He was 0 for 3 with a walk as the DH for Trenton tonight.
Molina is 1 for 10 with two walks and three strikeouts in four rehab games. He is scheduled to play for Trenton on Tuesday night.
We can’t activate Molina until he starts to hit
Why do we need a .100 hitting backup catcher? No need to rush him. Let him get hot then we can call him up.
The Cincinatti shortstop, Paul Jannish pitched an inning against the Phillies today in an 16-1 game and gave up 6 runs in a inning.
I agree, Mike – at least his base level production…
Rishi, Thanks for the recap!
Grey 44-He’s not Swisher.
The A’s acquired all those veteran bats one year too early.
Next year, that A’s pitching staff is going to be just sick.
Man, so I make a post saying that ’09 Aceves is outpitching ’96 Mariano and none of you want to engage me in my blasphemy?
Religious crowd tonight.
“We can’t activate Molina until he starts to hit”
Then I guess he’ll be on the DL indefinitely. LOL!

I never accuse a fellow Nets fan of blasphemy. There are too few of us!
Andy – one good start, one bad.
Good against Cleveland
Bad against Texas
Good against Tampa
Bad against the Mets
Good against Florida
Bad against Atlanta
Good against Seattle
Bad today
etc.
He better get it going and he better get it going soon. I don’t care about his 8 wins, I care about his alternating good and bad outings.
NickSF.
Good reference with Abbie however this book IMO is nothing like that. Just a good story about about good people.
Tisha.
Hope all is well.

I believe Eric Hinske’s nick name should be E-Roc or E-Rock.
What do you people think?
Aceves > 96 MO
Teixeria > Donnie Dodger
That is all.
Hey, anyone see this AP report?
“The Yankees ran out of $5 senior citizen tickets and let about 170 seniors sit in $375 seats on the field level for the $5 price.”
Good for them — hope they do more things like that with the empty seats.
vb03: No one’s even asking me to back it up! Man.
If I actually followed basketball I’d be a Nets fan.
For Aceves, it’s a real shame. If he had come up at any other time, he’d be a rookie phenom and a sensation with Yankee fans, but Joba and Hughes overshadow him because we’ve heard so much about them.
E-Rod: Who is Donnie Dodger?
“I believe Eric Hinske’s nick name should be E-Roc or E-Rock.”
I can get behind E-Rock
So basically Swisher is still the best pitcher in the majors.
I know Jose doesn’t hit. But you can’t have an automatic out in the lineup. going 1 for 10 is awful.
How long has he been playing games? they have 20 days to activate him. It makes it so much easier to not rush him back with Cisco playing so well.
Who would have thought when Jorge and Jose went down, we wouldn’t be waiting on pins and needles for Jose to come back.
I kind of like E-Rock.
Hey Den – better all the time. Thanks. Time is the healer of all wounds.
We’re planning our trip up the coast, hopefully to happen within the next two weeks. Can’t wait. I’m hoping we don’t get oppressively warm/sticky weather.
Guys go read Jane Heller’s blog. She defaced some pictures of the Umpires. Really gave me a good laugh
It not easy to challenge a WFAN-certified baseball analyst.
NYY626-Her blog is hysterical.
When is Selig going to stop letting fans ruin the All-Star game?
How does streaky Teixeria who is hitting .213 since June (and was hitting .190 for over a month stretch before A-Rod arrived) get voted in over Morneau?
How does Pedroia and his 2 HRs and 30 RBIs get in over Kinsler?
How does Josh Hamilton miss 2 months and get voted in!!!
Why does Wakefield and his 4.30 ERA (which ranks 28th in the AL) go to the ASG?
Why isin’t JA Burnett in the ASG instead? it is a joke….

Ace has n ERA a tick over 2 and a .95 WHIP. Doesn’t get a whole lot better than that.
I really like Molina, but the Yankees need him hitting before he’s back.
Ace better than the 96 MO?
Blasphemy! Back it up.
It is such a huge insult to Mike Mussina and obvious bias to the Sox that Wakefield is in the ASG.
I like not having our SP in the All Star game. Doesn’t mess up the schedule.
“It not easy to challenge a WFAN-certified baseball analyst.”
Oh come on. Like what I said actually made any sort of sense.
Ok, Rebecca, I’ll play along.
No way! Aceves having a better season than Mo ’96?? Can’t be! Not a chance you can back that up. Crazy talk!
Trisha.

