Fired? Really?
“Listen to music,” I told myself as I got in the car to drive to the Stadium today. “An old Bruce bootleg, Maybe some Johnny Cash. Pop on the Ting Tings. Something calm. Jackson Browne maybe.”
But no, I listened to WFAN. Yikes.
To summarize:
• Joe Girardi should be fired.
• Nick Swisher should be executed at dawn.
• The Yankees would win every game if Joba was in the bullpen.
• Brian Cashman knows nothing about baseball.
• The Yankees have no chance in the postseason.
People, people, people. Yes, they played poorly for three games. But it’s June 12. I’m fairly sure the season is not quite yet over. The Yankees played .800 baseball for a long stretch and that wasn’t going to continue. That’s really not how it works.
The Yankees have lost nine straight against the Red Sox and were 2-4 against the Mets last season. Girardi might want to win a few of these games to keep the wolves at bay. But easy on the “fire the manager” stuff.

If you missed our live video chat today (and shame on you if you did), you can watch the replay there. I was sort of sleepy but fairly coherent.

For the people who want Girardi fired, ask them how it’s Girardi’s fault that he doesn’t have a bullpen.
Execute Swish?
I just wanted him sat down for a game so that he could sit in the dugout with a dunce cap on and writing something on a blackboard 100 times like – “I will not get doubled off on plays right in front of me”
OMG you mean only being 2 games out for first with 100 games left isnt the apocolypse!
were these from the host or the callers?
I thought the season ended yesterday, though.

Pete –
1. I’m amazed you were even functional this morning, after that late night drive in a storm. Speaks to the wonders of youth – and performance enhancing drugs (Red Bull – lol).
2. You listen to Francesa at your own risk.
Agh, who cares? Let the people vent, the frustration is understandable especially when passion is involved. That’s what I say. And if they get too angry, post a picture of a smoking brunette to lull them into a trance.

Well it was prlly Francessca so im saying 50 50
• Nick Swisher should be executed at dawn.
Why should he get to live til dawn???
Haha great post Pete. You’ll never make that mistake again!
Francessa is right; Abreu is a better outfielder than Swisher.
When you hit with RISP, you win…as evidenced by the Red Sux. 3 for 26! 3 for 26! Is that even possible? Yikes. How does K-Long still have a job is beyond me.
20 comeback victories against bad bullpens.
More than Half of the victories the Yankees possess.
Do you really think that will keep up??
The beautiful thing about baseball is that the Law of Averages will always wind up biting you in the arse sooner or later. Chowder heads need to remember that when the Yanks beat up on them in the final months of the season and they wind up on the outside looking in.
“And if they get too angry, post a picture of a smoking brunette to lull them into a trance.”
There are women who also frequent this blog. If you are going to put up pics of hot women, there should also be pics of hot men. First up should be Nick Markakis.
I agree that Girardi is not the problem. The problems are pretty clear:
1) The bullpen is lousy
2) This team turns into jello with RISP
3) 40% of the rotation has been ineffective
Blame the GM, not the manager.

Becasue he cant go up there and hit for them, you can preach and preach all you want but the payers have to execute
Pete, next time please listen to your inner Springsteen.
But don’t post pics of Madonna, the skag.

“Francessa is right; Abreu is a better outfielder than Swisher.”
how soon we forget the lack of range.

he had an arm, but the accuracy wasn’t always there…
Abreu was a better outfielder some of the time.
he was not last year
The whole “bench Swisher” thing I don’t understand. It seems like some people are more interested in sending a message than winning ball games. Benching our hottest hitter in the month of June won’t help us win games. Period.
Swisher has an awesome haircut and plays loud music in the clubhouse
Why should we bench him?
Laura, a commenter did have a picture of their #1 draft pick with his shirt off…
My son walked in when I opened it and thought I was a freak for a second

Swisher look like he was interested in winning ball games the last couple days? Doesn’t much matter that you get on base if you can’t manage to stay there.
They could win a crisp, clean game against the Indians, not against the Sox.
Playoff games for the most part are 2-1, 3-2 games. You are not going to get a million runs. You have to be able to close the door.
“Word is there’s some trade talk going on involving Lastings Milledge. So if he goes, he’ll have two organizations he can rip.”

