  1. Laura - All we are saying is give Wang a chance! July 3rd, 2009 at 7:34 am

It would be nice if just once, we could beat Halladay. He’s lost twice this year so it can be done. I’m tired of losing to that guy. And having Wang go up against him is kinda cruel.

  2. Ruhi Cant July 3rd, 2009 at 7:55 am

Looks like sweep for the Jays.

  3. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 8:05 am

    Pete,
Can you ask Cashman if more IFA signings are coming besides the ones announced yesterday?

  4. Fran (the original) and OPPC member July 3rd, 2009 at 8:12 am

A Friday afternoon game. Don’t ever remember one of those.

  5. Paco Dooley July 3rd, 2009 at 8:44 am

Ouch, Wang against Halladay. Not a friendly set of matchups.

  6. Chris July 3rd, 2009 at 8:53 am

This is the Yankees chance to make good showings against an AL East team and rid themselves of some demons.
Halladay is human and can be beaten.

  7. Joekuh – The Wang will live to sink again! July 3rd, 2009 at 8:59 am

Geez 5 posts and already someone is calling a Jays sweep. Nice to see your support for the team. I’ll take a split of this series and be happy. Hopefully Wang has the sinker on Sunday.

Since they went to a signing date virtually all international FA sign on that day. Looks like the Yanks got a shortstop, RHP and perhaps a catcher who projects as an outfielder. They also signed their second round pick, so that’s an iprovement on the 2008 draft.

Will be interesting to see if any of these guys turn out to be much. I assume they’ll start out in the Golf Coast League.

Joekuh — There are those who post such things simply to get attention. They are best ignored.

  10. Hokiehill July 3rd, 2009 at 9:07 am

how often is it that every game in a 4 game series starts at 1:05? I’m sure it happens more than I think, but it just seems odd…

  11. Hokiehill July 3rd, 2009 at 9:07 am

86w183, they send emails too, some one should give your advice to Pete based on the last post…

“A Friday afternoon game. Don’t ever remember one of those.”

    April 17th vs. Cleveland.

Here is the scouting report on Sanchez from Baseball America:

The top catching prospect available for July 2, Sanchez flashes plus tools on offense and defense, though he still has plenty of work to do to refine those tools. Swinging from an open stance, Sanchez shows plus power and gets good extension with his swing, which leads to impressive batting practice displays. Some scouts see a disconnect between what Sanchez does in BP compared to what he does against live pitching, but he has good bat speed and power.

He has plus arm strength and a quick release, which is why scouts have recorded his pop times at 1.8 seconds. Some scouts say Sanchez is a good athlete for a catcher (he’s an average to solid-average runner right now, though he’ll be below-average as he fills out), but some scouts have concerns about Sanchez’s body and say he will have to stay on top of his conditioning. Sanchez has some of the tools to be a good defensive catcher, but at 16 he’s still not a lock to stick behind the plate, as his receiving skills and footwork still need to catch up.

    Hokiehill — agreed

  15. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:13 am

Where is the link to the Yankees signing their 2nd round draft choice?

  16. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:14 am

I take whatever BA has to say about prospects with a grain of salt.

  17. 86w183 July 3rd, 2009 at 9:19 am

I don’t think there is a link, but I know it to be true.

Why a gain of salt with BA? No one is flasless, but you have a better source for independent scouting?

  18. S.A.--It's a marathon, not a sprint July 3rd, 2009 at 9:20 am

    Saturday: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (1-6, 10.06) vs. RHP Roy Halladay (10-2, 2.56), 1:05 p.m., YES

    ===============

That will be an interesting match-up

  19. 86w183 July 3rd, 2009 at 9:20 am

    “Flawless”

  20. Hokiehill July 3rd, 2009 at 9:21 am

Cash, life in general should be taken with a grain of salt…for example, I take the idea that I should work a full day today with a grain of salt…

  21. Joe from Long Island July 3rd, 2009 at 9:22 am

This series with Toronto is going to be tough. I thought for sure they would suffer from the loss of their starters to injuries, but Richmond, Tallet, and Romero (heard he’s got a great change up) have really outperformed expectations. And of course Halladay.

The Yanks seem impressed enough with Sanchez to give him $3M. That’s using their cash advantage, the opportunity to take a risk in the IFA market. The Chapman business is going to be something else. I can see them using the same strategy as they used for CC – big offer up front to blow everyone else away, and get it done. None of this posting nonsense.

  22. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:25 am

“I don’t think there is a link, but I know it to be true.

Why a gain of salt with BA? No one is flasless, but you have a better source for independent scouting?”

How do you know it’s true?

None of these places are independent scouting, they’re fed information from certain teams for whatever reasons that benefits those teams.

Also, the Yankees had this guy at their academy for 30 days, they didn’t give him a 3M bonus if they didn’t think he’ll stick at catcher.

