The Yankees fell again to the Red Sox as CC Sabathia couldn’t hold on.

Sam Borden writes that Subway Series managers Joe Girardi and Jerry Manuel are holding up under fire.

Chien-Ming Wang will get another start. This notebook also has updates on Brian Bruney, a quarterback taken in the draft and A.J. Burnett.

————

Our our live video chat (noon today) is sponsored by Friedrich Air Conditioning. My drive back from Boston last night after the game was sponsored by Red Bull as we plowed through tiredness and assorted bouts of tropical rain on Route 84 and the Merritt Parkway to get home. But home we are.

Thanks to Sweeny and Tyler for the chatter to keep me awake. I hear T-Kep is also on Twitter now, too. So is Sweeny. But you knew that, right. Follow those boys. And don’t forget me, too.

Meanwhile, not only are the Dodgers cruising along without Manny Ramirez, they had Emmanuelle Chriqui of Entourage throw out the first pitch the other day. Would it be too much ask for the Yankees to be more proactive in the Hot Babes Throwing Out First Pitches Department? Would it?

How can they let Joe Torre and Don Mattingly get away with this?

This story hit my heart today since I also was a NTHS student once upon a time

Pete, why you gotta torture us? Come on. Very distracting. Can you just post hot babe pics after tough losses so we can forget about the game?

    THANK YOU.

  9. ditmars1929 June 12th, 2009 at 11:00 am

Hot babes and baseball cannot be beat, but I’d rather see more of Yogi and Ford while we still can.

  10. Steve B June 12th, 2009 at 11:01 am

    Wow! White hot.

    Somebody get Stultus a bucket.

  11. Sandman June 12th, 2009 at 11:02 am

I’m sure there are lots of hot, famous female Yankee fans. Or at least New Yorkers.

I feel the Steinbrenners are not doing enough in this regard. New Stadium, new opportunities. It works for LA, it could work here. Maybe it would help ARod’s bat rise to the occasion at least.

  12. DB June 12th, 2009 at 11:03 am

    Wow, she must work-out.

  13. bottom line June 12th, 2009 at 11:04 am

We keep hearing Yanks haven’t gone 0-8 against Boston to start a season since 1912. But I believe Yanks lost an incredible 17 straight to Boston at Fenway Park in 1973-74.

“1974 September 9-A 6-3 Yankee win over the Red Sox is New York’s first triumph at Fenway Park since July 31, 1973.”

  14. tampayank June 12th, 2009 at 11:08 am

maybe Kate Hudson could throw out a first pitch

  15. m June 12th, 2009 at 11:08 am

move over Alex, if Pete wants hits, he just needs to post pix like this.

    She is lovely, though.

Speaking of Alex, Letterman is in hot water over an Alex joke.

It was in poor taste, and if I were Palin, I’d be upset, too. Teenage daughters, whether they’re 14 or 18, should be off limits.

For some reason that cracked me up. Yes, indeed. She must.

  19. Joe from Long Island June 12th, 2009 at 11:10 am

I was going to write something about AJ and Wang underachieving, and the Yanks’ problems being greatly correlated with that, but, WOW….

  20. Corey June 12th, 2009 at 11:10 am

SO when does the trade for Huston Street take place? lol

  21. Stultus Magnus June 12th, 2009 at 11:12 am

“Teenage daughters, whether they’re 14 or 18, should be off limits.”

Agreed, but Palin started it by dragging them onto the national stage. She could have kept it more private but chose not to. That’s what happens.

But the joke about the “slutty stewardess” was classic.

  22. Brandon ----> Brandon 4 Cena 0 June 12th, 2009 at 11:12 am

Anyone know where Marte is? We are hearing about Nady and Bruney but no Marte.
No trades for another couple of weeks until Bruney is back.

  24. m June 12th, 2009 at 11:15 am

    Stultus,

I found the joke hilarious (because it was more a jab at Alex!), and the Palins are overreacting.

But as a mother, I found it very distasteful.

    No excuses.

I’m sure the Tonight Show would take it back if they could.

And the Palins are hardly the first to use their kids to campaign.

  25. Steve B June 12th, 2009 at 11:15 am

    Letterman’s still alive?

This is nothing. He’d be in REAL trouble if he made a similar crack about the Obama daughters.

  26. kill.schill(ing) June 12th, 2009 at 11:15 am

Is that Simone? Agreed. My heart flutters every episode in which she registers an appearance.

  27. Al from BK June 12th, 2009 at 11:17 am

Gorgeous girl, I saw her in “Don’t mess with the Zohan” funny movie too :)

  28. m June 12th, 2009 at 11:18 am

    Ah, Steve B.

Forgot to give you huge props for that old-timers joke the other night.

    Great one.

Even in my own family, I have to explain who mr. ed is. Green Acres and Gilligan’s Island, too.

  29. m June 12th, 2009 at 11:19 am

That’s the girl from Zohan? She was very cute.