Hope you have a great time. Time heals everything.
Glad you are doing Ok.

Jennifer, I for one will be very happy to have Molina back. I don’t care if he goes 1 for 100. 1 for 10 is nothing………….
Imagine if Pedroia got called out by the ump like Jeter did today?
ESPN would not let it go away
kinsler is slumping too.
Cervelli has fit in perfectly, is loved by his teammates (especially AJ and Phil), and has great eyes…
Molina can wait his turn. Let him start to hit more than .100 before coming up here and dethroning the clubhouse favorite Cervelli…..
No way Aceves is sniffing Mo’s 1996 season – not even close.

Betsy-Well, apparently the numbers support it.
Nets fans stick together.
Ace 2009: 2.02 ERA, .92 WHIP
Mo 1996: 2.09 ERA, .994 WHIP
I’m a Yankee fan, but I have to admit it is pretty ridiculous that Tex is an All-Star. His numbers look good on the surface, but if you watched him everyday, he basically accumulated that in a 3-week span. He has done nothing for the last month or the first 6 weeks of the season.
Morneau was robbed.
Wait, I know what I saw in 1996. I like Aceves – he’s been great. He is not, nor will he ever be anything like Mo – 1996 version or not. As Tom Kelly said, Mo belonged in a higher league.
RalphieD (OPPC)
Lets have a open vote we will see who has more of a response. I see fans liking E-Rock. I can hear Michael Kay saying “Oh whatta play by E-Rock to rob a HR” lol
Yank 102, I sort of agree. Tex has been more mediocre than good……he was insane for a few weeks, but before that he was hideous and he’s been bad for weeks now.
“I really like Molina, but the Yankees need him hitting before he’s back.”
Molina has NEVER hit. Which is why he is the BACKUP catcher. If he could hit any he would start. I mean really even Varitek is a starter.
The numbers do support that Aceves has been better than him.
Too bad nobody will concede because Aceves doesn’t throw as hard. As usual, always about the radar gone. No love for the groundouts and pop ups….

Mo put up one of the nastiest seasons a reliever could put up in 1996. Incredibly, Aceves actually isn’t that far behind. More of a testament to Aceves than a knock on Mo.
ajax hit his 4th homerun of the year tonight
Youkilis and Morneau and possibly Branyan have better numbers than Teixeira.
Morneau deserved to be the starter.
That being said, I voted for Tex
More interestingly, Mo was 26 when he put up that nasty 1996 campaign together.
Aceves this year is also 26.
Yank102-I disagree. Far from ridiculous. Morneau deserved it, but any of the first basemen mentioned would have made fine choices.

In 2009, Aceves has an ERA of 2.02, a WHIP of .925, 6.8 h/9, an ERA+ of 216 (!!), 1.6 walks per nine, 7.7 K’s per nine and 4.86 K/BB.

You’re all forgetting how insane he really was playing. People were talking half jokingly about MVP.
Bring up Molina, DFA Ransom.
“It is such a huge insult to Mike Mussina and obvious bias to the Sox that Wakefield is in the ASG.”
I totally agree that Wakefield does not deserve to go (and Moose had better numbers at the break last year), but they did add an extra roster spot this year for Joe Maddon’s mancrush sentimental pick.

Austin Jackson’s power is starting to come around, along with his average. A bit of a slump over the last 4 days, but, he added his 4th homer tonight, going to left center in Scranton, bumping the lead up to 4-0 in the 3rd inning..
Also one of the things you look for in relievers is the prevention of RISP crossing the plate, and Ace has excelled in that as well:
Ace with RISP in 2009: .120/.226/.120/.346
Mo with RISP in 1996: .169/.299/.213/.513
Hughes looks more like the 96 MO than Ace does (though neither probably will be over the course of the season)
The drool worthy late-life FBs 96 on the black.
And that curve to Longoria and the one to Jordan Zimmerman….
vb: The thing that really gets me–they’re both the same age!
Is there anything in that post about how Aceves has thrown 40 innings so far this season and Rivera threw 107.1 in 1996? (serious question)
Rebecca-
I get what your saying about Ace, but Rivera did that in 107 inns.
Still a long ways off for Aceves to get near those #’s for the year.
Rebecca, thanks for posting, but the season isn’t over…let’s see what Aceves’ numbers look like at the end of the year. Also, numbers don’t always tell the whole story. Mo was outrageously dominant – and this has nothing to do with velocity (I don’t care that Aceves isn’t a flame thrower – the guy is a real pitcher).
When Aceves pitches 100 innings this year then you can debate the numbers.
Right now Mo’s 1996 > Aceves’ 2009 due to how many more innings Mo pitched than Aceves has so far.
Phil Mickelson’s mom just got diagnosed with breast cancer – along with his wife who was diagnosed earlier this year.
so sad

