Tonight: LHP CC Sabathia (7-5, 3.85) vs. RHP Scott Baker (6-6, 4.99), 8:10, MY9
Wednesday: RHP A.J. Burnett (7-4, 3.83) vs. LHP Glen Perkins (4-4, 4.38), 8:10, YES
Thursday: TBA vs. RHP Anthony Swarzak (2-2, 3.90), 1:10, YES
I hope TBA pitches a perfect game.
I say that Thursday’s starter should be Aceves. With CC & AJ pitching the opening 2 games, most likely they will give the bullpen a rest for a couple of days, thus making Aceves’ start a 5 inning requirement. He should be able to pitch into the 4th or 5th inning and then they can decide after that start whether or not to put him into the rotation for good. They will see during the AS break, if Wang’s injury is short term or long term, therefore they could insert Aceves into the rotation for a start or two after the AS break.
Let me guess…..at least three people will comment on how many games we will take based on those pitching matchups and be convinced it’s absolutely going to happen.
Joe should look to get Creative in the third game. Maybe He can start Coke, Alby, or D-Rob to go two innings. Bring The Mexican Gangster in the third to pitch 4 or 5 innings. And if they are winning, have P. Hugh and Mo Close it out.
Just a Thought out of the box.
This way, no one has to be dfa’ed of the 40 man roster
I think they will wait to see how the first 2 games go. The Yankees should win at least 1 of those games and both guys should pitch 7.
If Ace is not needed in the first 2, then he should get the start. Ace seems to be more flexable than Phil as they are not as protective as to how he’s used.
It sounds like Phil is staying in the pen until Bruney is straightened out. Phil is the long term plan for the next starter but I guess he would need to be streched out. Look for Phil to start pitching 2-3 innings at a time.
Chad Jennings says that Edwar Ramirez looks great now that his shoulder is rested so maybe down the road he could be an accountable RP.. Most of the pitchers who might have been called up pitched last night so this looks like an in-house pitcher for Thursdays game.
Peter,
TSN is reporting that the Blue Jays are going to listen to offers for Halladay some the deadline. Ricciardi said they aren’t actively looking to trade him, but are more serious about listening to potential offers than ever before.
This raises the obvious question about possible Yankees involvement.
Obviously the Jays will want a king’s ransom for arguably the best pitcher in the game. My guess is the Yankees if interested will be held over a barrel for every last piece of quality young talent they have. Would the Jays be crazy enough to even consider trading him in the division? This isn’t Roger Clemens from the late 1990s. This is Halladay, the most dominant pitcher in the AL. I don’t see it personally, but if the Jays would listen to the Yankees, provided they were even interested, what do you think the Bombers could offer to get this guy here?
Thanks.
If I were Riccardi, to trade Roy Halladay to the Yankees; I would START with Hughes or Chaimberlain AND Montero. The Yankees would still have to come with more.
Seriously, this guys is consistently one of the best pitchers in the game year in year out. Moreover, he’s performed as well as he has in the toughest single division in baseball while being on the FOURTH best team in the division.
PLUS, there needs to be a premium for trading him in the divsion, especially considering that there will be more than a few other teams willing to trade for Halladay’s services.
Do I think the Yankees should give up what Riccardi will want? No. Halladay would be worth it if they could trade for him on an even ground with others. But there HAS to be an in-division premium for his services. That premium will mean the Yankees would have to give up too much for the trade to be worthwhile.
It’s this kind of “in division” premium that prevents rivals from making big time trades with each other in the first place.
Good news- thanks to a settlement with the ACLU, I can now pee during God Bless America without getting beaten up or chained into my seats like cattle.
With CC, AJ, Joba & Hughes, the NYY already have 4 rotation spots nailed down with quality starters for years to come (barring injuries, etc). SP isn’t a particular weakness, so giving up a truckload of young prospects to add another (albeit terrific) SP doesn’t seem to make much sense. A better place to improve the team would be in the OF, with Nady, Damon, and Matsui all in their final years and only Ajax preparing to come on board.
Looking at those matchups, I haven’t really heard much about the Twins pitchers… which means they’ll dominate the Yankees’ lineup.
ESPN schedule has Mitre pitching on Thursday…
Mitre is pitching tonight in Scranton. Where did you get this info, Ronald?
According to this site, http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/schedules, Thursday’s starter is still “Undecided”.
There has been no announcement made by the Yankees on any of their websites.
Depends on the deal but a rotation that starts out “Roy Halladay, CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, Joba Chamberlain” could have my 65 year old mother as the 5th starter and be dominant. That could be the best rotation EVER. The twosome of Doc and CC would be up there with Koufax and Drysdale. Seaver and Ryan. Peanut butter and Jelly.
Again, depends on the deal but if I’m Cashman, I’m listening. Very hard.
Let’s talk about Thursday starter, but more importantly where the team goes from here as we approach the trade deadline.
Since it appears Wang might be out for a significant amount of time, we need a short-term solution for Thursday and a long-term solution for the season moving forward.
In the short-term, the start could go to Mitre or Ace with Hughes serving as Mitre’s backup if (or when) he struggles or Ace’s when he reaches 60 or so pitches.
But whether it’s Mitre or Ace on Thursday, the start should serve as the beginning of Hughes’ stretch out, because in the long-term the rotation spot should be his. He is going to be a starter in the future, and right now he very well may be the 3rd best starter on our team. Ace should stay in the bullpen where he has served as an extraordinary long-man.
Obviously, Hughes leaving the 8th inning role weakens our bullpen, but this is where I believe the Yankees should be exploring trade options. A quality bullpen arm is easier to come by then a starter as good as Hughes. Remember his last 3 starts before Wang returned were good and improving. Plus he’s undoubtedly built up confidence facing major league hitters out of the pen. (He’s also some maturity that I wish another young starter of ours would show.)
One potential trade option I would pursue to replace Hughes (and get Tomko the heck off the roster) is with the Braves. Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano will both be free agents at the end of the year, and if the Braves fall out by the All Star Break, they might be willing to deal them for some bullpen arms and a power bats under contract. Would they take Edwar Ramirez, Albaladejo, Miranda, Shelly Duncan, and Swisher OR Hinske? Or would this deal cost of Melancon?
Soriano and Gonzalez replace Tomko (don’t care where he goes) and Hughes (starter) in the pen.
Leaves us with:
Bullpen
Rivera
Gonzalez
Soriano
Bruney
Coke
Aceves
Robertson
Rotation
CC
AJ
Joba
Andy
Hughes
This is a better pen and rotation than:
Bullpen:
Rivera
Hughes
Bruney
Coke
Aceves
Robertson
Tomko
Rotation:
CC
AJ
Joba
Andy
Washburn/Bedard/Nova/Mitre/ or anyone else we can get without giving up top prospects (meaning Halladay is out)
Did anybody else notice that CC’s stats are almost the same as AJ’s. Here’s hoping that CC gets it going (again) tonight.
Montero looks to be a monster…hate to give him up…but a chance to get Doc???? Let’s see what Cashman does, it will be fun. My guess is the price it would take to sign Doc will drive the trade value down…
I know Bedard has shown to be a bit injury prone, but I’d take him in a heartbeat.
If Seattle is looking to move him we should be all over that discussion.
