Wait, just so you know, I haven’t been ignoring you. I’ve just checked on the blog periodically and haven’t had a chance to read through all the posts.

IMO, CC came out and said specifically that it could have been the 120 pitches..IMO, that means he’s referring to Joe throwing him out there. He had no problems with the Brewers last year – in fact, he told his agent to stop calling them to try and get them to not work CC’s arm to death. I don’t see how his statement could refer to any pitch he’s thrown this year.

Tex’s comment, IMO, was more about the players. He’s already said he loves Girardi as a manager – more than that, I do not believe for an instant that he has lost the clubhouse (and that is what a harsh intepretation of his comments would mean). I posted another Tex quote this morning where he credits Joe for having the players’ back – others have said the same thing. IMO, I think Tex was saying that the players were the problem….maybe he didn’t say it as well as he could have, but that’s the feeling I get.

SJ, I agree about Pena…the kid needs to play. However, I cringe at the thought of Cody Ransom out there for even one minute. He’s dreadful. The Yanks should have DFA’d him the minute they activated him.

  3. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

Fair enough. Just wanted to know how you rationalized your thoughts on the quotes.

  4. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN

I’d take Ransom over Berroa any day and that’s saying something.

  5. m

Ransom will be better the second time around. I mean he can’t be much worse, right? Right?

  6. Boogie Down Bob

    Betsy,

I wouldn’t say that he’d “dreadful.” If we were asking him to be an everyday player, then yes, I’d agree with that comment.

But off the bench, to spell some guys a night or two a week, I don’t think he’s a terrible option.

Read a hilarious story about Nats fans sending Sox fans to a gay bar in DC on SportingNews.com:

“”Hi Everyone, I’m coming in this week for the Sox series. Are there any decent sportsbars near the ballpark?” one apparent Red Sox fan asked on the Nats’ online forum.

“There’s only a beer garden next to the park,” replied one famously instigator from the team’s boards. “you’re better off up the street on Capitol Hill, Remingtons (639 Pennsylvania Ave SE) is a NE Patriots bar so they’ll probably have a large Red Sox crowd this week.”

If you have a well-developed sense of skepticism, here’s where you might start to doubt this story.

Because a quick trip to Remington’s Web site reveals nothing about the Patriots or the Red Sox, and not a word about Big Papi’s magnificence or Bill Simmons’s wit, but plenty of photos of guys wearing cowboy hats accompanying men in drag, Remington’s being D.C.’s most famous Western-themed gay bar.”

    Hilarious.

  8. Dave

How do I submit a question? Sorry I’m new at this.

  9. JENNIFER

    vb03

    That is hilarious!

  10. m

lol. Pete didn’t make his bed. His mom’s going to get on him for that.

  11. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

where does one submit their questions for this chat?

  12. Brandon... "Farve 3, NFL FRUSTRATED RETIRE ALREADY FANS 0"

atleast Ransom is better than Shelley

  13. m

    Dave,

Press play on the chat that’s southwest of the video screen. Just fill & submit. Good luck, it’s tough to get your questions posted.

  14. m

SJ, I definitely understand all those points about Pena and trying to see if he can develop more as a hitter. I just worry about the scenario where Jeter has a minor injury and you have Cody Ransom playing shortstop for 2 or 3 straight days, or even the defense sacrificed when Al is out of the lineup resting once a week or whatever it becomes. The team is clearly not built to worry about the defense they get from their backup infielder, but this year the backup infielder spot seems more important just because of A-Rod’s need for rest and Jeter’s inevitable bumps and bruises.

That said it would definitely be nice to see if Ramiro could grow into a full-time SS, simply because it’s a position at which the Yankees have done nothing at prospect-wise since developing Jeter. Simultaneously, if he is going to AAA to play every day from now until September (which I am not convinced is actually going to happen), I hope Cashman can find someone else besides Cody Ransom to be the reserve infielder.

  16. Jerry-NJ

Thanks Friedrich! Everyone on the chat should click on the banner, let them know we like their sponsorship of Pete’s live chat!

  17. Dave

M – thanks for helping! I must be missing something. I only see Volume (+ or -) and “menu” in the southeast corner. I’ve seen the appropriate format before for submitting questions but I think I might be having browser issues?

  18. SJ44

I guess I’m late to the party re: Tex’s comments. I don’t see what the big deal is.

Tex has already said Girardi is the best manager he’s ever played for so, he’s not throwing him under the bus.

He’s talking about the entire TEAM. He’s also right.

The entire team held a closed door meeting after the Tuesday night game. Two guys spoke: Jeter and Tex.

That tells you how much cred Tex has in that locker room.

Meaning, he’s not throwing a manger he loves playing for under the bus.

  19. Trevor

    RIP Farrah Fawcett.

  20. m

    dave,

No. Look outside the box. It’s to the right of the video screen, it says “Cover it Live”

  21. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    i see no chat button…

  22. SJ44

    Andrew,

Unfortunately, you can’t plan for injuries and develop players at the same time. That’s the delicate balance.