Thanks for thinking of me, SM.

Agree. Girardi sending a bad message by not sitting him down. Cano from last year all over again.

LOL! Hey, tell him that Mom has needs too.
Fans are funny. Lose a game(or 3 and yes they sucked) and it’s the end of the world
Hank and Hal probably don’t even know that the baseball season has started.

“Word is there’s some trade talk going on involving Lastings Milledge. So if he goes, he’ll have two organizations he can rip.”
e can rip whoever he wants he is garbage
Quite simple really, Swisher is a head case. Yeah we all thought he was great when he was playing 5 miles over his head but when push comes to shove the guy is mental.
CC and Girardi didn’t lose that game last night.
Cashman lost it.
I understand having Marte and Bruney hit the DL isn’t his fault (although letting his 12 million dollar man in Marte blow his arm in the WBC wasn’t exactly wise), but going into a season thinking Veras, Ramirez, Alba-whatever were solid bullpen answers is his fault.
And Veras is still on the roster. And we’re looking to Bret Tomko for big outs.
He had all off season to take fliers on other bullpen arms, but Cashman is only good at hitting home runs. He can land a big fish and he’s excellent at that…but the smaller moves? Where are they?
Now we’re in a position that he’s going to have deplete resources to fix a bullpen that could have been fixed in the off season with a couple of signings/trades.
I know the pen and relievers are not dependable from year to year, but that’s exactly the reason why you go out and look for as many good arms as possible and let the best man win.
People are… morons. Swisher made two dumb plays over the weekend and misplayed a flyball, but he’s still been either our 3rd or 2nd best hitter this season.
Don’t bench Swisher; give him a Twitter time out.
All this series did was
A. Prove once and for all that Boston is better than us.
B. Allow Tampa to pick up 2 games on us for the wild card.
Nothing more. This series didn’t cripple us. Might have knocked us (and the fans) back down to earth, but not crippled us in the standings.
Swish is not a head case, just a bonehead. What is it about Oakland that churns out these types? I still like him though.
Good article on the potential Stephen Strasburg contract:
http://joshqpublic.com/2009/06.....dards-mlb/
According to the logic presented here using somewhat common metrics, Starsburg would be worth 6yr/$50M if he pitched at a level of a Jeff Suppan over the course of the deal.
2 games out is very acceptable considering they have lost 8 games to Boston. Just imagine if they had split those 8 games?? Everyone here would be starting an early celebration for championship #27. Losing stinks, I get that. We all want to watch our team win as many games as possible. The team will be fine once they fine tune some things. Getting Nady will help for sure. Getting Arod going is also important. The important thing is, we have no control over winning and losing. Watch the game and either enjoy watching them win OR be upset they lose. Either way you will wake up tomorrow, and if you don’t, the game the night before didn’t matter anyway.
oops, did I just mistype and call him “STARSburg” ?
Right now – key words “right now” – Boston IS the better team, forget what the record says or how the records are similar.
cheers to 2009 Yankees
both the team and to the poster of the same name
he’s right
PETE I USUALLY AGREE WITH YOU, BUT HERE I DONT…GIRARDI NEEDS TO BE FIRED. ITS THE LITTLE DECISIONS HE MAKES THAT COST YANKEES WINS. AND THEY ADD UP. HES JUST A HORRIBLE COACH. THE ONLY THINGS HE HAS DONE RIGHT, ANY OTHER GUY COULD HAVE DONE RIGHT…BUT EVERYONE KNOWS THAT JOBA SHOULD BE IN THE BULLPEN, HUGHES IN THE ROTATION. WE NEED A BULLPEN AND JOBA IS A BEAST OUT OF THE PEN AND ONLY AN AVERAGE STARTER AND WE HAVE LOST MORE GAMES WITH THE BULLPEN THEN GAMES HE HAS WON AS A STARTER.
Pete, you should take Francesa’s job.
Swisher is a good player, he just loves life he doesnt let things bring him down. He doesnt dwell on things. is there something wrong with being happy in life Ik after reading this board alot I would say yes there is
“Right now – key words “right now” – Boston IS the better team, forget what the record says or how the records are similar.”
——
cant argue that. but using the same rationale, it could be different by tomorrow.
The fact that the Yankees would make the playoffs if things ended today is good enough for me.
As long as they become the better team for a stretch of 11-19 games in October/November, I don’t care who is better on June 12th.
If Nady can field adequately, Swisher is going back to the bench.
The only chance Swisher was keeping his RF job was if Nady was limited to DH. But it looks like Nady will be playing the field. They are making sure he can throw from 150 ft before bringing him up.
Stop with the caps.
It didn’t prove once for all that Boston is better, it proved that every time they’ve payed us they’ve played better. Two very different things.
I don’t understand the “I don’t look at the wild card in June” sentiment.
After last year, you would think some fans would be happy that we’re in a good position to secure ALTEAST the wild card and a playoff spot. Not arrogantly shrug it off like it is below us and inadequate.
Boston Dave, I agree 100%.
Ohh, and for those wanting some good news; Since 1995, 66% of the teams who were in first place on June 1st, went on to the playoffs.

