"This is not the same team as last year. Not even close. People who think they are clearly haven’t been watching this team with their eyes closed."

June 22, 2008: YANKEES (40-35)

June 22, 2009: YANKEES (38-31)

Clearly I have been watching with my "eyes closed".

here's a thought -

I do apologize for mis-reading and mis-speaking. You say you react strongly to that. I reacted to being called naive and being told an attitude like mine is why the Yankees are the laughingstock of baseball.

It'd be hard to argue that anyone who posts here does not have passion for this team.

Those who get joy from this teams failure are called *trolls.* I thought you knew the difference..
Never do I call people names or make personal attacks on their intelligence, something that's rampant on this blog. But I be fierce when I'm misquoted.

I do read regularly, and am amazed at all the vitriol over an opinion some differ from them.I read people taking themselves way too serious. It's baseball show your passion for the team,it's ok.The Yankees need us to care.

here's a thought -

I'm not attacking, but I'm sorry you feel attacked. I re-read your original post - you are correct and I misspoke. I got defensive because you called me naive and said I'm burying my head in the sand because I dared to say it's a new day. What so-called "realists" need to understand about people like me is that just because we choose to focus on positives doesn't mean we don't see the negatives or have some doubts. And I was in a good mood this morning, too.

And if you read here regularly, you would start to wonder if there were in fact people here who get more joy out of being right about things not working out than they get when the Yankees win.

Steve B -

I agree. I'm almost feeling that there's a shoe hovering somewhere ready to drop. Giving him more rest is imperative. And I really wish the Yankees would stop leaving it up to the players to dictate when they rest. The Yankees are probably not the only team that does that, but I think it's foolish. For one thing, no player wants to be seen as a Carl Pavano. But I think we all tend to overestimate our capabilities at times, and athletes, with the competitive natures they have, are probably worse than most.

here's a thought -

So you don't cheer for them to get better? Let me understand. You prefer to get dragged down and give up on a team not even half way through the season.

Baseball is all about hope. It's all about getting through adversity. Wins occur when teams capitalize on other teams' mistakes, hits on pitchers' mistakes (for the most part). It is a game where a 70% failure rate is applauded as remarkable. Where if you win about 2/3 of your games you've had a fantastic season. It is full of hills and valleys. How a team survives the valleys and manages the hills is the story of a season.

That the Yankees as a franchise continue to have as much success as they do is unbelievable. Even last season, a season that left many people feeling dissatisfied, they were better than the majority of the teams in the majors. Even now, they have one of the better records in baseball.

Let the season play out. See what happens. Every year is a new story. This is not last year. I truly feel bad for people who can't seem to find enjoyment, who seem to find a cloud in every sunny sky. Perhaps I'm naive; or perhaps I've got some perspective.

"but I choose to go with the idea that the flaws can be addressed and/or overcome."

The flaw/issue I worry about most is Rodriguez's hip. I lean to believing that the doctor who performed the surgery and nearly tore his rotator cuff patting himself on the back gave the masses an overly optimistic forecast of what could be expected of Arod. Hips are such an incredibly tough injury to bounce back from. I'm not sure we see the best of him again until after the 2nd surgery this offseason.
