This release from the Indians:

The Cleveland Indians today announced they have acquired RHP Jose Veras from the New York Yankees for cash considerations. Veras will join the Indians 25-man roster over the coming days with a corresponding roster move being announced at that time.

Veras, 28, went 3-1 with a 5.96 ERA (25.2IP, 23H, 17R/ER, 14BB, 18K) in 25 appearances out of the bullpen for the Yankees before being designated for assignment on June 16th. He limited Major League batters to a .235 (23-98) average against, including a mark of .180 (11-50) against right-handed batters. Prior to being designated, 9 of his last 12 appearances with New York were scoreless (8.0IP, 12H, 5R/ER, 4BB, 6K).

In 2008, Veras was 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA (57.2IP, 52H, 23R/ER, 29BB, 63K) in 60 appearances with the Yankees as he finished 2nd on the team in both relief innings pitched and appearances. He was signed by the Yankees as a free agent in 2005 after spending time in the Tampa Bay and Texas organizations. He currently owns a Major League record of 8-4 with 3 saves and a 4.43 ERA (103.2IP, 89H, 51R/ER, 55BB, 94K) in 106 games.

Cash considerations? That has to be at least three figures.

Does that mean the Indians buy the Yankees a beer the next time they are drinking together?

  2. Tom B June 24th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

    nah nah naaaa naaa….

  3. Andrew June 24th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Maybe this means Shapiro will just hand Cashman Mark DeRosa at the deadline?

  4. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint June 24th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

    100 bucks?

  5. ANSKY June 24th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

    “… for cash considerations”

How much did the Yanks have to pay them?

  6. Tom in N.J. June 24th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

They’ll consider sending the Yankees cash; however, once the Tribe sees him pitch they’ll send the Yankees a bill.

Godspeed, Jose Veras, I wish you well.

“Indians acquire RHP Jose Veras from Yankees in exchange for cash considerations.”

    Mmmmm, cash considerations…

    ****

Something like that. Maybe they reimbursed the Yanks for his ride out of town? I dunno…

  9. Stephen June 24th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

So the Indians sign Luis Vizcaino (then release him) and now take on his doppelganger. Congrats, Cleveland.

This has Latroy Hawkins written all over it.

Will become a solid set up man for another team.

Thats a possibility. Like his gas money from the Bronx to Cleveland. Not sure he was worth airfare

Does a warm Piels Light really count as beer?

    The LaTroy Hawkins/Nick Green Corollary.

  14. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

They offered to buy legends seats for a fan for 1 game…better than the minor leager who was traded to a team for a few baseball bats

  15. Dave June 24th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

I guess Cash wanted to upgrade his iPhone.

  16. SJ44 June 24th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

150 baserunners (counting his career HBP numbers) in 103 innings and he is going to be a “quality setup man” for the Indians?

    Ok, whatever you say.

In a league DESPERATE for pitching, that’s the best deal they could have gotten for him.

Gives you an idea of what teams think of him.

The Yankees held onto him too long and he cost them games they would love to have back right now.

    Good riddence

“Does that mean the Indians buy the Yankees a beer the next time they are drinking together?”

If they buy the beer in Yankee stadium it will be around $10-$12, and the Yankees will have come out on top in that deal.

  18. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

I’d like to redact that statement…forgot that guy had died.

  19. EricNS June 24th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

how much will we get for Berroa, Tomko?

  20. Blog Poster June 24th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Hokiehill – I recommend you “retract” , not “redact” that statement.

  21. Oh man June 24th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Too bad the Yankees don’t see the Indians again he would dominate them

  22. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

We’re going to trade Berroa for roster space…

  23. saucY June 24th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

    monopoly money?

  24. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

yeah…i think they both work…retract probably more appropriate but anyway….

redact: to obscure or remove (text) from a document prior to publication or release

  25. GreenBeret7 June 24th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

It really doesn’t mean squat what Veras does with Cleveland or any other team. The point is that he hasn’t and was going to “be a quality setup man” with the Yankees.

  26. vb03 June 24th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

“I’d like to redact that statement…forgot that guy had died.”

I read about that, incredibly sad story.

  27. Yankees #1 June 24th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

    Jose who????
    Oh yeah, that muchacho.
The indians can have him. They already have vizcaino-and we all know how well he pitched for us.

  28. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

yeah seriously, Pete if you’re out there, just delete that post for me…

  29. Erica - newly OPPC June 24th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

    What happened to that player?

  30. Patrick June 24th, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Bad job by Cashman. He probably could have gotten a useful player or prospect if he had traded Veras in the offseason.

  31. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

    drug overdose…

  32. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

I had remembered the story about being traded for bats, but couldn’t remember the details…googled after I posted…now I feel like a jerk.

  33. Hokiehill June 24th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

on a different note, what is the Yanks roster move going to be?

  34. Erica - newly OPPC June 24th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

    new thread

Btw- Hokiehill, that is a really sad story

  35. ADam June 24th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAH .

  36. Chambliss June 24th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Cleveland will stop payment on the check once they see him in live action.

  37. Johnny D. June 24th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Finally! Enjoy your crappy new pitcher, Injuns.

  38. Don June 24th, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Were they reading this blog and that’s why he was traded?

  39. rbj June 24th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Wow, Yankees got more than a bucket of used balls for him.

  40. k June 24th, 2009 at 5:36 pm

LMAO Pete that is too funny. Bet the Yanks had to pay the Indians some serious money.

  41. KO June 24th, 2009 at 5:54 pm

lol yeah Pete is too funny. Well if by too funny, you mean really stupid and corny and hardly ever actually funny, then yeah I agree. It’s too bad we lost Veras instead of Tomko. I mean guys are hitting .235 off Veras. His main problem has been walking way too many guys. Tomko on the other hand is mediocre garbage. I’m glad we sold away some talent and kept the washed up guy instead. Nice one Cashman.
