Mr. Cone goes to Washington
One of our readers, Rob, tipped me off to this story on Politico.com about the witnesses that will testify at the Senate Judicary Committee confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor next week.
David Cone is a majority witness. Cone was a powerful member of the MLBPA in 1995 when Judge Sotomayor issued a ruling that helped end the strike.

I know one thing, Cone is one of YES best color guys. I’m not a fan of Flaherty, who is boring to me nor Leiter, who talks too much. I wish Paulie would do more games and they rehire Kaat.
That way we’re stuck with Kay along with Cone, Paulie, Singleton and Kaat.
If you have MLB Network, you can listen to Kaat and Costas. They are doing the Mets-Dodgers game tonight.
When Sheffield retires, I wouldn’t mind hiring him as a color commentator for YES.
SJ44–
Not in NY, the Mets are on SNY. MLB Network is WAS-HOU.
JP Riccardi is NOT trading Halladay within the division.
Youuuse sparkles in relief:

Livan already in some trouble here
Rebecca,
It must blacked out in the metropolitan area.
We don’t need to go over why the “He won’t trade him within the division argument” holds no water. Its laid out in other threads.
He will make the best deal he can for the guy and if its with a division foe, so be it.
The suspended HOU-WSH game?
I like Cone he does a nice job. Cone, O’Neil and Singleton are the best doing the games. Flaherty is boring and is clueless he thought Hughes would struggle out of the bullpen.
I like Flaherty, Leiter, and Singleton.
Moose would be a GREAT announcer.
Flaherty reminds me too much of the no-smiles type teacher you grew up hating.
I like Cone, Singleton and O’Neil.
Singleton’s voice is really soothing.
I would kill to hear just Cone and O’Neil call the game for the sheer humor value.
Coney has gotten a lot better in the booth this year.
He’s also the guy that put the bug in the ear of Cash and Girardi to keep Hughes in NY and put him in the bullpen.
He sold it pretty hard that bullpen work will be better for him than Scranton work.
Another guy who really understands pitching. He’s also a fun guy to be around.
Nephew watch…..Just hit an RBI double after and 8 pitch AB to tie his game 1-1 in the first.
He’s now hitting .375 with 7 RBI in 7 games.
The way Flaherty talks, he sounds too much like that teacher doing role call in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Fernando Martinez just went on the DL for the Mets.
I’m trying to describe the sheer absurdity of what is happening to the Mets and I can’t. I’m speechless.
“Nephew watch…..Just hit an RBI double after and 8 pitch AB to tie his game 1-1 in the first.
He’s now hitting .375 with 7 RBI in 7 games.”
Think maybe he could stand to be bumped up a level?
it’s amazing how well prepared Cone and the other Yes guys come to the ballpark. You would think that Cone can mail it in based on winning all those championships with the yanks, but he knows his stuff, it seems he is into yankee history and knows his stuff. Im glad he is in the booth and I hope he stays for a while.
Oooops. Looks like Hanrahan did get the win in the Houston/Washington game. two weeks after he was traded from the Nats to Pittsburgh. Congratulations to a history making moment.
“Another guy who really understands pitching. He’s also a fun guy to be around.”
Can you imagine the stories he can tell you while drinking at some bar. Even better yet having him telling stories with Boomer Wells.
“He will make the best deal he can for the guy and if its with a division foe, so be it.”
You may be right but it is a minority view.
I think if JP does trade Halladay in the division, the package offered will have to top the next best offer by a lot, not a little.
A lot will be determined by Halladay’s demands with respect to restructuring his current contract.
Conie is smart, but he repeats himself a lot and bores me a bit.
He has gotten a little better though, I’ll admit.
Leiter is a genius. Listen to call a game one day. He doesn’t say, “It’ll be interesting to see if he throws a changeup here…” He says, “Changeup coming.”
And 99 times out of 100, he’s right.
pena 1 for 1 (bunt single) and a sb
ajax 1 for 1 single….on a 6 pitch ab
they bat back-to-back in the lineup spots 2 and 3
4-0 Dodgers, mid 1st
Strange, you find Cone boring, but not Leiter.
I like Coney. He really has been doing a wonderful job in the booth.
Now they just need to do something about the radio broadcast.
Sterling just makes my head hurt.
Cash is King-I think Leiter packs in more information than Cone does. Cone repeats himself a bit.
Just an opinion.
Leiter is a huge republican, i wonder if he is angry that Cone will testify on behalf of Sotomayor?
I like Leiter too.
Singleton play by play, Leiter for analysis and O’Neill because I like his booth persona.
Its not a minority view from baseball people. Its a minority view from uneducated members of the media and fans just parrot that stuff.
All of the people on the MLB Network with baseball experience, like John Hart, Barry Larkin, Victor Rojas (Cookie’s son) have said the division isn’t an issue.
Even Peter Gammons said yesterday the division issue isn’t an issue.
Its about making the best deal. If he can’t make a deal, he will keep him.
However, if he keeps him, he has less leverage in the off-season than he does now. That’s why the odds are pretty strong he’s going to deal him in the next few weeks.
My point is, he won’t take a lesser deal from somebody just to keep him out of the AL East. That’s not how you do the job.
Wait,
No, it’s not that melancon struggled in the call-up. It’s that he didn’t seem to bounce back when he went down.
I wouldn’t know melancon if he walked into my living room, so I don’t know much.
But I belong to the “talk to me when they’ve arrived” school of thought.
I did make an exception for Phil Hughes, though. He’s traveled a long way just to get back, and I’m rooting for him.
“Cash is King-I think Leiter packs in more information than Cone does. Cone repeats himself a bit.
Just an opinion.”
Well, my opinion is that Leiter talks too much and that he gets boring while Cone makes me laugh at least once a night with his stories and I think his pitching knowledge is more evident to me than Leiter’s.
