    So John Smoltz Is Just German for Daisuke Matsuzaka

    or German for Joba Chamberlain….very Joba like performance. Horribly first inning and settled in afterwards. While he got rocked last night he did show positive signs whether you’re an ESPN homer or not…

    horribly = horrible

    Hokie,

    Thats true, but the bottom line was that Smoltz was hyped beyond belief by ESPN and in Boston as well. People were talking about him like he was a 25 year old John Smoltz of old type ace.

    He sure didn’t look like an ace to me yesterday.

    I agree the love was ridiculous based on the performance…curious how that story would have gone had he been pitching for the Yankees…we can figure that out from listening to the discussions about Joba since we’ve had similar performances from him this season. The talk is always about lack of command, velocity, can he be a starter, etc because he has those bad early innings. Never about him settling in and pitching well. Of course Smoltz has a longer resume to lean on, but the comparison still highlights the ESPN bias towards the Sux

    “at the risk of sounding like randy l”
    “And, back to my inner randy l., if Cashman has noticed this, why not send Joba for some kind of examination?”

    doreen-

    i’m convinced that cashman simply doesn’t have enough good people around him because he’s afraid of talent around him that would be a threat to his power. i perceive him to be the lone ranger much of the time who simply has too much on his plate and doesn’t get to things that need to be done.

    the yankees thus become like the poorly run business down the street that everyone wonders why they don’t do the obvious to get better.

    as far as channeling your inner randy, it’s a good thing you’re doing your kettle bells and kick boxing because you may find that people may want to smack you from time to time :)

    “He sure didn’t look like an ace to me yesterday.”

    Me neither, but that’s not the expectation. What he’s basically being asked to do is be better than Matsuzaka was for half a season.

    Good for Andy Phillips. He’s a good guy. Always happy for, yet envious of, anyone who can get paid to play baseball.
