These must be the Affluent not the effluent fans. There are standards that must be maintained. They need training in rabidity and form. Someone on another blog suggested an anti wave maneuver that I would favor, stand up during the sit down.

Bo I was top deck first row $20 seats. I think there is more than economics at work here.

It is never just one thing.

And after the 5th HR I shook my head a little but will not lose any sleep over it

Betsy: so you are now aware that tomorrow and Tuesday are the same day? You should go back and re-read our conversation from the end of the game thread. ;)

m: you are annoyed that commenters were happy with Phil’s relief apprearance and don’t want them to treat him like a shiny new toy?

Uncle Ellsworth: for me the highlights of the game thread were 1) the good folks who opined that Andy was done a) for the game and b) probably for the good and 2) Trisha called me “special” and said I had bit the hand that fed me.

Or maybe those were lowlights. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference.

  3. Uncle Ellsworth (no one's askin ya how ya doin it just get it done)

    Nick thanks.
you and Trisha need some Dr. Phil time.

vb likened me to DEBORAH in the last thread I’m going to embrace it.

  4. Bo knows

But just the experience, You can casually throw it into conversations. “There I was kicked back as Phil smoked through the heart of the Tampa lineup, finishing by striking out Longoria”. Heh!

  5. Bo knows

That seventh inning was Prime Time.

  6. Nick in SF

Dr. Phil? I think she’d rather I visit Dr. Kevorkian. :(

  7. Giuseppe Franco

Get ready for the NY media to explode with the “Hughes needs to stay in the pen” story for awhile.

So predictable. Too bad it’s not going to stay that way.

Hughes returns to the rotation (in Scranton) when Bruney returns from the DL.

They need both Joba and Hughes to throw 150 IP so neither are going to spend significant time in the pen this season until they hit their innings caps or in October.

  8. Uncle Ellsworth (no one's askin ya how ya doin it just get it done)

Nick i read some of the posts.

What I came away with is the you two have “a history”

BTW I was living in Michegan when Kevorkian was doin his thing – good times..

  9. Nick in SF

That we do, Uncle, that we do. Sigh.

Glad that you got to see the Yankee win leader, Andy Pettitte add to his total. And the bullpen’s shiny new toy, Phil Hughes. And of course, Mo!

  10. djsunyc

ok…i think phil hughes will be a very good starter for us…

but anybody notice the resemblences between hughes and mo’s demeanor on the mound? you see guys hooting and hollering, waiving their arms and everything in the air when they get a save. all mariano does is just shake jorge’s hand. hughes shows the same discipline and strength while he’s out there. very similar to mo.

he just wants the ball back and ready to throw the next pitch.

he also said after the game that he had the adrenaline going coming out of the pen knowing he had to protect a 1 run lead.

i mean the guy was gassing folks at 95mph and then threw that wicked curve…are you kidding me? he was downright PHILTHY…

is hughes the heir apparent to mariano?

    i’m just askin’….

  11. Jerkface

    djsunyc: get out

  12. Uncle Ellsworth (no one's askin ya how ya doin it just get it done)

    Ah Mo.
I grew up in a farm system that shared their toys.

My NEW theory (to go along with the Gehrig bat curse) is that right field “seems more accessable” “looks more inviting” so some are unconsciously going for it.
And it kinda does “feel closer” even though it may not be because the stands are set back.
90% of the game is half mental.

  13. raymagnetic

Yep, Phil Hughes as Mo’s successor with Joba setting him up in the 8th.

Who cares about innings 1-7? Those guys are too good as relievers to waste them in a starters role.

  14. Matt

40% chance of rain tomorrow night in boston….why wouldnt they play? it isnt going to be downpours

  15. luis

    no lester!! TG!!

  16. Pat M

On to the Fens to take 2 of 3, and win yet another series…..This is a much different club that arrives in Boston tomorrow…..

  17. m

    Nick,

lol. No, just teasing those mapping out the pen and Phil’s prominent place in it.

It’s like, “Oooohh! He’s so great! Let’s have him set up.” I think someone even called for him to close.

