K-Rod fires back at Bruney

Peter Abraham
June
13

Francisco Rodriguez didn’t say much before the game when he heard about Brian Bruney’s comments. But he was a little more opinionated afterward.

“He needs to keep his mouth shut and do his job,” Rodriguez said. “If he was a big guy, I’d probably pay attention. If he was somebody big like Mariano, I’d respect that. But if I don’t know who he is, I just don’t listen.”

UPDATE, 8:59 p.m.: Now we have fighting words from K-Rod:

“Instead of sending a message through the paper, next time when he sees me at Citi Field come up to me and say it to my face. Don’t be sending a message through the media. I don’t even know who that guy is. Somewhere in Double-A? I believe he hasn’t even pitched one full season. He’s always been on the DL. That’s all I know right now.”

    Thats comical

if only mike ashmore took the day off :)

Bruney, be quiet, geez the guy has a big mouth. Once the mediots asked him about it again, he should have just shut up. This is just about the stupidest story in the world.

Joel Sherman is a loser – really, blaming Posada for Yankees bad play is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard come from his typewriter and that’s saying a lot. Jorge is the scapegoat for a lot of things – and I don’t buy any of it. It’s not his fault that the pitchers have all spit the bit – they’re professionals, they are the ones making the pitches. They’d better darn well start executing them better. It’s not his fault that Swisher plays with his head up his behind all the time, that 90% of the lineup is in a slump and that my company softball team has a better pen. Jorge is not perfect – like every other ballplayer. What else is new? He’s got his flaws – like every other ballplayer. I still want him in this lineup 8 days a week.

As to the team – wow. Their SP is a mess – Andy has been bad for quite awhile now, there is no denying that. I don’t think he’s going to all of a sudden turn it around. AJ is up and down, Joba is up and down and Wang is Wang. CC is holding the staff together by a thread. The pen is unbelievably bad….. The offense? I don’t care when they get hot again – when they get hot, they are still going to do what they always do: bludgeon bad teams to death, take innings off at a time, try to come back late, not move runners over. That will really do them a world of good should they make the playoffs. Even if they somehow get good pitching, they’d probably lose 2-1 instead of 6-1. Nice way to bounce back after a terrible series in Boston….

  5. Wait till they come to OUR house

    Who cares.

If thse overpaid athletes want a media war, fine.

  6. weiney heineys

no + body+ cares= nobody cares…what a dumb story , pete go home and get some rest bro

  7. Wait till they come to OUR house

Betsy, as I said last thread, the series has not been lost yet.

I think we win tomorrrow. As much as I had a bad feeling about today, I feel good about tomorrow. Don’t know why.

  8. YankeeJosh

K-Rod, imo should have shown some leadership and taken his share of the blame for yesterday’s Mets loss. Yes, Castillo dropped the ball. But if there hadn’t been runners on, the game would have already been over, or if Castillo made an error, it wouldn’t have cost the team. K-Rod put the Mets in a position to lose yesterday, and something flukey happened. Would have been nice if he more publicly admitted that and didn’t let Castillo take the fall alone.

  9. RS

What’s up with the Red Sox/Phillies game? Seems like they’ve had a pretty long rain delay.

Actually, I hope it rains hard for three straight hours and they have to cancel the game.

  10. Hurrybacknady!

    Joel Sherman,

Thats ridiculous. You’d think Posada would get more respect than that. Apparently, its not the pitchers fault. Everything is Posada. Now how much you want to bet that once Cervelli starts slumping people will blame him too. Unbelievable. Andy did poorly because he didn’t execute right and had a hard time getting his cutter right. Not saying posada isn’t ever at fault, but don’t be stupid as to blame a catcher for everything.

  11. Wait till they come to OUR house

RS, I really hope so too.

That would be a massively huge break.

  12. Papa Smurf

K-Rod acts like a clown after he gets a save he makes Papplebon celebrations seem normal. It was awesome seeing him raise his hands and getting ready for his celebration and then watching him see Castillo drop the ball was priceless.

