Ok think about this. Yankees don't resign Matsui....He signs with Red Sox or Orioles....Now think about our pitchers lefty and righties....facing him with runners on. IT'S A NO BRAINER....SIGN MATSUIT. He's got a few more good hitting years as DH.

"Did I read earlier that you think Aceves is a better pitcher than Brad Penny? Really? Resume? Please advise.."

dennis,

I'm not sure how relevant Brad Pennys resume is anymore after all of those injuries. He's not even remotely the pitcher he was with the dodgers. So I don't think you can generalize from his past body of work much. To assess him you have to look at what he is now and what Aceves is now.

I haven't been that impressed with Penny. He's been ok. Better recently. Fine for a typical fifth starter. He just doesn't throw many innings. Again, this was a guy that the public was told would be the Red Sox AJ Burnett this year.

And right now, I think Aceves is a better pitcher. I do. Not better than Brad Penny all star from a few years ago. But Brad Penny 2009 - yes, I do.

Aceves throws 4 pitches with tremendous command. He knows how to pitch. I think Penny is still trying to figure out how to pitch in this next phase of his career.

Penny's starting and Aceves is in the pen. But Aceves has thrown 36 innings which for a reliever isn't that small a sample.

Across the board all of Aceves indices of performance are much better than Penny's - not a little better - much better. ERA, FIP, K/9, BB/9, etc. Aceves is striking out more hitters than Penny. And i can guarantee you it's not because Aceves is "emptying the tank" out of the pen. Aceves has a WHIP of 1.0. Penny 1.5. Penny's numbers aren't remotely close to as good as Aceves's. It's not even close. And IMO that is not being drive by Aceves being in the pen.

By the way, it's a huge insult to Mike Mussina that Wakefield somehow made the ASG. Ridiculous.

dennis-I would say that at this point in their respecctive careers you could make a case that Ace is better than Penny, although from what I understand Penny has done quite well recently.

What team is that?

I guess it would have been less confusing if I had mentioned Tampa, huh?

I like to see people reading between the lines. Just to see if they're as smart as I am.

Rebecca- small sample size? I would say pretty tiny sample size- The guy has been in the majors for 3 total months and thrown 60 innings, also was in the minors to start this year- i like him too, but it just goes to show you how little Yankee fans think of flexibility that Mendoza gave us year after year and appreciate his contributions-