But as soon as Phil gives up a run, they’ll be all, “What a terrible idea, why is Phil in the pen?!”

I can see the value of Phil in the pen. And he certainly would rather be there than in Scranton. But I think most people would agree that Phil’s value in the future lies as a starting pitcher.

  18. Nick in SF

Phil wrote his own map tonight.

As a starter? Very mixed results.

    From the bullpen? Lights out!

Any clown can start. Phew can phinish like Phil!

  19. m

Well, as great as Livan or Colon (Spanish for clown?) are, I’d much rather have Hughes start than either of them!

But I am glad that Phil is staying to write the story.

  20. Nick in SF

Nick Swisher is only staying to Tweet the story.

  21. Joe

How strong is Pete’s faith in Phil Hughes? He thinks it would be “cool” to have a guy with a career ERA of 5.22 and almost 4 BB/9 as the closer for a day. One of these days, Hughes may just have to actually produce, but that day won’t come as long as he gets no heat from, or at least held accountable by, the media. Lucky guy, especially in this city.

  22. Giuseppe Franco

Maybe Joe hasn’t been paying much attention lately but Hughes has done a good job this season.

He got clobbered against the Orioles but that has essentially been his one aberration.

Hughes is temporarily in the pen because he has pitched so well of late. Don’t take that away from him.

  23. Yankee U

Giuseppe, never let facts get in the way of a good argument.

  24. Mark in Tampa

Looking at the radar map, the rain should be long gone by 7:00.

  25. confused fan

Hope the Wanger won’t get lit up or resurrect big Papi….

  26. ellen

Weather.com has the chance of precipitation at 30% at game time, then reduces it to 20% as the evening goes on. Hope they get the game in.

  27. swingsandmisses

Nice article about SJ’s nephew in the Boston Globe today:
    http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....s_soaring/

  28. SJ44

For those of you interested in draft news…..

One team reached out to us late last night. Negotiations went late into the evening and will continue this morning. Too early to say whether we can get a deal done.

I’ll be more specific when I can later today.

As far as last night, Hughes was VERY impressive.

One part of developing a young pitcher is confidence. The way he threw last night has to do wonders for his confidence.

It would take some creativity but, the Yankees can keep him stretched out while he helps them out of the pen.

    Something to consider.

  29. Oh please.

Oh SJ44, I don’t know you from a hole in the wall, but I’m very excited for you and your family! Enjoy the day.

  30. Betsy

Nick, I looked at a calendar before I went to sleep last night and I’m absolutely confident now that today and Tuesday are the same thing. I figure tomorrow is Wednesday…….

All I want to hear from the media is praise for Phil – I don’t want to hear that Phil should be in the pen permanently (I really don’t think we’ll get that, though). The kid is a starter and he’s going to be a terrific one – he’s a stud, I’ve never believed otherwise. This has been a very good year for Phil’s development and hopefully when Bruney comes back, he will go back to AAA so he can get that 3rd pitch down. He can be a very good weapon in the pen, though – I guess we’ll probably see him Wednesday. That said, I do not like Phil going 8 days without pitching.

  31. Doreen

    SJ44 -

Thank you sharing your and your nephew’s draft experiences with us. Dreams come true are always uplifting and inspiring and I can’t wait to hear where he ends up!

  32. Betsy

Boy, Phil made Longoria look foolish – that curve to make it 1-2 was unhittable.

  33. Betsy

Djsunyc, banish that thought. That is Phil’s demeanor all the time – he’s a SP, not a reliever.

  34. DT - OPPC member (it's in our blood)

Betsy – Thanks for the link to the Mo video on the last post.
Mo in the robe was priceless.

ps: today is now Tuesday. We are going to chip in and buy you a Yankee calendar;-)

SJ – best of luck to Tony today. I hope he joins a good organization. A pinstriped one would be best.

  35. Betsy

SJ, I’m with Doreen – thanks for sharing you and your nephew’s experience. Your nephew is talented and he works hard – he deserves everything that’s coming to him.