And she’s better looking than that megan fox girl.

I realize the live video chat is sponsored by Frederick Air Conditioning…

but if you’re going to post it in every single thread you write, why don’t you just say it’s the Frederich LoHud Yankees Blog?

  31. Stultus Magnus June 12th, 2009 at 11:25 am

“And the Palins are hardly the first to use their kids to campaign.”

Then the Palins aren’t the first to be the butt of a joke. They certainly were ready to reap the benefits of putting their daughters on stage. Bristol gets knocked up by some idiot and is not a spokeswoman for abstinence.

Oh, and if Obama’s daughters were older and were getting knocked up by clowns, the jokes would be there.

  32. Stultus Magnus June 12th, 2009 at 11:25 am

    not = now

  33. Boogie Down Bob June 12th, 2009 at 11:25 am

One of George Steinbrenner’s favorite quotes which I found quite appropriate for all of us Yankee fans:

“I am wounded but I am not slain. I shall lay me down and bleed a while, then I shall rise and fight again.”

Stay positive, stay focused, and keep fighting. We’re going to get those sons of bitches from Boston when it counts.

  34. wtgpete June 12th, 2009 at 11:29 am

    Big Pete at 10:24pm:
That at-bat by Pedroia may have turned the game as he saw 10 pitches and essentially wore CC out. Girardi should have pulled him then.

    Big Pete at 12:29am:
[Girardi] said he preferred using Sabathia as opposed to anybody else. Can’t blame him for that. A worn down Sabathia is better than anybody in that bullpen outside of Rivera.

Gotta hand it to you, Big Pete… You were right… One of those times. Only took you two hours to get over that fence.

  35. Ed H. June 12th, 2009 at 11:29 am

I agree that Letterman was way out of line with the Arod/Palin joke. He should have known better.

I also agree that the Yanks should make an effort to find a deserving Broadway actress or two to throw out a first pitch now and then. Or, at least they could have an actress escort one of their old timers to the mound when they throw out the pitch. I’m certain that Whitey would have no objections.

  36. pat June 12th, 2009 at 11:29 am

    Stultus

Very doubtful. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be picketing outside the theater.

Letterman worked on the premise that Palin, Rodriguez and Spitzer are safe to be the butt of jokes.

  37. Brandon ----> Brandon 4 Cena 0 June 12th, 2009 at 11:29 am

And ofcourse Christian Garcia GETS HURT AGAIN !

    That little b…..

  38. Gloria June 12th, 2009 at 11:29 am

Pete’s strategy seems like a lot better entertainment than cotton-eyed joe & YMCA. Yankee management should get on that.

Pete managed to sneak his real point by while the drooling took over.

Where did the term Sneaky Pete come from anyway? Anybody know?

  42. Bull.... June 12th, 2009 at 11:31 am

Letterman’s joke referenced the 14 year old daughter. It wasn’t funny, as Letterman rarely is anyway, but how can anyone really laugh at a 14 year old girl getting raped?

Tasteless as usual, but with some people politics get in the way of common sense.

  43. Steve B June 12th, 2009 at 11:32 am

    Mel:

    Thanks. Had fun with that.

I know what you mean. You should hear me trying to sell my kids on the idea that Letterman was once funny and relevant.

  46. Boogie Down Bob June 12th, 2009 at 11:34 am

    Ed,

As do I. Someone must have muzzled Hank, I’m shocked we haven’t gotten a good quote or sound bite out of him yet

  47. m June 12th, 2009 at 11:34 am

Doesn’t matter if it was the Kennedys or Obamas, the joke was still bad.

  48. Steve B June 12th, 2009 at 11:35 am

“And ofcourse Christian Garcia GETS HURT AGAIN !”

That sucks………..but Montero had his best game with the Thunder last night.

  49. wtgpete June 12th, 2009 at 11:35 am

Letterman’s joke did not reference the 14-year-old… It referenced the white trash high school whore who got pregnant outside of wedlock.

That’s some family values the palin’s have working for them… Maybe clean up your own back yard before you put so much attention on what the late night comic is saying.

If they are that easily distracted, one has to wonder what was holding their attention when their daughter got knocked up.

  50. Joe from Long Island June 12th, 2009 at 11:38 am

Brandon, is Garcia on the DL again? Boy, some guys, like Horne, Sanchez, and Garcia, just can’t seem to get out of their own way.

On the minor league note…Ransom seems to be hitting very well at Scranton. How long before he supplants Berroa on the roster? Similarly, Sergio Mitre seemed to do well in his start, coming off his suspension. I realize it’s only one start, but wouldn’t he be a better option than Jose Veras? Wouldn’t anybody (except maybe Edwar, who’s getting hit at AAA.)

Given the impetus to upgrade in the pen, seems like Mitre, and later Bruney, need to be assessed, so Cash can decide sooner than later to deal.