Bruney will be the future closer for the yanks once Mo retires and Bruney will be lights out and carry himself like a professional.

  13. Johnny

    LOL wow

Bruney got owned by K-Rod. As Heyman says…. players on the DL (and in Bruney’s case, always on the DL) need to be seen, not heard.

  14. John

Bruney is 100% is the right here. He is a true yankee and an outstanding citizen. K-Rod is a little rat who thinks he’s better than he really is.

    Bruney > K-Rod

  15. Papa Smurf

Posada cant call a game it is obvious look at the team’s ERA when Posada is the catcher compared to Cervelli, it is almost a 2 run difference. Joe Girardi should just call the game from the bench whenever Posada is catching. Girardi was a great game caller.

  16. Wait till they come to OUR house

No way Bruney becomes our closer.

If I had to guess, I’d say Melancon.

We better fins somebody because every team that has lost a reliable closer this year has gotten substantially worse (2 examples-LA, Philly. Yes, Philly is worse than they were last year).

  17. Mike CA

As long as Joba is on our team, any comment criticizing someone else for showing emotion looks hypocritical.

And no, I don’t care if K-Rod is “10x worse”, that is all up to the individual’s interpretation. Showing emotion is showing emotion.

  18. m

lol. Good for K-rod. What has Bruney accomplished in his career? Nothing. He needs to shut up and pitch. Not open his trap and provide bulletin board material.

  19. jennifer

Bruney’s always on the dl? really? that is news to me. He tried to come back too soon that is why he ended up back on the dl. And he had a lisfranc injury. I guess that is his fault too.

Listen K-rod is universally disliked around MLB. Finally someone had the guts to stand up and say something.

  20. Edwards

Philly puts Lidge on the DL and they get better with Madson.

If Papelbon goes down, Boston has like 5 options to go to.

If Mariano goes down…. say hello to Every Day Phil Coke!

  21. Papa Smurf

I hope that clown K-Rod blows out his arm this year if he wants to rip a player for being hurt.

Lights out Bruney will be back tuesday!

  22. Wait till they come to OUR house

Posada has caught bad games this year.

But over his career he’s caught some great pitching staffs. I am totally convinced that it is a 100% coincidence that the numbers w/Posada are worse than with other pitchers.

  23. AZ Four

Betsy – that is an excellent post. Everyone read that if you want an objective account of the team.

  24. Mike

    Jennifer?

    “Universally disliked?”

Coming from an insider, like yourself, I assume?

  25. you gotta have faith (i love cisco!)

    lol so stupid.
i hope the yanks win tomorrow and stop the slide of losing 2 series in a row! santana in his last few starts has been far from unhittable, and hes vulnerable to homers. that should be to our advantage esp in this park.

  26. Hurrybacknady!

Thats because Cervelli is new, thats why people like him. As soon as he starts slumping, people will get on him too. Even if Posada has slowed down, I’d like to see some people show the guy some respect. He is a leader on that team after all.

  27. Dr. Cox

“If Mariano goes down…. say hello to Every Day Phil Coke!”

Wrong. God almighty and heaven FORBID, that Mo goes down….we will see Joba as the closer.

  28. Mike

    Oh, and Jennifer..

“Had the guts to stand up and say something?”

    Yeah, through the media…what a big man…

  29. John

LOL at thinking this is Posada’s fault! He’s been the Yankees catcher for 13 years and all of a sudden he’s forgotten how to call a game. LOL! LOL! LOL! Joba was all over the place and it’s Posada’s fault? Who caught that game Joba went 8 vs. Cleveland and people called it the best game Joba ever pitched? Oh yeah, Posada. Wang’s problems are his own, don’t matter who’s catching. Andy and Posada have been working together for about a decade, but suddenly they can’t work together. LOL! What a joke.

  30. Danny

The poor play started in the home Texas series.

We actually played some of our best baseball in the Cleveland series. Won a nice crisp 3-1 game to open the series. CC dominated the 2nd game. We rallied in the 3rd game against Pavano but lost, and Joba pitched 8 innings in the finale.