I think Phil needs to develop his third pitch (in AAA, where games don’t count) so that he can reach his very high ceiling and become a top-flight pitcher. He can rejoin the rotation when Joba goes in the pen……but if the Yanks make the playoffs, he will be a nice weapon to have in the pen. He ripped through the heart of the Rays order yesterday……

  36. Glenn

Tony Sanchez will not fall anywhere near to the 28th selection where Boston’s stinking mitts can get at him.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....s_soaring/

  37. Betsy

DT, you’re welcome! I thought that was hilarious – Mo has a wondefully sly sense of humor (love his comment about going after his teammates harder now that he has a gavel, lol)

  38. Dr. Cox

Hopefully its nicer in Boston than the “Darkened Monsoon” we are currently getting here in New York City.

I mean seriously, its like Night Time out there!

  39. Vader

SJ…I going to hedge my bets that your nephew will be a Pirate, which becoming a Major leaguer is a dream come true, but becoming a Pirate…let’s just that they are better than the Somali Pirates.

As for Phil, he was popping the mitt last night and the breaking stuff was sharp.

I believe that starting pitchers are more valuable than relievers, but what is wrong with learning your trade in the bullpen like the old days?

What is the worst thing that can happen…he stays in the pen and becomes a future closer?

  40. Vader

Dr. Cox…how is it going with kicking the smokes?

  41. Betsy

    http://www.nj.com/yankees/inde.....ira_2.html

Good for Mark……..and I don’t agree with this guy’s take on Tex as a dull interview. Sheesh……

  42. ellen

SJ – thanks for sharing your nephew’s story with us! It’s very easy to cheer for someone who’s worked so hard. Good luck to him, and to your family.

  43. Patrick from CT

Good win last night! Every win is a good win!
Too bad they had to use Mo though.
I like Coke but I see him more as a match up guy than the 8th inning guy.
Phil looked great and should be ready to backup Wang if Ace pitches tonight. I’d like to see Phil stay with the big league club, but he’s got to pitch more then 1-2 innings per week. Let him go 2-3-4 at a time; he could have finish that game last night. I guess they only let him go 1 so he’d be ready for Boston, but…

  44. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Good for Mark……..and I don’t agree with this guy’s take on Tex as a dull interview. Sheesh……”

So what if he is. Jeter’s been a dull interview his entire career. Ain’t about interviewability. It’s about results on the field. Teixeira is pretty vanilla, but he rakes and does his job at 1st. That’s all that matters.

  45. 86w183

If Phil warms up at any point tonight it will be a strong indication the Yanks are toying with the idea of keeping him out there a while longer. My guess is they do not use him tonight so he can give them length tomorrow if need be.

Good luck Tony Sanchez and all the kids in the draft. Here’s hoping the Yankees draft a corner outfielder with power and maybe a “shortstop of the future” with their high picks. No injury rehab experiments and not another freakin’ RHP please! I know you don’t draft for MLB positional need, but you should for organizational need.

  46. Coach6423

Id kill for a thunderstorm. It is 39 and raining here.

  47. Bad Scooter

SJ – Great day for Tony and your family. Good luck and enjoy it.

  48. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Hopefully its nicer in Boston than the “Darkened Monsoon” we are currently getting here in New York City.”

3 days of mid 50’s temps and on again, off again showers according to weather reports. Doesn’t seem very good, but does seem playable.

  49. BD

“How strong is Pete’s faith in Phil Hughes? He thinks it would be “cool” to have a guy with a career ERA of 5.22 and almost 4 BB/9 as the closer for a day.”

Are you talking about Hughes or Mo? Their stats as a starter are nearly identical: Rivera’s ERA is 5.51 with 4.03 BB/9.

Of course, Hughes blows Rivera away as a reliever: career ERA of 0.00 and no walks.

  50. Betsy

Steve, that’s true, lol………I just don’t like players being called dull because they don’t say ridiculous things

  51. Ryan

What is the name of SJ’s nephew. I’d like to monitor him through the draft tonight.

