A.J. Burnett was good but Josh Johnson was better as the Marlins edged the Yankees 2-1

A-Rod pinch hit last night and will play today — at least that’s the plan. This notebook also has an update on Xavier Nady.

If the Yankees make a trade, here are some possible targets.

—————

A few other stories for you to be aware of …

Both Mark Feinsand of The Daily News and Tyler Kepner of the Times have pieces on Scott Proctor, the former Yankees reliever.

He admitted to alcoholism while a member of the Yankees and is now in AA trying to clean up his life. The Yankees have never said so on the record, but their decision to trade Proctor in 2007 was related in part to his off-field activities. Proctor is out for the rest of the season following Tommy John surgery and hopes to continue his career in 2010.

Meanwhile, according to the Palm Beach Post, A-Rod put aside his fatigue on Friday night and was out until 2:30 a.m. with Kate Hudson.

Good for Scott! He’s battling these real issues while people on the outside were worried about hits and runs given up.

  2. hiya jackson! June 21st, 2009 at 9:25 am

yeah, battling “real issues” that he caused himself with his binge drinking. no sympathy from me.

meanwhile, it’s nice to see how seriously Arod is taking baseball. fatigue, huh?

  3. Stephen June 21st, 2009 at 9:25 am

Arod. What a tool you are. God he is a cancer on this team. You’re one of the most recongizable figures in sport, and your out with a starlet til 230 am. Know wonder teamates hate this guy. The organization should just bench him anyway. He isn’t contributing much anyway!

  4. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 9:25 am

I had no idea that Proctor was an alcoholic. I guess being overused by Torre drove him to drink. I hope he makes it back.

  5. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 9:26 am

“Know wonder teamates hate this guy. The organization should just bench him anyway.”

Yeah, I can see the Steinbrenners benching someone they are paying 32mil dollars to. Makes sense.

  6. jim June 21st, 2009 at 9:28 am

God, I hate Arod. I know I’m not supposed to hate anyone, but he is just such an ass. He supposedly is fatigued, but not so fatigued that he can’t go out and attract attention to himself at all hours of the night when he has a game the next day and is supposed to play. And we have year after year after year after year of his crap.

    God I hate Arod….

  7. Lara08 June 21st, 2009 at 9:29 am

Oh please. You probably love Mickey Mantle.

  8. Stephen June 21st, 2009 at 9:31 am

I’m so tired of this ‘we’re paying him 32 million so we shouldn’t bench him crap’. So do whatever you want and we’ll play you. Smack him where it hurts. You given time off to rest and you’re out partying all night. He should be benched, fined, and or suspended. It’s total bull and as much as he loves playing, maybe these drastic measures will wake him up from being so tired.

  9. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC June 21st, 2009 at 9:31 am

    Oh brother

  10. rebecca June 21st, 2009 at 9:32 am

Okay, it’s just impossible to root for ARod. I don’t care if he hits a HR every day, there is something inherently wrong with the guy. His brain must be defective if he thinks carousing with Kate Hudson at 2:30 AM is going to go over well when he has been “resting” due to his exhaustion.

The guy really is a cancer on the team. It truly is the worst signing in Yankee history.

  11. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 9:34 am

“I’m so tired of this ‘we’re paying him 32 million so we shouldn’t bench him crap’.”

That’s probably because it’s not your 32mil dollars. No owner is going to pay a player that much money to ride the bench. And not for nothing, it’s the Yankees who didn’t follow the doctor’s plan and rest Alex every now and then like they were supposed to. The guy has major hip surgery and you play him 38 games straight? New York teams really don’t know how to handle injured players. The Mets are the worst, but we haven’t been too good either. Alex and CMW are prime examples of that.

  12. bru June 21st, 2009 at 9:34 am

the yankees would of been a much better team if we didn’t sign arod, sign a decent 3rd baseman & use the extra money to get a cf,dh,bullpen help.

he is 34 yrs old in july.how many more years of this?
    what a terrible contract.

  13. NYYanksFan June 21st, 2009 at 9:36 am

Was everyone else on the team tucked in bed getting their rest at 2 am or were they at Whiskey Blue in the W hotel in Ft. Lauderdale partying with Jeter?

  14. Hank June 21st, 2009 at 9:36 am

I’m sure Arod is putting more strain on his hip doing what he’s doing to Kate Hudson than playing baseball.

