A New York Yankees blog by Sam Borden, Chad Jennings and the staff of The Journal News

Your attention please

The LoHud Yankees Blog is going off-line from noon-1 p.m. today for maintenance.

I’m told by Jeff the Tech Guy that we’re upgrading the software and that’s a good thing. I’ve learned not to argue with Jeff as he is usually right about these things.

In the hour that we’re away, I urge you to sit quietly at the office and meditate. Or perhaps you could do some work. Just come back later, we’ll be here.

Thanks.

ha ha that’s great….is he going to come back at all this season or is he done for good?

I guess I come off as a troll sometimes or someone who doesn’t like the game, but that is the furthest thing from the truth. I love the game – I think baseball is a perfect sport. I eat up it’s history and I had about the best time imaginable at the HOF. I love the Yankees – I love the individual players as well; I could never just root for the uniform – I’m just too emotional. I enjoy rooting for the people who wear the pinstripes. I’m just a pessimist. I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, so I will try not to post much when I’m feeling particularly negative. However, I don’t think it’s being trollish to say the Yankees are the same team they’ve been or that they aren’t as good as the Sox or that they have now blown much of their WC cushion. No matter how many comebacks they’ve had this year, how is it not worrisome that they continually put themselves in that position?

On another note, great news about Ian. It would be wonderful if he could pitch again this year.

  11. SJ44

    Tom,

He will only be in State College thru Wednesday. He goes to the Johnny Bench Award dinner fo 3 days and will be in Charleston, WVA (full season A ball) for the rest of the season.

The SAL is in their All Star Break right now which is why he is in State College for a few days.

  12. SJ44

    Betsy,

It’s obvious you love baseball and the Yankees.

You just need to better handle the ups and downs of a long season.

Sambuca usually works for me. lol

The Yankees are a good team going thru a rough patch right now.

  13. Cash is King

    Betsy/Rocketbooster,
Your love for the Yankees is unquestionable, but you need to keep your emotions better in check during the long baseball season, otherwise, you’ll blow a gasket.

  14. dennis-costanza

    Betsy.

I have never read a post from you that I did not think you did not love the game. Your passion is clear and so is your honesty.

  15. Tom in N.J

Well that’s a bummer, SJ. Well, a bummer for me at least…

Too bad that the Pirates Sally League team already swung by Lakewood in May.

  16. Nick in SF in Dallas

If we don’t all make it to the other side, it’s been good knowing you all. Godspeed.

  18. Betsy

SJ, yes..I need a drink AND a little perspective. I used to call myself the Paul O’Neill of fans – expecting way too much of human beings.

Dennis, thanks – I appreciate your comments. I also appreciate the fact that you (and Ray) come to this blog and engage in intelligent back and forth re: Sox and Yanks. I enjoy chatting with fans of other teams, but unfortunately Sox/Yanks talk usually ends up degenerating into some sort of catfight. FYI – I love Boston. I hate the Sox, but the city itself is fantastic.

  19. Guy Incognito

    @TampaYank

Sadly I believe you have heard the last of Bob Sheppard at the Stadium. He’s 98 years old or something like that and if he wasn’t able to announce at the beginning of the season it’s doubtful he’ll be back at all. He “retired” on top, though.

Fittingly, the Yankees’ PA announcer is the best in history.

  20. Joekuh - Wang @

SJ, quick question. Has anyone come up to your nephew and said they know of him because of his uncle on this blog?

  21. Tom in N.J

Is this some sort of Blog Rapture, where only those who were good are able to move on?

  22. joe-seppi

12:07 not offline yet. Or am I just magical?

Betsy, I don’t anybody with a bit of common sense would take you as a troll. Perhaps a little too emotional to deal with ups and downs during an imperfect season. That’s not bad, but, it sure fires up the ulcers and ruins a good beer. I don’t think anybody has put you in same category with the idiots, either. No problem with getting annoyed by a game, but, it’s best to let the annoyance pass after about 10 minutes. Kick your husband or throw a foam brick at the TV. I stress the “foam” part of brick. Otherwise, you’ll go broke buying 65 TVs a year. Don’t throw shoes, either. You’ll look rather silly going to the store with one shoe.

