Two stats of note
Two interesting statistics:
Via Mark Feinsand: The Yankees have not trailed on the road since Joe Girardi got ejected back on June 24.
Via Raphy, one of our readers: A.J. Burnett is the first pitcher since at least 1954 to have thrown three or more wild pitches in three games in the same season.
A.J.’s last 8 starts: 6-2, 2.00. His first half of the season (8-4, 3.77) was pretty solid. Given what he did in the second half of last season, 17 or 18 wins is certainly a reasonable expectation.
Back in a bit with some audio.

AJ Burnett: Spectacular or spectacularly wild
Neither K-Rod, nor Bruney have been the same since their altercation.
Very solid, actually Pete…..semantics, though. AJ’s been terrific.
Aww, Frankie:
http://kimberlyjones.mlblogs.c.....rdest.html
Yet there was sadness with Cervelli, who said he didn’t think we could possibly understand how much the past two months have meant to him. “The most important time in my life,” he said. “You don’t know how much I enjoyed every day here.”
Over the past two months, his parents visited New York for the first time and loved it. They were in town during the Subway Series at Citifield. Cervelli introduced them to everyone he could on the team bus.
He marveled at catching Mariano. “You could catch him in your sleep,” he said, closing his eyes and shaking his head. “The best.”
**I love this kid – what a couple of months for him. Imagine his pride in getting to introduce his parents to his teammates? This stint meant so much to him – what a genuinely good kid. I’m glad Molina is back, but I’m going to miss Frankie……and so will the Yankees.
m: IMO, AJ was better tonight (more effective, economical) than Joba has been even in his most of his ok starts. It was still a bit of a grind for AJ at times, and the wildness was a fun wrinkle, but the game didn’t take on the plodding quality that Joba’s starts have been taking on.
This was my impression.
We’re certainly happy about AJ turning it on over the last month. Even tonight he battled and came up big when the game was on the line.
For a while I thought he might turn out to be a punk. The bad kind.
“A.J. Burnett is the first pitcher since at least 1954 to have thrown three or more wild pitches in three games in the same season.”
can’t blame one single catcher.
First game – Molina. Second game – Cervelli and Cash. Today – Posada.
AJ is an equal opportunity wild pitcher.
cervelli will be back in 7 weeks…
I like RAB’s take on tonight: Yanks edge Mauer, 4-3.
>Neither K-Rod, nor Bruney have been the same since their altercation.
Bruney rode the gurney. What’s K-Rod’s excuse?
“YankeesWFAN: “There’s a chance that he’ll stay there the rest of the year.” Joe Girardi on Phil Hughes in the bullpen.”
They’ve won 12 of thier last 14 w/ him in there. His ERA is in the 1′s…..he also better stop talking like that in postgames or else he’s never leaving that role. “It doesn’t feel like the 8th inning” SHUT UP Yusssssse
m, Staples Center is a cool crowd….Anahiem is very laid back, as there’s still a majority of Yankee fans in attendance….Maybe not as 70-30 like it was about 10 years ago…..Dosger Stadium has an edge to it when you’re sitting midway up….In Anahiem everyone still says thank you and you’re welecome…..When ever I go back to NYC and I say that, I’m told that I’m not from around here ??? And I grew up in NY ( Eastchester )
repost from an insomiac.
Is this the same MJ “Staples Crowd”?
The Halladay chat is amazing.

Amy told me that the photo went out today 2 day fed ex from moose butt. You will have it on Friday.