  15. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 9:36 am

“The guy really is a cancer on the team. ”

Really? That’s funny. I remember someone publishing the stats of how the Yankees play without A-Rod and it’s quite clear that he is extremely valuable to the team. They are way below .500 without him and way above it with him. Sounds like a good signing to me.

  16. Lara08 June 21st, 2009 at 9:39 am

Or they would have been a better team for a lot longer if they didn’t waste money on any number of players. I’m scared to add up the total cost of Johnson, Brown, Pavano, Igawa, Wright and thats just a few.

I believe there is an A-Rod/ Giambi curse: Its made this organization incapable of signing pitchers who could give a ROI.

    =========================================

Of course they were probably sleeping like little babies. None of them are “evil cancers” like Alex and staying out late. Monks, all of them except for Alex. ;)

Next thing you know, we will hear Alex kicks puppies

So, CC pitching today-can we please win somehow?

  18. Stephen June 21st, 2009 at 9:42 am

Last comment. How anyone could be a fan of this guy just leaves me at a loss for words. He’s selfish, unlikable, not a team player, liar, cheat, overrated baffon. He has never won a world series, never produced in the playoffs, and seems to choke 90 percent of the time when you need a big hit. I’m amazed at the 13 jerseys in the stadium! If your a fan…what can I say.

  19. Lara08 June 21st, 2009 at 9:43 am

“and seems to choke 90 percent of the time when you need a big hit.”

    *seems* is the key word.

    Hyperbole kills a good argument.

  20. Carl June 21st, 2009 at 9:44 am

So a grown man is not allowed to stay out until 2:30 am?

  21. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 9:44 am

    “Last comment.”

    Is that a promise?

He’s selfish, unlikable, not a team player, liar, cheat, overrated baffon.

    ===============================

So, I take it you are not a fan of Alex

  23. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 9:45 am

“So a grown man is not allowed to stay out until 2:30 am?”

I’m beginning to think that there are people around here who don’t even want Alex to breathe.

  24. Lara08 June 21st, 2009 at 9:47 am

Laura of course he shouldn’t breathe. He’s deadly. Do you remember hearing about the swine flu BEFORE A-Rod went to Mexico?

    Hmmmm

  25. murphydog June 21st, 2009 at 9:50 am

“yeah, battling “real issues” that he caused himself with his binge drinking. no sympathy from me.”

Proctor doesn’t want sympathy. He has owned up to his poor decisions and bad behavior and seeks to earn a second chance. That’s admirable. Now lets see if he can do it. Good luck to Scott.

As for A-Rod being out with his new girl…

He got two days off, mental health days as much as to recover from being just plumb tuckered out. He wasn’t suspended and confined under house arrest. So, he cuddles up with the new girl, does a little clubbing to recharge and change focus from the bad days at the plate, gets home a little late. Be human about it, for crying out loud and cut him some slack. He’s done a lot of dumb thing, but he’s never to my knowledge shown up hung over and too messed up to play.

  26. Aura June 21st, 2009 at 9:51 am

That’s probably because it’s not your 32mil dollars.
    _
You are right, I don’t pay his salary. At least not directly. I’d say most of us fans pay for Arod’s salary by not being able to afford seeing our favorite team play in person.

  27. murphydog June 21st, 2009 at 9:52 am

Jeez, I’m defending A-Rod. Strange days indeed.

  28. Carl June 21st, 2009 at 9:53 am

Because a new stadium has nothing to do with that! Its A-Rod! Oh wait I get it Alex built the stadium with his money!

  29. Lara08 June 21st, 2009 at 9:54 am

Don’t worry murphy. I used to think the same thing. Then I realized I’m not defending A-Rod I’m fighting back hypocrisy, double standards and just sheer lunacy.

It makes it easier for me to sleep at night thinking of it that way. :)

  30. Bo knows June 21st, 2009 at 9:55 am

Did anyone notice how much Posado’s game calling improved in the last few games after the big hoohaa about the very subject. It’s been outstanding. Sometimes you have to wack a guy between the running lights to get their attention. One wanders why he didn’t do it before but at least he’s bright enough to realize that there was a problem. He’s been going up and down the strike zone, doubling up on the same pitch etc. It’s been great.

  31. Aura June 21st, 2009 at 9:57 am

So a grown man is not allowed to stay out until 2:30 am?
    -

He can stay out to 2:30am but not at some hot spot surrounded by papparazi and his Almost Famous girlfriend. This guy needs a PR agent. When you are batting .200 and making 32 million a year you have to understand that partying to the early morning when you are sitting on the bench with “fatigue” just doesn’t look good. Mickey Mantle would stay out all night come to the park still drunk and go 4-4 and win the triple crown.

