$423.5 million doesn’t buy what it used to

Peter Abraham
June
23

After 70 games in 2008: 37-33, six games out of first.

After 70 games in 2009: 38-32, five games out of first.

“This is going to turn,” Joe Girardi said. “And when it does, it will be a welcome sight.”

A-Rod said his swings are getting more aggressive. Well that’s good.

and the LoHud blog doesn’t get what it used to either.

It’s going down the crapper with the trolls and bridge jumpers.

Hope the newspaper business holds up Pete…

  2. John

The sun will come up….. Tomorrow….

  3. Boston Dave - OPPC

were they in the wildcard lead at this point last season?

  4. Jose

This slump should make it crystal clear this winter—

Less superstars, more role players. Less guys who are one dimensional old DHs, more young athletic guys who can make things happen and not just sit back and wait for the HR.

How many years in a row do we need to see this same story before the organization realizes this?

  5. Giuseppe Franco

Nice job Pete feeding the trolls and bridge jumpers.

I think Mike Francesa took over the blog.

  6. Realist

“This is going to turn,” Joe Girardi said. “And when it does, it will be a welcome sight.””

Too bad you probably won’t be there when it does turn around.

  7. Boston Dave - OPPC

and $423.5M is over the course of 20 (player) seasons, not just 2009.

But I guess that’s a little complicated for you.

  8. E-gawa

It better turn. This is pathetic especially with kind of team.

  9. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC

    serenity now

  10. RMEL

The only thing working for us this year is that there is no “Strong” second team in the AL….Last year it was the Rays…Hey we still lead the Wildcard race….We have to not focus on the Sox but on the Rays, Blue Jays, Rangers and Angels…

  11. Mike

But I thought this team was better than last year’s?

Sure doesn’t look like it, and judging by those stats, it isn’t.

Same position we were in last year, except we have a slim 2 game lead on Tampa.

  12. H-Town

The guys making the $423 million for the most part, are carrying their weight.

    The others are not.

  13. Rachel

It only took the organization 6 weeks to realize that Arod needed a day off. I wonder how long it will take for them to realize that it isn’t his “timing” and he needs more time off. When he actually makes contact he pulls everything. He can’t clear his hips and hit anything good. Today was the first time in a long time he actually hit the ball decently to RF.

  14. Boston Dave - OPPC

    What’s falling faster?

    a) The Yankees offense

    b) the quality of Pete’s blog and user posts

tough one… on one hand the Yanks offense has been pathetic of late… on the other hand, this blog has been unreadable.

    hmmm…

  15. john

yeah when it turns. how well did that work out last year Joe? hmmmm

  16. Bob(the original)

At least we don’t have Ponson in the rotation this year!

    Think positive people. lol

I’m going to bed and forget this game.

    Tomorrow’s another day.

  17. Trevor

“and $423.5M is over the course of 20 (player) seasons, not just 2009″

Yeah it should read: $210M doesn’t but what it used to.
And that $400 million is in 3 players. 2 of 3 (CC & Teixiera) have earned their money. There goes that.
The payroll argument is tiring. Those dead presidents don’t play on the field.

  18. m

Flawed argument. They’re not spending 400M+ this season. What is it about the New England school system? First Henry, then Pete? :P

  19. Boston Dave - OPPC

And you eat a lot, you fat fat man!

  20. Mike Axisa

Even though the records though 70 games is pretty much the same, the difference between this year and last is that there will be no Ponson, Rasner, Pavano, et al in the rotation in the second half.

Or at least I hope not. A lot would have to go horribly, horribly wrong for that to happen.

  21. Christina

Then don’t read Boston Dave. I dont know what else to really tell you, except for the fact you spend more time complaining about the blog. Pete isn’t making you read it.

    The answer is B.

The difference is that the Yanks will turn it around sooner or later. The commenting on this blog has been getting progressively worse for awhile now.

This place NEEDS registration badly. But LoHud would seem to prefer trash over quality.

    ———-

    very true.

except it’s way to early to worry about specific teams.

just go out there and win games.

the Yanks are still a playoff-caliber team. when the dust settles, the Yanks will be there.

right now, there’s alot of dust. that’s all.

