Wang getting better every day

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 18, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This from the AP:

Major League Baseball has announced a scoring change that takes a double away from Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia and instead charges Yankees right fielder Nick Swisher with an error.

In the June 10 game, which the Red Sox won 6-5, Swisher chased Pedroia’s fly ball toward the short wall behind the Pesky Pole in right field but pulled up and the ball bounced once off the warning track and into the stands. It was ruled a ground-rule double.

The change announced at Boston’s game against Florida on Thursday night gives Swisher an error, takes a double and an RBI away from Pedroia and takes an earned run away from Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang.

    Right call.

  3. Wait till they come to OUR house June 18th, 2009 at 11:02 pm

See, Wang isn’t as bad as we thought!

  4. Erica - newly OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Does that get the ERA under 12??? LOL

  5. igotid88 June 18th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

So everything that was posted that day never happened?

  6. Htman213 June 18th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

So he is at 12 EVEN now??

  7. Htman213 June 18th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Yankees are doing their best to justify having the Wanger in the rotation.

  8. m June 18th, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Good things come to those who wait. ;)

Can they take away those runs from yesterday, too?

  9. Scott June 18th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

    From the previous thread—

Wake me up when AJ Burnett ever shows the guts that CC did last year pitching on 3 days rest 5 times through the rotation to help a team that he was not going to re-sign with, make the playoffs for the first time in 27 years. Risking his career in time for his big payday.

Oh, he has also made multiple All-Star games, won a CY Young, and has the best statical chance of any active pitcher to win 300 games.

If you can’t understand why he has more currency than Burnett, I don’t know what to tell you. Why shouldn’t CC have more rope? What has Burnett done to earn any rope?

  10. Scorpio June 18th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

See JJ Wang IS a good luck charm!
    Good for Daddy Wang.

Maybe JJ can rub some luck on Swisher so he stops making boneheaded base running blunders.

  11. Bronx Jeers June 18th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

    Good for MLB.

Enough with these non-errors because a fielder doesn’t actually touch a ball.

  12. GreenBeret7 June 18th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

It may be the right call, but, unless that changed within 24 hours, they can’t make a change, That’s the rules.

  13. igotid88 June 18th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

I had a feeling that call was gonna be changed.

  14. Boston Dave - OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:11 pm

Anybody know why the Sox game is still “delayed” instead of “Florida wins 2-1 after 5 innings” ?

  15. pat June 18th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Unless they change the L to a W from that night, all the rest is just details.

  16. Dethrone June 18th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Wait, what did Joba do what was wrong?

Because he is not in the corner crying at the fact that he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings? Isn’t that a quality start? :?

If you are looking for a scapegoat, look at the offense. Brad Penny, Fernando Nieve, Sharion Marthis, John Lannan, Chris Stamman

All had their best games of the season against us this past week.

  17. Scooter10 June 18th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

    I think Wang’s ERA drops from 12.65 to 12.31.

  18. Jon June 18th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Joba is Cashman’s crown jewel and the face of the youth movement. He is a rock star. He has already been incorporated into the Yankees marketing plan.

    How should he be treated?

“Anybody know why the Sox game is still “delayed” instead of “Florida wins 2-1 after 5 innings” ?”

    Because we are stubborn! :)

Honestly Dave, you pose a good question. It is getting a little ridiculous with it already being past 11 and they would have to play four innings.

  20. Brandon 5 Cena 0 "I'm Brandon and I'm AWESOME !" June 18th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Papelbut just announced he’d be willing to sign w/ the Yankees

“Not only the Bronx, but anywhere. I think anywhere is a possibility. You always have to keep that in the back of your mind because you can’t just be one-sided and think that, “Oh, I’m going to be in a Red Sox uniform my entire career” because nowadays that is very, very rare and hopefully we can because there’s no question I would love to stay in a Boston Red Sox uniform but I have to do what’s best for me and play in an atmosphere where I’m wanted.”

  21. Betsy June 18th, 2009 at 11:18 pm

GB, I agree……..Joba is the Nick Swisher of starting pitchers. I like him, he’s a good kid, but he’s not overly professional. He should take a cue from Phil, who’s handled his ups and downs amazingly well and should get credit for that. Damon had some unflattering “stuff” to say about Phil after the Baltimore game, but why is he silent when it comes to Joba? Do the players think he’s untouchable in that way? Joba has let the fame go to his head…Does he think he’s the first very talented pitcher to come down the pike? I like pitchers showing confidence enough to shake off a few pitches here and there, but all the time? Fighting with his catcher? He’s a stubborn boy…..

