Here is the link to this morning’s interview I did on WFAN with Kim Jones and Adam Getstenhaber.
Considering it was 8:05 a.m. I was reasonably coherent.
Thanks to Adam and Kim for having me on. It was fun.

Pete:
solid interview. I think Kim likes you : )
Good interview Pete – I listened on the way into work.
Awesome Job Pete
There’s obviously something going on between Pete and Kim. They both mention each other too frequently on their blogs for this to be a purely professional relationship…
Crazy Man:
Your name is accurate, because that is crazy. She covers the team, I cover the team. Calm down.
Good interview, you are obviously comfortable with live on air work.
How about going on Mad Dog Radio?
Really enjoyed your comments on FAN. Don’t hesitate to plug your next interview.
Just listened to the interview. Good job Pete. I also think that Kim does a really good job when she co-hosts on the FAN.
Very nice spot Pete.
Kim does a nice job hosting shows.
If Francesa wasn’t such an ego maniac, he would realize she would add a lot to his show as a co-host.
He’s probably afraid that since she’s more knowledgable about football and the Yankees than he is would take away from his star.
Wrong way to think since his show is unlistenable right now with him droning on over 5 hours per day.
Mad Dog Radio?
I’d like to go on a station that somebody actually listens to or with somebody who knows something about the Yankees. So, no.
OK
But you have already been on Mike and Mike.
Don’t forget that Russo has a long term contract, so Mad Dog radio could take off.
Are you saying that you would turn them down?
I’d listen to Francesa again if he had Jones on regularly. They made a good combo when she appeared with him a few times — she knows a lot (which shows much more when she talks sports than when she interviews players, where she does not excel at all), yet she didn’t appear to be trying to show him up. If anything she made him better.
“If Francesa wasn’t such an ego maniac, he would realize she would add a lot to his show as a co-host.
He’s probably afraid that since she’s more knowledgable about football and the Yankees than he is would take away from his star”
100% on target.
it is also why Max Kellerman is not on the show.
Francessa really needs to move to Boston. He would fit like a glove, up there. New Yorkers don’t like arrogance, and Francessa is the king of arrogance
star? yeah right
You are right that Russo is deficient in Yankee knowledge and has an unnatural affection for tennis. But that Al Pacino voice may do the trick, if anyone outside NY can understand his accent.
I know it’s your job, but you really do a fantastic one Pete. Kim covers the Yanks just as much as you and it was easy to see how much she respects your opinion and defers to you on some topics. Not to take anything away from Kim, she’s great too. Excellent work my friend.
Pete that was one of the best radio interviews I’ve heard in a long time. Free and easy conversation, good rapport between you and Kim and Adam. Good topics. Hit on a lot of good stuff.
Thanks for linking to it. I don’t listen to radio in the house.
(But, I have to say, jokingly, “Petey” ????
)
That’s a novel idea, guy-girl show for talking sports. Kind of like Regis and Kathy Lee… Wasn’t Kim on with another guy when she was on with Francessa? I’d enjoy Kim and Mike, but what would really make the show work is if they liked different teams. That’s really what made Mike and the Mad Dog successful for all those years.
New Yorkers don’t like arrogance then they need to look in the mirror because they don’t like themselves.
give mike the boot and have a Pete and Kim radio show…
Actually, I think Francesa likes Kim Jones which is why he has her do spots on his show every now and then. Can she be his cohost while still doing the pregame show for YES? Unlike Kay, she has material that needs to get ready for the pregame with interviews and such while Kay just has to broadcast the game.
Kim is good on WFAN. Unless she was giving up her Yankee gig, being on with Francessa would be tough to do.