you know who else would be a beast out of the Pen David Price, yet he is still a starter, why? oh becasue HE IS A STARTER, they have freakin randy choate closing for them yet they keep him there. same thing with Joba
“He doesnt dwell on things”
Like baserunning, rules of the game, etc.
Francesa’s right. The worst part? They’re not playing like contenders against the quality teams.
Yankees are going to score 19 tonight. Revenge time.

People are… morons. Swisher made two dumb plays over the weekend and misplayed a flyball, but he’s still been either our 3rd or 2nd best hitter this season.
Just because he has the third most Homers and tied for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for RBI’s hardly makes him our 3rd best hitter. Just pathetic that he has been given that much opportunity.
So if you rank Tex and I guess Jeter as 1 and 2 that would mean he is better than ARod, Damon, Cano, and Posada. I know that’s not what you meant, but please the guy has lossed us more ballgames than he has won since April.
He is way over exposed and he is mental.
TeixMVP – Isn’t that the same thing?
They are the best team in the AL, we’re the 2nd best. If they are able to beat their only real competition head to head, isin’t that what distinguishes the two teams? We may be better against the Washington Nationals, but what does that prove?
Its the lame offense. Great hitting with risp.
Teixeira4MVP is such a homer
stuart a had the best perspective of anyone.
lossed = lost
I guess I’m a bit mental too.
Right now, Swisher is 15th in the American League in OPS. Just in case you think that’s all from walks, he’s 16th in OBP and 17th in SLG. No way some bonehead plays and some poor throws negate all that.
If Nady comes back and the result is Swisher goes to the bench, the Yanks will be worse off. I hope that Girardi doesn’t make that mistake.
Swish made 2 base running mistakes it isnt the first time it isnt the last time it will happen people make mistakes come off your high horse
I think anyone who suggests firing a manager when his team is 2 days removed from first place is nuts.
HOWEVER, I think the team must make the playoffs and do well in the playoffs (at least win one series?) for Girardi to stay.
I think this because I think this may be our last chance to grab Donnie.
Is it just me or does anyone else cringe when someone starts a comment with “Francesa’s right”
If Boston and Philly are the ONLY quality teams in all of major league baseball then sure Francesa’s right.
Ya know … the bridge jumpers, chicken littles, the trolls, the punks and negative nellies do have some humor value. I say we feed them to Sox fans … maybe they’ll convert and therefore eventually disappear.
Not before getting a sarcastic on-line butt-whipping from someone like GB7, and challenging people to meet under the O’Neill banner for a little dance of course.
Ah, the good ol’ days …..

