Derek Jeter was not available to the media after the game. According to Joe Girardi, Jeter is not sure when he was injured but thinks it could have been in the fourth inning on Sunday when Gary Sheffield broke up a double play.
Jeter a “hitch” in his step, Girardi said. It sounds like he might not play tomorrow night. But Jeter is traditionally a hard man to keep out of the lineup.
Chien-Ming Wang dropped “It’s a Boy” cigars in everybody’s locker earlier in the day. There were balloons and assorted gifts at his locker including a large gift basket from the team full of Yankees baby stuff.

Offtopic, but if anyone likes the author Don DeLillo, I just read a screenplay based on his novella “Pafka at the Wall”. It’s a bizarre story largely based on “The Shot Heard ‘Round The World” between the Giants & Dodgers in 1951. The screenplay is downright amazing, and it looks like they are pushing hard to get it on film. The short story is also used as the prologue to DeLillo’s “Underworld”, considered to be his masterpiece. It is some of the best baseball fiction I’ve ever read. Actually, its just great writing regardless of whether you like baseball or not.

Alex looks like he can use a day off, but with Jeter hurting, don’t think he will play both Pena and Berroa.
Lannan has allowed 1 ER in his last 15 innings. He threw a CG SHO against the Mets last week.
In his 13 starts this year, he has only given up more than 3 ERs in 3 of them.
He has a 3.51 ERA this year. He really isin’t bad. As usual, we always draw the opposing team’s best pitcher in every series. If Wang puts us in a big hole, it may not be realistic we can come back, despite their horrid pen.
So does that mean Pena will fill in tomorrow if Jeter is a no-go? or Berroa?
A-Rod is not getting it done

Scorpio, Underworld is definitely worth the time and effort. It’s up there in my top 5 favourite books. If you appreciate absurd and twisted characters with a postmodern twist, White Noise will not disappoint. I say this in a good way. DeLillo never ceases to amaze me.

I don’t suppose this is new news … but man, the Yankees are scary. Just now I’m looking at their season stats, and I see that they’re better than average at every position. In fact, they’re significantly better than average at every position except center field, where Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera have been just average (but both have been fine defensively, which means the Yankees have gotten above-average performance from their center fielders, too).
Pitching-wise, we’ll see. While the Yankees certainly have the makings of a good rotation, CC Sabathia’s the only (sort of) sure thing, and overall their starters have a 4.89 ERA, 11th best in the American League and just a hair better than the Red Sox rotation. But it’s a different story in the bullpen. Red Sox relievers have the best ERA (3.01) in the league, while the Yankees are 11th there, too.
Are any of the hitters overachieving? Sure. Posada, Damon and Swisher are all well ahead of their projections and their career numbers. Are any of the hitters underachieving? No, not really. Except for A-Rod, who’s still rounding into game shape.
Barring serious injuries or terribly bad luck, the Yankees are going to finish the season among the league leaders in scoring. And they’re going to need to. Not because they’re pitching won’t improve; it probably will. Rather, because they’ve currently got the third-best run differential in their division, and only two teams from their division are allowed to qualify for the championship tournament.

Lannan is the best pitcher the Nats have, and the one who gives them the only realistic chance at a complete game. If he doesn’t make it through seven then the Yanks will have a good chance to unload against the Napalm Squad that Washington calls a bullpen, but if not, Wang had better have a good outing.
If Jeet’s ankle is giving him a bit of trouble tomorrow afternoon, put Pena in and let Jeet DH or pinch hit: with Wang on the mound Girardi should want all the defensive range he can put on the field.

That is one of my favoriate pieces of writing of all time. Absolutely mesmerizing.
Who wrote the screen play if you can say?
What a great movie that would make. The writing is already structured in a cinematic style that nods towards the camera as it is.
DeLillo never should have changed the title of that section in the novel. He should have kept the title Pafko at the Wall as it was originally published in Harpers rather than calling it the Triumph of Death.

BTW Libra might be his best book. It’s not as ambitious as Underworld but the writing is much tighter and in ways more consistent. That is a great book.

Cashman is the GM, he’s not Wang wife or shrink. It’s not his job to be supportive of Wang. (that’s a jock strap’s job, ba-dum-psh!)
The Yankees screwed up Wang’s rehab but I’ve hardly seen any evidence to show that they dislike the guy.

Cashman says that Wang shouldn’t have a problem because “his contract says baseball player,” not starter and he “is sporting a 20-something ERA,” adding “We didn’t put him in this situation.”

You are probably right about Libra being one of his most consistent works, as his biggest knock has always been that he can be too broad and meandering at times. Some critics go out of their way to attack him as arrogant, which I absolutely do not agree with.
You’ll be happy to know that the title of the screenplay reverted back to the original title, “Pafka at the Wall”.
The only problem now is getting funding for a short film.
I may be lending a hand in helping them target potential donors and funding…which I’m sure would lead to an eventual face to face meeting with DeLillo himself…which would lead to an exorbitant amount of stuttering on my behalf.

