Rally falls short, Yankees lose again
That’s that, a 6-5 loss against Florida as the Yankees could not tie it in the ninth.
The Yankees were 11 games over .500 and one game up in the AL East on June 8.
They are 4-8 since and now sit four games behind the Red Sox. Their offense has gone further south than Land Shark Stadium.
Back with reaction from the clubhouse and hopefully more information on CC Sabathia and his condition. It’s also a little curious as to why Phil Hughes didn’t pitch.

Wow, that was fast.
4 games and fading fast…
Man Pete you posted this fast.
The guy just walks Damon and Jeter swings at the first pitch? It’s a good thing there were already 2 outs or he would have bounced into yet another DP.
Who the hell swings at the first pitch after a walk?
Moron.
Pete probably already had the post typed out before the last pitch to Jeter.
This team went from the best in the majors to not even being able to win a series Vs the Nationals and Marlins.
Sad…..
Tremendous another swing at the first pitch. The guy nearly uncorks a wild pitch, little control, great to wait for your pitch. Oh well, it happens, but they are back to not being patient at the plate. Gardner’s at bat was tremendous, up there with a mission. I just don’t understand how a guy obviously worked up, walking someone, rattled, you bail him out by swinging at the first pitch.
Really clutch hitting there captain.
A morale victory… they fought hard, battled, and made the Marlins swat till the very last strike.
The team showed a heart of a champion.
Lindstrom throwing a 99 mph fastball and an 84 mph curveball after 9 innings in 95 degree weather is sick.
Seems like days ago that CC was pitching in this game.
Yankees are getting sucked right back into last year’s offense, double plays, swinging at the first pitch. Robbie was hot, but now is swing happy once again. They are no longer getting to the other team’s bullpen early.
Hey folks, or those who have ever played this game….That first pitch was going to be a get me over fastball to a career .317 hitter….It very well could be the best pitch he was going get to hit…Jeter hit a three hop bullet to short, 5 feet either way and we wouldn’t be having this bs conversation…..Too many chumps here now a days
I still respect Jeter enormously, but that was just idiotic. Swing at a first pitch with the guy throwing all over the place.
That lack of discipline has to be dealt with.
This team has againg run out of steam. Not showing any semblance of being a playoff contender. And we are less than two weeks away from the mid season point.
What does this team need to turn it around???
On June 8th, we were 7 games ahead of Tampa and the Angels for the WC.
Now?
We are tied with the Angels (in the loss column) for the wild card and and are a mere 2 games ahead of Tampa.
They pretty much erased all the cushion they had, all while facing the weakest portion of the schedule. Not easy to do, but they did it.
man..really don’t like swinging at the first pitch there ..good ab by johnny..and great for gardy ..though it sure would be nice to have a guy like shelly to come off the bench and hit instead of keeping meaningless A.Borroa on the bench to play third when Arod gets a day off every 38 days..
Frustrating game.
Looks like that erroneous throw from Melky came back to haunt the Yanks
Pat M. if it was a lay it over me fastball that was quite a shot he hit on the ground. When a guy has no control you make him prove he can throw a strike. A wild pitch would have scored a runner as well. Otherwise you just are guessing and swinging at whatever he threw which is exactly what Jeter did. Please don’t try and sell that as a good at bat. Damon could have done the same thing no?
the cap’n sure knows how to show the youngsters on the team how to do it by swinging early and often! good one rally killer, luckily for him there were 2 outs already or it would have been another double play.
The 2008 team is back.
Amazing how the team subtracted Rasner/Posnon/Giambi and replaced them with CC/Burnett/Teixeria and they are in the same position they were in last year.
Only the Yankees.

Looks like that erroneous throw from Melky came back to haunt the Yanks
Tomko gets a pass yeah
Melky’s throw was bad, but you live and die sometimes with those. He nails the guy a lot. The Yankees defense however has been horrendous after the errorless streak.
Never said that Carl.
To the regulars….not the regular trolls and idiots….good luck with the board over the next couple of days. Two days of whining and trolling will make this board untenable.