  22. Z Man June 18th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

    Scott,

Burnett seems to have a few die-hard fans of his on this board who knock other pitchers to try and prop him up or justify his performance.

It’s pretty sad actually. Knocking a guy who is 5-1 with a 2.92 in his last 8 starts and 7+ innings in every of those starts is mindless.

  23. ray (sox fan) June 18th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Even before Papelbon said that I have been wondering if the Sox would resign him.

I am sure he wants a long term contract with big bucks. That is a risky thing with a reliever and quite frankly he hasn’t been as effective this year as last.

I don’t think he will have the longevity of Rivera. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sox were thinking about developing Daniel Bard as a closer.

GB I heard little Manny pitched good in Charleston tonight, details ?
    ——————————————————————————————
He lost, but, 6 innings, 4 hits 2 runs, 1 unearned, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts, 1 WP. His control has been outstanding for an 19 year old. 14 walks and 58 strikeouts in 61 innings.

    that’s 27 walks in 103 innings, with 95 strikeouts.

Keep in mind, he didn’t turn 19 until March.

No offense, bad defense and bad base running.

  25. Boston Dave - OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

    ray,

I’m near the Cape and it hasn’t rained at all around here. I heard it was pouring at Fenway and there were no signs of it slowing down. Just curious if the umps had another weather report.

I can’t imagine they can keep waiting if it’s still raining 30min from now.

  26. R+ June 18th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

Joba and Damon are good friends

Joba was RECRUITING CC and AJ this winter— they both mentioned him in their press conferences.

He’s probably the most popular guy in the clubhouse after Damon.

  27. bronxboy June 18th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Have we had enough yet? Losing two of three, not ot the worst team in the AL, but the worst team in baseball. Sorry, but the managers job is to get the most out of every player and his team. Once again the team is underachieving. Once again he has at least a team that is in the top 5 talentwise in baseball, and once again he has them playing like his roster has middle of the pack talent. The entire pitching staff except maybee CC is having individually one of their worst seasons.
Petitte is under performing, Burnett under performing, Wang under performing, Joba under performing. Marte never pitched so bad until he joined the Yankees. It will be a second year in a row without October baseball with this guy managing. Hes got better starting pitching potential than almost any team, better offense potential than any team, defense has been upgraded and the results are the same as last year.

  28. GreenBeret7 June 18th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

    Betsy,

Chamberlain’s attitude removes any reason for giving him anything. One thing, if the Yanks sent him to Scranton, it hurts the team. That would be just fine, His team mates would have the ammo to jump in his azs with all 48 feet. Perhaps that would wake him up and he’ll realize he’s only part of the team….not THE team. Players, like soldiers hate getting punished because of one jerk. The team mates will then deal with the issue.

  29. Mark H June 18th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

My bro is at the game he is a jerk Redsox fan, said the umps came out a little white ago while it was pouring to look at the field, and the sox snnounced they are going to continue to wait.

  30. ray (sox fan) June 18th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

    Dave,

They just said a minute ago on the radio that the rain had slowed down some at Fenway. Not sure if that means they will try to resume the game or not.

  31. Boston Dave - OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

    ray,

I agree with you on Papelbon.

He’s had no interest in letting the Sox buy out any of his free agency years.

Part of what makes him as good as he is, is that confidence ( arrogance) that may lead him to demand a record contract. His stats do back him up at this point but the Sox are bargain hunters. They’re not going to overpay for past success.

  32. GreenBeret7 June 18th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Betsy, I don’t think the “hands off of Joba” treatment is going to last much more. He’s not deserving of it. It’s going to blow up and get ugly if the team isn’t careful. This could be handled by Girardi, but, seriously, this is better handled by the players….Same thing with Swisher and Burnett. these three guys need to, in the words of Hank Bauer, “Don’t screw with my money.”.

  33. Banks June 18th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Yeah…. let’s kill the 23 year old kid with a 3.89 ERA and has the 2nd highest quality start percentage on the team.

He has been our 2nd best pitcher this year despite his struggles.

He is not the problem. Stop trying to make him into one. Take him out of the rotation, and you have only one pitcher with an ERA under 4 in the rotation.

  34. Wait till they come to OUR house June 18th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

ray (sox fan)-Heard Papelbon’s little bro is in the system?