  24. Travis G.

    Pete,

that $423 million is spread out over a total of 20 years! you’re better than the MSM that uses that kind of statement all the time.

  25. John

Now why did you have to go and post that, that made me more depressed than before realizing they essentially are in the same spot as last year. I certainly expected with this staff there was no shot they would enter into these long tail spins. Although having said that I never factored Wang being as horrendous as he has been, that’s for sure.

  26. Arood

Arod is who he is without steroids. A .200 hitter who can’t hit a HR outside of bandbox Stadium.

  27. lil' m

    LOL on the title . . .

  28. m

Another difference is that no one is running away with anything this season. If the Yankees can clear the fog from their heads, they can get it done.

  29. john

and to the people hating Pete for stating the state of this team. That is his job, what can he possible post that could be positive right now.

Phil Hughes pitched well, I guess that should be the main topic of tonight according to some optimists on this blog.

That’s 5 of 6 lost now, try and spin that in a positive way. YOU CAN’T

  30. Christina

There’s still a lot of baseball to be played.

  31. CB

Before this two week period where the offense has disappeared every single yankee starter was in the top 10 in baseball in OPS. Every single one. They were #1 in OPS, #1 slugging and top 3 in OBP, and top 3 in runs scored.

The offense was never going to be that good. They were far exceeding their projections.

That high output offense appears to be correcting now. Unfortunately, it’s nearly every starter all at the same time. It’s bizarre but that’s what’s happening.

This team will clearly hit better than they are right now. How well they’ll hit over the course of the season is unclear. Better than now but not as good as they were doing when they were close to the #1 offense in baseball.

The big question and concern now is Alex and his hip. He continues to look very bad at the plate. This doesn’t appear to be something that 2 days off was going to fix.

He’s the wild car. The season is going to depend a great deal on what happens with him. This is a real concern. By this point you had to hope he was going to look better physically. He looks worse than he did the first game he came back. When he first came back you could see that his timing was off. Now he looks like he can’t drive through the ball properly. Given the significance of that hip injury it’s uncertain how well he’ll be able to perform.

Tex has been doing fine over this bad stretch for the team. But there’s no one on base in front of him and he’s getting walked more than he was last month.

The pitching staff has been very strong over the past two weeks. The team has rarely given up more than 4 runs in any game. You can’t expect more than that from either the rotation or the pen.

    Christina,

that’s definitely where it’s headed. it stinks but I probably won’t. before hicks like you came spewing trash out from the gaps in your teeth, this blog wasn’t all that bad.

there was excellent discussion and it was a great place to talk Yankees.

now some 2 dollar tramp from Buffalo is telling me to get lost.

    gotta love it.

  34. John

Yankees need a good game tomorrow, they get Lowe Thursday and no excuse not to dominate the Mets the weekend with that lineup regardless who is pitching for them.

Pelfrey , Redding and Livian vs CC Burnett and Wang?

Sorry out of the next 5 games, 3 games should not be the worst case, 4 is definitely possible. Maybe that stretch spurs this team forward. But tomorrow would be a good start.

  40. Christina

You seem like quite a classy guy, Dave. You complain EVERY day about the blog, which is your prerogative I suppose. But no need to get nasty. I said if you don’t like it then don’t read. It isnt that hard of a concept.

But directly attack me and call me a 2 dollar tramp from Buffalo. Real nice. I dont even live in Buffalo, genius.

Some of the regulars have been here supporting LoHud for a long long time.

I was here when the norm for this place was 20 comments on a game thread and not 1,000+ as it is now.

I don’t want to see this place turn into a toxic waste dump full of whiners and completely moronic bridge jumpers.

But LoHud seems intent on letting it happen and that’s just a damn shame. This used to be the best blog out there for talking Yankee Baseball.

I know there are a ton of regulars who feel the same way.

  42. Optimus

That’s right Boston Dave. I love it. Fans spewing pure venom tonight. Foaming at the mouth. The Yankees are a bunch of god damn bums. People are out of work struggling to get by and these overpaid pieces of garbage just go home after every loss making their $500K and do it all over the next night.

