Yeah, that’s a great bragging point. “My book has been signed by Alfred Santasiere”, to which people resond, “Who”?

Why couldn’t Yogi sign them, it’s his museum and he wrote the intro.

  2. Boogie Down Bob June 11th, 2009 at 10:16 am

I still love our team. Today is going to be a great day, and by the time this day is over, we’re going to be back in a tie for first place.

  3. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 10:23 am

We may be tied for first, but w/a rather bad taste in our mouths.

  4. AD June 11th, 2009 at 10:34 am

You can probably put most (not all) of the blame on AJ Burnett for the Yanks despicable display against the Sox this season
A)Gives up 6 run Lead in April
B)Completely phones one in on Tuesday

  5. Fan Interference June 11th, 2009 at 10:34 am

There is alot of work to do, and it starts today.

  6. Fan Interference June 11th, 2009 at 10:36 am

“You can probably put most (not all) of the blame on AJ Burnett for the Yanks despicable display against the Sox this season
A)Gives up 6 run Lead in April
B)Completely phones one in on Tuesday”

Why do I get the sneaking feeling that we will eventually hear that AJ Burnett is hurt but not telling anyone?

  7. John June 11th, 2009 at 10:38 am

Bottom line: the Yankees win today, they’re back in first place. Say all you want about the 0-7; the last two games were lost as a result of extremely poor starting pitching. If Wang hadn’t dug such a big hole, the outcome may have been different. Win tonight.

  8. William Buckner June 11th, 2009 at 10:42 am

Cooler heads…If the Yankees win today, they’ve done ok this series.

The Red Sox are the home team and they are extremely tough at home. They had the pitching advantage in the 1st two games.

If CC does what he’s paid $20 million + to do, this series isn’t a total loss and can be built off of.

  9. Carl June 11th, 2009 at 10:44 am

Damon calls out himself, Jeter, and Alex.

  10. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 10:44 am

    AD , you’re right.

The thing about tied for first is that on the last day of the season as it is there would be no one game playoff, the division would go to the Red Sox bbecause of head to head records.

“Why do I get the sneaking feeling that we will eventually hear that AJ Burnett is hurt but not telling anyone?”

I don’t think he’s hurt. He’d be crazy to jeopardize his future by going out there hurt.

  13. Steve B June 11th, 2009 at 10:46 am

“Damon calls out himself, Jeter, and Alex.”

He forgot the “#5 hitter” in his little roll call.

  14. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 11th, 2009 at 10:47 am

“He forgot the ”#5 hitter” in his little roll call.”

Cano needs to be moved down in the order. He’s not ready to be the number 5 guy. I thought he was, but he’s not.

  15. ham fighters June 11th, 2009 at 10:49 am

just need a win tonight from cc to end the 0-fer and then smack the mets. yankees fans freak about the socks games, but tied for first is still tied for first no matter who you beat.

  16. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 11th, 2009 at 10:49 am

What’s the rotation for the Mutts series?

  17. Andrew June 11th, 2009 at 10:52 am

I believe it’s Joba, Pettitte and Burnett for the Yankees versus Maine, Livan and Johan for the Mets. That’s off the top of my head though so it may be wrong.

  18. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 11th, 2009 at 10:53 am

AJ versus Johan? That can’t turn out good.

  19. ham fighters June 11th, 2009 at 10:54 am

im saying right here and now that this rotation spot is phil yew’s for the rest of this season and probably the next 5 seasons or more. a big yankees star is about to be born (reborn?)

  20. ANSKY June 11th, 2009 at 10:54 am

It’d be interesting to see if flip-flopping Tex & A-Rod in the lineup, temporarily, would help A-Rod get his groove back.

  21. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 11th, 2009 at 10:54 am

We also need to keep an eye on TOR, who have turned on the jets again. They are right behind us.

  22. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 10:55 am

We will probably win two of three from the Mutts and CC will probably win today.

  23. Andrew June 11th, 2009 at 10:56 am

Interested to see how Johan fares in the “bandbox” on Sunday. He is prone to the longball. My only game at U.S. Government-Owned Field he gave up an absolute monster home run to Dunn of the Nats. On that note, I will be interested to see if Adam Dunn can reach the upper (third) deck in RF when they come to town next week.