  52. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“If Phil warms up at any point tonight it will be a strong indication the Yanks are toying with the idea of keeping him out there a while longer”

Pretty dazzling effort last night. He’d go a long way to resolving some of the bullpen problems, real or imagined, that have been discussed of late. Not sure that’s the best thing for his development, but that was a WOW performance.

  53. Ryan

Rivera’s ERA is 3.20 you joke.

  54. Oh please.

Aww, someone made a pi-e joke.

  55. Doreen

What a disgusting morning weather-wise here. Dark. Really dark. And gray. And wet. With thunder. Yuck. :)

Is summer EVER going to get here????

The Yankees have been playing well, though the errors in the last few games are unsettling, if only because they went so long without them. And it seems every time they make one (or at least, most times) the other team manages to capitalize. Can’t make too many mistakes in Boston, because they will pounce. So, all I’m asking for is some clean, well-played games in Boston. I’m hoping for a couple of wins, will be happy with one, as long as all the games are good.

The thing about Boston is that the Yankees can’t depend on “getting to” the bullpen against them. They’re going to have to be more consistent offensively. However, the Yankees have had success against the Boston ‘pen, so who knows? Also, even though they’re 0-5, I believe they could have won at least 3 of those games. The results weren’t favorable to the Yankees, but I never felt they were overmatched.

  56. Vader

Ryan, I think he was talking about Mo’s ERA as a starter and SJ’s nephew is Tony Sanchez of BC.

  57. sunny615

Congrats to you nephew SJ44. I also think he’ll be a Pirate.

  58. jennifer

Nick Swisher came by and picked the judge’s brain for a few Manhattan restaurant recommendations before revealing that he was the most heavily fined member of the team (shocker). Among his crimes: doing a postgame interview shirtless and laughing too hard in Kangaroo Court.

I loved when she told Mo, there were quite a few ladies out there upset that he fined Swish for his postgame shirtless interviews. Asked him to rethink it.

  59. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

    SJ:

Once drafted and having the financials locked up, where do you see your nephew heading? Hi-A?

  60. Vince

As a reminder, the draft takes place at 6:00 PM via MLB Extra Innings.

  61. pat

    SJ

    Good luck to Tony today.

I don’t know you or him and somehow I feel invested in his success. He’s going to have lots of built in fans from here as long as he ends up somewhere that doesn’t hurt the Yankees.

  62. jennifer

    SJ44

Just so you are aware, your impersonator was back last night. Have you asked Pete to do something about it?

  63. jennifer

    Good for you Tex.

“I’m tired of hearing about that stuff,” Teixeira snapped. “We’ve crushed balls all over the place. We hit more home runs today than they did, didn’t we? Someone’s got to give us credit eventually.”

  64. jennifer

Did everyone hear the postgame interview with Ozzie Guillen. He went off on his team basically said none of them belong in the majors. It was quite rude. I don’t really get how he still has a job. he is a jerk.

I would be curious to see the interaction with Swish and him when the Yanks play the soxs.

  65. MaineYankee

I’m listening to local sports radio and their ripping Sterling for his HR calls.

They aren’t talking to confidently about this series. The host is say he thinks the Yankees will take 2 of these games. He admits the Yankees are better now than when they played earlier.

For the people that worry about the errors the Yankees have made lately the RS have a black hole at ss so it can even out.

  66. JohnC

    SJ44

Who is your draft candidate in your family?

  67. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“I’m listening to local sports radio and their ripping Sterling for his HR calls.”

They are pretty stupid. Really stupid, actually. He seems oblivious to it though, so let other take their shots.

  68. Mark in Tampa

It is annoying to hear the constant bellyaching by the other teams and the media, but if the Stadium is getting in the heads of the other teams, the Yanks can have a huge home field advantage. For example, this excuse from under .500 Rays manager Joe Maddon:

“I just think that we did not hit enough balls to right-center,” manager Joe Maddon said. “There’s that conveyor belt that goes out there. You just get it onto that conveyor belt, and you’re in pretty good shape. Although, they hit some balls really well. But there were some conveyor-belt homers going out there, too. We just have to go to right-center more often.”

