Bruney stands by comments

Brian Bruney was back at the Stadium by the time the game finished. Asked about his attack on Francisco Rodriguez, he did not back off.

“I stand by what I said. But I’m not going to start a media war with K-Rod,” he said. “I don’t know him, he’s probably a good dude. If he says he doesn’t know me, he doesn’t know me. I learned to play the game a different way.”

I’m still not sure why all this happened. But speaking on behalf of New York baseball writers, we welcome all such stories, especially on an otherwise nondescript day.

Good for Bruney. He was absolutely correct in his assessment of K-Rod. I applaud Brian Bruney’s courage and look forward to him returning to his dominant self on Tuesday.

  2. Mike June 13th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

    And K-Rod officially shut Bruney’s fat mouth…

Says Bruney is a “nobody who is always hurt”, to “say that stuff to my face, instead of the media” and should “shut his mouth”.

Asked if he was some guy from AA….classic.

  3. Uniform June 13th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Andy Pettitte has recorded 1 quality start in his last 8 starts.

    He is toast.

  4. big baby June 13th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

bruney learned to play the game a different way. by getting hurt all the time and rehabbing in the minors.

bruney’s such a classy guy that he attacks k-rod in the media.

seriously, stfu bruney. what an idiot.

  5. Mike June 13th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Any Yankee fan that has a problem with ANY part of K-Rod is a damn hypocrite…hes no different than Joba.

  6. Scott June 13th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

    Mike,

K-Rod is right. Let Bruney prove stay healthy for a couple of weeks for a change before he starts attacking other guys.

  7. Jerry June 13th, 2009 at 8:12 pm

Any Yankee fan that does not defend Bruney over that pretentious little rat K-Rod is a traitor. Probably a Met or Red Sox fan in disguise. I am a Yankee for life and will always defend Yankee players.

  8. Frase June 13th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

K Rod has a point though. What has Brian Bruney ever done in the big leagues ?

  9. Wait till they come to OUR house June 13th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

    Whatever.

  10. Johnny June 13th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

If this was Posada who said it… I applaud him.

Who the hell is Brian Bruney though? A fringe relief pitcher who is never healthy?

It’s like when Josh Towers called out A-Rod a couple years ago. Who the hell is Josh Towers?

  11. Cal June 13th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Seriously Bruney needs to not be worrying about Fransisco Rodriguez and what he does on the field, instead Bruney should be more concerned about remaining healthy and helping the Yankees to win games with that moshpit disaster we call a bullpen.

I could care less about Bruney and Rodriguez and more interested in Bruney actually pitching. Less talking more pitching should be his motto.

  12. JR June 13th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

K-Rod celebrates the final out. Joba carries on that way in the second inning

  13. JR June 13th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

And Josh Towers is now pitching for Scranton

  14. Mike June 13th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

    Jerry-

    Stop being an apologist…
Bruney sounds like a guy who is reading his own press that is labeling him as the savior of the Yankee pitching staff…\

    As SI’s Jon Heyman says…
“People on the DL should be seen and not heard”

  15. bronxboy June 13th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

I am a Yankee fan but honestly the yankees should be staring at a sweep going into tomorrow and this is against one of the weakest Met teams they have ever had. The starting pitching outside of CC is awful with Petitte leading the charge.
    The bullpen has been weak
Hitting with RISP is awful. Without the last minute heroic comeback they`d be under 500
The team is underachieving, and the team “on paper” has too much talent to play like this. I am so tired of hearing how yet another AAA pitcher “had great stuff”

  16. Wait till they come to OUR house June 13th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

The Mets are not awful. They have some great players and if we win tomorrow I’m happy.

LOSE tomorrow is a different story.

  17. Jerry June 13th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

    Mike-

Stop being a traitor! It seems like I’m one of the few true Yankee fans here. Some of you are throwing Bruney under the bus and actually agreeing with K-Rod, the enemy! Who is Brian Bruney? He’s one of the best bullpen arms we have and we need him to win the World Series! That’s who Brian Bruney is!

  18. jennifer June 13th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Nice to see all the Met fans that decided to inhabit the yankee blog.

  19. Cal June 13th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

    “As SI’s Jon Heyman says…
“People on the DL should be seen and not heard”

Tell me about it, especially when you don’t even have a verifiable injury to speak of and will in all likelihood end up right back on the DL after another appearance.