WHO, WHO, WHO is Tex4MVP?
Am I being punked??
fighter A beats fighter B who beats fighter C who beats fighter A
it happens all the time.
the fact the red sox have won 8 straight doesn’t mean they are going to beat everyone else at a higher rate than the yankees.
barring injury, i still think the yankees will have the better regular season record.
i’m also assuming wang is going to come back and be at least a 5.00 era guy for the rest of the season.
Yeah for Girardi to last we need to win the divisional round.
GLove, I respectfully disagree. C’mon, Joe and Cash weren’t playing, the players were. For any one game, it’s the players.
Now, I do agree that I cannot fathom why Jose Veras is still taking up a roster spot. I know, he’s out of options and has a live arm, etc, etc…But there’s no mystery here, he’s not cutting it. Even Joe has given up on him. Ditto Berroa.
Yet, there must be a reason why they’re still both on the roster. I would love to know what it is, but the Yankees don’t see the need to keep me in their loop.
Cash hasn’t stuck around for twenty years, in an organization famous for sacking people, by being a dunce. I have to think he has a reason, and I would love to know what it is.
Boston being the better team now is like candidate A being a couple poibts ahead of candidate B in the polls 4 months before the election.
A lot can and will happen before October. The standings today are like a snapshot; it would be the same if we were 2 games up on them. The only real difference would be in our moods. I bet it will all look brighter a week from now, if not even sooner.
And to carry the election analogy one step further, both of these teams have a good shot to make the runoff after the first round of voting.
Here is a comment that will sure ruffle a few feathers here:
Ozzie Guillen is not in any stretch of the imagination a poor baseball mind, I can now see why he didn’t like Swisher. Apart from a few good games this June his May was absolutely abysmal and the only reason his numbers look good is because of his outrageous April when all the sheep fell in love with him.
I think
“i’m also assuming wang is going to come back and be at least a 5.00 era guy for the rest of the season.”
He’d better pitch better than that. If he pitches to a 5.00 ERA, the job goes to Hughes, IMO.
I have no idea if Wang’ll do well or not, but I hope so.

