Frustration is mounting as the Yankees lost again.

CC Sabathia will throw a bullpen today to determine his status for Friday. This notebook also has updates on Johnny Damon, a denied protest, Cody Ransom and Ian Kennedy.

I found this amusing. Armando Benitez blew the save in the Atlantic League All-Star Game last night. Handed a 5-3 lead in the ninth, Armando allowed four runs. Luis Lopez drove in the game-winner. Armando is 36 and hoping to make yet another return to the majors after breaking hearts for 15 years.

Happy Birthday, Phil! He’s all of 23………

I am really at a loss with this team after last night. How could this be a .500ish team with this level of talent. They should be steamrolling marginal teams with this group of players (on paper at least). The worst part is, there looks to be nobody to blame but the players. I think everyone at the beginning of the year was excited about the pitching staff, and I give cash a pass on the bullpen because they typically come together mid year. The offense should be great just looking up and down the lineup.

Figuring out why they aren’t consistently performing is a mystery to me, but it’s not bad luck – look at the run differentials in the AL east and you can see we are the third best team.

  3. charlestonchew

The Yankees are a streaky team. They have been the last few years. This is the same storyline, over and over. Boston is in first before the break, we rally and overtake them, we go to the World Series or ALCS and then promptly lose.

We are still a second half team and 5 games out of first isn’t bad. The Red Sox are going to start hurting pitching-wise and their offense has holes that they need to fill. We don’t need either of those. We just have to get out of this losing streak and into a winning one – the level of talent that we have is just too great to continue losing like this.

  4. Hokiehill

Mystery solved…Jeter said it yesterday, they’re just not hitting. Few of the games lost during this abismal run the Yankees are on were lost because of pitching. Now why they can’t seem to buy a run or at least a hit with RISP is a mystery.

Listening to the game last night Susan kept going on and on about how A-Rod is continuously trying to pull the ball even with pitches low and away and how he should just try and hit those the other way. I didn’t see the game so I’m curious if this is just a case of Susan being terrible (very possible) or if she has a point there…anyone have anything there?

This gem from the NY Times today:

In their last nine games, the Yankees faced eight starters they had never faced before. Those pitchers have a combined earned run average of 2.54, and only one allowed more than three earned runs against the Yankees.

    Great job, Girardi and Long.

  6. Doreen

Wow – the notebook version of what CC said yesterday is quite different in tone and ocntent than what was put on on the blog yesterday. Makes me feel like a fool for overreacting. Lesson learned.

    Good news about Ian Kennedy.

Happy 23rd (!) birthday to Phil Hughes.

The mounting calls for Girardi’s removal come from who? Where? Fans? Talk Radio hosts? Writers? What will be will be, but I doubt we fans, or anyone else not involved with the actual running of the team, have any direct impact on whether a manager stays or goes. So, except for being a storyline, it’s not important to me. It’s only important if it becomes a distraction – meaning questions to players after the game or to Girardi dealing with his perceived job security.

  7. Hokiehill

charlestonchew, I still have a (decreasing) feeling we’ll make the playoffs, but I have no confidence at this point in us winning a playoff series. We haven’t had but one reliable starter all season and he’s currently having arm issues….I just don’t see how we’ll be able to look at pitching matchups with any team and confidently say we should take 2 of 3

  8. Hokiehill

Yeah Doreen, I agree on CC…I jumped on him yesterday for basically throwing Girardi under the bus publicly…my reaction appears to have been premature so my apologies to CC

  9. jamie hamma

Did girardi get fired yet? Is there anyone out there like billy martin? You know, someone who would punch a rod in the face.what a piece of garbage. Why god… Why!? is cashman still employed. He paid 40 million for kei igawa..enough said.. Never mind the dozen or so other stupid signings.. And is he the only person in the baseball universe that thinks joba should be a starter?

  10. just the fax

Your 23rd birthday, Phil? Only two years older than Clayton Kershaw, huh? We’re looking for you to catch up to him in pitching maturity this year.

  11. 86w183

I’ve raised the issue of advance scouting time and time again with no information forthcoming.

Pete — I’ve read where the Yankees no longer employ advance scouts and rely on video to prepare. Can you enlighten us on the subject? If that’s true it has to go into the Hal of Fame for “Penny-wise /Pound-foolish” strategies ever and would certainly explain their awful approach to new pitchers.

IF Damon can go tonight I hope Swisher gets to visit the bench. One RBI in 12 games covering 42 AB. As bad as Alex has been, he hasn’t been THAT bad.

Still Berroa occupies a spoton the bench… insane!

  12. 86w183

I’m not advocating a managerial change… but if they make one it has to be for Larry Bowa. This team and these high priced bellhops could use a kick in the rear.

  13. Joey's Poodle

Also not advocating dumping Girardi yet, but if they did what are the chances they put Pena is as interim manager for the rest of the year?