    1. It’s mostly my disappointment in coming to the realization that a blog that I loved coming to on a daily basis has gone down the tubes

    2. It’s also the fact that if you attack me (and I don’t mean disagree with me, that is fine), I’m going to tear your head off and eat the rest of you alive.

If I offended Christina, great. If I offended anybody else, I apologize.

I will take your advice and head out. Sorry if I offended you.

  44. Pepitone

Hey, Guiseppe, The Baseball Einstein, this one’s for you -

The one thing that Ordonez and Ortiz have in common is that neither were coming off surgery, both had a full Spring Training, and both had quite a few more at-bats under their at-bats under their belts when they got benched than A-Rod does.
What do you expect? Did you expect A-Rod to rest for a couple of days and then go 5-for-5 with 3 home runs tonight?
Sorry, imbecile. This isn’t a video game. Baseball players don’t bust out of slumps that that. Ken Singleton even talked about it on the broadcast.
It’s people like you who don’t have any idea what you’re talking about that turns this place into a sewer.
A-Rod is not going to get benched – nor should he. I’ve never seen anyone bust out of a slump by sitting on the bench.
Ortiz and Ordonez are two completely different cases and have nothing to do with A-Rod.
    ……………………
You know what, Pal, I’ve been reading your drivel on this blog for over a year, at first I thought you knew what you were talking about, like SJ44, Randy, CB, or Pat M. But, you’re nothing but a blinkered homer with no more baseball sense than a child. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about!
You bore me. I answered your scenarios point by point, and your so-called rebuttal answered none of my arguments. As a matter of fact you have no arguments, just name calling (”Duh, your an idiot!” “Duh, what a moron…”). I teach Junior Highers, and I never argue with them. They have more class in their little finger than you do in your entire body. So, if I refuse to argue with a child, I certainly am not going to stoop to arguing with the likes of a boor like you.
I’m here to talk Yankee baseball with fans that know what they’re talking about, and you don’t qualify. Adios!

  45. Faaaa

Posada is the guy to blame when he reseted last sunday against Johan we blow them out but when he came into the lineup the slump began. Also when Posada came back the errorless streaked ened soon after he is the curse to this team

  46. Betsy

The pitching has been very good – really, it’s not on them. Even the pen has generally been ok. As long as Wang is shaky, Phil is not going to be able to be an 8th inning man, not on a consistent basis. Too bad, because he’s been spectacular. He was looking much better as a starter too, so even if the velocity dips upon his return to the rotation, I expect to see much the same Phil. HIs performance really is fantastic news – he’s developing right before our eyes. I’m trying to concentrate on Phil right now because thinking about the Yankees offense is making my brain bleed.

  47. vey

Pete please do your job, don’t believe the crazy talk around the blog.

  48. Pepitone

Hey, Boston Dave meet Guiseppe Franco, you two make a great couple.

  49. Trevor

Not sure about that. They tried to convince me Swisher is an everyday player. because he gets on base a lot.

  50. Bodas

    > 2. It’s also the fact that if you attack me (and I don’t mean disagree with me, that is fine), I’m going to tear your head off and eat the rest of you alive.

    Yikes! Sounds like Hannibal Lechter!

  51. John

Arod is not the issue on this team. He hit some homers since his return, but mostly it was getting on base and getting some walks. Anything was better than Ransom or Berroa or did we forget what was there to start the year with a National League lineup.

    The current offensive issues.

Johnny Damon is never fully appreciated for what he brings to this lineup when healthy. When he is out he is missed.

Robbie is being Robbie, getting back to the first pitch hacking and thinking he can hit every pitch instead of getting on base. He is turning into the 2008 Cano very quickly.

    Jorge slumping for sure.

And depending on Swisher right now is a crap shoot. He does work the count, but like most of these guys doesn’t have the ability to shorten his stroke and fight off a series of pitches.

And Tex has slowed down a bit, maybe because of Arod or maybe he was due. He was a monster for a good stretch, no one has stepped up to fill the void.