Ozzie Guillen is a Dbag A hole
“Cash hasn’t stuck around for twenty years, in an organization famous for sacking people, by being a dunce. I have to think he has a reason, and I would love to know what it is.”
I think it was to detail George’s car for the first 15 years or so. Last 5, he’s legitimately been the GM.
btw, guess who leads the team in K’s by a wide margin?
Everyones favorite pet.
Four championships probably helped.
I’m by no means in love w/Cashman, he messes up a lot, but give credit where credit is due.
“Ozzie Guillen is a Dbag A hole”
Of course he is, but that wasn’t the point. The point was it’s often easy to see why he, as a manager, was not particularly enamored with Swisher as a player.
“For the people who want Girardi fired, ask them how it’s Girardi’s fault that he doesn’t have a bullpen.”
It’s not Girardi’s fault, but it certainly is Cashman’s fault. I understand they can’t plan for Bruney’s injury, but the bullpen has no depth.
It’s hard to imagine the thought process coming into the season with Veras, Edwar, Coke, Mo, Bruney, Marte….and believe that’s championship quality.
“Swish made 2 base running mistakes it isnt the first time it isnt the last time it will happen people make mistakes come off your high horse”
i have played baseball all my life and can’t remember ever getting picked off any base on a fly ball.
you learn from little league on to go half way off second base. you’ll score if it’s a hit and you get back if it’s caught.
physical mistakes will happen.
there’s no excuse for mental ones.
jeter could play ten lifetimes and not make that mistake that swisher did.
Swishy’s mistakes more or less, w/help from other factors, lost us the games in Boston.
Well when Coke Edwar, Veras, Marte, and Bruney were all pitching good last year I wouldnt see why he wouldnt have faith in the bullpen
new poast
Apart from a few good games this June his May was absolutely abysmal and the only reason his numbers look good is because of his outrageous April when all the sheep fell in love with him.”
Swisher OPS in:
March/April: 1.144
May: .586
June: 1.358
More accurate to say apart from a lousy May Swisher has been spectacular.
Baa, Baa….
Randy-
Mental mistakes deserve reprimand but just about everybody makes them. Swisher has just been on a roll lately.
DB, I cringe when I look @ the clock and see its time for Francesa’s daily rant. Then people come here and comment on it like its something people want to read.
“I’m by no means in love w/Cashman, he messes up a lot, but give credit where credit is due”
Well, you can start by limiting the credit you give him for the championships. He was not the architect of those dynasty teams and was operating with very limited authority until 2005 or 6. Having gained control of the baseball ops, I think he’s done a pretty good job. Bottom line on Cash is his legacy is going to be based on what the Yankees do going forward rather then when he was George’s errand boy.
If the plays that Swish botched in the early innings lost us the game, we have way more problems then Swisher.
“He’d better pitch better than that. If he pitches to a 5.00 ERA, the job goes to Hughes, IMO.”
hughes ideally is the 6th starter because he can go to triple a and keep starting and be starter ready when someone goes down.
wang can’t go there .
wang may not pitch better than that from now on. he’s between a rock and a hard place in getting his conditioning up to the level it needs to be.
a 5.00 era in the 5th spot would be better than league average.
All that matters is making the playoffs.
From that point on, it’s about who executes and who gets hot.
The Yankees, right now, are “in the playoffs”.
If they can win the division, great. If not, and they can’t make the wildcard, then they don’t deserve to be there.
As long as they make it to the dance, it’s pointless to complain right now.
The Yankees will be a much different team in a few months, as will the Sox and most of the realistic contenders.
Steve B, whether he had a whole lot to do with it or not they cannot be totally disregarded.
This could be a make or break year for the Cash man (I know it’s really one name).
Joe Mauer is making a mockery of the game.
childs play for him…
Randy-
Be sensible. I didn’t agree with you, but saw your point, when you argued that Wang deserved some more starts to show he could get back to his old form.
Now you are arguing if he pitches to a 5.00 ERA, he should continue to start. No offense, but IMO that’s nuts. Hughes will pitch (again, IMO, of course) to a significantly better ERA than that. No way his being available as a sixth starter would offset a continuing worse performance from Wang.
could ya be more of a “drama queen”…”execute Swishalicous”…
“Well when Coke Edwar, Veras, Marte, and Bruney were all pitching good last year I wouldnt see why he wouldnt have faith in the bullpen”
We apparently were watching different games last year.
Coke had 14 IP….small sample size for faith.
Veras had a WHIP of 1.40 w/ 29 BB’s.
Marte had a ERA of 5.40 in 18 IP, again small sample.
Bruney missed 3 months with an injury.
Baseball managers effecting the standings over 162 games is way overrated. Baseball GM’s effecting the standings over 162 games is way underrated.
The Yankees problem is that their GM is a total incompetent. The choices he’s made since took total control in mid 2005 have been disastrous. Girardi is one of those choices but he’s way down the list in importance to the standings. We could list them here but we’d run out of space. Farnsworth, Igawa, Hawkins, AJ or Marte this off season a terrible pitching free agent contract each off season.
Not addressing the bullpen. The horrible drafting and player development system that even now after 4 full years of Cashman having free reign in that area is still no help.
The folly of batting Cano 5th which I’m convinced is being dictated by Cashman.
The panic and the way they’ve screwed up Wang’s return from the foot injury.