“That first pitch was going to be a get me over fastball to a career .317 hitter”
Pat,
We don’t know what other pitches Jeter would have seen in that at bat. Maybe he would have been K’d. Maybe he would have gotten a fat cookie over the plate and crushed it into the seats. What we do know is that the batter right before him was walked and that the pitcher was rattled. It would have seemed more prudent to gamble and take a few pitches instead of hitting into a would be DP.
get me over fastball or not… work the count ..that guy had no confidence in his offspeed with gardy on third so he was going to get another in that ab fastball.
The guy has a 100 MPH fastball, yet has an ERA over 5 and doesn’t even strikeout a batter per inning in the NL. He also has like 7 walks per 9 innings.
Enough with the excuses. He didn’t even make him throw strikes. Jeter gave him an easy out.
And this is your typical Yankee fan. Jeter gets a pass…always.
The Yankees are just playing poorly right now; just like TB played badly for a clip and many others. It is very frustrating to watch, but it’s a safe bet that it won’t last for much longer.
John, I can think of many times this year in which Melky thrown the ball and missed the plate by a lot. For every 1 good throw he has, he has had about 5 terrible throws.
Regardless, I never said he was the reason we lost. I said it came back to hurt the team, which it did.
However, it was a combined effort on many ends. At least Aceves did a great job; not sure why Girardi pulled him so fast
I am more curious to hear from Girardi and his decision to take out CC. It appears to not be a serious injury though.
Am I the only person that thinks that Nancy Newman is kind of cute?
“Jeter hit a three hop bullet to short”
A “three hop bullet”!!!!…LOL! More like a routine grounder. You optimists are incredibly amusing, please keep it up.
If I had to list guys who I wanted up there in a big spot, Jeter wouldn’t even be in the top 5 on the team.
I have more confidence in Brett Gardner or Cervelli than I do Jeter in a big spot. I certainly know Gardner will have a better AB. He owuld have made Lindstorm work.
When/If we miss the playoffs by a couple of games… look no further than this stretch.
Just like last year we had a losing record against sub .500 teams.
Tampa, Boston, and LA are eating these games for lunch while we are giving them away. It could prove to be the difference in late September.
How can a team with this much talent underachieve so much?
When is the last time Boston lost 8 of 12?
Who gets the blame for this team underachieving year after year?
Christina, not disagreeing with you, just saying he usually will always throw to get the runner. Unfortunately some times it will cost you and it did today.
As for the bullpen, they have used too many guys too many different ways I think. I mean I guess Hughes was unavailable today? Do you have a long relief guy. Aceves is being chucked out there however and whenever. These guys need to have actual roles to fill. Unfortunately guys like Tomko have proved to be a waste of time. Cashman certainly needs to do something here. They can’t wait forever and I for one think they are screwing around with Hughes’s arm.
I don’t want to hear about how they came back again – it’s too little, too late. They sleepwalk through most of the game and then expect to create that late inning magic. Interesting way to try and win games. They might want to try putting better at bats from the beginning of the game…They might also want to play, you know, some defense.
Tell me, what was the count to Gardner when he hit that triple, I’m just wondering out loud…..Yes, there is two schools of thought regarding Derek’s at bat….Take until he throws a strike, of jump on the first pitch because he doesn’t want to fall behind…….I say that was the best pitch Jeter was going to see plain and simple…..He took his cut, squared it up, but hit it right to short….
if girardi brought in hughes to pitch for most of the innings we might have won.
tomko???
girardi just loves to make moves.
10 pitchers a game & so on.
yanks lose twice in a row by one run…BAD losses…and the yankees need to learn to start hitting BEFORE the 9th inning :/
This team needs some additions (hitters or DEF set up man) or shake-up (FIRE GIRARDI)
“They sleepwalk through most of the game and then expect to create that late inning magic. Interesting way to try and win games. ”
It worked for a while. Not anymore. They need to get the offense going sooner. This “let’s wait until after the 6th inning to start hitting” crap simply isn’t working.
I agree, Betsy.
Tomko shouldn’t even be here.