    Seems like ages ago though

  31. Wait till they come to OUR house

    Dr. Cox, you’re right.

    Would Aceves start then?

  32. Donnie - Will Meet Carlos Beltran Under the O'Neill Banner

If he’s not listening, then why does Bruney needs to keep his mouth shut?

    Correct answer:

“Man, I dunno. Guys talk. I go out and play my game. I can’t control what anyone else thinks of me, so I’m not gonna try. I’m sorry if I offended him, that’s never been my intent. If he’s really got a problem, though, he should bring it to the field. If he doesn’t like what I do, then pitch so that we don’t have a lead, and I don’t get in a game. Otherwise, I am who I am, and I’m not changing that because he, or anyone else, doesn’t like it.”

I hate the guy. A lot. I hate his self-congratulatory antics, and the way he carries himself on the field. But if he’s gonna do it, he should stand behind it, and not tell someone else to “shut up”.

And in case he hadn’t noticed, Bruney’s ERA is lower than Mo’s, as is his WHIP. I’m not suggesting that Bruney is better than Mariano. Not by a long shot. But Bruney is an important part of our bullpen, and has pitched VERY well this year, when he pitched. To say he’s “not someone big” just because it isn’t, and never will be, historically great, is just silly. The bottom line is, K-Rod made it clear that he DOES care what he said. If he really didn’t, he would have given a different response.

  33. Yankee Trader

Someone educate me. Why doesn’t Posada set up and frame the pitch until the pitcher starts his windup? He’s always moving while the pither begins throwing.

  34. Zolio

I may be wrong, but has any other player criticized K-Rod publicly over the years?

Usually, you keep that stuff to yourself.

  35. Papa Smurf

Jorge Posada: 6.46 era (2nd highest out of any everyday catcher)
    Francisco Cervelli: 4.45 era
    Jose Molina: 3.66 era
    Kevin Cash: 3.49 era

  36. YankeeJosh

    Papa Smurf,

You can’t look at Catcher’s ERA. Cervelli is catching Sabathia, the Yankees BEST starter. His Catcher’s ERA should be tons better. He’s also the back-up. so he has time to focus on his one game, whereas Posada has to catch near everyday.

I’m not saying Posada is a great game caller, but you can’t go just on Catcher’s ERA.

  37. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC

I’m done with this Bruney vs. K-Rod feud. Have em duke it out under the O’Neill banner. Winner gets a pie

Moving on, AJ tomorrow. Disaster week seemed to have started with his pitiful performance in Boston. Would be nice to see him bring his A game tomorrow. Hopefully he does.

  38. Htman213

    “Who is Karim Garcia?”

    LOL

  39. Htman213

    Bruney > K-Rod

    WOW!!!!

  40. Retire 21

K-Rod won a world series ring, has the season record for saves, currently is the best closer in baseball, and is on pace to break every reliever record if he stays healthy.

The guy is a clown on the mound, but you have to show him respect. It’s not like Joba who has been in the league for 2 minutes and shows people up in the middle of games. K-Rod does it at the end of games and is accomplished.

Bruney need to keep his mouth shut and stay off the DL before he talks.

  41. Wait till they come to OUR house

K-Rod right now is better than anybody in the game. Only one close is the Papelscum.

  42. John L

Hey, Pete, how about a complete quote from K-Rod.

“I’m not going to waste my time [responding],” he told reporters.

“Instead of sending a message through the paper, next time you see me at Citi Field, come up to me and say that. I don’t even know who the guy is. He hasn’t pitched a full season and has always been on the DL, that’s what I know. So he better keep his mouth shut and do his job and not worry about somebody else.

“If the message came from somebody big like Mariano [Rivera], somebody who is big and is good at what he does, I’d respect it.”

Bruney would be wise to worry about his own team, like Joba, who is so obnoxious at any point in his outing.

  43. Fireman

Bruney calling out K-Rod is like Nick Green saying Derek Jeter is overrated

Bruney looks like such a clown. Know your place, kid. Do something in this league before you call someone out.