  24. Stultus Magnus June 11th, 2009 at 10:59 am

I agree about Cano and I’ve said it before, he’s not a number 5 hitter, not now, he doesn’t protect Alex in any way and has no patience. But then I get called a whiner by the goons. So what is one to do? Just hope he improves.

  25. raymagnetic June 11th, 2009 at 11:00 am

“We may be tied for first, but w/a rather bad taste in our mouths.”

Maybe you’ll have a bad taste in your mouth but I doubt the team will.

After all first place is still first place.

  26. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:01 am

We can’t expect Burnett, with the way he’s been pitching, to outpitch Johan Santana.

  27. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:02 am

raymagnetic, I’m sure they will. just Johnny “Big Series” Damon.

  28. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 11th, 2009 at 11:02 am

“I agree about Cano and I’ve said it before, he’s not a number 5 hitter, not now, he doesn’t protect Alex in any way and has no patience.”

Cano has some Jekyll and Hyde moments. During some at bats, he is patient and he waits for the best pitch to hit. Other times, like last night, he’s swinging at anything. That is extremely frustrating. Until he can be consistent, I’d move him down in the order.

  29. raymagnetic June 11th, 2009 at 11:02 am

“I don’t think he’s hurt. He’d be crazy to jeopardize his future by going out there hurt.”

Jeopardize his future? Is there a contract he’s playing for or something?

He’s getting his 82 million regardless.

  30. Stultus Magnus June 11th, 2009 at 11:03 am

“We can’t expect Burnett, with the way he’s been pitching, to outpitch Johan Santana.”

Santana hasn’t been invincible lately. The Yanks have a good shot against him. Let’s just hope Burnett can put a decent start together. Or a string of them rather…

  31. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 11th, 2009 at 11:03 am

“Maybe you’ll have a bad taste in your mouth but I doubt the team will.”

The team is probably relieved that despite their record against BOS, they are still in the hunt. However, you have to believe that the fact that they have not beaten BOS this year is a knot in their stomachs. I know it’s one in mine.

  32. raymagnetic June 11th, 2009 at 11:04 am

“We also need to keep an eye on TOR, who have turned on the jets again. They are right behind us.”

Guess they’re right behind Boston as well then, no?

  33. Laura - Win together, strike out alone! June 11th, 2009 at 11:04 am

“Jeopardize his future? Is there a contract he’s playing for or something?
He’s getting his 82 million regardless.”

I was referring to his health. I doubt he would want to make any injury worse than it already is.

  34. raymagnetic June 11th, 2009 at 11:05 am

“We can’t expect Burnett, with the way he’s been pitching, to outpitch Johan Santana.”

Just cause you can’t expect it to happen doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

  35. raymagnetic June 11th, 2009 at 11:06 am

“I was referring to his health. I doubt he would want to make any injury worse than it already is.”

Doesn’t matter if he gets hurt or not, he’s still getting his money so he isn’t exactly jeopardizing his future.

In fact he couldn’t probably care less about getting hurt.

  36. raymagnetic June 11th, 2009 at 11:07 am

“The team is probably relieved that despite their record against BOS, they are still in the hunt. However, you have to believe that the fact that they have not beaten BOS this year is a knot in their stomachs. I know it’s one in mine.”

The team probably likely realizes that it’s a LONG season and they still have 11 more games against Boston.

Keep winning series and they’ll be in the playoffs. Until this series they had won 8 of 9 series.

Eventually they’ll win a couple of series against the Red Sox as well.

  37. Fran (the original) and OPPC member June 11th, 2009 at 11:09 am

    Andrew,

The Mets actually flipped their rotation for the weekend – Livan will pitch Friday and Maine Saturday.

  38. Steve B June 11th, 2009 at 11:09 am

Anyone hear Sterling’s call of Swisher’s misplay last night?

  39. Mark in Tampa June 11th, 2009 at 11:13 am

0 and 7 to this point means that there will be a 7 and 1 stretch later, or something close to it. I know it doesn’t look like it now, but these NY-Bos series have a way of evening out the last 7 years or so. There is no way Bos is that much better than the Yanks. It may be hard to go 10 and 9 or 9 and 10 on the season series from here, but I’ll bet they finish the series no worse than 7-12.