“The Yankees didn’t cause his shoulder injury.”
patrick-
the yankees had him pitch all of spring training without having measured his lower body strength after cashman told him to do nothing all winter.
that was what caused the resulting shoulder injury .
the lower body weakness caused him to lose his normal arm slot and be almost a foot high at times.
cashman is negligent for knowing wang was injured and telling him to do nothing until he healed over the winter and then didn’t bother checking to see if he was healed and up to full strength before pitching him like anyone else in spring training.
the yankees most certainly created conditions that were conducive to causing the shoulder injury.
just like they caused joba’s shoulder injury last year by stretching him out too fast.
despite what you say in your allegience to cashman, teams can hurt pitchers and in wang’s case they did.
wang , for his own sake really needs to move on.
Pete or anybody else know if Melancon was called up because i heard it and I dont see it any where? and Cervelli in his first triple-a it was a sacrifice Fly that just missed a grand slam by about a foot or two
“He’s also the guy that put the bug in the ear of Cash and Girardi to keep Hughes in NY and put him in the bullpen.”
So that’s who we should blame? Bummer, I always liked David Cone
Randy,
Wang has had shoulder problems his entire career.
He had major shoulder surgery in the minors and missed 6 weeks in 2005 with the same injury he has right now.
The Yankees didn’t cause his shoulder injury.
He was throwing the ball 92-94 MPH on the day he hurt his shoulder.
It has nothing to do with his leg or hip problems.
I know you hate Cashman but, you can’t blame him for Wang’s shoulder. Its a chronic issue and its why they didn’t give him a long term deal in the winter.
m-Possiby he was disappointed after being sent back down?
Or it could have been a slump. Even Price was struggling earlier in the year while in the minors. And Melancon’s numbers as of now are, I believe, excellent.
Patrick,
The best thing that has happened to Hughes was going in the bullpen this year. It not only changed the makeup of the pen for the better, it gives him Mariano Rivera as his season long tutor.
That will benefit him more than any starts he would have made this year. Mariano is the perfect guy for Phil to learn from when it comes to pitching.
Jen, thanks for posting the link to Kim’s blog re: AJ/Cervelli. AJ is a very hard worker – and I think this hard work is helping him this year. He’s given us innings and he’s stayed healthy. The fact that he sought out Cervelli to thank him speaks to his character very well – and it sure has to make Frankie feel good.
Didn’t see the new post… this is my response to randy:
No offense randy but I don’t really trust your analysis of what caused Wang’s shoulder injury. Due to your preexisting biases towards the organization and also due to the fact that you don’t have a medical degree (as far as I know) I don’t see why we should believe that his arm slot caused the shoulder injury.
It really is a baseless conclusion.
I don’t want Wang to “move on” and I don’t think the Yankees want him to either.
When Wang is back in August dealing and when he’s back next year winning 17 games I’ll accept your apology on Cashman’s behalf
“The best thing that has happened to Hughes was going in the bullpen this year. ”
Disagree for reasons I’ve already stated 100 times. It’s not that good for Hughes development and it’s not good for the Yankees.
Girardi misused Melancon when he first came up here
He is a stud, it is baffling that the organization thinks guys liks Robertson and Tomko are more valuable than Melancon.
He should be up here setting up for us right now.
Mo sounded very happy to have Youuse in the pen right now.
Patrick-If it gives us the best chance to win a WS this year I think it’s worth it.
Its great for both. Its been great for the Yankees and it continues to be now that he is fronting Mariano and its great for Hughes because its the most success he’s ever had at the big league level. That’s invaluable and it will make him better in the long run.
I love Cone in the booth. No offense to Singleton, but he’s not my favorite.
Does anyone know if Kay will be back in the booth for the series in Anaheim?
Is there any actual evidence that transitioning Joba from a reliever to a starter caused his shoulder problems last year or just speculation? I would think there are plenty of pitchers who have made that transition without running into injuries, considering how fluid most pitching rotations are.
i just heard Melancon for Robertson it makes a LOT of sense considering robetson has been terrible of late and Melancon has been phenominal of late 7.2 scoreless 3 hit and only one walk over his last 3 apperances
“If it gives us the best chance to win a WS this year I think it’s worth it.”
I don’t think it gives us the best chance to win a WS.
Patrick-I do.
“Its great for both.”
Oh well in that case I agree with you!
Geez, did you think repeating the same thing over and over would convince me?
I disagree with you. Leave it at that.
“No offense randy but I don’t really trust your analysis of what caused Wang’s shoulder injury. Due to your preexisting biases towards the organization and also due to the fact that you don’t have a medical degree (as far as I know) I don’t see why we should believe that his arm slot caused the shoulder injury.”
patrick-
due to your preexisting arrogance , lets just say you could put what you know about developing pitchers into a thimble and there’d be room to spare.
Is there history between Patrick and Randy I don’t know about?
If the yankees acquire holladay, mlb will ban the yankees for the rest of the season.
And why the hell would they want to give us a powerhouse?
sj44-
i know you love cashman , but the fact is cashman has never appreciated the way wang pitches. he’s always encouraged changing him from the low strikeout guy he was when he had success.
and you can’t possibly with your experience say the yankees have handled wang correctly this season.
why would you expect wang to stay healthy pitching out of an unnaturally high arm slot all year ?
that’s a recipe for disaster. we were always told it would come down . it never did. what’s your and cashman’s plan? pitch him until he breaks?
i realize you are excited by the overall success of the team , but personally i’m disgusted by the way wang was treated this year.
as i said before, cashman doesn’t deserve him and i believe it’s time for wang to move on for his own good.
Wishing I could use an expletive to accentuate my point, but, respecting the rules, I will say that is just way cool, man, way cool.
