The promised land

Peter Abraham
June
27

A.J. Burnett lasted 2.2 innings and gave up five runs against the Red Sox on June 9.

He said afterward: “I’m not very consistent right now. I’m not a negative guy, so I’m not going to beat myself up over it. But when I do get on that run, it’s going to be impressive. I promise you that.”

His last three starts: 20.1 innings, 10 hits, one earned run, 10 walks, 26 strikeouts.

That’s delivering on your promise. Burnett has shaved his ERA from 4.89 to 3.93 and right now no team in baseball has a better 1-2 punch than do the Yankees.

  2. Rishi

    derosa traded

  3. Brandon... "R.I.P. King Of Pop"

    AJ sounds like a leader.

  4. m

Listening to AJ on the Fan (waiting for you, Pete).

He’s talking about pitching behind CC. “Inspired”.

  5. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    He was ON tonight.

Life is so much more wonderful when he’s pitching well and has an offense to back him up.

  6. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes

    Where’d he go, Rishi?

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

BTW, DeRosa’s gone @MLB Wow. Mark DeRosa is back in the NL Central! #cardinals just acquired him from CLE for RHP Chris Perez and player to be named later.

  8. Betsy

I love AJ’s positive attitude. At the time he made that comment, I thought it was kind of foolish – but on the other hand, he’s confident and I’d rather him be confident than otherwise.

His stuff looked nasty tonight from what I could see on clips – I think he even few a couple of changeups…I like that. It was adorable seeing him rub Pena’s head, lol

  9. m

    Rishi,

    Where? The Yankees? ;)

  10. Carl

Where did Derosa get traded to

  11. Rishi

    they haven’t said yet – on ESPN…BBT

  12. Fran (the original) and OPPC member

Great pitching by the Yankees the last two nights. Let’s hope that Wang can keep it going.

  13. C

Livan tomorrow we should be able to crush him always have.

  14. m

lol @ the cubs. They were trying to trade for him back.

  15. Rishi

looks like they tweeted it already…the Cardinals

BTW, Melky didn’t get a web gem for either of those catches…

  16. Brandon... "R.I.P. King Of Pop"

They traded Perez ? for Mark DeRosa ? DeRosa ?

WTH …W/e glad we didn’t do anything stupid.

  17. Betsy

Darn, DeRosa would have been a nice addition…..

I think AJ really liked pitching behind CC – he really did seem to be inspired. I wouldn’t mind seeing these two be a solid 1-2 punch…….

  18. Gary

    DeRosa to the Cardinals

  19. C

    mlb.com is not reporting anything

  20. Carl

Good pick up for the Cards

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

MLB report on DeRosa comes via official MLB twitter; they’re also talking about it on MLB network

  22. Yankfn

Sorry but, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are the best 1-2 punch this year.

By track record, we got a good one though.

  23. m

    Betsy,

Everyone was up in arms when I said that AJ would be behind CC. Truth be told Wang or AJ could pitch behind CC, but you don’t pick up the AJ to be your #3.

  24. Boogie Down Bob

Good pick up for the Cardinals. DeRosa is a nice player.

  25. Betsy

M, everyone was up in arms because they feel loyalty to Wang and because it’s true that Wang has been better than AJ in their careers. It doesn’t matter to me who follows who if they are all pitching well, but Wang is a long way away from his Cy Young type form and AJ is pitching great…….

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

“Sorry but, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are the best 1-2 punch this year.

By track record, we got a good one though.”

Most def. If their team had _anything_ that even remotely resembled an offense…

  27. Boogie Down Bob

Also, since the Yankees have won this series, I think it’d be a great idea to give A-Rod the night off tomorrow.

That would give him 2 consecutive days off and allow him to come into the next homestand pretty fresh.

I’m assuming Damon and Jeter will be back in the lineup, so we should have more than enough to sweep the Mets tomorrow night.

  28. vb03

We know AJ’s got the talent, he just needs the consistency to back it up. His ups are definitely impressive, of course.

  29. spiaget

indeed. AJ was definitely on point tonight

  30. C

“Sorry but, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are the best 1-2 punch this year.”