She’s working in the afternoon from April through October and is out of NY as much as in it during those months.
Maybe her schedule has more to do with her not work with Francesa than his ego.
Pete- don’t take teasing about Kim so serious. Lighten up, it’s just a blog.
“New Yorkers don’t like arrogance then they need to look in the mirror because they don’t like themselves”
I don’t agree with that.
live in the south, and you will learn what arrogance is.
Acutally Vinny, nobody likes arrogance. But it’s everywhere. Probably moreso in New York than anywhere else because New York has the most people.
Pete -
Nice job on that interview. You have a nice rapport with Kim and Adam. Easy flowing conversation, hitting a lot of good topics. One of the best radio interviews I’ve heard in a while.
Thanks for linking – I don’t listen to radio while I’m at home – mostly in the car.
(But I did have to giggle when Kim called you “Petey.” )
I think Kim Jones does an excellent job when she is on the radio; I also think her pre-game “Innerviews” are pretty good. It’s the post-game stuff that’s kind of vanilla, but I think that’s kind of the nature of the beast.
SJ44
I’m starting to think you’re right about Hughes IF Girardi can find him some more opportunities to pitch.
Right now he’s at 67 IP (19.1 in the minors, 46.2 in the majors). If he can somehow get another 60 IP in the majors this year that gives him 127 for the year which is acceptable. Then in 2010 he can bump that up over 160 which is perfectly fine for a fifth starter.
Now my question is, how does Hughes get those 60 innings? There are 87 games left over 3 months. That means he needs to throw ~20 innings per month. It’s doable but Girardi is going to have to make sure his arm isn’t put at risk.
I’m still not convinced he will be able to throw spot starts here and there but if he can get 20 innings a month out of the pen, I’m all for it.
Nice job on the FAN Pete. Did Burnett actually throw 130 pitches the other day? Man, I really was in a fog.
Steve B, he only threw 108 vs the Mets. They were discussing what pitch count he would have needed if he was going for the no-hitter. It could have caused a dilemma if he was still no-hitting the mets through 7 or 8 but had a huge pitchcount.
I’ll try one last time. Maybe the 4th is a charm.
Great radio interview, Pete. Thanks for linking to it; I never listen to radio in my home, only in my car. Nice rapport among the three of you, with easy flowing conversation on some good topics.
I like Kim Jones. Her Innerviews are very good and whenever I do catch her on radio, she’s been impressive. Post-game’s not my favorite, but I think the vanilla-ness of post-games is the nature of the beast.
Nice Job Pete!
Adam the Bull RIPS!!!! He is gonna take off soon!
I have a suggestion for the Yankees:
replace John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman with Pete Abraham and Kim Jones.
What would your home run call be, Pete?
Thanks Patrick.
Wonder whether that’s a true dilemma. Figure with an offday Monday, you let him go for the no-no even if it means 130.
““New Yorkers don’t like arrogance then they need to look in the mirror because they don’t like themselves”
I don’t agree with that.
live in the south, and you will learn what arrogance is.”
I’ve lived in every section of this nation except the west coast which is where I’m heading next, when I retire in a few years and trust me, arrogance is moreso in NYC (my hometown) than anywhere else.
Burnett threw 108 pitches the other day.
I think you and Kim Jones would be a HUGE upgrade over Sterling and Waldman. Then again, an unopened can of tuna and an oscillating fan might be an upgrade over Sterling and Waldman on some days…
Hey Pete,
I heard you on WFAN this morning. It was nice to listen to the station and here about the Yankees. All they ever talk about on WFAN in the morning are the Mets. It is annoying! Oh well they talk about the Yanks when the team is playing poorly but that’s it! You did a great job!