  69. Brandon ----> Brandon 1 Cena 0

“Boy, Phil made Longoria look foolish – that curve to make it 1-2 was unhittable.”

It was nasty. AJ taught him the new grip and now that curve is just nasty. He looked like Papelbon that inning. Just painted the corner and made them look foolish.

  70. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Did everyone hear the postgame interview with Ozzie Guillen. He went off on his team basically said none of them belong in the majors.”

Ozzie probably pretty close to out of the goodwill the 2005 World Series bought him. Wouldn’t be shocked if he were gone after this season if they fail to make the playoffs. That said, Kenny Williams has done him no favors in terms of putting together a team, and Ozzie’s right to say several of them shouldn’t be in the majors.

    —————————————————-

That is like a nervous laugh.

Not wanting to let on that they are nervous about this power house team that is coming in. So they find something to rip on the Yankees about because there isn’t much to find fault with them right now3.

  72. Brandon ----> Brandon 1 Cena 0

ESPN clocked his FB to Longoria at 96 mph, YES had it at 94 so was it 95 ?

  73. MaineYankee

Teams need to stop complaining about the hr’s and tell their pitchers to stop making mistake pitches. The Yankees have good hitters that can hit mistakes out.

  74. Trevor

I’m tired of hearing Maddon and whatever Ray player comment on the new YS.
They’ve talked about it more then any other team coming in.

  75. Mark in Tampa

    Brandon,

Gameday had one at 95, one at 94 to Longoria, and all of the fastballs to Upton at 94.

  76. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Not wanting to let on that they are nervous about this power house team that is coming in.”

Fans maybe. Think the Red Sox are way beyond getting nervous about the Yankees. Honestly think these games are not nearly as big a deal to the players as they are to the two fan bases. Sabathia sort of said as much in his e-mail response piece on the blog yesterday. He referred to Thursday night’s at Fenway as “just another start”.

  77. Brandon ----> Brandon 1 Cena 0

Thanks Mark, w/e it was, it was pin point accurate.

  78. MaineYankee

Anyone familiar with Bob Marley would like to hear him on sports radio here. He’s cracking jokes about steroids. Pretty funny stuff. Some good ones about Manny and the female hormones he took.

  79. Vader

ESPN had him hitting 96, but you don’t know where he was really sitting…all I know is that he looked filthy.

  80. rmel

“It was nasty. AJ taught him the new grip and now that curve is just nasty. He looked like Papelbon that inning. Just painted the corner and made them look foolish.”

totally agree….After that Cleveland series back in 2007, I felt Hughes not Joba would be a good bullpen candidate. Hughes has 2 pitches and both are plus pitches, his Fastball and Curve…While Joba has 4 plus pitches…I know people hate putting young hard throwers in the pen, but unless Hughes get at least a 3rd or 4th pitch, the bullpen may be the best place for him…Hey Papelbon is a young hard thrower and he is in the pen….One last thing…We hear all the time about how imported it is to develop young starters, think to yourself how many young hard throwing closers are there in baseball….In fact check out some of the closers on other teams…its pretty sad…A team like the Yankees that must win every year….Its equally important to quality starts and relief pitchers…just a thought

  81. Coach6423

These games don’t mean anymore than the other 159. If we win 1 out of 3, we leave Fenway in 1st place. Keep winning series, thats all they have to do.

  82. five iron from fenway

Re. Hughes – I have seen various reports about the cutter.
Can someone give me a grade for Phil for that pitch? I think that is a solid third offering.
To me the tipping point for Phil to going from good to potentially great is a change up. If he can ever get that to at least an average offering to keep hitters honest it would be immense for his development. The question is can he develop that pitch in the majors, the minors or at all.
I think Kontos is a guy that has two plus pitches and can power up a fastball that would also be a good bullpen candidate.

  83. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“I’m tired of hearing Maddon and whatever Ray player comment on the new YS.
They’ve talked about it more then any other team coming in.”