If Ace becomes half the reliever Mo has become, I’d be pretty stoked about that.
The early returns on this guy have been great.
Condo, that curve to Zimmerman…….wow. I haven’t forgotten that one – an unbelievable pitch
Nick: “Is there anything in that post about how Aceves has thrown 40 innings so far this season and Rivera threw 107.1 in 1996? (serious question)”
Yes: “Now, there is of course the caveat that Ace’s 40 innings pitched do not equal Mo’s 100+ innings pitched, but at the halfway point of the season the 40 IP is not a horrendously small sample size.”
One also has to consider that Ace wasn’t even called up until 5 May, so he’s basically pitched those 40 over two months.
Buddy: I realize the sample size doesn’t compare, at least not yet, but 40 IP isn’t a ridicoulously, out of the question small sample size, either.
Betsy: “Rebecca, thanks for posting, but the season isn’t over…let’s see what Aceves’ numbers look like at the end of the year. Also, numbers don’t always tell the whole story. Indeed, we’ll see what happens at the end of the season, but thus far Ace has been remarkably consistent–not giving us any sign as to whether or not he will wear down. Girardi will have to be careful not to over use him; the rest of the pen pitching well gives him that chance.
Yes, Mo was outrageously dominant, but Aceves isn’t half bad himself. I dunno about you, but small sample size or not, 4 IP and just one hit against a pretty good offensive team (this year, anyway) is pretty dominant, too.
The most impressive thing about Mo’s 1996 is that in all the important splits, batters managed less than a .200 BA against him, including a ridiculous .132 with RISP and 2 outs.
He held righties to a .157 average. .157!
“When Aceves pitches 100 innings this year then you can debate the numbers.
Right now Mo’s 1996 > Aceves’ 2009 due to how many more innings Mo pitched than Aceves has so far.”
Right. But Aceves is on pace to throw 80. Maybe more than that. He got a late start.
I forgot Mo’s 14.1 innings in October. One earned run over that stretch.
I hope Aceves gets there too.

Blasphemey???????
Rebecca – respect – Buuuuut how old were you in 1996???
I’m glad people are hopping off the Joba bandwagon sort of (and it ridiculous that a guy who has never done anything had such a following, it’s not his fault however) and getting back on Hughes’ bandwagon.
Mo had a 22 K/BB ratio in September and October of that year with a .824 WHIP. Perhaps the godliest short stretch of relief pitching I’ve come across.
I don’t think anyone here is knocking Aceves.
I have Acevitis, personally speaking.
Let Cervelli atleast make the trip to Anaheim
The guy is from Venezuela and has probably never seen the West Coast of America. It would be a nice experience for him

Hah, I was 10 too. That year I played sandlot baseball as the shortstop of our homemade NY Yankees squad, even had the pinstriped jerseys. Good times.
Jose Molina can’t hit. If he could, he would be a starting catcher like his 2 brothers. When he is ready he will be called up and pretty eyes Cervelli will be sent down.

The All Star game is a joke. Should have never tied the results to the World Series.
Don’t feel bad Rebecca. My parents used to make me go to bed early too.
I was 14 during the 2005 ALDS. When Game 2 went into extra innings my dad made me go to bed. I went into my room and turned the TV on mute. My dad caught me when he went to use the bathroom. He looked at me and said “Well, how am I supposed to get mad at this???” and walked out of the room

Yep, 26. I think that at the end of the season, even if Ace keeps the pace, people will still think it’s an absurd comparison because Ace isn’t Mo.
But I’m actually kinda cool with that.
Because then Ace becomes like our secret weapon.
9:00 bedtime??? That’s the second story of parental deprivation you’ve told.
Pablo ‘Kung Fu Panda’ Sandoval just hit a GS in support of Matt Cain to give the San Francisco Baseball Giants a 5-0 lead over the Marlins. I hope he wins the AS extra-player vote.

