The slumping Yankees lost again as the Marlins held off a late rally. That’s eight losses in the last 12 games.
A.J. Burnett started his suspension yesterday. This notebook also has updates on Joe Girardi’s protest, Johnny Damon’s injury and the big crowds at Land Shark Stadium.

Time for a new manager? It’s getting close…

From the way people were talking about this guy the last two days you would have that he was the second coming

And key errors. I wouldn’t go so far as to say they’re falling apart defensively – one error doesn’t mean sloppy play in general. But the two errors the last two days were extremely costly. They probably win both games without them.

This club wasn’t supposed to be a strong defensive unit heading into the season and it’s been that way for quite a few years. Average to perhaps slightly above average defense is pretty much their ceiling.
Sure, they have improved from last season with the additions of Teixeira and Swisher/Nady over Giambi and Abreu.
But they ranked a paltry 26th in MLB last year with balls in play turned into outs.
The errorless streak back in May was more of a fluke than an accurate portrayal of their defensive prowess as a unit.
The defense rode a blistering hot streak for about three weeks just like the rotation and offense rode hot streaks of their own when this team was clicking on all cylinders.
He has been suspect all year. Pena will make a great manager. He will fire these guys up.

Learning how to bury your head from what’s actually going on is naive. The sun will come out tomorrow.
This narrative is why the Yankees are the laughingstock of baseball.
As much as anyone I want the YANKEES TO SUCCEED but the team isn’t playing up to it’s potential. If only we knew why.

Oh, please. Talk about hyperbole.
You are much closer to being the laughing stock of this board than the Yanks being a laughing stock around baseball.
Every team is flawed and the Yanks are no exception. But they have fewer flaws than everyone else in the AL not named Boston.
“But they ranked a paltry 26th in MLB last year with balls in play turned into outs.”
Really? Yikes!
Good thing they strike a lot of guys out. Be interesting to see how that breaks down. Don’t think a whole lot has gone wrong on the right side of the infield. Suppose the combination of Cody “The Butcher” Ranson and a limited Arod probably doesn’t help the left side all that much and the outfield defense has been pretty iffy all season.