K-Rod plays for the Mets. Ain’t that excuse enough?
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07.....f=baseball
I had no idea that Aceves was so creative and artistic
Nick,
Thanks. I’ll catch the archive later. The main thing is we win the game. Not if someone got thrown out at second, or threw 3 wild pitches, or walked enough to field a basketball team, or give one up to the one of the hottest hitters in baseball. That’s why the game-thread belly-aching is just that.
Brandon,
Did you hear a faint Panamanian accent when Yuse was talking?
Brandon, never fear – Phil really does want to be a starter.
I missed the YES post-game, but thanks to Pel, I caught the audio. Phil was his usual self – which is just fine.
Pat M: you’re going to the Friday game? I wish the Sunday game was the ESPN night game, I would possibly drive down. Don’t think I could make it down by 1:00 though.
“Brandon,
Did you hear a faint Panamanian accent when Yuse was talking? ”
Yes it did, and it needs to go away.
Different crowd dennis-costanza……Laker crowd reminds me of the old Garden crowd in the early 70′s…..Tori Hunter and Vlady are hurt, may not see much of them this weekend…..
dennis,
haha. I didn’t watch, but from the “highlights” it was a doozy. And of course, the Lakers representin’.
As for the Halladay talk, it’s just that. But it’s fun. He’s the crown jewel, and any fanbase should be drooling.
Nice Article Betsy!!
m: yes, winning trumps all else. But multiple wild pitches have been known to hamper winning in the past however… best not to do that so often.
Have to agree with Nick in SF. I watched Joba pitch the other day and kept thinking, what is this guy doing? Where’s the energy? He never had a rhythm, and he looked like it was a chore for him to get back on the rubber. The guy is 23, not 43.
Then I watched CC pitch, yesterday, and the difference was stark. CC’s attitude was like, “Get me the ball. I need to get this guy out, now!” Similar today with AJ, though AJ obviously wasn’t as sharp.
I don’t know if Joba is just trying too hard to pace himself, pitching as a started vs a reliever, or to keep his emotions in check, but he hasn’t been pitching with the attitude that his ability justifies. He’s been pitching like he just doesn’t believe.
Isn’t it, Irish? I can’t believe Aceves is still just 26…
I thought the coaches told Joba to go as hard as he can for as long as he can? He need not worry about giving length. Give quality, and the length will take care of itself.
I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again: it was both rude and unnecessary for Phil Jackson to smoke that cigar at the MJ memorial.
Hmm, I guess I was agreeing with m’s comment, quoted by Nick.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07.....ref=sports
A. J. Burnett sees something of himself in the movie “300,” an action thriller set in ancient Greece. He has a tattoo of a main character — helmet and shield and sneer — and has watched the film before his starts. If baseball is a battle, Burnett wants to be the brave warrior.
**If he wants to be the brave warrior, he’s not doing a bad job, lol.
Also, there is this:
Though it is not impossible, the Yankees’ chances of trading for Roy Halladay are remote for several reasons. The Yankees do not believe Toronto would trade Halladay within the American League East, and they are leery of losing their best prospects and adding payroll in the same deal. …
Mel.
I was just kidding as you know.
Pat M.
I know it is a different crowd.

It may be what the coaches told Joba, but it doesn’t look like that’s what he’s been doing. Maybe he’s just afraid of hurting himself again.
Aceves wears No. 91, and while Hughes insists it is because his fastball peaks at 91 miles an hour, Aceves does it to honor Dennis Rodman, the former power forward known for outrageous antics and championships.
=========================================
Great article. That Hughes is one funny guy. And he was in the Toronto system?
Betsy: That Aceves article should be a must read!
Stanzy: no, you were agreeing with me, I was just addressing my remarks to m in particular in response to a comment in the last thread.
I am agreed with so infrequently, I don’t want to lose out.
i always like the “artistic” athletes who like to use their mind.
BTW, what’s with the jokes about Hefty bags?
Is that in reference to their outfield “walls”?
NickSF.
I agree. I still do not want to punch anyone in the face.

Rebecca, it’s terrific – Kepner is a very good writer.

Toronto has an organizational amazing eye for spotting pitching talent. they have a huge issue in terms of learning how to handle pitchers, but if Toronto’s starting rotation this year stayed healthy all year, they could easily have the one of the best rotations in the majors. But they can’t stay healthy.

That sounds great, Dennis. I’m looking forward to get it up on the wall. I’d like to express my thanks to you and Ms Amy for this.
I’ll even have to stop making fun of Moose Butt, Maine. We’ll have to hook up at the Chart House when ya’ll get back to Savannah, this fall.
Again, thank you and Amy for the beautiful photo shot.
That was a great story on Aceves by Kepner. Thanks Betsy.
I’m looking forward to this game tomorrow. I’ve been an Aceves fan from about his first inning last season and was disappointed he didn’t make the team out of Tampa.
I thought it was so refreshing to see him waltz through 4 innings on Sunday after Joba flopped.
I’s love to see a strong “I belong” performance from him tomorrow. He’s sort of unofficially on short rest and I know they have him on a pitch count but I’m sure he’ll be prepared and will be focused.
And if he ends up putting together some solid starts, I really hope they consider him for the rotation for the rest of the season.
Ah, thanks for straightening me out, Nick. By the way, been enjoying your haikus.
I’m very glad that Ace is starting in minny. I initially feared that it would be in Anaheim. If I’m not mistaken, didn’t he have his worst outing there last season? Had lots of familia in the crowd?
But anyway, whatever we can get out of Alfredo will be good. (remember, Joe, it’s Little League World Series rules)
He actually had his best outing of the year in Anahiem – 7 IP, 1 ER
It was Rasner who got lit up in Oakland in front of his family (3 IP, 6 ER)
m: You’re confusing Ace with IPK.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....8;c_id=nyy
Actually it was Ian Kennedy that got lit up in Anaheim, and when he made those big bad comments of doom
haiku is lonely
five, seven, five, then nothing
thanks for noticing
Yikes! Sorry, Alfredo.
I miss IPK’s postgame interviews.
And by the way, I tried to give Aceves his un-official LoHud nickname last season but no-one bit.
It was “El Gusano” or “The Worm” in Spanish in honor of his fondness for Rodman. You can call him “Gus” for short which in Spanish sounds like “Goose”
Eh. I like RAB’s “The Mexicutioner”.
Not a fan of Mexican Gangsta, though, for obvious reasons.