They aren’t wrong, but they didn’t take advantage of it, so they should shut up and think about that when they come back later in the year. Coming into this series, the Yankees had only outhomered opponents at the Stadium by a 50-46 count. Other teams have been taking advantage too. The Rays didn’t.

  84. Mark in Tampa

“He looked like Papelbon that inning”

I didn’t see Phil making weird faces, grabbing his crotch, and jumping around the field after retiring the side. :)

  85. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“Can someone give me a grade for Phil for that pitch? I think that is a solid third offering.”

Only noticed the heater and the curve being thrown last night.

  86. jennifer

“If this was the 1980s, [none] of these guys would be in the big leagues right now because if you hit .210-.230 and you can’t execute, I don’t think you should be out here,” Guillen

  87. Trevor

“Only noticed the heater and the curve being thrown last night”

I believe he threw a cutter to Upton. The pitch was 88mph so I assume.

  88. bdog375

That is an intense storm system, but it flew through the DC area (where I am right now) REALLY fast last night (they said traveling 30 mph). I think there will definitely be a game tonight.

  89. Patrick from CT

Damon and Jeter are hitting more homers this year in large part to the new stadium. Oh well, it works for me…
Joe Maddon, the ESPN guys, and whom ever else can talk all they want, it is what it is. They will make changes to the stadium in the off season if necessary. I think the bigger problem is the fans being right on the fence…
As for Phil Hughes in the Pen, I think it only works if he get’s enough work so that he can start a game when the time comes. He will be needed as a starter again this year; you can count on that…

  90. Doreen

    jennifer -

That quote by Guillen – well, he’s right. BUT I don’t know how a manager goes off on his team and expects his team to play hard for him. Maybe his particular group of guys gets “psyched” with an “I’ll show him” attitude that actually gets them going, and Guillen plays into that. (Just offering a suggestion; I think Guillen has shown he’s certifiable too many times to really give him the benefit of the doubt – )

  91. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“If this was the 1980s, [none] of these guys would be in the big leagues right now because if you hit .210-.230 and you can’t execute, I don’t think you should be out here,” Guillen”

    Jennifer:

In fairness, they are sending 3-4 guys out there everyday who really have no business starting for a major league baseball team.

  92. five iron from fenway

I didn’t mean to evaluate the cutter from last night only, I meant more broadly as a pitch.

  93. Rishi

Best of luck to Tony, SJ…

And that WASN’T me messing with the fomatting last night :) I was at the hotel, tucked in with a high fever and upper respiratory infection…when I’m too tired/weak to log on to the computer, you know it is bad!!

“I didn’t see Phil making weird faces, grabbing his crotch, and jumping around the field after retiring the side. :)

thank god for that….his cutter is a average 3rd pitch and your right if he had a change up I would really think against the bullpen….but as of right now his fastball/curve combo are great for the bullpen……If you watch his starts you notice if he is not locating his curve or fastball he gets hit around….He does not have a quality 3rd pitch to go to….Seeing a lineup 3 times you need at least 3 pitches….that is why Joba is a starter, he has 4 pitches and always did…Phil even in the minors was a Fastball/Curve pitcher

  95. hokiehill

Another Mo save on a Pettitte start… I wonder how far up they will push that record.

  96. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

Rain tomorrow would be very advantageous if we win today. If we lose-not so much.

  97. Mark in Tampa

Dave Kingman played in the ’80s with a .236 lifetime average. Luckily for Ozzie, he said .230s and not .240s since he himself had two full seasons in the .240s and two full seasons in the .250s, with a lifetime avg. of .264. But, at least he did have some power, after all, he did have 28 lifetime home runs.

  98. swingsandmisses

Personally I’m more interested in the draft tonight than Red Sox/Yankees. They play all the time now so it’s not as interesting as when they played the balanced schedule. I re-read the draft chapter in Moneyball last night and it was even more interesting in retrospect, knowing which players ultimately became stars. Plus Billy Beane’s obsession with Swisher is always hilarious to re-visit.

