My city in ruins

Here are two photos I just took of the old Stadium. The grand old place now has a black shroud around it as workers prepare to further dismantle it.

Those in that business would know better than I, but I imagine this is to cut down on the dust and debris on the site.photo

We’ll miss it. So weird seeing it without the seats too.

Kay just teased the audience and said that something very positive happened last night to the Yanks that hasn’t happened in a couple of years.

My guess is that he’ll talk about A-Rod turning on that high and tight fastball and launching it 450 ft.

So my prediction is that Kay will say A-Rod hasn’t done anything like that since his 2007 MVP season and he looks like he’s about to go on a rampage.

Just my guess where Kay is going.

  3. Jerkface

Josh Beckett, true ace, is most likely going to pitch 8 or a CG Loss. Savin that bullpen. What a hero.

  4. Bob(the original)

Still hard to believe it’s gonna be gone soon.

I posted this in the morning after the thread was dead. It seems I’ve been posting in limbo lately as no one responds to my questions / comments but GB7 was nice enough to give a think to it.

That’s why you don’t stack lefties in a lineup. It leaves you vulnerable for the lefty specialist matchup in a key situation later in the game.

Thats one of the reasons Cano is batting 5th. When you throw a switch hitter in that spot it’s hard to break up the lefties legitametely. I think Girardi takes it a little too far but for all intents and purposes it’s really not that big a deal unless everyone is in a funk. (circa 1 week ago)

    – - – - – – - – - — – - – - – - -

It seems Girardi wants a lefty in the 5 hole be it Cano or Matsui.

Does anyone recall a lineup were he hasn’t done this? It was his main reason to put Jeter at leadoff.

  6. Johnny D.

If the new stadium wasn’t such a great tribute to the REAL old Yankee Stadium, I’d be more concerned, but I just love the new place.

Guiseppe, let me know what his cliffhanger was. I must admit, that it one of my big pet peeves with 1050 ESPN, every announcer has to leave a cliff hanger before a commercial. It’s quite annoying.

  8. Jerkface

Swisher and Damon have nearly the same OBP. Who would you rather have up with men on base? Or how about a man on second with two outs?

You’d be crazy to pick Swisher because those in context game situations – the context in which empirical runs and not abstract linear regression runs – are scored favor Damon’s skill set way over Swishers. It’s not even close.

This kind of situation is why I advocate moving Swisher to the 2 spot. So far they’ve both actually seen about an equal amount of ABs per game with RISP, but I feel like there is a greater chance for Damon to see more in the 5 spot (which is true, Cano has had 1.74 chances per game with RISP, swish and damon 1.55)

It can also just be a FEEL thing. I feel like Swisher being told ‘just get on base’ because he has Tex and A-rod behind him to pick him up might do him some good.

Additionally, Damon being told to knock em in will do him equal good.

Yeah, that’s exactly what is was. He talked about A-Rod’s bomb and turning on that high and tight fastball.

He said he hasn’t done that in a couple of years. If he’s hitting like that – he’s going to have a monster season.

  10. 86w183

Maybe he’s going to announce that John Sterling didn’t screw up a play, player or rule for the entire game — but it’s been a lot more than two years since that happened.

  11. Stacey

it’s a real shame they’re knocking the place down and not leaving anything in place.

this is what they should do:

  12. Jerkface

Swisher doesn’t just get on base a lot. He hits for power, too. He rates about the same among AL hitters in both OBP and SLG. People who think Swisher is just all about getting on base do not know what they are talking about.

And when you take the season so far as a whole, Swisher has been an above average player this year so far. The previous sentence is a simple statement of fact and cannot be validly disputed.

    —–

Wave your hat, Well I talked to some scouts who said Swisher is having a deceptive season and that he actually stinks. See, where are you precious stats now? I’ve got the opinion of an old guy.

See, I can play this game all day.

  13. Bob(the original)

    I’m in absolute shock here.

Could the Orioles be getting ready to actually take a series against the Red Sox? Amazing.

  14. SJ44

No, that’s not what I said. Reading comprehension is one of your big weaknesses.