He can pitch when we’re trailing and in blowouts. Twice in the last week he was asked to protect leads (Mets game, today) and he blew it both times.
There is a reason he has been with 12 teams in 12 years. He sucks. A 36 yd old journeyman should not take up a roster spot.
Boy Nancy Newman is really struggling to get her words out today.
Anyone think Melky could still be bothered by the time he jammed his shoulder? I guess that could affect his throwing.
this is a good team but no cf,bad bullpen & very little production from arod.
Jeter did not get a great cut on that sorry. If you are looking for a pitch and you get it a dribbler is not what you hit. Count in his favor Damon smoked a line drive foul. That’s looking for something and missing it.
Girardi’s biggest mistake was taking CC out for something that wasn’t even that serious by all accounts.
He was accused of not being cautious with injuries, now he is going to be ultra cautious, even if it costs us games.
Just like he wanted to be more of a player’s manager, now he has no control of the clubhouse and lets the players do whatever they want without exposing his authority (i.e A-Rod resting).
He goes from one extreme to the other. Not good.
Can’t beat the good teams, can’t beat the bad teams, can’t beat the mediocre teams.
Why would they pitch Phil? Didn’t he go 2 innings yesterday? We’ve yet to see him on back to back days. Or even on 2 days rest, lol.
May be saving him pending outcome of CC’s examination.
“I say that was the best pitch Jeter was going to see plain and simple”
But Pat, how can you say that? Do you have some magical crystal ball that we don’t know about? You have no idea how that at bat would have transpired. Neither do I. Like you said, there are two schools of thought. I think that my school is smarter than your school. And our proms are better.
Waldman: “Joe, will CC make his next scheduled start?”
Giardi: “He says yes, but darned if I know; I’ll have to ask Cashman on the next conference call.”
I’d rather Girardi be cautious one game with CC who has thrown a lot of pitches this year already than leave him out there and make something worse. All you need CC to do is tear a bicep or something by staying out there and over doing it. Who knows? But Yankees haven’t been cautious in the past and it has killed them.
Girardi’s press conference is insulting to listen to. The LEAST he could do it take responsibility for not preparing his team to face the dregs of the NL East.
Thanks Joe, for nothing.
The wining here is unreal.
Why can’t you people just accept the fact that this team is not as good as their roster would dictate it is? This core has underachieved for years, this year it is even more conspicuous.
They have the talent to win 125 games and they’ll probably win 88. Stop looking up and down the roster and expecting them to perform like the back of their baseball cards. They never have and never will play up to their talent.
You need to stop looking at the talent and start looking at the results. And talent is meaningless without execution….
Can you guys believe the Jays are only a game behind the Yankees? Insane stuff considering they have 7 pitchers on the DL….
I wish O’Neill would go down there and smash some water coolers, preferably over Tomko’s arm and putting him on the DL.
For everyone who is talking about that “well the guy would try to throw one over because he is walking hitters,” Lindstrom is not a guy known for consistently throwing strikes.
He had walked 19 guys in 27.1 IP coming into today. That’s a tad under 6.50 per 9 innings
So it’s not like he was a guy who is normally good who had just lost it, who might be able to, at will, come in with a strike. He is a guy notorious for falling behind hitters and paying for it (.265 BAA about and 5.20 ERA) despite his good stuff, and even if the pitch Jeter swung at was a strike, it was a pitcher’s pitch, and he never gave himself a chance to get a pitch to hit against a guy who has shown that even after throwing a first pitch strike, he will miss and fall behind on guys, or at least work the count more back in their favor to 2-2 or 3-2.

To the regulars….not the regular trolls and idiots….good luck with the board over the next couple of days. Two days of whining and trolling will make this board untenable.”
It’s not worth the aggravation. Lohud won’t get registration, because they value the number of comments – and that’s too bad.
Pete seems like a good guy who likes to talk baseball – but until the regulars go away and stay away – and the comments and view pages take a drastic hit – nothing will change.