Heh, my parents weren’t sports fans.
In 1998 and 1999 I listened to it on the radio, which was right next to my bed, so when my parents came up to check on me I could flip it off.
In 2000 my mom came up and basically told me to get out of bed and watch the ninth inning =P
In 01 and 03 I was listening in bed because I had to get up at 5.45 for school, and it was laaaate.
Speaking of Cashman…
Seeing the current misery of all of the Mets fans I know, I feel very lucky that the Yankees have the farm system we have. If you think about it half the debates we have on here are which players should be sent up/down and given chances on the big league levels. When the Mets starters got hurt, they have replacement players who look awful. Minaya made a mess of their farm system. We are pretty lucky if you think about it
Molina is out of shape and can’t hit
Why do we want him on the roster over a young, hungry kid who has shown he can hit a little and is loved in the clubhouse by the pitchers?

Please do not offend people with your handle by bringing up sick crimes. Try and act like a normal person. One strike and you’re out.
What is wrong with some people?
The question for me is why the Yanks missed Aceves’ potential to start the season?

Must improve the power, cut down the Ks.

Rebecca,
In 1998, I was a freshman in college away at school. I was sitting in my dorm room watching the game talking online to my then boyfriend (we went to different schools and he couldn’t have cared less about sports). After the last out of Game 4, I went screaming outside in the courtyard for about an hour to celebrate. When I finally returned to my room, my boyfriend was really mad at me. Apparently, I never said goodbye or anything like that and he had no idea where I went. Oops. LOL

“Please do not offend people with your handle by bringing up sick crimes. One strike and you’re out.”
thanks for the warning. Luckily I didn’t change my handle to “Marty Foster – umpire extraordinaire”
Pete-
Thank you for getting rid of that guy. I thought his handle was really gross
“The question for me is why the Yanks missed Aceves’ potential to start the season?”
He had a horrible Spring Training.
Which once again proves why ST results mean utterly nothing.

I was a freshman in 2004. My roomate was a Sox fan. We didn’t really talk to each other after October. I don’t think it’s all that hard to understand why.
I love when I try to listen to spring training games on the radio. When the starters leave by the 5th inning, I usually can’t tell which team is the Yankees anymore
I’ve been on the Aceves bandwagon ever since Jorge from Mexico started talking him up on LoHud. But seeing it takes it to a whole other level. Guys like that are really easy to root for.
Rebecca-
That is hilarious. You probably could have gotten a room change on grounds of mental cruelty
The Panda should certainly be an All-Star.
.345/.357/.490/.847 are legit numbers.
Sure, he could walk more, but you get away with a lot when you’ve got a .345 BA.
so all of a sudden we have a stud bullpen – i love it when a plan comes together.

“I realize there going to play EL Nino at SS down in Scranton, but when are they going to start playing him in the outfield?”
It might have something to do with the field being in such bad shape and not wanting to risk an injury. Maybe the next time SWB is on the road?

I would imagine that the Yanks will do the normal thing and give him a week or so of instructions on tracking flies, judging on how they slice away from them, fielding the ground singles and such. Much of that will be done during batting practice, some before and some after games. They’ll probably give him some game time by mid month.

The asking price on Jarrod Washburn after tonight. A complete game 1 hit shutout against Baltimore. 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. One base runner. It was a 4th inning, 2 out, 2 strike single to Markakis.
OK, OK, who’s trying to suggest taking my man Andy out of the rotation?
No way, Andy Pettitte is one of our Yankee legends, he stays.
I think the rotation should be, until Wang gets back, the following;
Sabathia
Burnett
Pettitte
Hughes
Aceves
Put Joba back in the pen until he learns his lesson. Young whipper snapper!
One thing for sure, the Yankees of the World Series version of not being dead until you get the last man out is back!!!!!!!!
Francisco Cervelli did not have to look very far Wednesday to see just how quickly things change in a major league clubhouse.
Just a few feet away in an adjacent locker, Yankees’ utility infielder Ramiro Pena was packing his bags for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
“You never like to see that,” Cervelli said. “I’ve spent more time with him (Pena) than my family the last six months. Things happen in this game, but the only thing we can control is how well we play. He’s going to come back. He’s a good, steady player.”
I”d hate to see Cervelli go down to AAA. but I like Molina though. I think hes great behind the plate.