  44. Rose

K-Rod is one of the top closers. If he was on the Yankees, no one would say a word. Ask Girardi if he would like K-Rod on his team.

Bruney needs to do his job which is to set-up Mo. And if he is hurting to let his mgr. know and not lie about it.

  45. Wait till they come to OUR house

K-Rod is dominant this year, maybe next year. But he won’t stay dominant. Allows too many baserunners.

I doubt Papelbon stays dominant his whole career.

I don’t think K-Rod shows people up, but he looks rather ridiculous celebrating like he won a WS. Joba pumps his fist after big outs or great plays, I don’t think he’s showing people up either. The nature of the beast is that fans of this players’ team love them, and fans of other teams hate them.

  46. Papa Smurf

Bruney didn’t say K-Rod wasn’t a good closer he basically said he acts like a clown on the mound and its embarassing to see.

    Right now in there careers

    Bruney >>>> Mariano

Is there a full moon this week? Guys are very testy and chirpy. Henry, Tex, Girardi and now Penny’s response to Girardi saying it looked like he threw at Alex on purpose…

“I don’t give two f—- what Joe Girardi says,” Penny said. “I’m coming inside. I don’t care. Anybody can say that. We can say that about the time they hit our guys. I’m just trying to pitch inside. Maybe he should worry about managing and not trying to be the commissioner.

“Why wouldn’t he say that the night before? Don’t wait a day, then say it. He should worry about managing and let the umpire crew do their job.”

    http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....s_bac.html

  48. Dr. Cox

    “Dr. Cox, you’re right.
    Would Aceves start then?”

Nope. If (GOD, ALLAH, MOSES, JESUS, BUHHDA, VISHNU, THE FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER, BRAD NOWELL, and JETER FORBID!!!), Mo goes down and Joba goes to the closing position we will see Wang in the rotation for a long time no matter what. Aceves will stay as the long man/ 2 or 3 inning guy and Bruney will be setup.

If that happens, prepare for some more frustrations,

  49. Wait till they come to OUR house

Bruney has pitched WAY less this year than Mo. Once they pitch the same amount of innings is when I annoint Bruney better than Mo.

  50. Betsy

AZ Four, thanks……I’m a pessimist, so maybe that’s just my natural negativity coming out, but I’m trying to be as objective as I can. This team is in trouble…..

  51. Mr. Clean

If K-Rod doesn’t know who Bruney is then how does he know he is always on the DL? :?

Either way, this was such a dumb move by Bruney to even initiate this. Keep your mouth shut and pitch.

  52. josh

“He needs to keep his mouth shut and do his job”

kind of ironic from the guy who screams and dances around when he saves a game. that quote made me laugh

  53. Wait till they come to OUR house

Dr. Cox, you’re saying Wang, Hughes, A.J., CC, Andy then? I’m working it out in my head.

  54. Bryan

The Yankees are a bunch of pathetic human beings

  55. Don

Our players (and manager and GM) just talk wayyy too much.

Imagine if Hank was still around? It would be even more of an embarrassment.

Girardi is jacked I bet he could take that fat slob Penny.

  57. Rockks

    ::sigh:::

All these arguments and war of words are just making this team even more depressing than they are on the field.

Can they all just shut up and start playing crisp baseball again?

  58. Wait till they come to OUR house

Betsy, you are a respectful fan and I’m sorry II called you a fair weather fan before. That was not true. But you are a pessimist.

It comes down to whether you believe the pitching will sort itself out. I believe that. Many do. And many don’t.

If the pitching sorts itself out, we’re a very good, even great, team. If it doesn’t, we’re an average to bad team at best. Maybe, if our offense stays hot for awhile, we squeak into the playoffs then get bounced quickly.

I think the pitching will get better. You don’t. That is where we fundamentally disagree.

    ——————————————————–

Yeah your right its not like John Henry and Larry Luchianno and red sox players dont talk trash. Didn’t K-Rod tell the phillies they were the team to beat this year.