The list just goes on and on. If Brian Cashman’s personnel decisions were evaluated on results and ROI he’d be on ESPN with Steve Phillips and Matt Millen.
Yeah, that’s pretty drastic stuff, except for the execute Swisher part. OK, just bench him, but he’s a moron, and it’s appalling that there seem to be no consequences for his boneheaded, brain-locked blunders that keep happening over and over. Saying “I thought the ball would be halfway up the wall” is no excuse. You go halfway, period. If the ball does hit the wall, you score easily. If it gets caught, you can get back. You gain nothing by just running like a fool. Every little leaguer should know this. Why he doesn’t — and why he keeps doing it with no consequence — is beyond me.
I don’t believe Girardi should be fired.
Swisher, whom I really like, has made some key errors over the last week of play.
Yes, we are only in June but where I agree above is that Joba should be in the bullpen, it would shorten our games and prepare for ’11 when Mo will be gone.
hey Wave Your Hat — yes everyone makes mental mistakes as bad and stupid as the ones Swisher makes maybe once or twice IN THEIR CAREERS. How many times have you seen Jeter get doubled off on a routine fly ball in 13 years? How many times did that happen to Bernie Williams in his ENTIRE career? Pick anyone. You see it happen once or twice. With Swisher it happens once or twice a WEEK. He never learns, and apparently Girardi is fine with it. These are mistakes that any well-coached Little Leaguer doesn’t make more than once. Billy Martin would have yanked Swisher out of the game right then and tore him a new one. Maybe that’s what Swisher needs to unclog the glue between his ears. You can try to defend him all you want, but the guy is a Class-A Moron, and he proves it over and over and over. And all those gaudy statistics you coo over? Try taking away the hits where his boneheaded baserunning blunders take him off the bases, because his stats are useless if he keeps erasing himself from the basepaths. The guy went a whole month without getting a hit, now when he gets on he gets doubled off or picked off. And he never learns from his mistakes. He’s a buffoon.
after how many bad starts did they demote mussina to the bullpen in 2007? when he returned to spring training in 2008, his job was in jeopardy. i don’t recall too many people claiming that mussina had “earned” anything.
yet wang has won 46 games in three years and he deserves chance after chance. say he’s coming back from injury. say it’s a process. but please stop with the “he’s earned it” act, folks. it’s tired.
as long as people continue to excuse his performance, the yankees will continue to lose games when he takes the mound. i’m tired of reading quotes from wang about how he “knows what he has to do.” how many times does he have to precede a start with that quote, only to get his lunch handed to him, before somebody realizes that it doesn’t matter if wang claims he knows he has to be better, or can be better. what matters is how he performs on the filed. and he has been absolutely abysmal every single time he has started a game this season. what he has earned, with his performance, is to sit in the bullpen and watch phil hughes take his job.
as for being 0-8 against boston, whatever. they’re two games back. if they lose every single game to boston this year and make the playoffs, that’s fine by me. as long as they’re around in october.
Listening to Francesa is just an exercise in killing brain cells. He is awful, his show is awful, his callers are awful. I love listening to Boomer and Carton in the morning and I make damn sure my radio is back on XM before I leave the car so I don’t have to hear Francesa just for a moment before driving home.
Here’s the difference between Boomer and Carton and Francesa. Carton says something outlandish or crazy, and you take it with a grain of salt because you know he’s kidding.
Francesa, on the other hand, is serious.
I can’t wait for Francesa to be shown the door. It’ll never happen, but the show has lost any sense of “fun” since Mad Dog left.
Pete: Agree with everything in the post…except Jackson Browne. You know traumatic times like these are reserved for melancholy Billy Bragg.
Pete, good job on the live cast…much that has been echoed on the blog, I feel so “in the know”!
Pete,
I love your blog, but your defense of Cashman, the worst GM the Yankees have had in my 36 years on earth, is indefensible. Anyone can sign a player with a blank checkbook.
Not trading for Santana, when the Twins asked for Hilligoss, Melky, Marquez and Kennedy, signing Marte instead of Cruz, not realizing he had a putrid bullpen…the list goes on and on.
If the Yankees ever win again, it will be IN SPITE of Cashman, not because of him.
Trust me, if I was as bad at my job as he is at his, I’d have been fired YEARS ago.
Why did Girardi not play Posada in the last game against Boston? Only he and Texiera had been hitting. Swisher is a horrendous fielder and has cost a lot of runs. Speaking of which, Johnny Damon has a lousy arm and is one of the most awkward left fielders I’ve ever seen. He makes Manny seem like a gold glover. Basically tonight, A-Rod popped up to end the game, and only an unbelievable error won it for the Yankees, but they were congratulating A-Rod as if he hit a walk-off grand slam! Pathetic. I’ve been a Yankee fan for almost 50 years, and I can hardly stand watching them anymore.
Let’s go back to last season & review:
It’s June 12th why worry?
It’s August 15th why worry?
It’s September 5th why worry?
It’s October & we’re out of the play-offs.
You most likely don’t transmit to Yankee’s,,,,But if it will help…..I have watch NY for many year….as I am now Joe Girardi should be fired….He is not a motavater He don’t use the ballpenn good…..They could have won several of the last games But he didn’t do a good job……The Yankees are a better team………They need a good manager