Regarding Hughes’ pitch count — if he doesn’t get to 150 during the season and post-season, can’t he play in the AFL as he did last fall and pick up another 20-30 innings there? Do the AFL innings count for Verducci?
Do you think the Yankees care about Verducci’s theory?
Listening now Pete. Good job.
Btw- Girardi did say the Yankees won’t carry three catchers. However, how many times have we quoted something Girardi said, and then later on that day wach him do the total opposite?
Recent examples:
1) Alex will have a day off against the Braves
2) Johnny Damon has the flu and will not play in the finale against the Mets
These are just the two I can think of off the top of my hand, I know there were more last week

****
Pete and Kim do seem to have chemistry. I can totally imagine them as the new broadcasters
No disrespect to Tom Verducci but, you don’t design your pitching development to fit his theory.
Look at how they used Mariano in ‘95 and ‘96 and that’s your “formula” for Hughes.
Can they get him to 120-130? Absolutely.
I think the Yankees care about Hughes’ arm and I do believe they count AFL innings. However, I am not certain, and for some reason I remember them NOT counting Joba’s hawaiian league numbers.
They might not be following Verducci’s theory word for word but they are definitely trying to progressively increase Hughes’ innings. It might be pointless to do the AFL again if he’s spent the entire season getting major league hitters out–I hope they find a way for him to stretch out and spot-start in August and September. I can’t believe that Pettitte and Burnett will go all year without needing to miss a start, and I do think Joba will hit a point where he needs to be removed from the rotation for a turn due to innings concerns.
Plus Phil will hopefully be logging some innings in October as a reliever. So, I think he will hit his magic number.
Swisher could bring a whole new meaning to ‘hurricane season” in the Dominican Republic in November.

Article in praise of Girardi…
I believe Hughes is no longer eligible for the Arizona Fall League. He’d have to go to winter ball.
Teams might not specifically stick to the “Verducci Rule” but many have inning/ pitch target increments that they find allowable.
For what its worth, I think Cash has said he doesn’t want young pitchers to increase their innings total by more than 30 innings because that’s what the research shows.
SJ44,
I’m not suggesting you develop your pitchers based on Verducci’s theory (which actually wasn’t created by him, he just talks about it the most).
However, it is probably a good idea to slowly ramp up the innings of a young pitcher year to year.
Getting Hughes to 120-130 innings this year would mean he has to throw 20 innings in July, August and September. Is it possible? I’m sure it is, I’m just not as confident as you are that it can be done without abusing his arm.
If he can get to that number I’m all for keeping him in the pen. But can he? I’m not too sure and the way he’s used in July will tell us a lot. Now that Girardi is more free to use him on non-Wang days we will see how much he is utilized.
120-130 innings this year means something over 160 next year which is fine out of a fifth starter.
Just to be clear here, I’m now AGREEING with you SJ44…
This obsession with innings totals is just plain silly. If he stays in the pen Hughes will get close to 120 pitching two innings twice a week… it’s not that tough.
2009 is the first priority. If they get to post-season Phil will get some more innings there, too.

My comments earlier weren’t to imply that I think Girardi is doing a bad job. I just think he ummm, changes his mind a lot.
Here’s another fine example-
When they sent Hughes to the bullpen they said he would not come in during the middle of an inning. I don’t remember which game, but this week he did come in mid-inning
The point I am making is, right now Girardi is saying that when Molina returns they will not carry 3 pitchers. However, I will not be surprised if he “changes his mind”

Just sharing an article – I didn’t read your earlier post…came across something I thought others might enjoy
“Just to be clear here, I’m now AGREEING with you SJ44…”
Patrick,
It wasn’t too long ago that SJ44 agreed with you about Hughes going back to the minors to start so people changing their minds here is not unusual.
Take away Wakefield’s surprising 10 wins and Nick Green’s unexpected good play and where is Boston ? How long before the hitter’s grapevine has their bullpen figured out ?
When all is considered, it’s the Rays overall balance, team speed, and run production that’s the top concern for Boston and knowing the earlier 0-8 record vs. the Yankees will not mean the same in August and September.
The Yankees can’t afford to carry three catchers with Arod needing rest every now and then and Matsui unable to play the outfield.
Patrick, 20 innings is a little much for any reliever. Most relievers throw between 80 to 100 innings a year which equates to about 13 to 16 innings a month. I would think Hughes would be in jeopardy of hurting himself if he had to throw 20 out of the bullpen.
Is that written in stone that a player can’t jump from 100 innings to 160? Or is it that you don’t want them to jump to 200. Wasn’t Verducci’s report predicated on the fact that innings jumps to 200 leads to injury?
Girardi says too many things as “absolutes” instead of “plans”. They planned to not bring Hughes in, but found it necessary.
As for Alex resting against Atlanta he wasn’t thinking. Alex had Friday, Saturday (except for PH) and Monday off, so there was no reason for another day off. He’ll probably DH at least once in the next six games.