  60. Dr. Cox

“Dr. Cox, you’re saying Wang, Hughes, A.J., CC, Andy then? I’m working it out in my head.”

Yes. Well not in that particular order, but yes.

  61. Wait till they come to OUR house

Penny vs. Girardi in a fight, I’d take Joe any day of the week.

  62. Wait till they come to OUR house

Dr. Cox, all right. Just making sure.

  63. PC Dave

The only person who may turn it around is AJ… but even turning it around for him means inconsistency.

Wang’s problems are all mental. If he doesn’t have a good start against the Nats, he is out of the rotation (basically what Girardi said and Wang himself said he knows it) and then we’re back at square one.

Joba is a young pitcher. He is going to be up an down all year. He’ll also hit his innings limits in August sometime.

Andy is pretty much toast. He can’t even give us innings anymore, let alone good performances. Despite his win total, he has 1 quality start in his last 8 starts. He is part of the problem.

And if Hughes comes back in the rotation… it’s another Joba. A young pitcher who will show signs, but have his growing pains and is on an innings limit.

I don’t think it is a given at all that the rotation becomes championship caliber. I can see both sides of the equation.

  64. Nick in SF in Larkspur

If, god forbid, Mo couldn’t close for a while, Bruney is the closer. His mouth is ready for it.

  65. Sarah

John: It was Molina who caught Joba’s 1-0 win over Beckett. Molina has caught most of Joba’s games and I was sick to see him go DL. Posada has had many good year, but this might not be his year for calling pitches. Mussina preferred Molina and in his Orioles days always had his own catcher.

  66. brent

Dr Cox *God almighty heaven forbid* Dude your funny,I can’t
    stop layghing.

  67. Wilson

This team is very angry right now it seems

Why not take that anger out on the field rather than through the press and start winning some games?

  68. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance!

Brad Penny can talk all the crap he wants. He isn’t long for BOS. They are trying to trade him. I hope they send him to the Nats. LOL!

  69. Dr. Cox

Let the players, coachers and owners talk trash to each other. I have no problem with it.

In fact this reminds me of the Dead Ball Era when players used to insult each other all the time. Entire dugouts would be screaming and heckling the pitchers and batters.

Baseball was NOT a gentlemens sport back then. Only as society became more and more sensitive, did this become an issue.

    I love it.

  70. howard

Wow, K-Rod said that to Brian Bruney’s face?

What, he didn’t, but said it to the media, which is exactly what he criticized Bruney for? OK.

  72. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance!

  74. _

    I

  75. Betsy

    Wait, no need to apologize.

Believe me, I wish I were an optimist. I do think the Yankees are a good team – my comments make it sound like I think they are trash, and they’re not. I don’t expect them to play perfect baseball – they’re human, so that’s out of the question. I’m just frustrated – that series in Boston just epitomized everything that has been wrong with the team in recent years. It also seems like whenever something can go wrong, it does. The SP should have been much better than this…..then the injuries……the pen being as bad as it turned out to be. I expected the offense to be what it is (both good and bad), but that’s the only part of the team that’s lived up to expectations. We can only hope for better…………

Didn’t Marte see Dr. Andrews yesterday? I wonder why no reports yet….

  76. Snyder

Bruney takes this stuff way too seriously

I remember in Oakland a couple of years ago we played an extra innings game and Travis Buck had the game winning hit off Bruney in the 13th inning and the team celebrated at home plate (as is customary after a walkoff win) and Bruney commented on how Buck was showboating and celebrating and he didn’t like it and would show him next time or something like that.

Umm Bruney, he got the game winning hit off you!

  77. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance!

These feuds are being egged on by the media. It’s just them trying to generate a story and keep their respective newspapers and outlets in business. Alex has been on his best behavior (save for dating Kate “I’ve dated everyone” Hudson) and they need something to write about. The players/managers/owners are stupid for playing into their hands.