If the Yanks are winning it’s quiet and peaceful. When they lose the trolls come out like sewer rats.
taking cc out was the right decision.
the problem was not bringing in one of our best pitchers in hughes & bringing in tomko to protect a lead.
tomko should only pitch when we are way behind or way ahead.
this is a perfect example of girardi losing this game.
a manager can’t lose games & girardi is right now.
you guys are talking about jeters ab when it should not have come to that.
hughes should be pitching a lot more & he should of taken over for sabathia.
we probably cruise to a win.
So Girardi needs to ask his team to get up to play baseball and not get complacent?
Isn’t that in indictment on the players rather than the manager? These millionaire superstars can’t play hard everyday without their manager telling them to?
That first pitch was going to be a first pitch strike….What would want him to fall behind 0-1 and have everyone crying that he should have swung at that get me over strike….A walk doesn’t get the job done people….Derek Jeter is a .317 lifetime hitter, he hit hard but right at someone…..Didn’t Gardner jump on the first pitch, and I don’t care about the walk to Damon….
You have to know one thing.
When Wang is back to the rotation, Yankees’ back luck also comes.
This is a bad decision.
Lots of us said the Boston series would leave a mark, and thus far, it has.
Take out Luis Castillo, and we have lost 4 straight series and 9 of 12 games.
Boston pushed them down and they have yet to get back up. Such a stark contrast to how they played before the Boston series.
I would’ve liked to see Jeter take more than one pitch with a guy on third.
A balk, a wild pitch, pass ball, all could score li’l g from 3B.
You have to know one thing.
When Wang is back to the rotation, Yankees’ “”bad”" luck also comes.
This is a bad decision.
No tests expected for CC. Day to day.
Girardi had no problem with Jeter swinging at the 1st pitch because he saw something he could handle and hit it hard.
CC says his level of concern is a 3 out of 10. He thinks he could have pitched through it but it’s June so you take extra precautions.
Christina,
Amazing how close Tampa and especially Toronto are with all their injuries.
Toronto lost 9 in a row, lost their only good pitcher and they are only 1 game behind us. We were 7 games ahead of Tampa a little over a week ago, now we’re 2 games back.
If you slump in this division, it will cost you. This ain’t the AL West.
“When Wang is back to the rotation, Yankees’ “”bad”” luck also comes.”
Are you on crack? You are attributing the Yankees bad play to Wang being in the starting rotation?
Well, that’s it for me. I’m outta here.
I think I need to turn the page because there really is nothing here that’s going to be helpful! I expect that there will be a lot of discussion from angry and disappointed fans (not blaming anyone) that won’t change a thing.
Though I think this blog definitely has it all over the dumb broad questions put on by YES. I don’t understand how that broad has a job. She’s more embarrasing than the losses.
If Burnett pitched today, we win 3-2.
Sigh. He had to draw a pitcher we had no chance of hitting.
tomko the new veras? i was shocked hughes wasn’t in the game either maybe for 3 innings
I don’t know why people are jumping on Girardi. They’ve looked like this for years.
I will say one thing. I don’t miss Bobby Abreu too much, but I do miss the fact that he was an excellent, excellent 2 strike hitter.
They have pretty much negated everything from their huge win streak.
Giving away easy games and not even showing up for most of the game. But hey, we rallied against some no-name Twins relievers, so they can rally against anyone!!!!
“If I had to list guys who I wanted up there in a big spot, Jeter wouldn’t even be in the top 5 on the team.
I have more confidence in Brett Gardner or Cervelli than I do Jeter in a big spot. I certainly know Gardner will have a better AB. He owuld have made Lindstorm work.”
Really? Really? Wow.
How is it Girardi’s fault that this team has a glass jaw?
He isn’t going a good job by any stretch, but this isn’t his fault. The team is just going through the motions and there is nothing Joe can do but hope they snap out of it. He can’t hit or pitch for them.
Girardi said Hughes was going to be the 8th inning guy today. Because Bruney pitched Friday and was warmed up yesterday. He didn’t want to use Bruney three days in a row.
The only reason Brett Tomko is here is to be the long man. If he cant to that job then Cashman needs to find someone else.
This team has underachieved and was mentally weak before Girardi, they continue to be mentally weak and underachieve with Girardi.