  32. Bo knows June 21st, 2009 at 9:57 am

What the hell is a baffon?

  33. Carl June 21st, 2009 at 9:58 am

    Bo knows,

Yeah it really has. I was a Po hater because lets be honest, he was lethargic with his game calling. It wasn’t like he couldn’t get better at it though. Hes looking really good.

  34. Aura June 21st, 2009 at 9:59 am

Did anyone notice how much Posado’s game calling improved in the last few games after the big hoohaa about the very subject. It’s been outstanding. Sometimes you have to wack a guy between the running lights to get their attention.
    -

so you are saying that Arod would probably be batting .100 without all the harassment we give him?

  35. Carl June 21st, 2009 at 10:02 am

    Aura,

You are acting like he sat out for 2 days just to go out with her. The man wanted to play! He came back early for the team! His Dr. told him he needs to sit out ever 5-6 days, but selfish old Alex said no so he could help the team! He may be batting 200 but he made everyone around him better. EVERYONE.

  36. Lara08 June 21st, 2009 at 10:02 am

Well isn’t that why fans boo Aura? To let the players know they aren’t playing acceptable baseball and they need to get better?

Or some silly crap like that.

Booing is the equivalent of wearing the same socks and standing on one foot with a Cheeto hanging out of your mouth. Fans always think they make a difference in the most asinine ways.

  37. Mo June 21st, 2009 at 10:04 am

Seriously? Posada hasn’t changed his game calling at all. The pitchers are just pitching better. Some people here need to just admit they were wrong rather than interpreting new evidence that doesn’t support them in a backwards fashion.

  38. Joe from Long Island June 21st, 2009 at 10:07 am

Night games end after 11PM most nights, so players are used to getting out of the park after midnight. Add in all the times they arrive in town in the pre-dawn hours due to travel, and 2:30 is no big thing. Kind of like teenagers and 20-somethings staying out late.

So, he went to his Miami pad with Kate Hudson. Two mental health days are just that, days to relax. At least he was home.

  39. Cliff June 21st, 2009 at 10:10 am

This is absolutely absurd. NEWSFLASH! Athletes go out!! Stop acting all holy. Everyone here talks about how perfect the 90′s teams were but no on cares that Boggs pretty much admitted to drinking 30+ beers on a cross country flight.

  40. Bo knows June 21st, 2009 at 10:12 am

Yep, Posado has always driven me crazy with those sequences put down one finger to low and outside. I’ve never understood how people could find low scoring games boring. There’s a whole story going on at every at bat. You just have to pay attention Watch the game and check out Game day at the end of the inning. It’s amazing that these people with that talent and experience do stupid things and expect good results.

It’s basic – don’t overswing on junkballers. What are the Yankees famous for? They overswing on junkballers. The easy HRs at Yankee Stadium have really hurt this team. I don’t know whether it’s the juiced ball or the wind effect but the Yankees looked really stupid batting against Washington’s collection of soft tossers.

  41. Horatio June 21st, 2009 at 10:13 am

Perhaps Stephen simply misspelled “buffon”, referring to the French naturalist Georges-Louis LeClerc, Comte de Buffon. Buffon compiled the mammoth Histoire Naturelle, which was an attempt to centralize all the facts known regarding the natural world at the time (in the mid to late 1700s). Rodriguez has done some pretty spectacular things in his long and accomplished career as well, so while it’s sort of a weird analogy (as Buffon is no longer widely known in 2009), I can kind of see where he was going. High praise indeed!

  42. Me June 21st, 2009 at 10:17 am

The criticism for Alex is because he’s too arrogant to realize he should be more aware of his actions. He knew this would draw negative attention to him but all he cares about is GETTING the attention. Positive or negative, the story always has to be about HIM.

  43. Carl June 21st, 2009 at 10:18 am

So the Yankees have to see Hanson, Kawakami, and Lowe in ATL.

  44. SJ44 June 21st, 2009 at 10:19 am

Man, the children have taken over today.

    NYYanksFan said it best.

Children, 2 hours after games, professional baseball players go out. Just a fact of life.

I know stories like this give the children a chance to bang on Arod but, he wasn’t the only guy out Friday night or last night.

Come on folks, get a grip. Save the hate for the game threads.