Are you serious? That’s amazing. I didn’t know he had any interest in writing for film. Granted it’s been a huge influence on his work and I suppose it would be a challenge for him (especially in 90 odd pages!).
You are lucky man. Getting to meet him would be phenomenal. He doesn’t do much in the way of public events, obviously. The interviews he’s done are very interesting (though not too many of them). He always has fascinating things to say.
Good luck on the project. I hope it gets made. What a great movie that would make – especially if he himself spent time working on the screen play.

Zach — that is really cool news. I was bowled over by that story when I read it at the beginning of Underworld, and have told more than one person that, if they couldn’t be convinced to read the whole book, they should at least do themselves the favor of reading that part.
And CB — thanks for the recommendation on Libra. That’ll definitely go on my list. To be honest, White Noise, the only other one of his that I’ve read, didn’t do a ton for me. But Underworld, uneven as it could be, had some terrific parts.
In a similar vein, if anyone is thinking of reading Infinite Jest but hasn’t, just go ahead and do it. My wife is reading that now and keeps reminding me of how great it is. And not an overly difficult read at all, contrary to how it often gets tagged.
White Noise is very good. Mao II is good – and the opening is great. What’s so interesting about the opening to Mao II is that you can see the nascent methods for Pafko at the Wall developing. It’s much shorter – but you can see how Pafko at the Wall is an extension of that opening. Plus the first part of Mao II is set at yankee stadium (though for weird purposes).
Agreed with you on Falling Man – though there are real moments of brilliance in that book. Underworld is a really great book. Amazing. If you haven’t read the opening you really need to as a baseball fan. Phenomenal.

I know it’s a huge jump and a different position, but by watching the video of him I see the small quick powerful speedy Kinsler type… could be just me.

I was just checking the game thread when CC gave up the homer to see what the reaction was here…I’m sorry I can’t watch a game and follow this thread. I get too pissed off. Anyway, my assumptions were correct, Posada bashing.
I guess nobody seen that CC shook off Posada’s first call and CC went with the slider. On top of that, he put it right in the guys wheelhouse. The idiots on this site that bash Jorgie for that should be ashamed of themselves.
DB: I wasn’t around during that part of the game, but please consider the possibility that some of the Posada bashing you read might have been satirical; this whole thing is a big running joke – for some.

Hi Nick, I know yours was satirical and a couple of the others..but a few didn’t look like it. It’s always one of the problems with messaging and comments. There’s no voice inflection to know what someone is really saying. Perhaps it’s not such a good idea to feed the baboons anyway. They always seem to rip the vinyl off the roof.
SamVa, I didn’t see Slade bat, but Ian Kinsler has a very distinct stance and swing. He swings with everything he’s got. We’d be very lucky indeed if Slade amounted to what Kinsler has become.
He is such a raw talent, a baby. It’s really a crap shoot. He’s got to stay healthy, round out in his build more, and most importantly..eat, sleep. drink, and crap baseball while love doing it. God bless him and I hope he does. It sounds like he’s already been through a lot in his life.

Don’t agree with the take of Pete and other writers this morning that losing to the Nats is embarrassing or tragic just by it happeneing.
This is baseball. On any given day, any team can win.
The Nats may lose a record number of games this year but they have managed to win a game with the Phillies. the Mets and the Dodgers on the road.
That looks to me like the company you might not be embarrassed to be in come October.

Anyone know where to find out what draft choices get by place chosen in draft?
i.e. 100th pick gets $100k or 600th pick gets $10k as examples?

I also have to disagree with people who “disregard” the win, simply because it was against the Nationals. Seems to me a win is a win, and what you’re supposed to do is accumulate as many as you can, trying to get the most out of anyone.

IMO, too many fans and members of the media look at baseball as if its college football. In college football, good teams roll over really bad teams with regularity. That doesn’t always happen in baseball because a starting pitcher on any given day can control ANY team.
Even the 1962 Mets, widely acknowledged to being the worst baseball team of all time, won 40 games.
That’s what seperates baseball from other sports. For one day, ANY bad team can win a game if their pitching shuts down the opponent.

There are no “discounted” wins in a baseball season. Again, its the college football mentality seeping into baseball fans minds. You don’t have to have “impressive” wins to impress pollsters. You win and you move onto the next day.
Its why taking the daily temperature of a baseball team is a wasted exercise. People still do it but, its a waste of time.
Well CB a couple of months ago Uncle Ellsworth and I were talking about Ayn Rand and I ended up rereading The Fountainhead, now your glowing endorsement of Don Delillo will ensure I pick up ‘Underworld’ on my way home from B and N. I am always looking for inspired works. Thanks.