I don’t get why Bruney felt the need to run his mouth, he couldn’t carry Rodriguez’s jocks around the club house. Did I miss something. What has Bruney accomplished to be calling out guys. If he is that upset then start by telling his own teamate Joba to quit his antics as well.

I just don’t get it. I’m a diehard Yankee fan but when guys run their mouth and haven’t done jack in this league you have to wonder. Just like he went on and on about the umpires and the delayed Homerun call a few weeks back.

It seems Bruney thinks he is a rising star or something. He needs to be reminded he hasn’t done jack squat in his career. Do it on the field and then mouth off guy.

  20. RalphieD (OPPC all day) June 13th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

wow guys…bruney was asked about last nights game and he gave it..he doesnt like krod..big deal…you know how many players dont like the yankees…move on

  21. Wait till they come to OUR house June 13th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Bruney can say what he wants. Personally I agree. I really don’t care what these overpaid athletes have to say to each other. It’s their business, not mine.

  22. Cal June 13th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

“Stop being a traitor! It seems like I’m one of the few true Yankee fans here. Some of you are throwing Bruney under the bus and actually agreeing with K-Rod, the enemy! Who is Brian Bruney? That doesn’t imply we have to walk around with blinders, what is it to Bruney if K-Rod jumps around like a circus act after a save, let Bruney start actually pitching and he can be free to casually walk off the mound after doing his job. As of right now he isn’t though. I have heard more of Bruney’s mouth than actually seeing him pitch this season. Wish it was the reverse.

  23. Jimmy June 13th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

    “move on”

Newsflash, that was the sole topic of the post you’re commenting on.

  24. RhapsodyInBlue June 13th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

    Mike

K-Rod’s mouth is fatter then Bruney’s.

  25. Yankee Trader June 13th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

    Pettitte is losing because:
He can’t pitch inside to lefties.
He doesn’t get the calls on the corners.
He’s lost some velocity, about 3 mph.
He’s no longer dominant in Yankee stadium.
He’s gets more frustrated than ever.
He won’t tell you if he’s hurt.
Posada does a very poor job at framing pitches.

As far as Bruney is concerned, he came from obscurity, is almost always injured while collecting a paycheck, and isn’t worthy of getting quoted by the press. Should be plenty more to talk about.

  26. Wait till they come to OUR house June 13th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Pettite is wining quite a bit actually.

He’s having trouble w/quality starts, but as it is I like him as a number five starter.

  27. Papa Smurf June 13th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Good for Brian Bruney he gave an honest answer. He also said in the past that he did not like Joba’s fistpump.

Also Bruney is right about what he said about K-Rod. He is way over the top. But not many are as classy as Mariano Rivera.

And who is Jon Heyman to talk about Bruney for ripping K-Rod. Bruney has a right to say whatever he wants similar to Heyman has a right to write whatever he wants. But Heyman is a fraud he get on his knee’s for K-Rod and rips Papplebon and Joba for there antics.

  28. Cal June 13th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

“As far as Bruney is concerned, he came from obscurity, is almost always injured while collecting a paycheck, and isn’t worthy of getting quoted by the press. Should be plenty more to talk about.”

Exactly when the press need Brian Bruney for material you know its reached a new low for coverage. Which is why I wished Bruney had kept his mouth shut and actually, hopefully can come back and make more than 1 appearance before running back to the DL to sit in the dugout eating sunflower seeds.

I could understand if Bruney was say Rivera and mentioned something about another teams closer, but he isn’t carrying that cache.

  29. Betsy June 13th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

    Whatever, Bruney.

Joel Sherman is a loser – really, blaming Posada for Yankees bad play is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard come from his typewriter and that’s saying a lot. Jorge is the scapegoat for a lot of things – and I don’t buy any of it. It’s not his fault that the pitchers have all spit the bit – they’re professionals, they are the ones making the pitches. They’d better darn well start executing them better. It’s not his fault that Swisher plays with his head up his behind all the time, that 90% of the lineup is in a slump and that my company softball team has a better pen. Jorge is not perfect – like every other ballplayer. What else is new? He’s got his flaws – like every other ballplayer. I still want him in this lineup 8 days a week.