  45. Bo knows June 21st, 2009 at 10:23 am

    Mo

Yes Posado has changed his game calling. To the point where it’s noticeable. I’m not going to go into “Is so, Is not”. Go to Scoreboard and pull up some Gamedays for the last few days and then go back a couple of weeks. I didn’t yell at the TV screen once last night. That’s where I noticed it and it wasn’t until after the game. Normally I’m good for two or three “You idjit” a game. People just don’t understand how important a catcher is.

  46. SJ44 June 21st, 2009 at 10:24 am

Do you clowns actually believe Posada has gotten “better” because of your whining about him? Lol

That’s funnier than the Arod hate this morning.

Do your parents know you are using drugs?

  47. Betsy June 21st, 2009 at 10:25 am

Wow, who CARES if Alex was out? Pete, why did you have to make a point of telling us this? Not everything that is reported is news……That’s all I have to say on this. He’s ALLOWED to do what he wants after games, like every other player.

Anyway, moving on…………I suspected the Yankees weren’t going to win yesterday, but boy that was a tough loss. They had their chances and they absolutely failed to come through……that’s the story of the Yankees for the last few years. At some point, they all emerge from their collective slump, but the fact is that this team is not built for the playoffs……not offensively (and defensively, they are no great shakes. Melky’s non-catch was bad and Damon’s was pathetic).

AJ pitched very well – and all those who proclaimed that he just can not work with Jorge look like fools. He misspoke when he complimented Cervelli last week – there’s no way that he meant to disrespect Posada – and I’m glad he said what he said about Po last night. He lso gave the guy an appreciate tap. I think AJ was aware that poor Jorge was under the gun and wanted to be sure that the catcher got his props – good for AJ.

  48. Stultus Magnus June 21st, 2009 at 10:26 am

    Out until 2:30? Whoah, what a non-story.

Do any of you guys go to bed 3 hours after you leave work? If I worked from whenever they get to the ballpark until 11:30 or whenever they leave the ballpark, I’d probably be out until 5am every night.

Who cares that A-Rod was out until 2:30?? Ballplayers are on a different schedule. Games don’t start at 9am.

  49. YankeesLuv June 21st, 2009 at 10:26 am

LOL at all the outrage on Alex. Can’t imagine the blog if Babe was playing today. If some of ya’ll think he was the only one out last night you are living in Care Bear world, a happy place indeed. When I saw this story in the papers today I knew Pete would mention it, he can’t resist.

  50. HA! June 21st, 2009 at 10:26 am

Shame on A-Rod for being overplayed after having major surgery, and then having the gall to go out for an evening. Even though baseball activities are different from going out, he should just be locked away in a closet and only let out to play the games.

How could he be allowed to have a life outside of baseball?

The President should be looking to cap his activities!

Congress should pass a law that makes it illegal for him to become fatigued!

The idiotic “fans” should decide all aspects of A-Rod’s life.

  51. SJ44 June 21st, 2009 at 10:26 am

    Posada hasn’t changed ANYTHING.

Stop posting nonsense to support dumb positions.

He hasn’t changed a thing. The results are better and now some of you want to change your stories.

    What nonsense.

  52. Betsy June 21st, 2009 at 10:28 am

I’m just reading the previous thread now – did AJ throw change-ups last night? If so, that’s very encouraging.

  53. Tom in N.J June 21st, 2009 at 10:29 am

Or, the pitchers are just pitching better.

  54. NYYanksFan June 21st, 2009 at 10:30 am

“Do you clowns actually believe Posada has gotten “better” because of your whining about him?”

Whining only works sometimes but booing is always effective in motivating a player to perform “better”.

  55. Bo knows June 21st, 2009 at 10:32 am

    Horatio

A most learned discourse. I am most impressed, especially on a Sunday morning. A true Googlism. Actually I find “A Rod the Baffon” more intriguing. Out of the mouths of babes and so on.

  56. tampayank June 21st, 2009 at 10:35 am

the holy crowd needs to chill out, some of you would be shocked to know what some of your favorite players do away from the ballpark(Jeter being one but I won’t go into details, heard some stuff when he’s in town)…their lives are just not chronicled like AROD’s w/ paps following everywhere..2am is early for Sobe….good job by AJ despite the loss…hopefully there starts to be some consitency w/ this rotation

  57. Giuseppe Franco June 21st, 2009 at 10:38 am

    Nice going, Pete.

More cheap shots at A-Rod to get the malcontents worked up and in a tizzy.

And you get defensive when people call you out on that crap.