Except those glass jaw teams under Torre didn’t have to deal with the Rays in the division. They pretty much had a WC safety net. Now that our margin for error is gone, our complacency is going to haunt us.
Time to lower the expectations.
The weather forecast for Tues-Thursday in Atalnta call for temperatures with a high between 91-93 degree. It is going to be freaking hot there. At least they are playing 3 night games.
Oh, boy, I cant spell. Atlanta*
so let’s some up the stute analysis from th ewizss on this site; the players are going thru the motions, they are not playing hard, and the usual other rubbish.
again I blame girardi and cash for Tomko, there is no reason he should be on the roster.
brainiacs look at his stats career wise, he is no good, old, and a choker, besides that he ain’t bad… Bruney hot couldn’t pitch the 8th, that is more crap…. I love how all these managers worry about the 8th and 9th innings, how about trying to get there with a lead!!!
oh my god the yanks are in a slump, no way the season is over.
morons 4 out, wildcard lead, grow some cajones………
yanks have injuries also.. there RF has played about 10 games, 1 set up guy about 5 terrible appearances, wang a disaster, etc…
injuries a non issue…
gardner needs to play moire also.. especially in NL games…
At least the Blue Jays play with heart
Outside of a few pies lats month, they have played with no passion at all
Matt Holliday would sure look nice right now to fix our slumping offense
Thanks Pete for keeping it real,no soppy syrup.
*Tell it like it is Pete*
Didn’t see the game, but was it a good pitch that Jeter swung at?
Jeter is a notoriously agressive hitter and he’s been very successful in his career.
Nobody would be complaining if he gets a double in the situation.
Ledger_Yankees twitter: Girardi filed protest after lineup mistake. Yep, could be a return trip to Miami. –Carig
==================
Huh? Return trip to Miami?
“Jeter brought us 4 rings.”
Get over it. That was in the last decade or precisely nine years back. Do not make it an A-Rod thing.
Jeter did not do his part the last to games to avoid the defeats. When every one else on the team team can be criticised, why can’t he be. He is part of the team that is underplaying right now.
For all of you that are trying to play manager and think you have a better idea how to use the bullpen than Joe, here’s one thing to think about.
During the season you don’t use your bullpen to just win today. You have to use it so you have someone each game.
If you don’t you wear it out like the last Joe did.
Can anyone else see that Kevin Long is a terrible hitting coach and needs to be fired, our offense is terrible, they didn’t hit the Nats or the Marlins at all come on. I understand not hitting Josh Johnson but the rest, its a complete joke.
Robertson looked great holding the game at 4-3 didn’t he?
This entire bullpen is erratic outside of Bruney and MO. They are not going to be perfect. We don’t have the Red Sox bullpen.
Tomko was not the reason we lost. When your starter goes 1.1 innings, you are kind of screwed.
“It worked for a while. Not anymore. They need to get the offense going sooner. This “let’s wait until after the 6th inning to start hitting” crap simply isn’t working.”
Wow, do you actually believe that’s the mindset they have
Do you really think that they start off each game saying to themselves that they aren’t going to hit until the 6th inning or later?
Wow, just wow.
“Didn’t see the game, but was it a good pitch that Jeter swung at?”
He probably thought he would get a get me over FB down the middle. Even though it was a FB it was bearing in on his hands.
“Girardi’s biggest mistake was taking CC out for something that wasn’t even that serious by all accounts.
He was accused of not being cautious with injuries, now he is going to be ultra cautious, even if it costs us games.”
And if CC were actually injured because Joe left him in you’d be singing an entirely different tune.
Raymagnetic, It was a first pitch get me over strike one….Others here toatlly disagree with me which is fine…However I say it was the best pitch Derek was going to see especially if he falls behind in the count….Derek hit hard right at short, in fact Pena running from first was not even half way from firstbase as he was forced out…..Yanks lost, so the tension is high here at The LoHud
YankeesWFAN(Sweeny) Twitter: Yanks playing game under protest. Wrong guy started 8th inn in LF for Marlins. If upheld game would resume from start of 8th inn.
al with the heart comments nice.
the only thing more simpleton and low cognitive skills then the playing with heart comments is the gritty gutty comments.
you think nick green played with any less desire when he was with the yanks or tampa then he is now for boston? the naswer is no, now he is just doing better.
