You can go home again

The scowling image of Alex Rodriguez took up most of the sports section front page in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel today. “Hometown hero?” was the headline.

The accompanying story quotes several of A-Rod supporters including his high school coach.

Alex gets booed pretty much everywhere he goes, even Yankee Stadium lately. But Miami is the place he calls home and where he grew up. If there ever is a crowd that will welcome him, it should be here.

The Marlins, who usually draw flea-market sized crowds, are expecting 100,000+ this weekend for the Yankees. It’ll be interesting to hear how Alex is received.

maybe the comfort of home will get his bat going

  2. you gotta have faith (we need you wang!) June 19th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

i guess we can take comfort that he did actually hit the ball pretty hard yesterday in which the left fielder had no business catching

Seriously. My hope for last night’s game went out with that catch

“maybe the comfort of home will get his bat going”

Be better if the comfort of his hip got his bat going.

Washington is a quality team… no shame in losing 2 of 3 to them. A lot of teams will get beaten by them.

yeah wonder if we could get details on how the hip is feeling, Yankee post game usually doesn’t talk about it…I honestly thought they would DH more coming back from injury, not a doctor but maybe activity helps the rehab process more

honestly I can’t help but shake my head when he and other Yankees get booed at home…they know we’re not happy with the performance without the moronic boos…remember, it’s supposed to be a home field *advantage*

Haha Clyde I love the sarcasm. Wait. No, I really do. There is no shame in losing to them 2 out of three. But really what did we think was going to happen when everyone in the media was saying that losing one of those games would have been unacceptable. In reality we should be happy the Yankees won one. This team will make the playoffs through default of so many teams being bad this year. I don’t expect them to do jack in the playoffs. Of course I hope I’m proved very wrong on this.

Re: the Sun-Sentinel article, the “You do steroids” chant from Red Sox fans – who cheered Manny Ramirez for years not to mention a laundry list of other likely users – was one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen even from that fan base.

#1 was the huge “Trader” sign at Fenway the first time Damon returned. WOW.

No, no. They’ve only been playing baseball practically all their lives. That’s not enough to know whether or not they failed. If they didn’t hear the boos they’d think they were playing great ball.

Looking past the lost series with the Nats, this team is not as bad as some are making it seem. This team could go on a tear at any time, especially if Alex gets going again. This would be as good a time as any for that to happen…

That said, I wouldn’t be opposed to Alex getting a couple days off soon. I’ve heard some people say that he isn’t using his hip as much in his swing. In order for him to get right again, he needs to be able to do this. My concern is whether it is a mental issue or a physical issue.

In a way, what’s going on with Alex is very similar to what was going on with Wang. Everyone was wondering if Wang didn’t have the strength or if he just wasn’t trusting his foot. When the issue with Alex gets figured out, the lineup becomes a lot more dangerous (as shown by the first couple weeks after he came back and had some big hits).

While June is a little late to use the “it’s still early” excuse, look at how far out the team was in 2007 around this time. On June 19, that team was 35-33 and 9 games behind Boston (I think 5 behind Detroit in the WC). That team still made the playoffs. We’re 3 out in the division and 1 ahead in the WC right now. Let these guys play the games before you count the season as a bust.

They were 16-45 coming into Yankee Stadium. Come on now.

According to Girardi’s pre-game yesterday there is no intention to give A-Rod any days off in the upcoming stretch unless he actually asks for one (which I seriously doubt he would ever do).

Am I debating with a pimply teenager??

Consider we are playing without the DH for the next 9 days… we can’t afford to rest anyone really. We have an off-day on Monday, so that helps.

  16. Doreen June 19th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Boy, we can sure belabor a point on this forum, can’t we? There’s a new game against a new team in just a few hours. Maybe – just maybe? – we could try to move on? :)

No amount of agonizing can change the result of the last two days. And it makes no sense to go into every game expecting the worst. It’s a new day, a new team, a new game. The Yankees have a chance to win every day. They may not actually win everyday, but they have a chance to. Every day. There’s really only a handful of teams that can reasonably expect that, and the team we follow is one of them. Let’s enjoy that.

Baseball is all about disappointment and redemption. And the rally cry “We’ll get ‘em next time” has been handed from generation to generation. Hope springs eternal.

    Let’s Go Yankees!

Yeah – nobody in New England knows how to spell, particularly when trying to insult somebody.

    Barstards.

“They were 16-45 coming into Yankee Stadium. Come on now.”

Use your eyes. What did you see on the field those three games? Did the Nats pitch effectively? Did they throw strikes and challenge Yankees hitters? Did their bullpen do the job? Did you see a lot of errors? Did they make some good plays defensively, especially when they really needed to? Did the Nats make mistakes leading to outs on the bases? Did they get hits when they had runners on and score enough to win? Did you see a competent Nationals team or did you see a laughing stock of a baseball franchise?

No matter what their record says, no matter what you hear on TV or read in the press or on the net, the Washington Nationals baseball team showed up in Yankee Stadium this week. Your eyes told you that this is true.

Maybe they got up for the Yanks at new Yankee Stadium. Maybe they were playing for pride. Maybe they were playing to save Manny Acta’s job. Maybe time will show that they are improving and their record will soon reflect that. Who knows? And really, what does it matter why the Nats played the Yanks as well as they did?

There’s no shame here for our guys in losing the series to the surprising Nats. They played a team that was prepared and that was competitive. Don’t let pre-conceived notions blind you to what happened on the field.

He’s never going to ask for a day off, Girardi has to be careful. It’s odd that other players have gotten days off but the guy who had hip surgery hasn’t taken one single day off. I tend to think it’s fatigue more than any mental thing because he’s not hitting at all in any spot. Of course last night he had the best swing I’ve seen in weeks in the 7th inning and got robbed, that’s the Yankees luck lately. That catch messed up that entire inning. I keep thinking back to that pop up game against the Mets when Cano jumped on him and he grabbed his hip, I don’t think he’s 100% at all.

Be careful, someone might think you’re hinting that Cano was stupid to hang his whole weight on a guy three months out from hip surgery…:-(

Sun-Sentinel is a Lauderdale paper, not a Miami one. Kind of like Jersey to NYC.

  22. Sarah June 20th, 2009 at 11:29 am

As of today, Alex will sit two games. I remember thinking “don’t do that” when Cano jumped on Alex. Hope the rest is good for him. It is a good day to win game #2.
Oh and fans – - Berroa had an RBI ! ! So did Andy.