With a huge ballpark and facing the N.L West

  31. TurnTwo

*Most def. If their team had _anything_ that even remotely resembled an offense…*

which is why if they did get Manny, they might have had a chance against the Dodgers.

  32. Carl

Ken Griffey Jr. For dh next year :)

  33. Boogie Down Bob

If Wang gets things togehter, and he has shown signs that he’s moving in that direction, look out.

  34. Brandon... "R.I.P. King Of Pop"

A rental pick up, not even a FT player. They traded Chris Perez a 23 yr. old who could be thier next CL. Dumb.

  35. GreenBeret7

With the Cardinals getting Derosa, one of Ankiel, Ludwick or Schumaker will be moved shortly…probably Ludwick.

  36. Boogie Down Bob

Great to be playing winning baseball again. Seemed like yesterday that people on this blog were declaring Burnett a bust after his poor start at Fenway.

  37. Ed - almost to my quarter century life

“Ken Griffey Jr. For dh next year”

Griffey hates the Yanks, so no he won’t be signing with us next season.

  38. S.A.--The sun will come out tomorrow; I'm down with the OPPC

    AJ was great today.

  39. Brandon... "R.I.P. King Of Pop"

That’s what they traded plus a PTBNL.

“Ken Griffey Jr. For dh next year ”
And bring back bernie to play CF :)

  42. TurnTwo

*With the Cardinals getting Derosa, one of Ankiel, Ludwick or Schumaker will be moved shortly…probably Ludwick.*

Ludwick was allegedly the centerpiece of a discussed Holliday deal, i think.

  43. GreenBeret7

Don’t kid yourself, Brandon, Derosa is a fulltime player, jusy like Randy Velarde was.

  44. C

“Griffey hates the Yanks, so no he won’t be signing with us next season.”

i think it was a joke

  45. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

I dunno about you guys, but I’d take Ludwick for the right price.

  46. Brandon... "R.I.P. King Of Pop"

“Don’t kid yourself, Brandon, Derosa is a fulltime player, jusy like Randy Velarde was.”

For a future CL ? GB that’s a freaking rental. W/E I’m just glad he didn’t land here. WOOT !

  47. miggs

Usually Pete posts when he’s going on WFAN.

Where did you guys hear that?

  48. C

Wang tmr its about time he turns it around

  49. Boogie Down Bob

Curious to hear what people’s thoughts are re:Ramiro Pena.

I happen to love the kid, especially his glove. Not sure if we’re best served keeping him up or sending him down so he can play every day.

    Your thoughts?

  50. Carl

    C June 27th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Wang tmr its about time he turns it around

He had 62 pitches through 6 against the Braves. I think hes only gonna get better.

  51. Carl

Tony Paige said Pete would be on at the start of his show.

  52. GreenBeret7

Rebecca, as bad as he’s hitting right now, they won’t be asking for much. They certainly won’t get a Holliday type player for him. The Cards have him, Ankiel and Derosa all as FAs this year.

  53. C

“Curious to hear what people’s thoughts are re:Ramiro Pena.

I happen to love the kid, especially his glove. Not sure if we’re best served keeping him up or sending him down so he can play every day.

    Your thoughts?”

I dont think Pena would be a full time SS he might be like Alex Cora so i dont think he needs to play everyday

  54. C

“He had 62 pitches through 6 against the Braves. I think hes only gonna get better.”

maybe that is bad for him since hes a sinker ball pitcher

He was getting a lot of ground ball outs though.

  56. GreenBeret7

Correction: The Cards will ask a lot for Ludwick, they just won’t get it.

  57. C

would be nice to see wang have a CG tomorrow

  58. Boogie Down Bob

    C,

I couldn’t agree more. It would do wonders for his confidence and greatly enhance the Yankees chances of winning the division if he gets it going.

  59. miggs

“Tony Paige said Pete would be on at the start of his show.”

Well Carl that doesn’t make much sense… Paige has been on air for an hour and Pete hasn’t been on.

  60. Johnny D.

I’m still nervous about Wang tomorrow.

  61. Erica - newly OPPC

Great game tonight folks. I am off to bed. Good night Yankee people :-)

Well Carl that doesn’t make much sense… Paige has been on air for an hour and Pete hasn’t been on.

Tony Paige said Pete would be on later in the night when Tony’s show started.