  40. Joekuh - Mr. Sutcliffe, surrender the yogurt. June 11th, 2009 at 11:17 am

Steve, vin did, and said it was just ATROCIOUS!!!!!!

  41. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:18 am

raymagnetic, well DUH, of course, you could throw Kei Igawa out there and he could pitch a gem. Would you be confident in him? I wouldn’t be.

Burnett has pitched terrible lately and Johan is Johan, that’s a game slanted clearly in the Mets’ favor.

  42. Boogie Down Bob June 11th, 2009 at 11:19 am

Youre never as good as you think you are, and youre never as bad as you think you are. Same for the Sox.

There are a lot of ups and downs, highs and lows during a 162 game season.

Despite being 0-7 vs. Boston, we have an opportunity to be tied for the division lead in the AL East approaching the middle of June.

Also, keep in mind that after tonight, we only have 3 games left at Fenway the rest of the year. We will get them 8 times in the Bronx, in the later months when the pennant race has really heated up.

So please, lets stay positive and stay focused. Good things are going to happen.

  43. swingsandmisses June 11th, 2009 at 11:20 am

Santana gave up 4 HR in freaking Citifield last time out. I wouldn’t write off that game so quickly.

  44. Boogie Down Bob June 11th, 2009 at 11:22 am

I loved Pete’s comment last night about it being Oblivious Hypocrite night at Fenway yesterday.

  45. randy l. June 11th, 2009 at 11:22 am

“At some point, Wang also has to take control of his own situation. Its not always Girardi, Cashman, and Eiland’s fault when Wang pitches horribly. It just isn’t.”

getting into starting shape when recovering from an injury is a process.
cashman told him not to do anything to strengthen the foot and lower half over the winter and then did no testing to see if he had enough strength for spring training.
    wang didn’t.

whose fault is this wang’s or cashman’s?

wang finally after rehabbing is starting games and getting up to seven innings when cashman overreacts to a line drive off of joba and knee jerks wang up to sit in the bullpen and lose his starter conditioning.

whose fault is that wang’s or cashman?

wang is reinserted into the rotation . it is with everyone’s understanding that it’s a process of 4-5 starts to bring him back to where a starter would be coming out of spring training. the yankees make the decision to have less of a chance to win those games with wang in there instead of hughes, but make the decision to lose some games to win more later.

they are 1-1 with wang starting. they show panic and hint of removing him at this point after a one run red sox loss. nothing has happened that wasn’t part of the process they set in motion.they panic. they waver in their plan .

whose fault is this wang’s or the yankees?

game three of a five game plan is coming up next.
if the yankees change the plan again because of nothing unusual happening, whose fault is that wang’s or cashman’s, girardi’s, or eiland’s?

i think the answer is pretty clear that there is no plan that is stuck with and thought through with wang so far.

    that’s on the yankees.

wang will be good again. the question is will it be with the yankees or someone else.

i watched the game twice last night. wang had no trouble commanding his four seam fastball. the first inning rbi could have been a double play ball.

swisher whiffed on a catchable flyball for another run. there was a groundbal hit up the middle and a chopper in no man’s land over the mound.

he actually had some good moments. bay and striking out yuokillis for example.
i suggest anyone thinking he was the same as he was in past outings to watch the game again. he was much better last night.

if the yankees don’t start wang in his next start, they are buffoons as i said earlier.

the only thing that i think would be better is figuring a way to get him starting at scranton. short of that happening he needs to make his next start against the nationals.

  46. Boogie Down Bob June 11th, 2009 at 11:27 am

    Randy,

I couldn’t agree more with your post. I read a great article today in the NY Daily News by John Harper who echoes your sentiments.

  47. Joekuh - Mr. Sutcliffe, surrender the yogurt. June 11th, 2009 at 11:29 am

Oh yeah, repost from last thread:

“ SJ, Im gonna have to disagree with you about Wang’s sliders last night. He threw two nasty ones to Bay and Youkilis to strike them out, from the stretch. The important thing about Wang, or any pitcher, is strike 1. once you get that, you control the at-bat. “

Sutcliffe said something interesting last night, that Wang looked like he was shortening his stride like he wanted to get off of his right front as quickly as possible. I know he shortens up his stride to get the sinker to sink, but did anyone notice an EXTRA short stride from him?