And DJ, can’t leave him out. Back to a lot of the group ball outs and double plays. Had many spots the last few games to get them back. Eventually he will probably propel them with a big hit soon, but he has killed them in more than a few big spots lately. It happens. Just stinks when everyone is slumping.

A few weeks back this lineup was functioning as one. Arod willing to take a walk rather than overswing. Guys getting on. Some hit and runs. All that has stalled to a team of hitters acting as individuals. No more getting to the weak bullpens of these teams, they are letting the starters go deep, wasting some quality starts by our guys and not getting it done. They have the talent, but not sold all of them mentally get it.

  52. miggs

“I still want to know how Joe can’t figure out a way to get Mo into a game……it’s been a week already. That’s sad……”

You’re the first one to start whining and complaining when you think Mo is being used too much. Twice in a row, 3 out of 4 games, you start posting about his arm falling off.

Now its the hand-wringing over him NOT getting into a game. Newsflash… since the 16th when he pitched last they’ve lost 5 out of 6 and the win wasn’t a save situation. Sure Girardi could have gotten him an inning sometime. But its not the end of the world. The guy is pushing 40, I’m sure he can get his work in on the side to stay fresh.

With all that’s wrong with the team right now that seems like a silly thing to complain about.

  53. Boston Dave - OPPC

    Fine Christina. I apologize.

However, I’ve only been complaining about the blog for a few days. I’ve been complaining about game threads for a bit longer.

Had you been around last season or prior, it was a different place now.

I suppose it’s like growing up in a nice neighborhood where you knew the neighbors and everybody got along.

Then over the years, crime went up and the neighborhood was suddenly a dump.

Time to move out and find a new place to live.

    You win.

  54. Giuseppe Franco

My advice to you would be then to stop responding to my posts for good.

I didn’t respond to you. You responded to me.

So if you don’t understand that Ortiz and Ordonez situations have little in common with what A-Rod is going through – then I can’t help you understand.

Maybe you should ask one of your junior high schoolers to explain it to you. It’s not really that complicated.

  55. Optimus

Keep bashing the Yanks Pete. They deserve nothing less. No improvement from last season? Are you effing kidding me? All that money, all that hype, all the “Girardi has changed” BS and they are in the same place they were last year with Ponson pitching. Nonsense

  62. Betsy

Miggs, I do not recall being one of the ones to overly complain when Mo is being “overused”. It’s still been a week – I realize the Yankees have not been in a save situation for awhile, but one inning would not have killed him. That said, obviously I agree – this team has far worse problems…..

  63. AD

No Dave, you’re right. I shouldn’t have punched after the bell.

  64. Christina

Angel- There is no issue with voicing your opinion, but the constant attacks on people are uncalled for.

The team is doing poorly and people are complaining. What can you do about that? Stop people from replying to the blog? Or just ignore the idiots? My life doesn’t end when the Yankees lose a game and a realistic person realizes that the season is far from over. Regardless, the team needs to get it together soon. They are a much better team than they are playing right now.

But, what would I know. I am just a gap-toothed 2 dollar whore from Buffalo.

as long as you can keep the comedy going, who cares if the other blog posts are miserable.

  74. Giuseppe Franco

Only the malcontents have issues with what Boston Dave and I have been saying tonight.

Guys like CB, Pat M, SJ, Mel, Brandon, and most of the other smart regulars feel the exact same way.

We aren’t the reasons why they stay away from this place during game threads.

It’s because of people like bill, Rachael, Christina, and the rest of the rag tag bunch.

  75. Donnie - Can't Even Be Bothered To Meet Anyone Under the O'Neill Banner

Everyone is upset about the “bridge jumpers” and the people who don’t know what they’re talking about, and really, I fail to see what the problem is.

Look, it’s like this: If there’s posts I don’t want to read, I scroll past them. I look for comments from people on this blog that I KNOW have some kind of knowledge. If I skim one and find someone who’s opinion, or attitude, with which I disagree, I skip that comment and move on. It’s not that hard, and I don’t really feel the need to call that person out.