They have Pena AND Random on the roster right now. One of them could easily go
Oops- Ransom is not Random (pardon my typo above)
I think Cervelli needs to bat more and I think the Yankees agree with me which is why he’s going back to Scranton. Unlike Hughes, who has nothing to prove at Scranton except getting enough innings this year, Cervelli still needs to work on his game as a hitter.
Pena and Ransom are both more useful than a 3rd catcher would be. A third catcher only makes sense if two of the three are standout offensive players and that’s clearly not the case.
Only way they should more Pena or Ransom would be the acquisition of a RH bat, ideally a RF candidate…. but I do not expect it to happen.
I wonder if the doctors consider Alex DHing as a day off.
Also, I think they like Pena as a pinch runner and Ranson doesn’t have any options so they’ll lose him.
The point I am trying to make, is that while I may be wrong- but I am not conviced the Yankees won’t go this route.
There is certainly an argument that Cervelli should be sent back to SWB for further development, but he has been really popular since joining the team. I am not sure the Yankees will be so ready to see him go.
And the argument “Well, Girardi says they aren’t carrying 3 catchers” means nothing to me.
————->
Thank you so much Brandon for guiding the way
Fran, considering they made him cut down on his swings and extra BP, I would think DH’ing wouldn’t be considered a day off.
Cervelli being popular isn’t going to save him from being shipped back to Scranton if the Yankees determined he’s in need for further development. Only fans and the media think in those terms. The Yankees need to make sure that Cervelli can handle the backup role next season because they won’t have Molina then.
I think in the last two months or so Cervelli has more than proven he can carry the back-up role. He kind of carried the team from behind the batters box when Posada and Molina both hit the DL at the same time.
3 catchers kind of clogs up your bench. I can recall a very limited number of times were the Yanks did it (as recent as last year btw) But, it was only because one catcher was hurt (Posada).
If you carry Cervelli, when does he play? Do you put him ahead of Molina to catch 1 or 2 days a week? Not a very smart baseball decision. The team and Cervelli would benefit from Cisco getting reps in Scranton.
DB
I agree with you. I think he would need a full day off.
As Pete said, Cervelli will be up soon enough when they expand the rosters. Hopefully they give him a shot at the backup spot next year. You just can’t justify benching a guy you are paying 2 mil with tons of experience for a kid who, let’s face it, still has similac on his lips.
Carrying this on to the new thread-
“I think in the last two months or so Cervelli has more than proven he can carry the back-up role. He kind of carried the team from behind the batters box when Posada and Molina both hit the DL at the same time.”
I’ve seen too much baseball in the last 50 years to believe what 60 something at-bats cloud my judgement especially considering how few at-bats Cervelli had in the minors. He’s been in the Yankee minors since 2005 and has about 700 at-bats. Not enough at-bats in my opinion.
On Alex and being the DH… no, it’s not the same as a day off, but he just had Monday off. I think he should have one day a week completely off and another day when he only DHs.
On Cervelli the only way he stays is if the Yankees move Molina once he’s healthy. You don’t carry three catchers unless two of them can really hit and at least one can play other positions… that does not apply to this situation.
The Yankees (and most other teams) absolutely abide by the 30 inning rule. So I’m not sure what some of you are talking about.

Pete,
Funny and accurate.
Nobody gets it.
Great job on the FAN today Pete, really enjoyed the interview. I also agree that Kim would be great if she had a regular show, but I think she would be dominated by Mike F’s overwhelming ego. He would put a clinic on everyday on how to be condescending if she joined the show.
good job on the radio gig Pete. (I refuse to call you Petey)
I can’t believe all the teasing you are getting on this Kim Jones chemistry thing.
Just because Michael Kay’s Wiki page no longer says he lives with Ms. Jones, people jump to crazy conclusions!
“(Mad Dog Radio?

LOL!
Kim Jones needs to have her own radio show. She is easy on the eyes and easy on the ears.