  14. 56Bomber

The soft toss to 2nd (actually centerfield) and the lack of hustle after his 4th strikeout should land Posada on the bench for a few days. This team needs something to shake them up and that might do it. God forbid if Cano showed any of that laziness.

  15. Oh man

The Red Sox made a mockery of the Nationals last I am very surprised everyone in here told me Lannan was a stud

  16. 86w183

Yeah that was a lifetime achievement free pass Jorge’ got for not running on that swing and miss in the dirt. We and the “objective media” would be blasting Girardi if Cano, Cabrera or just about anyone else did that. If it were Alex they’d be convening a firing squad.

Alex shouldn’t need a “day off” this week. He was off Friday, Saturday and Monday and gets next Monday off too. Of course the way he’s swinging the bat Berroa might be a better option anyway.

  17. lswaha

    PLEASE FIRE GIRARDI.

I am going to start a “Joe must Go” online petition.

  18. Doreen

While they did wear Lannan down, apparently, they only scored 3 runs off him. They pounded the bullpen in the last 2-2/3 innings.

  19. Ohmy

What is Pete’s problem with Dominicans? Wow I hope is not racism.

  20. Patrick

Yankees offense is in a huge slump right now but there’s no reason to panic. The pitching looks a lot better so once the offense starts clicking again the Yanks should be fine.

I’m a bit troubled by Girardi though, he is really not a good manager. At times I want him gone but it might hurt the team more than it helps.

The bottom line is, the offense has to snap out of this funk their in and get it going. It all starts with A-rod, he has to figure things out and start hitting. If he goes on a tear this team will win a lot of games.

  21. Oh man

    3 runs in 6 innings… I can read also 9 hits and 2 walks

Remind me what the Yankees did off him please

Also while you are at it tell me what the Yankees did off Brad Penny who couldn’t throw strikes and was serving up meatball after meatball

  22. Patrick

    their should be *they’re*

  23. DB

I hope people on this site start seeing how much of a vapor lock Swisher is. He has no business batting 2nd in this lineup. I’d rather see Cano, Melky, or Gardner there if Damon is hurt.

Don’t let his numbers fool you, the man has no baseball sense and it has cost the Yanks a handful of games so far.

There is no reason why having ARod in a slump should cause the whole lineup to shut down. It’s like this team lives and dies by ARod. Which is all well and good when he is playing like himself.

  24. Doreen

    Oh man -

Please. You inferred they pounded Lannan himself. I did write they apparently wore him down. I did not say the Yankees did well against him or anyone else in the last week or so. They scored the majority, by far, of their runs against the bullpen. I felt what you wrote was misleading to anyone who didn’t watch the game, or look at the boxscore.

No need to be snarky. No sane person here would try to say the Yankees have played well lately. However, Lannan pitched a good game last week against them. It does happen, you know, that a pitcher has a legitmately good game against the Yankees.

  25. DB

You could throw Dave LaPoint against the Yanks today and he would shut the Yanks down. Those three Nationals pitchers throw garbage. Their fastballs avg 89 and their breaking stuff was 82. All of them. It was pathetic. Every batting order in the game has their way with the Nationals except our star studded bunch of flakes.

  26. Hokiehill

the lack of a real person doing advanced scouting is an interesting point. I know with the video technology available that may not be as valuable as it once was, but I’m curious how many other teams still have advance scouts on the payroll…also, the video technology only works if the Yankees use it…any one with the inside info on how players utilize the video scouting reports?

    Thanks

  27. Patrick

Well I think the offense can still be effective without A-rod. I’m simply saying that if A-rod comes out of his slump I think the rest of the offense will follow. If he doesn’t, they can still score but it will be more difficult.

Honestly I don’t care how it happens, the Yanks need to score more runs.

Here are the runs scored from the Red Sox series and onwards:
    0, 5, 3, 9, 2, 15, 5, 2, 0, 5, 1, 5, 0.

Other than the games against the Mets they have been VERY bad. They are averaging 4 runs scored over that stretch of 13 games. Take out the 15 run game and it’s 3.08 runs per game.

  28. 86w183

Patrick — Good numbers… to me the bigges thing is five runs or less in 11 of 13 games and three runs or less 7X.

  29. seekyn

It’s time to shake up this anemic offense. Let’s stop the excuses, let’s stop the bs about facing “new” pitchers, and stop the cliches about luck and it’s a matter of time.
Girardi has consistently mismanaged his pitchers and games, as he did in his last job.
Get rid of Berrora, bench or trade Matsui, give the older guys like Damon, Posada and Jeter more rest, give A-rod regular days off, remember that Swisher will have streaks but is basically a platoon player. Could Shelly Duncan be any worse?
It’s time to try some of the AAA hitters. And why not give more time to Cervelli with Posada taking days off or DH’ing occassionally?

  30. haiku-man

I sure hope Jeter doesn’t go to the All Star game, hitting into double plays, and cost the AL home field advantage.

  31. Fan mail from some flounder

    tastic:

    “Great job, Girardi and Long.”

I don’t recall either of them in the lineup. Hmmm…
