This is sad to me. Wang did a great job yesterday and seemed to be getting back into the groove. Seems like "if he did not have bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all".

At least now I know how to get fast medical service.... be a Yankee!

I don't understand why the Yanks would rather hope for 5 good innings from Mitre as a starter, rather than start Aceves, let him go 5 innings, and hope for four good innings from Mitre as a reliever. Or start Hughes, let him go 3-4 innings and use Mitre in relief for 4 to 5 innings.

Aceves and Hughes have both shown that they can win at the Major League level. I think the team should work toward making one of them the 5th starter and stretch out his innings over a period of time.

Well, I know that's not going to happen. But, I don't understand why.

Leave Phil Franchise in the pen for now. Either bring up a Igawa/McAlister/Nova esque pitcher or trade for a Jarrod Washburn like pitcher. If longer , Aceves can move to the rotation. Just about every team has a mediocre fifth starter. Make sure your bullpen is pitching well, however. If we make the playoffs, you only need 3-4 starters anyway. And Wang's psyche must be hurting. An extreme option the Yankees can take is to shut him down for the rest of the year and rehab/mental refocus so he hopefully returns to the old CMW next year.

GB, Young Master Hughes was hitting 94-95 on a regular basis during his last starts before Wang returned….However he has to stay in the pen as it’s as good as any in baseball right now..It’s part of the club’s strength and is stable…I still thought they needed another arm out there…Funny thing is just last night SJ & I were mentioning this very same concern………..By the way GB 7,,,,Happy 4th ol’e boy…..

Thanks for the kind wishes, PAT M, and the same sentaments to you and your's.

I loved hughes last few starts and the uptick in velocity. I'm just tired of hearing/reading about Chamberlain not throwing 99-100 MPH in the 7th inning. It would be the same tired act with Hughes, because it will be a repeat performance. Gotta say one thing....it's been about 48 years since I'd seen a pitcher mentally age 4 years in 4 months. He grew up fast, didn't he?

""Hughes isn’t going to the rotation anytime soon. He can throw 45-50 pitches max according to Girardi. Not only does that make it hard on the Yankees to win those games he starts, it puts his arm at risk. We saw what happened to Joba when they transitioned him too quickly last year.""

so.. call up Albi and have a bullpen game while stretching out Hughes. and did someone say that maddon and Gammons' opinions should be took as gospel? of course Hughes will improve a bullpen. But taht is not where his future lays. Cash should grow a pair and make a sacrifice

As for Hughes, obviously he cant start at this point, not being stretched out at all, but I still don’t understand why he never pitches multiple innings when he could on so many occasions. Not only does he need the innings for next year and is providing dominant innings, but it would be easier to give him a start or several, if at any point this season we suddenly needed to.

————————————————

Your point is well taken about trying to get Hughes’ inning total up so that he can be a starter next year, but don’t forget there is the option of winter ball for Hughes…he can get 20-30 innings pitching in Arizona or Hawaiii this winter (actually its not winter ball because they play it in November but thats close enough).

The truth is…Hughes is needed in short relief to set up Mariano right now.

----------------------------------------------------

Yeah I agree the yankees kind of aborted the plan to build up his innings. If Hughes starts pitching multiple innings out of relief than they cant pitch him on back to back days like they did today. Today was the last thing Hughes had to show he could do is pitch on back to back days. With Aceves and Tomko the bullpen has enough guys that pitch multiple innings, you would be wasting Hughes if you use him as a long man.

jbp: I agree that Hughes is needed to be Mo's setup man right now, but I just think he could still be used more liberally. In fact, sometimes I would prefer to see him brought in in earlier high leverage situations instead of someone like Coke (even though he has been very good lately) or Bruney, and just stay in till it's Mo time. In most cases he still wouldnt even have to go through a lineup more than 1x if the Yankees used him that way. I think he'd still be very effective, so it would help the Yankees now and next year. Pitching in winter ball is good and something Hughes should probably do anyway, but those innings don't compare in importance to major league innings.