AL watch some other disney movie where the guy scores the winning touchdown with 2 seconds to go, because you are a dreamer. who on the yanks is playing with no heart????
Cano because he swings at the first pitch all the time? He may be playing with little thought but they all try, and for idiots like you to constantly give the simpleton no heart, not trying pablam it gets old… Baeball gripping the bat to hard is a bad thing not a good thing ………
raymagnetic
94 fastball waist high strike inside.
another suggestion; fat, old, unathletic bloggers do not need to tell jeter when to take a pitch or not.
complain about cano’s lack of plate discipline his #’s give you reason to complain, Jeters do not. Look at Jeters #’s late, with RISP, etc. they are all very good..But hey don’t let logic get in the way of a emotional feel good little logic incorrect arguement…..
yea keeping CC in the game would be a smart move. heck 7 more years at milllions and millions of dollars does not take precedent over game 73 of season 1.
get a brain clowns…
And Cano has been hotter than Jeter but don’t let THAT logic get in the way.

It is funny that people that haven’t played pro ball seem to think they know better than one that is a HOF player.
yea cano is the guy you want up late in a game, sure……………………….
Thanks everyone for telling me about the pitch.
Pat M, I agree with you. It sucks that he made an out but I don’t have a problem with first pitch swinging if he swings at a strike.
“It is funny that people that haven’t played pro ball seem to think they know better than one that is a HOF player.”
They don’t know better than pro players who won’t make the HOF either. Maybe they shouldn’t be raked over the coals either.
Well stuart, numbers would say you would want Cano up but I guess we’re judging that by the “emotional feel good little logic incorrect argument”
I really miss our 2007 offense. That year the Yankees scored 968 runs and had a team BA of .290. Arod was unbelievably clutch in the late innings, and the whole offense just wore down pitchers.
Yanks 11th round pick, Left fielder Neil Medchill hit a home run in his first professional at bat for Staten Island, today. Congrats to the youngster. Big thrill for him.
Why swing at a belt high, middle-of-the plate fastball when you can instead start the count 0-1?
This Jeter kid is a flash in the pan. He’s got some skills but his baseball IQ is limited.
FlatCutter,
maybe you should be worried that the redsox “great closer” is in a jam every time he goes out to pitch. I mean even against the braves, he loads the bases and luckily gets to face Diaz other then Chipper. Also, he would consider playing for the yanks. Some true redsox, huh? and since mo’s cutter is so flat, please explain to me how he has over 30 career postseason saves
Derek Jeter has more baseball talent and knowledge in his left testicle than this entire board Combined, man how the cheers of him being a god change omg what is he doing when the team struggles. this is why people hate yankee fans, they come off as just what have you done to me lately no sense of gratitude for what players habe done for the team, he is a former rookie of the year, all star mvp, world series MVP, should have an overall MVP, was an instrumental cog in 4 world championships, he is a first ballot hall of famer and will have his place out in Monument park. Derek Jeter owe nothing to us becasue you know what he goes out there every single game and busts his butt, whether he is hurt, tired slumping, or hot. the man deserves gratitude he is a big reason the yankees became relevent again. If anyone says Derek Jeter doesnt understand how to play the game I tell you to go watch the flip play against Oakland becasue that is 150% baseball smart right there
i have been a yankees fan my whole live and this is the worst team i have ever seen in 20 years! good players, Worst team! really sad to see these guys play like this! i can say it breaks my heart! seriously!
Hey Mo’s flat cutter. I think you mistook this for the Boston Globe site again. And by the way, Varitek, Youklis and Pedroia are all still homos.
Buck Nasty
Well stated.
Jeter aint the culprit. Its Melky who threw home and was completely off, as always, and cost us a run. The reason the Yankees are losing is because they are making dumb mistakes on the field that costs them runs.