    This back to working?

  28. Tom in N.J.

    Hello?

  29. john

looks the same to me. what changed?

  30. John

Wow, the sight looks totally different! Such increased functionality!

Sorry, being a wiseass after another un-clutch DJ performance.

  31. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint

    Hi

  32. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Wow, that U.S. Open was really disappointing and anticlimactic.

  33. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

By the way, what in the world was Jeet doing during that at bat?

  34. Bronx 77

“Wow, the sight looks totally different! Such increased functionality!

Sorry, being a wiseass after another un-clutch DJ performance.”

    LOL

  35. Bryan

So the Yankees starters are awful

    Their bullpen is terrible

    And they don’t hit

three aspects of a great team right there

  36. NYY626

Guys, Jete said it was a good pitch to swing at. He said if he could change anything, it would be the end result, not not swinging at the first pitch. Build a bridge and get over it. Its a new day! Plus, its 1:3oish and ive yet to see any rain in NYC today….

  37. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Look on the brightside. The league may uphold the protest, and then we’ll have another shot at the game!

And maybe A.J. Burnett will go totally w/o injury for the enitire year.

    It could happen, right?

  38. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Bryan-Actually, the starters and bullpen have done pretty well. We’re just in a hitting slump.

Actually, I don’t even blame yesterday’s loss on the hitters. We scored five runs. That loss can be traced back directly to Tomko.

  39. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

    Too many actuallys.

  40. Cash is King

Anybody read the Red Sox butt-kissing article by Davidoff today?

  41. Doreen - Stadium Tour Pix

    Hello all.

  42. Mike

    Agree Bryan.

We’re in a deep funk right now.

  43. m

There was a change for me. My personal info got erased. Anyone else?

How cool is this blog? I’m pretty sure that is the only blog in history that had an update on how the maintenance was going.

Pete, next time do it in the middle of the night? After all that’s when all the…come out.

  44. Bryan

The Yankees currently rank 25th out of 30 in team ERA at 4.64

    That is good pitching right???

The closer to 30 the better?

    Nice try

  45. SJ44

Selective use of stats. Since May 1, the pitching has been much better.

They are in a slump. It happens to every team in the league.

If you think the team is so awful, why be upset? They are just fulfilling your expectations.

  46. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

    Bryan-You said pitching FUNK.

Lately we’ve done well. Past 6 games we’ve held the opposition to 3 runs or less five times. The one time we didn’t our Ace went down in the second inning.

    To quote you, nice try.

No where in my posts did I say funk

    Thank you very much

  49. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

    Thank you SJ.

I’m sorry. Bryan did not say funk. Mike did. Anyway, the point is the same.

  50. gayle

    SJ and everyone–

Saw that JOnathan Mayo interviewed your nephew and said the piece will be up on MLB.com shortly. Looking forward to reading it.

  51. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

    Bryan-See post below.

  52. tampayank

    @ Guy Incognito

yeah he’s had a great run for so long but I don’t like his replacement(don’t know his name) trying to copy his tone, the Yanks need someone w/ their own style not trying to be Bob

  53. Matty C

    Bryan is right

Full year stats are selective use of stats?? Since when

So if the Yankees miss the playoffs we can say but they had the best record in September!!!

    You guys are too much

  54. Hokiehill

Yeah, Jeter said if he could do it over again he would do it the same…I trust his judgement over his abilities in that situation over anyone here, or in the media. tough stretch going here but we have the talent to pull through it. one game where we click on all cylinders would be a nice way to spark a winning streak…

  55. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Matty C-But they’ve been doing much better.

  56. Kernal

    Matty C,

We did have the best record in September in the league last year. Funny how they played their best baseball of the year when the pressure was off.