  58. Mo June 21st, 2009 at 10:39 am

Posada has not changed one thing. When the pitchers execute the pitches, he looks good, when they dont, he looks bad. It is that simple.

  59. RhapsodyInBlue June 21st, 2009 at 10:40 am

A five oclock game today for the Yankees.

One would think that Alex is under house arrest wearing an ankle braclet.

  60. Stultus Magnus June 21st, 2009 at 10:44 am

I’m reminded of a quote from a crappy man v. wilderness movie: “Never feel sorry for a man who owns a plane,” but I have to say that A-Rod rarely catches a break.

2:30am, and now some morons are upset about it.

What amounted to dinner and a couple drinks with his girlfriend after work is now national news.

  61. Giuseppe Franco June 21st, 2009 at 10:44 am

Burnett himself said in the postgame that he didn’t shake off Posada all night.

So how did anything change from Posada’s perspective when it was Burnett who went along with Posada’s signs and not vice versa?

  62. Bo knows June 21st, 2009 at 10:46 am

Baseball is all about adjustment and players adjust all the time. This isn’t about robots. Why do players guess on pitches? If a player knows what’s coming he’ll hit it. Again I’m not going to go “Is, Is not”. There is an art to game calling. Talk to any old catcher that knows his craft.

    ===========================================================

    Bru,

What players that play LF, CF and RP did we not sign because we were financially strained due to the money we gave ARod? Can you please name them because I do not recall any FA’s being out there which we did not go after for monetary reasons.

Hate ARod – that’s fine. But try to be a little rational. His contract is not the reason we didn’t sign anyone. We didn’t sign anyone because there was no one worth signing that was better than what we had.

  64. Mo June 21st, 2009 at 10:53 am

Bo, why not bring some evidence, instead of claiming that something is there that no one else can see?

  65. Baseball Fab June 21st, 2009 at 10:55 am

I remember when Ramirez was ” sick” and didn’t play against the Yankees, and met Enrique Wilson for drinks in the hotel bar where Manny LIVED, and the Boston press went nuts, and so did most of us. And rightfully so.

The REALITY is if you are so fatigued that you are not performing well, regardless of whether you were told by your owners not to play as you were fatigued, AND you know you are a lightening rod for controversy, it behooves you to stay out of the public clubs/spotlight.

Anyone who argues otherwise is being naive at best and a homer at worst.

Arod if he had half a brain for the way things look and how his own actions impact on him and the team, should have had his private yacht, helicopter,Maybach, pick him at at the park, and take him to his billion dollar home, hotel, etc, and stay in with his gal and hang all night, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO Arod has to be seen.

    he is a total doooshbag.

  66. Jake June 21st, 2009 at 10:56 am

So wait, most of you would shun Kate Hudson, and go to bed early because you are tired? Time to get out of the basement boys. When someone like Kate Hudson says she wants to party with you, I don’t care if you are on crutches, you run after that!!!

Saying all that, I really wish we could trade A-Rod, but his contract is just too big for anyone to take him. If the idiot hadn’t opted out, next year would’ve been his last year, and we would’ve been in great shape. Damn you Scott Boras.

  67. Erica - newly OPPC June 21st, 2009 at 10:58 am

    You know in retrospect-

The baseball bonfire Proctor did while with the Yankees has “wasn’t sober” written all over it

  68. PruBelongs June 21st, 2009 at 10:58 am

When you don’t have to wake up until noon you can stay up a little later. And nowhere does it say he was drinking anything.

  69. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 10:59 am

Oh, I see. So A-Rod, who is extremely wealthy, shouldn’t take advantage of his wealth and live life to the fullest because it may upset those who don’t have as much money. Really? Instead, he should live like he makes 50K a year. Can’t use the Maybach. Can’t fly the private jet. Can’t stay in the best hotels. Some of the people who post on here are delusional. If you had the kind of cash that Alex does, you’d be doing the same thing.

  70. migames June 21st, 2009 at 10:59 am

i agree with SJ re: Arod, but the biggest child is the one posting this crap on this website to get more hits and to fit his argument that arod is the worst thing to ever happen to mankind

Anyone who thinks even if Alex never spoke another word and never left his house he wouldn’t still be the subject of media speculation is the real naive one.

“If the idiot hadn’t opted out, next year would’ve been his last year, and we would’ve been in great shape.”

Your comment implies that with Alex, we are in bad shape. Look at the stats, people. The team plays better when he’s in the lineup. I love how people conveniently ignore the facts when the truth is hard for them to take.

