What if this was a play off game and the ump,threw out the rule book? He has to be disciplined for a obvious faulty game changing call.

Seriously, he actually said to Jeter that he didn’t have to be tagged to be out? No wonder Jeter was ticked.

That’s not like the ball beat Jeter and Foster just didn’t see the missed tag because his view was blocked, which happens sometimes in a bang-bang play and is probably why guys sometimes get called out when they’re not actually tagged.

That’s more like saying “you can be safe but I can still call you out, and that’s what just happened” or telling a pitcher “just because the batter swung & missed doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a strike”.

Foster was the same guy who called Tex out at home yesterday, when he was tagged with Chavez’s glove, while Chavez held the ball in his bare hand.

Foster has been umpiring since 1996, so that makes this clear, BLATANT misunderstanding of the rules a little puzzling. Regardless, MLB HAS to do something about this.

I’m a librarian. If I tell a customer completely wrong information regarding a program, or if I tell them we don’t have an item they’re looking for without even bothering to look for it, I’m going to lose my job. This is just a little different, but SOME kind of action must be taken. Period.

To answer your question more precisely, I don’t think the ump disregarded the rule. I suspect he didn’t see the play clearly, and fell back on a rule of thumb, which is that when the throw beats the runner, BARRING EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY, the runner is out. In this case, I think the ump just didn’t see that the the fielder had missed the tag.

When Jeter complained, the ump just said the throw beat you, you were out. He probably should have thrown in all the boilerplate exceptions, but he didn’t.

PatricI agree it wasn’t the only wrong call, and the others were worse IMO. The blown call at 2nd led to the 3 run HR, and that was just a blown call. And the other call at 2nd didn’t make the “vicinity play” exception IMO. Those two calls really irked me.

But the call on Jeter just didn’t get me all that hot and bothered.

How can you accept an umpire blatantly disregarding a fundamental rule of the game? Pretty damning if you ask me.

Wave Your Hat, we lost the game by 1 run. If Jeter was safe on third, he would’ve scored. Everything in baseball has drastic consequences on the rest of the game.