  78. pat

If saying the magic word can get a pitcher thrown out of a game, does saying the magic word about a manager to the media make the commissioner’s office consider a suspension they might not have been thinking about?

  79. Pat M.

K-Rod has been a puke since he came up in 02…..He’s not a very well liked player and in fact their were always rumblings in the Angel clubhouse about his bs antics and bush league celebrations……In fact in 04 A-Rod got into it with him about being professional and acting like this isn’t your first save……The Angels miss his saves, but they do not miss him and his bs……

  80. randy l.

the yankees can’t sign the two top pitchers in the free agent market and have an almost 5.00 era almost 40 % into the season without there being problems for the pitching coach.

eiland has to be on the hot seat.

  81. Michael

“Bruney has pitched great so far this season”

ya….pitched great for all 9 innings of his appearances this season.

and he hasn’t pitched one season that’s even remotely comparable to K-Rod’s numbers.

If K-Rod is in Yankee bullpen giving up 2 runs in 30.1 innings, I dont care if he dances like a nutjob for 15 minutes on the mound everytime he gets a save.

  82. Rose

    Michael

    You are right.
    ————————————————————–

K-Rod is a top closer and only 27 years old. Mets made a great pick-up when they signed him.

  83. dad

let molina fransico combo catch next year. posada to full time dh.

  84. dad

rose i bet if old revera were the sox closer they would dump him and get k rod.

  85. randyhater

I think Bruney’s been reading this blog too much and is starting to believe all the frenzied hype he’s been getting here.

I like the guy and always have. And a big mouth and an over-inflated sense of one’s abilities aren’t necessarily bad traits in a short reliever.

But people here (and in our front office) need to remember that Bruney is not the ultimate answer, unless the ultimate question is “who sucks less than Jose Veras?”

He’s a guy with a live arm who’s pitched well in short spurts between long stays on the DL. He’s also had stetches where he walks the ballpark and tries to throw every pitch through a wall.

I’m dying to see him back, same as everyone else, but that’s more a statement on the other slobs we have out there than it is an endorsement of him.

In the meantime he should rehab more and pontificate less.

  86. abt

    Bruney – what a bush-league comment.
    That cracks me up.
This impartial baseball fan (Mariners fan) knows that Frankie Rodriguez is one of the best players in the game, and owns a big old World Series ring – while Bruney is a loser. Period.

  87. Wei

I don’t get it. What did KRod ever do (to Bruney personally!) to get a comment like that? I guess being on the DL is a little too boring, and Bruney got bored so he opened up and spoke before thinking of it over.

Personally, I don’t like the way KRod celebrates after a successful save either. It gets tiring after a while. But like KRod said, who the f*** is Bruney??? He is a NOBODY who stays on the DL too damn long! He should be pitching and earning the respect through his work like what Mo does! Not to talk to media with a big mouth…

  88. peter

Francisco Rodriguez is right and Bruney is so wrong!! why would bruney say something like that?? he should be worried about his arm.. not worried about what k-rod is doing on the mound after the game.. bruney is just a liar and will never be the closer for the yankees….he is a liar because he lied about his injured arm.. HOW MUCH MORE STUPID CAN SOMEBODY BE??

  89. can't take it don't dish it

Couldn’t we all have said “who’s Aubry Huff” a month ago? Krod has to understand that when you play the game like a spoiled child and show up teammates and oponents you are going to have to take the stray comment from old schoolers. Bruney is going to take some heat for it the same as Aubry Huff but this is the league self-policing. Reporters have complained about Krods bush league antics for years and it’s about time a major league (barely) player had the nads to call him out. The people who really should be disgraced by this are players like Jeter, Chipper Jones and Pujols – the elder statesmen of the league for not speaking out earlier in Krods career like so many are speaking out now against Joba.

Just like an ignorant Yankees fan to say something this retarded. Huff has been in this division hitting for power (if not average) for years now. If you didn’t know who Huff was, you’ve got horse-blinders on to teams other than those in NY. Not that that surprises me, as it corresponds to your organization’s whole mindset.