  99. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

This is a great night for baseball with Yanks-Sox and the draft.

A win today would be big with possible rain tomorrow, although I bet you we play tomorrow. Everybody loves Yanks Sox games and they’ll try hard to get it in, I would think.

  100. Rishi

“They haven’t made an error in 12 straight games. That’s not a typo … They’ve pushed their run differential into the black, a nice achievement given the number of 22-4 pastings they absorbed earlier in the season … The nice man on the television was saying the other day that “Melky Cabrera is the guy you want at the plate when the game’s on the line.” Me, I’ll stick with Mark Teixeira or Alex Rodriguez, thanks … Per the great LoHud Yankees blog, they’re scoring as many runs per game with A-Rod as they did without him. The difference, as it usually is, has been the pitching.”

this from cbssports.com last week…nice to see a shout out to the old blog here…

  101. Patrick

“FWIW, Pettitte said it was Mo-like tonight.”

This is a quote from the last thread about Phil’s cutter I guess. The fact of the matter is, Phil threw 1 cutter last night to Longoria. It was clocked at 88 which is the usual velocity for his cutter. He explained in his post-game interview that occasionally his fastball has some cut on it. Coming out of the bullpen on so much rest allowed Phil to empty the tank and put extra velocity and movement on his fastball.

The bottom line is, two negatives will happen if Phil stays in the pen. He will not be able to stay stretched out and he won’t work on his 3rd and 4th pitches.

Our starters go too long for him to get any kind of regular long-relief work. If he stays in the pen and gets one or two innings at a time he won’t be able to step in and start games. We saw what happened with Wang.

As a reliever he won’t use the change-up or cutter that much. As we saw last night he didn’t throw the change and he threw 1 cutter. To be a truly successful starting pitcher he needs to improve those 2 pitches.

Unfortunately Hughes needs to go back to AAA when Bruney returns. Cashman flat out said that he will probably be going to Scranton once Bruney is healthy. The fans aren’t going to like it but it’s the best for Hughes’ long term development and for the Yankees.

Has anyone seen Boston Dirt Dogs this morning? They have 1/2 a page devoted to encouraging Red Sox fans to boo A-Rod tonight b/c of all the steroid stuff.

    I’m sorry – Manny Ramirez, anyone? David Oritz…? Hypocrites…

    http://www.bostondirtdogs.com/

  103. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

I want Melky up with the game on the line after this season!

Tell you what, I’d be happy with any of the names mentioned.

  104. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

I wish we could keep Hughes in the pen, but it seems impossible.

  105. S.A.--Youuuuse is the new Jobber?

SJ44-If you are around, best of luck to your nephew today.

The weather is just gross today

  106. Ace

If the Sox fans boo A-Rod for steroids then they are the biggest hypocrites out there.

  107. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

The Sox will definitely boo A-Rod. Who cares? That’s part of the game.

  108. Mark in Tampa

“If the Sox fans boo A-Rod for steroids then they are the biggest hypocrites out there.”

When they stop booing him for any reason, that is when we have a problem. For example, is there much fun or reason for booing Ortiz right now?

  109. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

Oh, it’s fun to boo Ortiz. Why stop now?

  110. Dr. Cox

Does anyone know any Yankee Blogs that just RIP on the Red Sox and other teams the way Boston Dirt Dogs does??

  111. five iron from fenway

Varitek, Gagne, Millar, Nixon, Lowell – these guys are all on the possible list for me.
The Red Sox are certainly not immune. Even the in the Red Sox report (I mean the Mitchell report) is stated that the Red Sox were sending emails back and forth before they signed Gagne regarding his use of PEDs. So they knowingly signed a user.

  112. five iron from fenway

Having lived in Boston for 14 years (after growing up and living in the NY area for 20 years), I can attest to the fact that Boston’s actions are related directly to the inferiority complex they feel towards NY. For Boston it is always about the comparison to NY.
NY as an entity is above Boston and does not feel the need to stoop to their level.

  113. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

I’m thinking Big Papi and Nomar probably used roids’. Manny of course. Maybe Varitek, him I’m not sure.