Also, I feel like the term “bridge jumper” is getting thrown around a lot, and that’s not really fair at this point. This team is playing Godawful baseball right now, and has been since the trip to Boston two weeks ago. There is absolutely no denying that. I think at this point it’s just as fair for someone to say that they don’t think this team has a shot at making the playoffs, because it IS a valid theory. We are over 1/3 of the way through the season now, and if…IF this team can’t turn it around quickly, they’re going to be in the same place they were last season. Also, as Pete pointed out, we are exactly one game better than we were last year. Where did we end up last year? At this point, it’s not inconceivable that we will see a repeat of last year. It’s simply not. It’s not longer “bridge jumping”, because this team IS playing the exact same brand of listless baseball that they did last year.

So while I, personally, think it’s a little bit better to temper my comments with “ifs” and “if they don’t”, I will not tell people that think they’re sunk already that they’re wrong, because for all we know, they might be.

I guess my point is that this place is just as crappy to be in when people are talking down to other people. Just because you know more about baseball than someone else doesn’t make anyone a better person, or give them the right to tell that person that they’re not worthy of posting on the blog. Ignore them, and read what you want to read. It’s not hard to be nice to people. It’s really not.

  76. Prime

Statistically, the team doesn’t seem to be doing that poorly. Every single starter and melky has an OPS+ of greater than 100. Four of the starting pitchers (and now probably hughes) has an ERA+ of greater than 100. Of course that is rendered meaningless if they can’t hit or drive in runs with RISP and if the bullpen ruins close games.

Even Boston doesn’t have every position player and 4 starting pitchers with an OPS/ERA+ of > 100. They do manage to hit when it counts, but it shows that the yankees are not playing nearly at the level they should be or are capable of playing it. They just need to put it all together at once.

    Donnie,

well said, now check your back, and see if your bleeding, that’s what truth will get you here.

The one that worries me is Posada, he looked totally overmatched today and is hitting 200 for June. The others have various reasons but Posada has always been the offensive glue. I still think the launch pad at YS is a major cause for the general slump. I remember one game where they had six hits – four HRs, two singles. That is beyond abnormal. They started overswinging and wrecked their mechanics. I continue to be amazed at Swisher’s brain cramps in high leverage situations, unprofessional. This is a second generation baseball player. Today’s first pitch swing on a poor pitch was just painful. Looks like the Yankees got skanked for his contract. Damon is breaking down, It’s painful to watch Matsui, Melky is 200 for the month but his at bat approach is much improved from last year. The only positive is Gardner’s development, it’s too soon to tell but he has been putting some good swings on quality pitches. His swings and judgement have really improved, he’s thinking at the plate and it’s good to see.

  79. Boston Dave - OPPC

    Donnie,

while you are probably right, it’s still a tough pill to swallow.

The reason many of us come here is to share a passion for the Yankees.

When half of the posters are either Red Sox fans whose only purpose is to annoy others or supposed Yankee fans that criticize every single player, coach, manager, GM, owner on almost every play, it’s tough to bear.

Surely you can understand this frustration.

For me personally, I can probably handle it better. But that doesn’t take away the fact that the blog has changed dramatically.

The rational Yankee fan who wants nothing more than the Yanks to win is in the vast minority.

    It stinks.

When Wang was back to the rotation on June 4, Yankees are not Yankees. They totally have 7-10. At first, Yankees lead AL , but now they fall 4.0 behind Boston.

But when A-Rod was back in May, Yankees were like a monster. They could find different ways to win games. In May, Yankees did comeback win or walkoff win. They had longest winning streak from May 13 to May 21 and 1.5 biggest lead in AL .

A-Rod’s back brings Yankees good luck in May. However, what happened to Wang’s back in June? The same situation, but different chemistry.

  81. Bo Knows

Rivera is known throughout his career for going up and down the strike zone thus changing the hitting plane of the batter. One would think Posada would learn from this. Today, Hughes pitching, with a 063 hitter at the plate, he set up on the outside corner on seven of the eight pitches, total head scratcher. He finally went up and in for the strike out.