  51. Stultus Magnus June 12th, 2009 at 11:38 am

“Very doubtful. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be picketing outside the theater.”

Hey, I didn’t say there wouldn’t be a backlash, I’m saying comedians look for the joke and pounce. They’ll joke about anybody, anytime. And, really, Al Sharpton? The guy has no credibility and is probably one of the most corrupt people in NYC. If he’s picketing, he’s lining his pockets somehow. I don’t trust that guy.

Anyway, let’s get back to talking about hot babes. Yes, get rid of cotton-eyed joe and bring in a Lily Marlene act. Green Beret might like that joke.

  52. dennis-costanza June 12th, 2009 at 11:38 am

I will throw something out there to hopefully steer away the politcs. Will winning the AL Central this year be like getting the Perfect Attendance Award in Junior High?

That division is already low on talent….What it will be like after the trade deadline?

    -dennis

  53. Trevor June 12th, 2009 at 11:39 am

Yankees don’t play an AL team until the 30th. Some bad NL teams coming up the next 12 games. Go 9-3 minimum.

  54. m June 12th, 2009 at 11:39 am

That’s what Letterman said, but A-rod would be some kind of superman if he could knock up some girl that wasn’t even at the game during the 7th inning stretch.

The 14 yr. old was there, the 18 yr. old was not.

Sorry, I brought it up. Geez.

  55. pat June 12th, 2009 at 11:40 am

    wtgpete

I take it you never did anything your parents didn’t know you were doing or wouldn’t have approved of.

How lucky for them and how odd of you.

  56. Ed H. June 12th, 2009 at 11:41 am

    Pete,

Why is this blog running an ad for Red Sox merchandise on this post? “Take 10% off your entire order at redsox.com.” Friedrich Air Conditioning I can take. Really. I get it that we get this great blog for free and that the J-N uses advertising to support the site and the paper. But please tell your bosses that running a color ad for Arch Enemy apparel the morning after they sweep three games from us to knock us out of first place just ads insult to injury. Very poor taste. Really!

  57. wtgpete June 12th, 2009 at 11:44 am

    Pat,

If you’re going to preach to everybody else about family values and how they should live their lives, best to make sure your daughter isn’t getting knocked up in the back of some car while you’re doing it.

  58. m June 12th, 2009 at 11:45 am

Pretty sure it was that beat up Chevy pick up.

Hey, Christina25, dennis costanza, and ray (red sox fan), please buy your red sox gear via LoHud. It would really help out Pete!

  59. Boston Dave (in Pittsburgh, PA) - OPPC member June 12th, 2009 at 12:00 pm

“It referenced the white trash high school whore who got pregnant outside of wedlock.

That’s some family values the palin’s have working for them…”

    ——–

oh please. Who cares if her daughter is pregnant? It happens all the time. Now she is responsible for a child. If she didn’t want to have it, that’s her problem to deal with and she should have thought about it beforehand. She didn’t and now she is blessed with a child to care for.

Letterman didn’t say anything wrong. Sarah Palin’s daughter didn’t do anything wrong.

  60. pat June 12th, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Where did I say anything about family values?

  61. Vince (peaks and valleys) June 12th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Finally ….. the Yankees are back in a real city. A Subway Series is intense but civil unlike those wannabes 200 miles north of here.

  62. Dogu June 12th, 2009 at 12:13 pm

The Yankees are more interested in pushing right-wing politics at the stadium.

  63. Ron June 12th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

I like Letterman, and Palin is an idiot, but Letterman was a little out of line with the joke, especially when it could be construed that he was referring to the 14 year old daughter who attended the game. Of course Palin really loves this because she actually thinks she will be the President someday and she loves the publicity, and she will continue to use her family as campaign props.

As for Pete’s column about Manuel & Girardi, I had to laugh when Sheffield said that a good manager is someone who the players like to play for. In other words, that chronic malcontent wants the manager to kiss his rear end and otherwise leave him alone. When that clown finally gets released for good, baseball will be the better for it.

And Charlie Manuel said that both Jerry Manuel and Girardi are both doing a good job.

Memo to C. Manuel – so losing 8 in a row to the Bosox for the first time in 100 years is doing a good job, huh ? The only thing Girardi has accomplished as Yankee manager is banning ice cream from the clubhouse. Just great.

  64. Count of MOntefusco June 12th, 2009 at 12:27 pm

When you build a career on imposing your religious beliefs and so-called morals on other people; actively campaigning against sex education; and promoting abstinence as the ONLY safe sex option — AND you parade your children across the dais for your national introduction — you can BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR you’ve got it coming when an out-of-wedlock teen pregnancy lands on your doorstep.

If the Palins — like the Bill Bennetts (gambling), Rush Limbaughs (drugs) and Newt Gingriches (adultery) of the world — want people to back off, they should keep their so-called “values” and high-minded morality policing behind closed doors and out of the public square.

Until then, what comes around goes around.

    Apologies/end rant

    Go Yanks