  114. CB

    SJ,

Good luck to Tony, youself and the rest of your family today.

You obviously have much more insight into the process than I do looking at it from the outside but it seems that in the last 24-48 hours signability issues and injury concerns are coming to the forefront on a lot of guys. And those guys could be falling.

I think this is setting itself up for Tony to have a very good day.

  115. five iron from fenway

PH is a SP – Forgot about Nomar but he is a definite yes. They also had Mo Vaugh, Jeremy Giambi and Jose Canseco.

  116. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

I’m kind of half hoping Straussburg (no clue if that’s spelled right) is a bust, if only because of all the talk and praise of him. Annoying.

  117. Brandon ----> Brandon 1 Cena 0

Pettitte compared Hughes to Mo, shut up before they keep him in the BP. Coming up next.. Yusses Rules

  118. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

Yeah, Canseco, Vaughn, and Jem Giambi absolutely juiced F.I.F.F.

  119. GreenBeret7

Yankee fans have very little room to talk about other fans being hypocrites. They have no problems booing their own players for no being perfect.

  120. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

You wonder though, what if Hughes keeps doing bad as a starting pitcher? THEN how would he be looked at in the bullpen?

  121. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

I’ve never been a guy who made that big a deal of booing, but I found it really odd when A-Rod was booed for gorunding into a DP-with the Yanks up by 2 runs in the eighth. I kind of blinked and said, “You’re kidding right?”. Weird.

  122. Trevor

Arod has always gotten booed at Fenway. That’s nothing new. Only difference now would be some steroids chants from the Fenway faithful.

  123. Mark in Tampa

re: Varitek. This is from CBSsports.com’ s Larry Dobrow last week. Certainly not definitive, but I was surprised to see it from a writer on a respected site, not just a blog poster:

“I have no reason to believe Jason Varitek is anything other than chemically pure and the greatest leader since Charlemagne, but he has hit 10 homers in 159 plate appearances after hitting 13 in 483 last season. If a Yankee player enjoyed such a late-in-life power spike, BoSox fans would fall over themselves to chant “Steroids! J’accuse! Steroids!” Consider this a preemptive returning of the favor.”

  124. Tom in N.J.

SJ, Let me add my voice to the chorus of Good Lucks to Tony-unless he gets picked by the Red Sox….

  125. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

    Gorunding is grounding.

Man, I want to beat Boston really badly.

  126. Yankee U

Gee the boston fans are going to boo ARod tonight? I hope the media will be there to catch that historic event.

  127. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

Mark in Tampa, I love it. People realize the truth.

  128. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

    New thread.

God I want to sweep the Roid Sox this week

    …………………

It’s the little brother syndrome. It’s family hating traditions from 86 years of losing and NYC is big and busy.

  133. Boogie Down Bob

    Vince,

I live in the Boston area, been here for only a year and a half, so my knowledge isn’t as deep as yours, but I think you hit it right on the head.

  134. Jay

any chance the game gets played today?

SJ44 – congratulations to you and your family! Your nephew sounds like a gem – you must be very proud of him. Hope he doesn’t fall into the hands of the enemy lol. Wishing him much success in the draft.

  138. Ridin this wave

    raining in Boston?

  139. AJ

Weather.com says that it’ll only be cloudy with 20% rain during the game time hours. Hopefully they are right.

  140. Sarah

AJ44 – Congratulations to you and family for mentoring Tony thru college and his baseball career. I sincerely hope he gets a good draft pick.

Hope the game doesn’t get rained out today. I hate rain delays or postponements. Hughes was great yesterday and Coke was pretty good to. I love the way Posada goes to the mound to calm down the pitcher. He did that to Veras last week. The look on Veras’ face was of shock. I don’t think he heard a word he said.

  141. Sarah

I meant SJ, sorry. Am thinking too hard about AJ pitching tonight.

Here’s a question to the group: If football, soccer, basketball, hockey, have a regulation dimension to their respective playing fields – - why doesn’t baseball?