You are trying to sell Swisher as a better player than he is.

You are even trying to sell him as a better baserunner than Johnny Damon. Which is laughable.

He got traded for Wilson Betemit for God Sakes. If he was the “above average player” you think he is, don’t you think he would have gone for more?

All I’ve said throughout this entire debate is that Pro-Swisher people overrate his OBP and use it to mask his weaknesses as a player.

When you start extolling the virtues of a guy who is a bad baserunner, based on a foolish metric, that’s when you lose me in your evaluation of his skills.

  15. Jerkface

But he just isn’t a bad baserunner. Thats your perception of him because you remember some bad plays. Over the course of the season he will run the bases like an average baseball player. And who a guy is trade for means nothing. Maybe the yankees are better evaluators than the white sox?

Curt Schilling was traded for Casey Fossum, is ANY player that gets traded for Fossum the Possum any good? No. I reckon not.

Kenny Williams knew that Swisher was not going to last on the white sox, oZzie guillen did not like Swisher and was misusing him in centerfield and leading off.

The thing with Swisher is that he is not a player you depend upon. He is a player that will enhance the area of the lineup you place him in. Like said before, you want him passing the baton to good hitters, not Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera.

Now that was just wrong. George Sherrill, come on down! PLEASE.

  18. DB

5 – 3 now really? Baltimore can’t implode for 2 more runs can they?

  19. Mista SoxyPants

//Josh Beckett, true ace, is most likely going to pitch 8 or a CG Loss. Savin that bullpen. What a hero.//

Unfortunately for you the Yankees have to go to the West coast while the Sox play 10 home games against 3 last place teams all before the all star break.

Most likely you will be in forth place looking up 10 games out when we all break for the all star game!

    …much to your dismay

  20. trisha - OPPC lifetime member

    At least it didn’t affect Bergesen’s ERA…

Hopefully he wins the game and Sherrill gets the save.

  21. vb03

Talk about a useless appearance. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Jim Johnson!

“Baltimore can’t implode for 2 more runs can they?”

    No.

    :)

  23. T15D23

    Depressing and completely unnecessary.

I’m still amazed there is no outrage that the House That Ruth Built is being destroyed.

  24. Largo

“Curt Schilling was traded for Casey Fossum, is ANY player that gets traded for Fossum the Possum any good? No. I reckon not.”

I’m guessing that the point about Swisher being traded for Betemit is that Chicago couldn’t get anything better from any other major league team – so it would seem that most of the real GMs didn’t value Swisher very highly either.

  25. trisha - OPPC lifetime member

    GORGEOUS curve balls by Sherrill!!

  26. trisha - OPPC lifetime member

Good lord is Sherrill dealing. Seriously, his stuff is amazing today.

    Let’s go O’s!

As long as the O’s take the game, the drama makes the loss even nicer.

Did someone blindfold Sherrill? He was just dealing up a storm!!!!!!!

  30. Lauren

ugh – its like a death shroud! :(

    perfect thread title pete.

    JOBBED on thst pitch…

  32. Doreen

There is nothing wrong with Swisher being an average player who can contribute a lot to the team. Not everyone is above average, or there’d be no average, ya know?

I suspect there’s no “outrage” about the stadium, because Steinbrenner never made a secret out of his desire to have a new one at some point. There is some consolation that the new stadium is still in the Bronx and not lost in the Meadowlands (unreachable) somewhere and that it does pay homage to the old stadium.

The structure itself sure doesn’t look like it needed to be replaced, but I’ll tell ya – the new stadium, with whatever its flaws may be, is comfortable and modern.

Did anyone participate in the Save Gate 2 activities yesterday?

    No Way.

Would you agree with the state of the Yankees pitching that carrying Tomko is wasting a roster spot? They guy has piched 12 innings in seven games over the last 32 games and in five of them the game was one sided when he came in.

I’d rather keep both Pena and Ransom or add Duncan or some RH bat than a 12th pitcher who really isn’t needed.

  39. Johnny D.

    Midget pops up. HAHA!

Bye bye Yankee Stadium. I am glad I got to visit once.
