There appears to be hope for baseball

The grounds crew is readying the field for batting practice here at Fenway Park and the skies, for now, are clear.

If that changes, we’ll let you know.

  1. Donnie

    Sweet.

Let’s get this off on the right foot by reminding Beckett we can hit him. Hard.

  2. declineoptions07

Weather forecast for Boston looks pretty benign.

  3. Laura - Win together, strike out alone!

Rain, rain, go away. Come back another day; like in July. :)

  4. The Monk

    Dang.

Wanted a rainout so we could push Wang to the Mess series and not have him get pounded by the Sawx.

  5. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

Laura, it’s not Manny in the wings, it’s Youk. Although I guess not anymore with Ortiz moved back in the lineup.

  6. AeroFANatic

I have a feeling Wang will dominate the Sox. Don’t know WHY I feel that way, I just think as a groundball pitcher going against FB hitters like Bay and Youk, gives us the advantage.

  7. SJ44

Draft update……Watch early and hope folks live up to their word.

  8. m

    SJ,

Thanks for the update. Though you were big-timing us!

Think we’ll see something before first pitch?

  9. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

I have absolutely no clue how Wang will do vs. the Sox.

  10. Matt

you guys are yankees fans? after losing 6 straight to the sox dating back to last year, you guys want a rainout to move wang back? didnt wang dominate the sox last year? yes, i know that was last year but he looked sharp in the game against the rangers the first 3 innings, he just lost it when his pitch count got higher…….who wants a rainout????? and you do realize the yankees tag wakefield right? they sit on that knuckleball and smash it around the park…..why in gods name would you want a rainout? yes i think it will be a higher scoring game tomorrow night but you dont want a rainout to mess with the rotation your delusional

  11. JGS

Fenway has not been kind to Wang…but he also threw the best game of his career there last April (CG, 1 run, 2 hits)

  12. AD

2 outta 3 this series, I can feel it. This is a Big Start for AJ! He needs to make up for his blown 6-run lead debacle.

  13. JGS

they tag Wakefield, and they tag Beckett (5.80 ERA in 14 starts against the Yanks).

Lester is the only pitcher on the Sox the Yankees don’t hit around

  14. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

Tomorrow’s going to be a real shootout that could go either way since the Yankees offense is better but the Sox bullpen is better.

  15. S.A.--Youuuuse is the new Jobber?

Good luck to you and your nephew today SJ44

  16. Doreen

    SJ44 -

    Thanks for the update.

“The waiting is the hardest part.”

  17. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

I seriously don’t have any sort of feeling, good or bad, going into this one. No clue how we’ll do.

Where’s trisha when you need her to be assuredly positive?

  18. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

    Good luck SJ.

I asked before and I feel kinda bad, but what’s SJ’s nephew’s name again?

  19. Brandon ----> Brandon 1 Cena 0

Yankees are high on Heathcott (a 5 tool Johnny Damon ?) and Renfroe (reminds me of JJ Hardy or that Oriole who I dare better not use his name)

  20. dennis-costanza

    Sanchez. Catcher for Boston College.

  21. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

    New thread.

    Game thread is up!

  22. BD

Way too many variables in baseball to predict how a particular game will go. We tend to focus just on the SP matchup, but a lot depends on how well individual batters are seeing the ball and swinging the bat. Also, the home plate ump can really make a big difference on how the pitchers do. Then, of course, there’s dumb luck. Sox have the edge tonight playing at home and starting their hottest pitcher; but it’s probably no better than 60-40 in their favor.

  23. PHIL HUGHES IS A STAHTIN' PITCHA'!

    dennis-costanza, thank you.

  24. AD

Fenway has not been kind to Wang…but he also threw the best game of his career there last April (CG, 1 run, 2 hits)

Fenway is not kind to a lot of pitchers, that green thing out in left turns every routine fly ball out into a double.

But hey lets focus on the Conveyor Belt at The New Yankee Stadium in right field, and make sure that the sox get a pass on everything… You know what… with that Attitude I think I could easily get a job on Baseball Tonight

Wang Career Numbers at Fenway btw in 7 Starts (3 -3, 5.11 era, – 25 ER in 44 Innings)

  25. Trevor

Wow some caller thinks the Mets are better then the Yankees. ha ha

  26. Steve B (Wouldn't it be cool if AJ's ERA was 3.14)

“and they tag Beckett (5.80 ERA in 14 starts against the Yanks).”

Much as this is not the same Yankees team Boston saw earlier in the year, I don’t think the Yankees will be seeing the same Beckett they saw either. This will be a tough one tonite. Need Burnett’s A game.

This appearred on the Yankee.com site:

    First-round buzz

The Yankees could highlight an athletic outfield prospect like California’s Brett Jackson on their Draft board, and there has been talk about Southern California shortstop Grant Green and Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez. One wonders how flexible the idea of a Draft budget is for the Yankees, who shelled out $423.5 million to lock up Sabathia, Teixeira and Burnett without much of a second though

Right now, Wang is a sick puppy. His career ERA at the Ratnest is 5.11 with a WHIP over 1.5 and a bb/k ratio of 20/14. Last year, he pitched one game at the Ratnest and was brilliant. Take away that game, and his numbers are dreadful. And he has sucked this year.

Games against Bahstin count double. The two that the Yanks lost in April at Rathole that they should have won (4-2 lead bottom 9, 6-0 lead the next day) are the difference between a one-game lead and a five-game lead over the Sawx (win both, and the Yanks are 36-21, Sawx are 31-26).

So why should I want to give away a game to the Red Sawx with Wang barely able to get a Cape Cod League team out after the third inning?

Whom would you start tomorrow night if not Wang?

  31. Joekuh - Be a man and put your name on it. - Doug Mientkiewicz

Le Sigh. IF Wang doesn’t have his best game tomorrow, we still have the day after that to play. Sometimes you lose a battle to win a war. And that’s what the AL East is. An absolute war.

I’m willing to Let Wang get knocked around a little if it gets him a little closer to his 19 win form. And if he has a good game tomorrow, I bet you wont give him any credit for it.

Joba was supposed to pitch in Boston this week but was changed so AJ could pitch against Beckett. Joba then gets the first game against the Mets.