  75. Yankee Trader June 21st, 2009 at 11:05 am

The real concern for Yankee fans should be how can this 209M team play better, and what lineup gives you the best chance to win.

Damon says he’s been a “butcher” lately in the outfield.

    Matsui can only DH.

Posada should DH a few times a week.

A-Rod is “fatuiged.” Give him a break. He’s coming off hip surgery, he’s single and a known “sexaholic.” Plus you’re asking him to play 3rd base, when he should be recuperating and play DH, a few times a week to try and keep his anemic bat in the lineup.

In fact many in this aging lineup should not be asked to play the field night in and night out, and should get a “blow” by DH’ing, having just witnessed the increase in game or inning ending double plays and inability to lay down bunts.

The simple fact remains-no matter what the team salary is, on any given night even the lowliest and poorest teams can beat us, not to mention go to the playoffs and possibly win a WS. When you’re an employee and you’re guaranteed a contract and make more than your manager and GM, you can do about anything you want that fits within the rules of your often “ill-defined” contract.

Am I being unfair to expect more from our team, even though they have the fifth best record in the majors?

Am I worried, that even if they manage to get healthy, that this team is still beatable in a 5 game playoff series?

  76. Giuseppe Franco June 21st, 2009 at 11:06 am

This team was 13-15 without A-Rod through May 8th and they immediately went on a 3-week tear the night he returned and hit the homer off Guthrie.

It’s not a coincidence this team took off when he came back.

    2009:

    Yanks w/out A-Rod: 14-16

    Yanks w/ A-Rod: 24-14

    2008:

    Yanks w/out A-Rod: 9-14

    Yanks w/ A-Rod: 80-53

    Doreen,

Great pics! The thing I take away the most about the new stadium is that it really is an homage to the history of the team. It’s almost like a museum. I hope I get to go soon.

  78. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! June 21st, 2009 at 11:08 am

Thanks for posting those stats, Giuseppe. Maybe it will quiet all of the numb nuts who say that Alex is a cancer and hurts the team.

  79. Giuseppe Franco June 21st, 2009 at 11:09 am

Every team is beatable in a five-game series.

That why the best teams hate playing them. It’s when they are the most susceptible to getting upset by a lesser team.

The longer a series goes, the more likely the better and deeper team wins.

  80. Bo knows June 21st, 2009 at 11:12 am

    Okay on Posado

A while back he called a sequence of fastballs low and outside five times in a row. The next hitter was sitting low and outside and hit it hard. There were comments made on that in this blog. That is one example. There is a number of us that attend a neighbors garage and watch ballgames at different times during the week. Good times. Among the attendees are ex players and coaches. Someone actually went back to Game day and checked on what was called and when at various games over a period of time. The Posado debate has been going on a long time with us with pro and con debate. In other words good baseball talk. So I mentioned it here. This is not to convince anybody or convert anyone. And anytime people start yelling, there is a reason.

  81. Baseball Fab June 21st, 2009 at 11:13 am

    AGHHH you miss the point.
Sure free country, has the right to go out, blah blah blah.

Terrell Owens always needs to behave due to his history real or perceiGrow ved.

    Same Pac Man Jones.

    Same Manny.

    Same Mike Tyson.

    Same Steve Howe

    Same Milton Bradley.

    See the pattern?

If you are a Human, who works for SOMEONE ELSE, and in the course of your employment you have been involved in controversy, it is incumbent on YOU to bend over backwards to avoid ANY appearance of impropriety.ESPECIALLY if you work in the public eye EG Politician,Ballplayer, etc.

Hell, when you were 16 and got caught speeding, or smoking dope, or with your girlfriend in bed etc, even YOU had the sense to soft foot it for awhile, it is a sign of basic human intelligence.

    Arod lacks that.

Does that make him a bad person? Come on, of course not, but does that leave him open for these attacks ? Yes.

And how sophomoric to blame Pete for this. The article was written in a Miami newspaper, and has already been covered by media all over the country. So of course Pete should not report it, because it casts a Yankee in a self created unfavorable light?

    Grow up kiddies.

  86. Giuseppe Franco June 21st, 2009 at 11:20 am

The difference between all of those other people and A-Rod is that he’s never had any legal issues or engaged in any criminal acts.

Does he make peculiar decisions and say goofy things?

Sure he does. But that ain’t a crime.

I don’t care what Jeter does with Minka Kelly either. It’s really not a story – just tabloid fodder to get retards in an uproar.

