.

  172. Todd

    Why take out HughES?????? WHY????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
