15 day DL - you still count towards the 40 man roster
60 day DL - you do not count towards the 40 man roster

A player needs to be in the major leagues when they are placed on the 60 day DL (i.e. we can't put Kennedy or Garcia on the 60 day DL).

40 man roster move will almost definately be Nady to the 60-day DL. To call up a starter for Thursday. My guess is Mitre given he has major league experience. With Ace ready as the long man.

Nady will be a high risk free agent and probably still rehabbing from TJ surgery well into 2010.
Cashman is best served to cut ties with him now to free up roster space.
It will be interesting to see what teams put feelers out there with intentions of slashing payroll.
MLB is very concerned about dwindling attendance. School is out and figures are not up.

does a 15 day dl stint count as a roster spot?

60 day?

i thought if you are on the dl it does not count as a roster spot?

send alby down wich puts the pen back too the traditional 7 pitchers too go along with 5 starters(12) total & bring up a pitcher.

i am sure i am missing something but don't know what.

long-time lurker, first-time caller

while the "keep hughes in the pen" consensus around here has certainly made very reasonable points, i get him back to the rotation asap. if they do still believe he is ultimately a starter (i hope so), then i take advantage of the confidence built recently in the pen and see if it translates to the rotation. And "it's only 3 starts" is very optimistic; not only do i think they will be very cautious with Wang after the inital rehab missteps, whether it's Joba's innings limit (or ineffectiveness) or someone else going down, i believe they will need more than 3 starts from someone else before the end of the season.

For this year and the future, i would rather have it be Hughes than a journeyman. Start the process now...

Pat
Even if possible, I would think that a DFA would mean no chance at draft picks if he signs elsewhere.

The NYY need to start preparing Phil Hughes to take CMW's spot for the remainder of the year. Shoulder problems, especially considering CMW's history, are nothing to take lightly. CMW probably won't be ready until early August, assuming he recovers OK. By then he'll be back at square one and the NYY can't afford to build him back up so late in the year. They can't afford to give away games or tax the pen as the stretch drive begins. It will probably take 3-4 weeks to build PH up so if they start now he'll be ready for the Aug-Sept stretch run. PH has been great in the pen. He helped when the team had a need. Now the team needs help in the rotation, that's his job. As far as the pen, Bruney needs to step up like Hughes did. Maybe they can explore other options at SWB or the trade market. Plus Coke is beginning to look like the Coke of last year. It all starts with starting pitching and the NYY need to put their best 5 out there, that includes Phil Hughes.

"Maybe it’s just dumb luck or an indication that the depth of the rotation is the strength of this team."

Whoa... if that were true, then Loopyca might have to give credit to Cashman or the Yankee starters ;)

Hey Loopy... you've crapped on the new Yankee Stadium and Cashman like an overfed goose, but where's the truthing for Minaya? How's that decision to clean out the farm system to get Santana looking now? And how about that new CitiField, where your not-really-a-HR-hitter David Wright has lost his stroke? And what about this Reyes situation? Is he going "Pavano" on the Metsies?

The 40 man roster move for Mitre may be a bigger concern than the start. Since Nady is DLed and a free agent next year, could he be removed or does a DL prevent a DFA?