  63. Ooh!

Did I just see a HR on a bunt with two errors? Has that ever happened before?

  64. TurnTwo

after moving DeRosa, i guess the question is, if the Indians are officially sellers, what else might they have on their active roster that could be of value to contending teams, other than Cliff Lee?

  65. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Boogie Down: As long as A-Rod’s not 100% healthy, keep him up here, just in case.

But if the yanks can afford it, send him to AAA so he can play.

  66. rconn23

No Posada Truthers tonight? Funny how that works.

  67. Sweet_Lou_in_Vermont

    Johnny D. June 27th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

I’m still nervous about Wang tomorrow.
    =============

If (and it’s a big IF) Wang has a bad outing tomorrow, I think we’ll see Hughes the next time around.

  68. C

we are going to face King Felix… hes having a monster season

  69. Boogie Down Bob

    TurnTwo,

The only guy I can think of would be Victor Martinez, but I’d be shocked if they traded him.

  70. C

“after moving DeRosa, i guess the question is, if the Indians are officially sellers, what else might they have on their active roster that could be of value to contending teams, other than Cliff Lee?”

Indians have alot of stars it depends on if they are willing to trade them

  71. Carl

I don’t think we face Felix.

  72. Rishi

per Yankees.com, Felix is not projected for this series

    Morrow, Washburn, Vargas

  74. Nick in SF in Petaluma

Oh m, always trying to pick fights about your pet pitchers! Up in arms! ;)

AJ looks great – when he looks great. If he keeps it up he really will be the #2 on this team. I hope he can do it.

  75. Boogie Down Bob

13 games left before the All-Star break…I’m thinking 9-4 would be a huge success.

Although those trips to Minnesota and LA aren’t going to be easy.

  76. m

    Nick,

LOL. You would think that level-headed fans wouldn’t use such a small sample-size to judge a new acquisition. But alas, those are few and far between on the LoHud.

    Morrow, Washburn, Vargas

    ————————————————————

The rumors have the “Doggers” wanting to get Washburn to bolster their rotation. No word on what Seattle wants back, but, I’d think they’d want offense. They’;; need a third baseman in about 2 days, though. Beltre will be out 10-12 weeks with shoulder surgery.

  78. m

@SI_JonHeyman Maybe he’ll Twitter the details instead of just jabbing the Yankees. in reply to SI_JonHeyman 3 hrs ago

haha. Is this about John Henry’s getting married?

  79. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Burnett’s no-hit bid…

    Posada and Swish slugging…

    Amazin’s in awe…

  80. sar515

Interesting to note that there were about 500 fewer posts on tonight’s thread…

With a one-hitter and all around good performance…I guess the trolls hide in their cave.

    SWEEEEEEP!

  81. Nick in SF in Larkspur

m: I hear you on the small sample size! Heck, I remember right after Phil Hughes’ first start, one LoHud commenter said that Phil and AJ were the only starters we could count on for the postseason. Wild, wacky stuff.

  82. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    I don’t always pen…

Haiku, but when I do, I…

    Prefer el Beisbol…

  83. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Didn’t Morrow one-hit or two-hit us last year?

  84. m

Hmmm. That person must’ve been drunk…They left out Andy, who has a good post-season record. :)

  85. Nick in SF in Larkspur

    second-half pitcher
    will Andy see October?
    please stop barking, back

  86. RS

“Sorry but, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are the best 1-2 punch this year.”

Verlander and Edwin Jackson have been amazing as well. So have King Felix and Bedard (2.47 ERA before he got hurt).

  87. RS

Anyone else feel like Wang is the last piece of the puzzle right now? I mean, people always want to tinker with the team, whether it’s adding an extra bat for the bench or a bullpen arm, but that’s something all contenders try to do mid-season.

I really like how all aspects of the team are looking right now, but IMO we just need Wang to string together a few good starts in a row. Imagine the confidence not only he would gain, but that the rest of the team would gain in his starts. I remember he used to always get such great run support, but this year the entire team has looked flat in his starts. I badly want to get back to that time when the Yankees felt like they were going to win every time Wang was on the mound. If we can get Wang on a roll, then the Yankees are truly capable of rolling off a huge hot streak, because everything else is going right now.