  35. Wait till they come to OUR house June 18th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

    GB7, I responded previous post.

  36. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

The offense crapped the bed tonight. No mistaking that.

Strangely enough I actually feel better about Wang’s start yesterday compared to Joba’s today.

I dunno what it is about Joba. Maturity? Love the kid, but he’s not free from criticism either and again the offense tonight-just ugh.

New series starts tomorrow, win it

  37. Dove June 18th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Betsy – Why do I get the feeling that if Hughes made those same comments, you would say it was good for him to show confidence?

Why do you try and pick on Joba (and CC) to prop up Hughes and Burnett?

  38. ray (sox fan) June 18th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Sox game just called…..Marlins win it.

  39. bronxb June 18th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Joba was more effective in the pen. Let Hughes take his spot

  40. Boston Dave - OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

    ray,

as a Yanks fan speaking… it would be unbelievably frustrating if they get this game in because it almost works out perfectly for the Sox.

they get a guy who is dealing a 1 hitter through 5 out of the game and make it a bullpen matchup, where they have an overwhelming advantage.

After the embarrassing Yanks loss, a Sox loss would ease the pain a bit.

A Sox comeback win at 1am would be salt in the wounds.

  41. Wait till they come to OUR house June 18th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Whew, thanks for the update ray.

Good news for us Yanks fans.

Actually I didn’t know that. Interesting.

I think they just drafted a relative of Carl Yastremski.

  43. Jake June 18th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Joba, Burnett, Swisher – all need to come back down to earth and stop messing around.

  44. Boston Dave - OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

    ray,

thanks! I can sleep easier tonight.

I may still be seeing Cano and Swisher’s double plays in my nightmares… but when I wake up the Yanks will still be only 3 back.

    phew :)

  45. swingsandmisses June 18th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

I’m five minutes from Fenway and as far as I can see it’s not raining outside my window.

Joba? So believes his own press.

  46. Brandon 5 Cena 0 "I'm Brandon and I'm AWESOME !" June 18th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Can’t wait to see this kid grow.

  47. Hitting June 18th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

The biggest issue is not Joba, but the offense or lack therof
How do we explain what they did the last four games offensively? Did they face bob Gibson?
thats the issue, Joba and Wang gave up enough runs to win a major league game.

  48. Wait till they come to OUR house June 18th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Yeah ray, I heard that they were going to try and develop mini-Papelbon into a closer and trade off the big variety.

But just a rumor. And a VERY shady one since this scenario wouldn’t occur for a few years anyway.

  49. m June 18th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

    Scott,

That’s not the point. The point is that there are other Yankee pitchers that aren’t named Joba & CC. But the fans would rather tear them apart rather than root for them.

AJ’s had 2 really rough starts. But you’d think he killed somebody’s kid from what you read here.

You’d think that Wang blew up a bus full of school kids.

You’d think that Andy injected himself with….oops, bad example.

All the pitchers, not only CC and Joba, deserve our support.

    THAT’S what I’m talking about.

  50. Lonz June 18th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Hey, you guys wanted great chemistry right? Well this is what you get— 3 stooges with AJ, Swish, and Joba.

This is what happens when you let dumb baseball players run the clubhouse.

  51. stuart June 18th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

game was called… bad for the sux.. these rainout situations are insane. neither the yank game or the sux game should have been played period the end..

joba is a problem because he does not have rasner stuff. he has once in a lifetime stuff and guys like that do not walk pete rose harris and yoge berra nieves and 2 or 3 other guys in 6 innings..

joba gets less lsack because like arod he is supremely talented unless we are all blind…

  52. Rishi June 18th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

    yet another new post

  53. tampayank June 18th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

I feel bad for Hughes, he really deserved to stay in the rotation, I hope Wang gets back to his old self but I have my doubts….he won’t be much use if he ends up battling for 5 inning outings the rest of the year….

not sure if this has been mentioned but tonight was the first game without a home run at the New Yankee Stadium

  54. m June 18th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

AND THE SOX LOOOOOSSSE!!!! DA SOX LOSE!!!!!

  55. stuart June 18th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

burnett has had more then 2 bad starts. i would accept the bad start from aj if i got the occasional dominating shutout outing from him also, they have not come yet….

  56. Bronx Jeers June 18th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

I could see the Sox letting Paps go to free agency.

Saying he’d consider the Yanks may not be the best thing to say in regards to the fans sensitivities but it’s not the dumbest thing he’s ever said.