  48. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:29 am

I want to believe Wang will be right again but I have no clue really.

For all we know he could be another Chuck Knoblauch, where he just can’t do it.

  49. Bill from NJ June 11th, 2009 at 11:32 am

Can someone copy and paste the Damon Article from NJ.com?

I can’t access it at work.

  50. Joekuh - Mr. Sutcliffe, surrender the yogurt. June 11th, 2009 at 11:34 am

Randy, I just read your 11:22 post. CB and I were saying the same things last night. There WERE improvements from his start against texas. These kneejerk decisions with both Hughes and Wang are gonna hurt the development of both, IMO. They both need to be starting, for different reasons. Having one in the pen helps us now, but may come back to bite us later.

  51. Carl June 11th, 2009 at 11:38 am

The production from top of the Yankees lineup has been a major part of the team’s month-long resurgence. But against the Red Sox thus far, the head of the Yankees order hasn’t come close to matching that output, a fact that was clear to No. 2 hitter Johnny Damon after Wednesday’s 6-5 Yankees loss.

“(The) one, two and four guys on our team haven’t gotten hits so far this series, and we’re the guys who should make this team go,” Damon said. “(Mark) Teixeira is doing his part, but the rest of us need to be better.”

Leadoff man Derek Jeter (0-for-8), Damon (1-for-9), and cleanup hitter Alex Rodriguez (0-for-7) have gone a combined 1-for-24 in the series. The only hit came on Damon’s homer on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the No. 3 hitter Teixeira banged out four hits on Wednesday.

But Teixeira’s efforts alone weren’t enough.

“Unfortunately we are 0-7 against them,” Damon said, as he tried to lend perspective. “But in the American League East, we’re down one game. That’s a positive for us, considering we haven’t beaten them.”

  52. raymagnetic June 11th, 2009 at 11:38 am

“Burnett has pitched terrible lately and Johan is Johan, that’s a game slanted clearly in the Mets’ favor.”

Did you see the last game Johan pitched against the Phillies?

  53. Trevor June 11th, 2009 at 11:40 am

Damon’s right: top of the lineup needs to start hitting. Arod’s been silent since the series in Texas. Jeter looks lost at the plate. And Damon himself hasn’t done much.

  54. Steve B June 11th, 2009 at 11:40 am

“Did you see the last game Johan pitched against the Phillies?”

People love train wrecks. He probably couldn’t take his eyes off of Burnett’s last game.

  55. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:40 am

raymagnetic, of course. But you’re not seriously arguing that we have a better chance to win that game than the Mets do? He had a bad outing. Happens.

  56. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:42 am

Steve B, dude, all of you are not sriously arguing that there’s a bigger chance of Burnett throwing a gem than Santana, are you? That’s just ridiculous.

  57. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:43 am

OF COURSE we have a shot to win! We can win any game. But obviously that game is tilted clearly in the Mets’ favor.

  58. Steve B June 11th, 2009 at 11:46 am

“Steve B, dude, all of you are not sriously arguing that there’s a bigger chance of Burnett throwing a gem than Santana, are you? That’s just ridiculous.”

Dude! No way. I was merely pointing out that if “so and so’s last game” was the measurement by which we are to forecast Sunday’s game, then the Yankees and Burnett are in deep dutch.

  59. Wow I want to beat them June 11th, 2009 at 11:49 am

Steve B, all right dude. Thanks dude. Good going dude.

    Duuuude.

  60. randy l. June 11th, 2009 at 11:52 am

i’m just taking a strong position that the yankees need to show some stomach and stay the course they set in motion .

there’s going to be a lot of debate on the blog and in the media about wang.

the yankees aren’t helping by wavering on every bump in the road.

the fact is they are 1-1 with wang getting about 70 pitches two starts in a row.

he was stronger after the last start and he should be stronger after this one.

  61. trisha - OPPC lifetime member June 11th, 2009 at 10:26 pm

I still think that “Wow I Want to Beat Them” is a troll. Just can’t get over that feeling.