  82. Munson Fan

The Yankees are a poor situational hitting team. They don’t do the Pedroia Youkalis type stuff. They always drive, drive, drive. They never hit new pitchers (several seasons now). ARod needs to be batting 6, Cano 3, Tex 4, Posada 5. ARod is this generation’s Dave Winfield-the superstar face of an overrated, flawed franchise.

  83. Bo Knows

Girardi has to work with what he has. You don’t need to tell Jeter that pulling a low outside slider will result in a DP. Jeter is the face of the franchise. He’s making 23 mil a year. Try managing that. These are the top paid professionals in the business. Other than Teix and Damon in the top six, quality at bats are few and far between, whatever the results. Down three they hit a HR, great result bad at bat.

  84. hughes wang small chacons

at this point last year…….. we were able to use injuries as an excuse for this very expensive disappointment. now, not so much.

  85. hughes wang small chacons

and just in case you missed it, we are the laughing stalk of baseball. where a month ago people were making fun of us for our joke of a stadium, now they’re making fun of our heartless lineup.

remember when swish was busting teammates in the face with shaving cream pies…… me neither.

  86. Buck Nasty

Remember when the baseball season ended in July?

    Me Neither

  87. Fan Interference

It’s a testament to the mediocrity around the league that the Yankees at 38-32, are tied for the Wild Card.

    Nice work Bud.

  88. Tom

money doesn’t guarantee ya anything. but the steinbrenners also know you can’t take it to your grave

  89. Cliff

Your better than this Pete. So somehow the Yankees spent $423 mil so far this season and are not going to get anything out of them for the next 8 years?

Come on, you sound like you don’t know baseball

  90. Chucky P

Pitch calling has been the killer for Jorge. Pitched McCann all low and away, finally he sat on it and almost launched it out. Next batter? You guessed it Garrett Anderson, low and away, two run double. Does it with Mo, CC, AJ etc… His personality has become too strong and demanding with his pitch selection. How many trips to the mound did he have to take with Andy? Andy? The guy he’s caught the most over his career he can’t get on the same page with? The teams ERA with him is almost a full run higher then with Cervelli or Molina. Strangely it is with Cash but I’ll just call the small sample a fluke. But Cervelli is no fluke.

  91. Chucky P

One other shallow excuse…. we can’t move runners along to save our lives. Not just hit with RISP. We can’t get a bunt down, slap it to the right side of the infield or just plain manufacture offense. We are doing none of the small things right. We are playing very bad baseball right now. Just like earlier when someone posted Swish going after the first pitch out of the zone, bad baseball. Guys a little wild, bases are loaded, advantage batter. You can’t help the pitcher out. Jeter did the same thing twice. Bad baseball.

  92. Chucky P

Hideki can’t run well, Damon can’t throw well and Nady can’t throw at all. That is three OF’s that should or have to be a DH but only one DH spot. Essentially we have to hope Damon stays healthy enough to play the majority of LF and live with his baulky throwing shoulder. The only good thing about having the money to go get someone else may be to not go get someone at all but to eat some salary and call up Austin Jackson. He hits lefties as well as Nady does, has way more upside and is much better defensively. It may be time to cut some losses. Nady was mostly a lefty platoon guy anyway. Nick is the better 4th outfielder. Melky RF, Brett CF, Austin LF with Damon as a DH and Nick/Hideki as the 4th outfielder. I love me some Matsui but the time may have come to move him.

  93. Madam Yan kee

//Even though the records though 70 games is pretty much the same, the difference between this year and last is that there will be no Ponson, Rasner, Pavano, et al in the rotation in the second half.//

What’s embarrassing about the remark up above is that this team’s front office went out this past winter and spent $423.5 million to make this year’s team better than last year’s team.

I’d say it was a total failure by this year’s record result at this point of the season.

5 games out today. The Madam says 10 out and fourth place by July 1st. It looks like it’s going to get worse around here before it gets any better.

The Braves are mad and Nick Green and the Red Sox have made them that way. The Yankees will be their whipping post the rest of the week. Expect a Braves sweep of the Yanks!

Nick Green: How come we can’t get players liek that?

  94. Paul from Cali

This team is even more lifeless then it was with Torre at the helm. Until Girardi is fired we may as well get used to this kind of garbage baseball.