Actually, he was quite good when he pitched against the Angels in anaheim, last year. Got the win….7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts.
Brandon,
Don’t worry—- Joba seems to have them down pat. Carrying the Ian Kennedy torch while he is recovering from surgery— very nice of him.
Alfredo’s worst start last season was in Fenway. I think it was 4 runs in 4 innings. A bomb did him in. It might have been Bay or maybe Youk.
CEREVELLI one class act.
Yuck, don’t like RAB’s one. And someone said it’s taken already?
Ace, Fredo, Alf (j/k)
BTW, we only need to win 77 games to clinch a playoff spot! Was the high water mark for last season really 16 games? Sounds impossible.
Mike,
No one did it w/ the swagger that Kennedy had, no one.
The Husband of Mrs. Aceves isn’t much of a nickname, is it?
Joba was just trying to be like Jeter, politically correct and not trying to be upset
Ian Kennedy really did believe he pitched well
You know, I bet IPK’s scare will be a blessing in disguise. He probably appreciated his position in the Yankees organization before, but I don’t think he’ll take anything for granted anymore. You don’t really appreciate things until you almost lose them.
Highest NYY got last year was 17 games over on 28 September.
TylerKepner How does Burnett settle himself when his stuff is off? Humor. “If y’all could read my mind out there, y’all would crack up,” he said.
about 1 hour ago from web
Mexicutioner’s alright. Only makes sense in the English pronunciation though. X is an H sound in Spanish.
Nick-
Phil Jackson’s ex lives in the Sunset, you could take the cigar puffing up with her.
Did Coney really ask if Deolis Guera was related to Vida?
Kennedy was ripped to shreds for his comments after the Anaheim loss. He was trying to sound stoic and like he was confident that things would be better, BUT it didn’t exactly come across that way.
And hopefully Girardi’s pow-wow with Joba can get him going in the right direction. Kids, what can ya do?!?
J-Dawg, what pow-wow are you talking about? I haven’t heard anything.
pat: Humor makes everything better. I know from personal experience. It really, really does.
“Did Coney really ask if Deolis Guera was related to Vida?”
No he said “no relations to Vida Guerra”
I wish I had sound bytes of those interviews IPK’s most cockiest moments were hilarious.
Buddy, Phil Jackson’s ex has obviously suffered enough already, she doesn’t need to be burdened with more complaints about his offensive behavior.
I would rather take it up with Italian Equal Opportunities Minister Mara Carfagna.
“J-Dawg, what pow-wow are you talking about? I haven’t heard anything.”
They beat up Joba.
Rebecca
Whenever AJ gets in a jam, I’m now going to imagine him telling himself Knock, Knock jokes.
GB,
You’re right about about 17 games. It was the last day of the season. They split a doubleheader against the Sox. Won the first game (Moose’s 20th) then lost at night.
m,
They need to go 47-31 over the rest of the season to win 97 games. 77 wins is getting them a better pick next year and that’s about it.
Oh, just that Girardi said after Joba’s last start that he would be having several conversations with him about what Joba can do to improve himself. Maybe pow-wow isn’t the right word.
“The Mexicution” is taken already.
Joakim Soria
I happen to like “The Mexican Gangster”.
*Mexicutioner
Actually 77 wins will probably earn them a new manager as well.
Possibly a new GM.
Cheaper seats for us….
An unprecedented amount of ridicule….
What else?
Okay, just saw some highlights at mlb.com. Please don’t play Johnny tomorrow. Please? Let’s try: Cabrera/Gardner/Swisher
yankees.com has this headline: “On Thursday, Yankees will hand the ball to ‘Ace’”
I guess any of those nicknames will work better for Aceves than Fettuccine Alfredo.
Was Phil really smoking a cigar at MJ’s funeral?
Did you guys see on CNN about the ghost sighting at Neverland?
I can’t believe it turned out to be some lighting effect. I totally thought Jacko was back for one last moonwalk.
Apparently there was also some audio. It’s real faint and hard to make out but you can clearly hear Michael whispering….”Trade for Halladay”