  23. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:29 am

“Cash, life in general should be taken with a grain of salt…for example, I take the idea that I should work a full day today with a grain of salt…”

We’re not talking about life so take that crap someplace else. We’re talking about these so-called independent scouting sources like BA, Keith Law, BP and alike.

  24. PruBelongs July 3rd, 2009 at 9:31 am

The Yankees will win each game that Brett Gardner starts in CF this series.

  25. Hokiehill July 3rd, 2009 at 9:32 am

“We’re not talking about life so take that crap someplace else. We’re talking about these so-called independent scouting sources like BA, Keith Law, BP and alike.”

Not sure where that came from since I was basically agreeing with you but if being a jack ace is your game then go right ahead…

  26. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:33 am

    Hokiehill,

    I’ll be that for you.

  27. 86w183 July 3rd, 2009 at 9:37 am

I’d tell you, but then I’d have tokill you!

Just kiddin’. Perhaps “signed” is premature (I odn’t think it is), but he has definitely agreed to terms and will be on board before the end of the weekend.

Actually BA not only talks to scouts, but they go out and scout on their own too. Many of their ratings are first hand and others are compilations of scouts they trust and/r respect. Nothing is perfect, but I don’t know of anything better.

  28. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:45 am

If Jim Callis scouts then he does a lousy job as far as I can tell. The best guy they had in that regard left and is actually a scout for Texas I think.

Thanks for the information about Murphy.

  29. RMEL July 3rd, 2009 at 9:45 am

Im thinking we go 2-2….the Jays have some decent pitchers

  30. SJ44 July 3rd, 2009 at 9:51 am

BA is not just an media source. They also scout the players and many of the people working there are former major league scouts.

In fact, the scout that signed by nephew used to work for Baseball America after he took a break from scouting to have a family. He went back to scouting last year.

Are they perfect? NOBODY is perfect when it comes to evaluating players.

However, as an independent resource, BA is about as good as it gets.

Will Gary Sanchez stay at catcher forever? Nobody knows that and, given his body type, its an open question.

Doesn’t make it less of a signing. Its just raising a question that many, including the Yankees, have on him.

  31. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:53 am

    SJ44,

I just don’t trust BA and that’s probably due to Jim Callis.

  32. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 9:54 am

    SJ44,

What’s the problem with Sanchez’s body type? He’s a couple of inches over 6 feet at about 200 lbs.

  33. SJ44 July 3rd, 2009 at 9:59 am

At 16 years old, he could grow into being 6-4, 250 and that would take him out of being a catcher.

    6-0, 200 lbs at 16 is a big kid.

  34. CB July 3rd, 2009 at 10:07 am

The Yankees didn’t give Sanchez the largest signing bonus they’ve ever paid a teenage international because of his position.

They evidently felt that Sanchez had the single best bat in this class. And if they gave him $3m they felt that his bat is special. Not necessarily Montero special – but real good.

That’s why they signed him for that deal.

I’ve read that he could wind up a RF or LF. Who knows.

But what matters is that they think he has the one real tool that matters – the bat. And if he can hit then he’ll find a place.

The important thing with his position is this – he doesn’t only profile as a 1b/DH. If you profile like that at 16 that’s tough because there’s almost nowhere else on the diamond for you to play if that position is blocked or you don’t stick there.

But if you don’t stick at catcher that’s fine (as long as you aren’t completely unathletic). You can move to another position.

I’d trust the yankees on this. They’ve done very well identifying young internationls kids who can really hit over the past few years.

  35. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 10:13 am

I didn’t say they gave him that high bonus just because of the position. However, the position he plays has to figure into their evaluation process as far as value. Furthermore, how do you know it’s only because of his bat when I read an interview from Newman that talks about his offense and defense.

  36. 86w183 July 3rd, 2009 at 10:21 am

It would be great for the Yankees if Sanchez actually becomes a corner OF since the organization is awash in catchers with Cervelli, Montero, Romine, Higashioka and now Murphy.

  37. SJ44 July 3rd, 2009 at 10:22 am

His bat is well ahead of his glove. A generic interview doesn’t really cover what Sanchez’s strengths are.

He got that money, as Montero did a few years ago, because of his bat.

He has the best bat of any of the ILA free agents this year, and that includes Sano.

  38. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 10:23 am

Just about all those guys are projected as catchers, but never know what’s going to happen to them including Sanchez. Also, the trade value for catchers is much greater than a corner OF.

  39. Cash is King July 3rd, 2009 at 10:24 am

“He has the best bat of any of the ILA free agents this year, and that includes Sano.”

Did you hear that from a Yankee scout or is that your opinion?

  40. 86w183 July 3rd, 2009 at 10:56 am

    Cash is King —

You are quite the skeptic, aren’t you? I like it. You must have some media experience/employment/training in your background. True?
