The win that took quite a while

Peter Abraham
June

Somehow, that ended up with Mo getting a save. No. 499 for him.

What a mess.

But it seems the offense has returned. The Yankees have scored at least one run in 10 of the last 13 innings since Joe Girardi wad ejected in the sixth inning on Wednesday night. They have 19 runs on 26 hits in the last two games.

The Yankees had scored 18 runs in the seven games before that, losing five of them.

Don’t stay up late expecting a post-game wrap-up. I have an early flight home and a story to write.

Catch me on WFAN around 1:05 a.m. however.

    Have a great flight Pete!

Derek Jeter. 4 hits. That is all.

How many hours ago did you have this post written?

yay we won a series.. now we have to sweep the muts.

Damn on the fan at 1 am. Are you going to sleep? or is it one of those all nighters?

perhaps just as big was the struggles of John Smoltz.

With Daisuke down, they really wanted Smoltzy to step up. He may very well improve but he has more to prove now.

This prevents them from using Brad Penny as trade bait to add a quality prospect or decent bat to their lineup. It also puts pressure on Smoltz to step it up or Buchholz will be knocking on the door.

Again, Smoltz could improve for sure… but it was a nice first outing to see :)

PEte, did you really mean 1:00 a.m.??

Speaking of knocking on the door, Hughes should supplant Pettitte if he doesn’t become more consistent.

  10. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC

IMO, it would take quite a few outings like this to see that happen.

I suppose they could tell Pettitte he’s injured and he’s going on the DL for a bit… but they won’t outright replace him.

  12. Erica - newly OPPC

Who got player of the game?

I flipped to Michael Jackson coverage

Joe Girardi wad? I thought we weren’t calling people names, Pete?

I agree with Pete on Phil Hughes… put him in or send him down. I think he should go down and work as a starter. He’ll earn his place here soon enough.

You’re probably right, but I think it would be a mistake because Pettitte doesn’t appear to one of their best five starters.

He has been awful at home (5.77 ERA), but good on the road (2.35 ERA) before tonight. He may get marginaly better, while Hughes has a chance to improve dramatically.

    Ability should trump sentiment.

Who was player of the game yesterday?

  19. Erica - newly OPPC

Anyway, I am exhausted. I am going to attempt sleep even though, I put on Jackson coverage and it made me sad again.

    Night Yankee people!

no doubt about that, if Wang can get it together.

Still, Pettitte isn’t going to the pen and the pen is so much stronger with Hughes in it, for the time being.

They really need Andy to give them at least #5 starter stuff –

which in the AL East means roughly a 5.00 ERA.

So far he has done that… of course we hoped for better overall.

“now we have to sweep the muts.”

    —-

But if we have Hughes in there we get #3 type stuff out of our #5, making us stronger. Hughes impacts 1 or 2 games a week anyways with all the time off he gets. It makes more sense to put him in the rotation so he can touch more than half a game each time out than keep pitching him waiting for the ‘big game moment’ that you want a SHUT DOWN GUY.

    Especially with Bruney back.

I mean think about what Hughes has really done in the bullpen. He has been excellent but he hasn’t come in and saved the day. Thats why the Joba to the BP talk is insane. You have to get in some pretty sick leverage spots to really make a difference as a reliever.

“Pettite sucks and all he cares about is getting his base 5.5MM salary up to 12.5MM. Let bible boy go read scripture someplace else. What a joke”

I thought a realistic expectation for Andy coming into the season, if healthy (big IF) was about a 4.20 – 4.50 ERA.

    Andy is at 4.38.

I don’t know what the #s are for 2009 but the average #5 starter is typically north of a 5.00 ERA.

Sure, it would be nice if a 4.38 ERA meant a bunch of games with 6IP and 3ER…

    but that’s wishful thinking.

They need him to give them innings and keep them in games. I still think he can do that.

    We’ll see…

    Lg #1 #2 #3 #4 #5
    MLB 3.60 4.14 4.58 5.10 6.24
    AL 3.70 4.24 4.58 5.09 6.22
    NL 3.51 4.04 4.57 5.11 6.26

Just for reference, I forget what year this used but it was recent on hardballtimes

  30. m

The rotation is still out of whack. I don’t even know who’s pitching on any given day without looking it up.

Well, we won one game. Then two. Won the series and heading back north.

Let’s keep winning and put pressure on the Red Sox. Nice to gain on everyone but stupid Tampa who managed to score 10 unanswered runs against the world champions.

“But if we have Hughes in there we get #3 type stuff out of our #5, making us stronger. Hughes impacts 1 or 2 games a week anyways with all the time off he gets.”

    ———-

I think they need Hughes in the pen for now.

Once they can trade for a reliable bullpen arm, all bets are off.

At that point, in roughly a month, Andy will have had 5-6 more starts to either keep his spot or find his way to the DL so Hughes can step in.

We also don’t know what Wang will do in that timeframe either.

This team will make changes when the trade deadline nears.

At that point, major changes, if necessary, can be made.

Pettitte was awful what is Girardi smoking saying he battled. It seemed like every braves batter had a full count on Pettitte.

Lowe’s ERA before the game started translated to about a 5+ ERA in the AL. He looked good with the Dodgers last season, not so much this season.

  35. Boston Dave 2.0 - the kinder gentler version

    Jerkface,

    thanks for that.

I knew it was over 5 but didnt realize it was over 6!

Andy, after tonight’s dud, is at 4.38.

Give the guy a break. Consistency would be nice, sure.

But the “off with his head” chants are premature :)

  36. JUST A THOIGHT

Pssst, Yeah you,I got the 411 on the Mutts series.

Santanna pitched today against the Cards,so the Yankees won’t face him this series,

If the defense had done their job in the 4th, Pettitte’s out of that inning with no more than 65 pitches and an 8-2 lead. Blew that inning. A soft double down the left field line and the drive to right by Kotchman would have scored the run. anderson’s leadoff has to be caught by any of three fielders and the fly ball error by Gardner should have ended the inning.

  39. igotid88

Why not do like they did with Rivera in 96 with Hughes. Rivera pitched 107.2 innings that year in 62 games.

  40. GreenBeret7

Ouch. News on Nady doesn’t sound great. Made two throws from the outfield and took himself out after the second throw.

Ever since there error less streak was snapped, the yankees are playing some sloppy defense. Damon missing pop ups, Gardner error, Melky throwing error, Swisher missing Pedroia catch, Posada throwing balls into the outfield. They need to play better defense most of these plays are routine.

    not good at all.

I guess it’s up to Swisher and Matsui to carry their weight.

There is no bailout plan in sight.

Unless the plan is to keep him around as a DH/PH, his season is cooked. He may as well have the surgery. At best, he’d be a B level FA next year, after this setback.