  57. raymagnetic

    Test

  58. Boston Dave

Looks like Ian Kennedy will be back in AAA shortly to start rehabbing. Good luck IPK…

  59. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Um, the pressure is NOt off.

We’re very much in it and better pitching kind of helps.

  60. Scott

When they pitch, they don’t hit. When they hit, they don’t pitch.

Offense comes and goes as it pleases. They’ll probably have another 15 run game soon…. and that will pad their runs scored total.

  61. Matty C

    Kernal

I forgot that… now I don’t care that the Yankees missed the playoffs last year cuz they won the battle for September

  62. m

    SA,

Thanks for that. Reading that was bittersweet.

Wait until Betsy gets a hold of it. I don’t think she’ll take it well. ;)

It’s disappointing that they won’t be stretching him out, but it’ll be nice to see more appearances by Phil.

I hope the Yankees strongly consider putting Phil in the starting rotation next season. Even if he stays in the bullpen for the remainder of this season.

  63. XFactor

    TeixMVP,

So you’re saying they had a legit chance to make the playoffs last year when they were 10 games back of Tampa and Boston in mid September?

  64. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Scott, that has really only been a trend as of lately. Hence the cold streak. That is the problem.

We’ve clicked once, and we’re far too talented not too do it again.

  65. Blog Poster

The sad part about John Henry’s Twitter is that he has LOST more than $400 million worth of his client’s money.

Keep spending your valuable time tweeting you old geezer.

  66. m

Jeter didn’t lose that game yesterday. Gopher balls and errors did.

  67. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Ah, the troll who comes on here and calls me different names to annoy me. Hello, troll.

XFactor, I NEVER said that. Or hinted at it. It was over by then, easily. Since when was it over now? This is June, not September genius. And better pitching now kind of helps. A lot. With any baseball team.

  68. Steve B

“Yeah, Jeter said if he could do it over again he would do it the same”

Wasn’t like he ws swinging at one in the dirt. Some argument that after walking the previous hitter, you wait him out a bit. Then again, you have a pitcher who is in the position of not being able to fall behind the hitter and really needs a first pitch strike. Don’t have any problem with that at bat.

  69. Emo

Stop looking at talent. Start looking at results.

When have we ever played up to our talent? It’s like AJ Burnett… great talent, mediocre results. Same story here.

  70. ANSKY

    Matty C June 22nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Bryan is right. Full year stats are selective use of stats?? Since when? So if the Yankees miss the playoffs we can say but they had the best record in September!!!

    You guys are too much

    **************************************************

NOW things are crystal clear! Cashman (and maybe others) once said the Yanks play 162 one-game seasons. A small sample size to one person (one game) is a full season to others. So that means (in something like ‘dog years’) that the Yanks have been in a season-long slump for something like 8 of the last 12 seasons.

Now … THERE’s some serious grounds for griping! And ruining a good beer too, of course.

Wow, I gotta stop whining about the whining … it’ll give me a bad rep if it hasn’t already!

  71. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Emo, we DID have a stretch where we played up to our talent.

Obviously there are no gurantees. It depends if you think this cold streak is an aberration or a trend. I think aberration. You clearly think trend. Which is fine. But I disagree.

  72. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

    ANSKY-Ha ha, funny. :-)

  73. Bryan

“The sad part about John Henry’s Twitter is that he has LOST more than $400 million worth of his client’s money.

Keep spending your valuable time tweeting you old geezer.”

Now there is a great post

  74. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

    New thread.

  75. Me

    “you old geezer”

    Yes. 59 is ancient.

  76. The Ghost

“Yeah, Jeter said if he could do it over again he would do it the same”

    ==================

This is why Jeter never gets frazzled in big time situations – because he knows the reality is that he’s going to make outs a lot more than hits in a clutch situations so he does his best and moves on regardless of success or failure. It’s the guys that think failure in that situation has some kind of mystical hold on them going forward who end up doing worse in those situations than their average dictates. The ones who do better than their average dictates are the ones who are relaxed enough to take advantage of the pitcher’s lack of composure.