  87. Fran (the original) and OPPC member June 21st, 2009 at 11:20 am

Alex was told to abstain from baseball activities for 2 days. That doesn’t mean he can’t go out for dinner or a drink after the game. To me this is a non-story, but I guess the Flordia papers had to write something about Alex.

BaseballFan, I see what you point is. I just happen to disagree with it. I’ve had this issue, not just with A-Rod but with celebrities as well. Just because your job involves appearing before the public doesn’t mean that the public is entitled to enter your private life or space. For some reason, people believe that they are entitled to know who Brad Pitt is sleeping with or when celebrities go to the grocery store or to the doctor. Frankly, that’s none of our damn business. Brad Pitt’s job is to act in movies and do a good job entertaining me. That’s all he owes me. Alex’s job is to play defense and hit the ball as hard and as far as he can. That doesn’t mean that I can pass judgment on what he’s doing outside of the game. So he went out last night. Big frakin’ deal. The game doesn’t start until 5pm today. He’s got plenty of time to get himself prepared. The media tries to act like Alex is the only one doing these things when in fact, I bet that most of the players were enjoying Miami’s nightlife last night. But when Alex does it, people want to act like it’s the end of the world.

As much as I like having Alex as a Yankee, I really wish that he would have signed somewhere else; for his sake. No one should have to live under such scrutiny.

  95. Anthony Murillo June 21st, 2009 at 11:27 am

Some of you people are beyond stupid. This season, we’ve seen the following:

“We can live with out A-Rod for a couple of months! Let’s try Cody Ransom, let’s see what he’s got! We don’t need an all-star at every position in order to win and A-Rod is a cancer to his team! Go Ransom…”

Couple of weeks after the season:

“Pete! When is A-Rod coming back!?!?! We can’t live with Cody Ransom at third base! What’s the update, Pete, is he going to return soon! We can’t, Pete, we can’t live without A-Rod in the line up!”

A-Rod returns, hits a couple of HUGE homeruns:

“A-ROD IS BACK BABY! YES! The Yankees are looking GREAT since he returned! Yes we’re going to be an amazing team this year! I love Alex Rodriguez!”

A-Rod struggles (OMG HOW DARE HE!):

“BOOOOOOO! I hate A-Rod, he sucks! How dare he go out with Kate Hudson, he’s such a CANCER on this team! He’s such a tool, ugh I hate him. I can’t root for him anymore!”

Anddddddddd what’s going to be funny is…if A-Rod ever goes off on a tare, most of you will flip flop yet again and start your “A-Rod is the man” crap. Seriously stop your whining (and stop being a bunch of assess) and just shut up.

I was drooling over him going to LAA where they dont eat people alive for silly crap. If you’re going to grill someone save it for real stuff (that way I can be on board because I criticize with the best of them, trust me).

And he probably would have done there, what NYY fans have been killing him for not doing, getting it done in the postseason.

And he would have probably done it to the Yanks LOL.

  98. jennifer June 21st, 2009 at 11:30 am

Fran loved it. Felt very rushed in the museum and locker room. It was interesting looking at the players lockers.

Nick’s collage was hysterical. Couldn’t take a picture of it though. Kim Jones said she asked for and was given permission by Nick to take a picture when it was complete. He also had a picture of him and Polly (?) the lady who has cancer hanging in his locker thought that was very sweet. The two nut cases LOL are locked next to each other (nick and damon).

The locker room wasn’t as big as I imagined it. Don’t get me wrong it was BIG, but the way it was described I thought it was gigantic.

I didn’t think Monument Park was a dungeon like it was described. They left a lot of open space if/when they have more retired numbers. The walkway to get there was very narrow (major complaint).

“The locker room wasn’t as big as I imagined it. Don’t get me wrong it was BIG, but the way it was described I thought it was gigantic.”

But if the players say that it’s huge, imagine how small the old one must have been.

  103. Giuseppe Franco June 21st, 2009 at 11:32 am

That pretty much sums it up, Anthony. A fine rundown of the last three months.

But that’s what Yankee fans do, especially the buffoons who boo at the Stadium.

They are the first to put you in the Hall of Fame when you get a big hit and the first to kick you in the stomach with steel-toed boots when he strikeout with the bases loaded to end the game.

That’s what kind of fans the Yanks unintentionally created when they won four rings in five years.

  104. jennifer June 21st, 2009 at 11:32 am

Laura- LOL as soon as I got to the stadium. I was like what in the world was I thinking. It was just a cotton dress not fancy. But I realized how nuts I was.