As to the team – wow. Their SP is a mess – Andy has been bad for quite awhile now, there is no denying that. I don’t think he’s going to all of a sudden turn it around. AJ is up and down, Joba is up and down and Wang is Wang. CC is holding the staff together by a thread. The pen is unbelievably bad….. The offense? I don’t care when they get hot again – when they get hot, they are still going to do what they always do: bludgeon bad teams to death, take innings off at a time, try to come back late, not move runners over. That will really do them a world of good should they make the playoffs. Even if they somehow get good pitching, they’d probably lose 2-1 instead of 6-1. Nice way to bounce back after a terrible series in Boston….

  30. Wait till they come to OUR house June 13th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Um Betsy, we didn’t lose this series yet you know.

  31. Htman213 June 13th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Sounds like a shot at Joba.

  32. m June 13th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Bruney’s too big for his britches. Well, actually his britches are too big for him, but he still needs to be humble and worry about getting back on the field.

Talking trash about other players isn’t the Yankee way.

Just because you’re right doesn’t mean you can say it out loud.

  33. Donnie - Will Meet Carlos Beltran Under the O'Neill Banner June 13th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

“Any Yankee fan that has a problem with ANY part of K-Rod is a damn hypocrite…hes no different than Joba.”

Incorrect. Joba’s fist pump is a “one and done” show of excited emotion. K-Rod’s is what amounts to a ritualistic, preconceived interpretive dance. Two completely different things.

I have no problem with the fist pump, from Joba or any other pitcher. Joba does it as he’s walking off the field, or does it and them IMMEDIATELY walks off. K-Rod makes a show out of doing it in the center of the field. I find THAT to be classless. I like guys to show emotion. I do not like guys to turn the game in to a contest to see who can come up with the most elaborate celebration ritual.

  34. Cal June 13th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

“Um Betsy, we didn’t lose this series yet you know.”

Do you honestly think that this team with wild oats Burnett on the mound and a hit or miss offense, that got shut down by a journeyman scrub today, even when said scrub couldn’t throw first pitch strikes consistently is going to beat Johan Santana.

    You are a brave man.

  35. Wait till they come to OUR house June 13th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

    Cal, uh, yeah?

  36. Hurrybacknady! June 13th, 2009 at 8:32 pm

“Any Yankee fan that has a problem with ANY part of K-Rod is a damn hypocrite…hes no different than Joba”

Joba just pumps his fists and yells, which to me he shouldn’t be doing in early innings however K-rod acts like a monkey on the mound which looks more idiotic than anything. Even more idiotic than Papelscum

  37. Pat M. June 13th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Yanks looked flat today…A good performance vs. Santana would get them back on track……AJ needs to step up tomorrow and be the stopper that this rotation needs right now…..You’re as good as your next starting pitcher…..

  38. m June 13th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

We don’t like it when other players (and there’ve been quite a few) talk about Joba. So, I say that Bruney should keep these types of opinions to himself. They do no one good and is only bulletin board material.

  39. Pat M. June 13th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

K-Rod has been disliked throughout the AL since he came up in 02….Alex had issues with him and his bs….Players on the Angels didn’t care for him and his antics…Bush league….

  40. Sarah June 13th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

Have I missed something? The last few games Joba has pitched, he hasn’t done a fist pump that I have seen. The last emotion he showed was in the game where he came off the mound and made a Jeter-like catch full out of a pop up.

There is a light hint of dissatifaction of Joba on this board. Let’s let it go. Other than CC, none of the pitchers are up to par. I know this, when Molina catches Joba, he pitches well. CC prefers Cervelli. So what does that say.

  41. Sarah June 13th, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Forgot this comment: It seems like management might have spoken to Joba about his fist pumps and the lion’s roar he gave to the opposing team after the double play. I have forgotten which team it was but it was the game that he caught the pop up and threw to 2nd for the double play.

He has been emotionless, IMO, since then. Who knows – he may thrive off that emotion. Gad, baseball is complicated.

  42. bronxboy June 13th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

    who cares about K rod
    Yanks are still under performing

  43. Yank 157r June 14th, 2009 at 11:06 am

Since when do you have to be a super star to speak to the press??? K-rod has acted like an idiot since he came up!!!
He speaks to the press in retaliation and that’s fine!!! He put the guys on base before the pop-up was dropped!!!( if that happened early in the game, nobody even remembers ) Should have waited a little longer before he pointed to the sky!!! What’s with all the pointing for asnyway??? Do they think God cares whether they got a save, a single, double, triple, or a home run!!! I have my doubts!!!