Cody Ransom can play SS or third for a couple of days if Jeter and/or Arod need rest or get dinged up.

If it was a longer injury (4-6 weeks), they would just bring Pena back to play SS.

He really needs to play in the minors to get the most out of his game.

  23. m

To the right of the screen, under the Friedrich ad.

  24. Dave

A HA! Thank you very much M. That was hard to see.

  25. Brandon... "Farve 3, NFL FRUSTRATED RETIRE ALREADY FANS 0"

Jesus and Manny Banuelos are going to the Futures game !

  26. Brandon W

I agree that Pena needs to get more ABs and playing time. To whoever said that playing every day at AAA wouldn’t help him like being in the majors would, wasn’t Pena at AA last year? He skipped AAA to be the utility guy. That says something about his potential (which will never be fulfilled if he is only ever a part time player from age 23 and onward). Also, having skipped AAA (and having only been in the bigs a few months), I’m sure more seasoning there would help him plenty.

Also, I find all of the complaining about the thoughts of Ransom playing kind of humorous. Remember during the offseason/ST when he was supposedly better than Alex? How did that work out for him?

That said, he’s a utility guy with some pop. Every team has a couple of those fringey utility guys; don’t expose him too much and he may come through every now and then when he’s called on to play.

“pcaldera twitter: CC, man of the people, just exited ATL lunch icon The Varsity, where burgers start at $1.44. This place is a gem!”

    I say CC had 2 burgers. :)

  28. hardwired

    Thanks, Pete.

Great array of questions, as well.

  29. Sean Serritella

Yeah, I was Sean From Morris Plains, yeah.

  30. Andrew

Anyone saying Ransom might have been better than Alex had to have been off their meds. Cody looked good during the Spring hitting BP fastballs and making some plays around 3rd. When the real games started he was an automatic out at the plate and a butcher at 3rd. He was overexposed by playing every day in A-Rod’s absence definitely, but for me a fringe utility guy should be aple to play D at the multiple positions he covers, not just pretend to.

Anyway, I’m sold on it being beneficial for El Nino to play every day at AAA even though I like him more on the Yankees’ bench. But I am not sold that Ransom is the answer in his place, regardless of his pop and versatility. This would be a completely trivial issue, in my mind, if A-Rod gets hot and puts the doubt about his health to rest (at least for a while).

  31. SJ44

The Varsity is a must stop when you are in Atlanta. Next to In-N-Out Burgers, the best burgers on the planet.

I think sometimes fans have overblown expectations from bench guys. Its the classic, backup QB syndrome.

A bench guy plays well for a few days and fans all of sudden project them into being something they are not.

Bench guys are bench guys for a reason. Their games do not hold up over the course of a full season.

Used sparingly? They are effective. Used everyday, much less so.

Cervelli is a classic example. He has played very, very well in his short bursts as a Yankee. However, he’s not a better player than Jorge Posada.

He’s a kid learning on the job and doing quite well so far. He also has the benefit of not being completely scouted out by the opposition.

If he played everyday, his bat would be exposed and he would be a liability to the team.

If this team was hitting like it should, you could carry a guy who isn’t a great hitter as your starting catcher. However, with the current state of the offense, they can’t carry the guy as an everyday player.

That said, he is certainly has positioned himself as the guy who will back up Posada, and probably play 60-70 games, next year.

Catcher of the future? It all depends on his bat. He doesn’t have to be Joe Mauer with the bat. He does however have to show the ability to hit good pitching.

Time will tell if he will do it well enough to be a starting catcher in the big leagues.

  33. Hokiehill

I think alot of people were just awe struck by Ransom’s vertical jump video and forgot that even guys like Berroa look good in ST…I know it was a small sample, but he was terrible at the start of the season. At least with Pena you get good defense. Hopefully Ransom can play up to his alleged defensive ability

  35. GreenBeret7

I’d look at Cervelli being to Posada as what Mike Redmond is to Joe Mauer. Good defensive catcher and a bat that’s nothing special but not embarrassing when he plays for a week.

  37. GreenBeret7

Atlanta, Savannah, Miami, NY, Austin and about 300 other cities….The best sandwiches/burgers are at Schlotzsky’s. All homemade breads, including sourdough. The Reubens are great.

  38. Bronx Jeers

Sorry folks but you can’t get a truly great burger at a restaurant that has a website.

And also sells chicken and hot dogs.

In & Out ? Not a bad chain but best burgers on the planet?

Pete, you need to work on eliminating the ummms in your dialogue. It’s a natural reaction during public speaking to want to fill every second with sound to keep your public’s attention but it’s unnecessary. Just practice getting comfortable with silent pauses in your answers, at first it will seem very awkward after a while you’ll get used to it and they will have the added effect of making your replies seem more thoughtful.