At least he’s honest about $$$ being his priority.

  57. Giuseppe Franco June 18th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

There is no chance they move Joba to the pen.

For whatever reason, it now takes him 20-30 pitches to get warmed up and his velocity up.

That doesn’t exactly translate well to the 8th inning.

Cashman and Girardi have no intention of moving him.

  58. GreenBeret7 June 18th, 2009 at 11:33 pm

He’s 23 years old. If he wants to play “big boy” behave like it. If he wants to act like a jerk that knows all about baseball and run things, he can do it in Scranton. He’s costing the team a lot of innings, and that costs games.

  59. Arod June 18th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

Whats his deal? I mean if he hurt, give him a pass, and a rest, and get him out of the 4 spot. If hes not hurt whats his problem? His role is to what? drive in runs right? hit at least 260-270?

  60. Wait till they come to OUR house June 18th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

If hewanted to come to the Yanks I’d take him. And he is my least favorite player of all time.

Clemens did it and Damon did it.

  61. Boston Dave - OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:36 pm

“I could see the Sox letting Paps go to free agency.”

    ——–

    no doubt.

IIRC, the Sox have approached him the past 2 offseasons about a longer term deal and he has declined.

The Sox are notorious for finding bargains (they did a great job with Pedroia and Youk) and Papelbon is not going to give them a hometown discount.

He feels he is the best, his #s support his case, and he wants to be paid for it when the time comes.

    I can’t blame the guy. I don’t like him… but I certainly can’t blame him.

  62. Wait till they come to OUR house June 18th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

Of course, I’d only take him if Mo retired. And he’d never replace him.

The chant of “overrated” was an all star game highlight.

  63. Joba? or Wang? June 18th, 2009 at 11:38 pm

    Sorry,
NOBODY on the staff has cost the Yankees more games/innings/bullpen than Wang. I know what he has done in the past but he got injured last June. He obviously did not come to spring training prepared. He had a foot fracture, he wasnt run over by a car. For him to have gone a full year after his initial injury and still not be right is wrong

  64. Boston Dave - OPPC June 18th, 2009 at 11:40 pm

“If hewanted to come to the Yanks I’d take him. And he is my least favorite player of all time.”

    ——–

I’d prefer he find another home. If he leaves Boston, that’s good enough for me.

It would be hard to root for him. I’d find a way, but I’d rather not have to deal with that.

    Same with Beckett.

  65. Rose June 18th, 2009 at 11:42 pm

CC is the best Yankee pitcher. He wants the ball and goes long into games. The only pitcher that gives you innings. The rest of the staff is mainly 5/6 innings and out.

At least Pettitte admits it when he stinks. Other starters have excuses. AJ and Joba need to throw strikes.

    ————————————————————–

Hughes has been doing a consistently good job.

amazing. Fans and media idiots share the same small brain concerning Rodriguez. Nobody said a word about the start Teixeira had, except, “Well, Teixeira always starts slow. He’ll be just fine.” Guess what? He was. Here’s something else. Rodriguez’ numbers are still better than Teixeira’s after 140 at bats.

    Go whine about something else.

I give Alex credit. He had surgery and came back ahead of schedule. “Fans” need a scapegoat and Alex is it. He is the only Yankee being booed. And others with their dumb play are not.

Pretty much as most would think A top two type starter, but, I just go by what I’ve seen of him in 6 of his starts. He’s impressive….very impressive. Has all the pitches, attacks hitters and fears nobody. Rare for a barely 19 year old kid from Mexico. Has a lot of Ron Guidry in him from the size (5’10″, 160 pounds) to the bulldog attitude. Never have seen him get excited in a game. When he gets that slider down, he’s going to break a lot of Red sox hearts.

I did make one mistake…Banuelos just turned 18 in March, not 19. When he matures a little that low 90s fastball will be mid 90s and upwards.

  70. Johnny D. June 19th, 2009 at 1:52 am

    lol! Who gives a sh*t?

  71. Terry #1 June 19th, 2009 at 10:05 am

I’ve seen plays like that called hits too many times to believe that they should make an exception of that one play.

Getting bad reads, slowing down close to walls, taking bad routes, overrunning line drives over your head, etc.

    They’ve always been called hits.

What makes Swisher’s case so special?

They need to protect Wang’s ERA to massage Taiwan’s collective ego?

    This smells.

  72. Rivera June 19th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Was that during the record breaking error less streak?