  105. Fran (the original) and OPPC member June 21st, 2009 at 11:34 am

    Jennifer,

Thanks for the description and the pictures. Looking at your pictures and Doreen’s has really given me a desire to take the tour. But I think it’s better to go when the Yanks are on the road so you can go into the lockerroom right?

“Just because your job involves appearing before the public doesn’t mean that the public is entitled to enter your private life or space.”

Laure, I actually agree with you, in a perfect world this would be the case. BUT once you are a “public” figure, you lose a lot of this privelege of assumed privacy.

It is a double edged sword, you get

-idolized,lionized,worshiped, and adulation at a far greater measure than makes sense. is just, or even is healthy, and the flip side of that is you become

-vilified,demonized, and humiliated also when you do not feed the designs and needs of your audience/masters.

My best guess is these “spotlight” people truly are there for our entertainment. Teachers, firemen, etc get paid peanuts for a much more important job, but as they say no one pays to watch them work.

So like the lions and Christians to the Romans, we pay a fortune in movie tickets, baseball tickets, Cable TV etc, to put other humans on a pedestle, and dance, sing and play for our diversionary pyschic relief.

Once you accept the millions that come as being one of those very rare humans that can ascend to the parthenon, you then have to play by the rules that have been set by the huddled masses.

The players perform for US, if there were no US there would be no THEM, and we are a very fickle and cruel master.

  109. jennifer June 21st, 2009 at 11:42 am

Fran- Yes I recommend going when the Yankees are away.

One place we didn’t go that I thought they take us is the press box.

The tour is too short. But I guess there is such high demand that they have tours every 20 minutes. I felt very rushed the entire tour, didn’t get to really soak in the clubhouse to so consumed with looking at Nicks locker. lol

The batting cages were really cool to look at. They are literally steps from the dugout.

  110. Lara08 June 21st, 2009 at 11:42 am

“The players perform for US, if there were no US there would be no THEM, and we are a very fickle and cruel master.”

  111. NYYanksFan June 21st, 2009 at 11:43 am

A month ago (before A-Rod knew he’d be hitting .220 and would be benched on Friday night) a friend of his, who owns the lounge he was at Friday night, planned a private party after the game to celebrate the Yankees playing the Marlins and Alex being back in Miami.

Dancing the night away with Kate Hudson makes for a better story but it may not be as accurate as what happened.

  112. Boston Dave - OPPC June 21st, 2009 at 11:44 am

    Pete,

In your ‘trade possibilities’ article, you list Jose Valverde as a “former closer”.

He is the closer right now for Houston.

He’s missed time with an injury but he’s still the 9th inning guy when healthy. Hawkins will step out of that role (probably the next save chance that comes up).

    Just an FYI…

  113. tim boat June 21st, 2009 at 11:45 am

“Did anyone notice how much Posado’s game calling improved in the last few games after the big hoohaa about the very subject. It’s been outstanding. Sometimes you have to wack a guy between the running lights to get their attention. One wanders why he didn’t do it before but at least he’s bright enough to realize that there was a problem. He’s been going up and down the strike zone, doubling up on the same pitch etc. It’s been great.”

  123. JohnBlacksox (24+1) June 21st, 2009 at 12:01 pm

The issue isn’t that ballplayers go out and party. The issue is that in the middle of a firestorm about missing two games for “fatigue”, this bonehead stays out all night at a public club with a celebrity.

By the way, great job by Pete reporting that his doctors prescribed 5+ days off, and the Yankees gave him zero days off. That’s just incredibly stupid of Girardi, Cashman, front office, whoever makes decisions in this organization. Evidently, no one makes decisions in this organization anymore.

None of that is ARod’s fault, but once again, this guy has absolutely no common sense. He’s “bone tired”, can’t play baseball, way too tired, exhausted even, but then he’s seen out partying all night on South Beach.

    Holy crap. Hilarious.

  124. Erica - newly OPPC June 21st, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Pete wasn’t the one who “cracked” this story. He wasn’t following A-Rod aroudn Miami at 2am. This story was broken by the same Floria papers who ripped A-Rod to shreads yesterday for not playing in the previous game and were obviously trying to settle some kind of score.

This “story” is all over every news paper and Yahoo. (I haven’t checked espn, but I would wager that its there too). Pete was merely repeating it because its in the news and Yankee related. And this is a Yankee forum. If Pete didn’t carry this story when its in every other major news outlet in the country- he would not be doing his job.
