As bad as Joba has pitched, it’s not just him. The fact is the Yankee starting rotation doesn’t have a single pitcher with an ERA under 3.70 except for Aceves who has started 1 game. The combined ERA of the 7 guys who have started games is 4.35. The Yankees are 23rd in baseball in ERA at 4.41 and 11th in the American League. In the AL only the Angels, Orioles, and Indians have pitched worse.

Until they figure this out, which to me means getting a manager and coaching staff who have a clue on how to use pitchers, nothing it going to change. How this team is 1 game out is beyond me. They pitch like a last place team.

Alex should have been an All-Star this year. I mean it’s good he’s getting 4 days off. But he has the numbers.

Well, it’s a good thing the Yanks have some $$$ and prospects because unfortunately they’re going to have to cash some in and get a starter.

Wang is unknown.
Pettitte can’t really pitch well at home.
Joba can’t pitch anywhere.
Phil’s in the pen and it would be lunacy at this point to try and do anything else with him.

Halladay is a long-shot at best and one would think it would now take a Hughes led package to get him.

Washburn or Bedard ?

Probably both available. I’ll take Washburn.

And to add to my earlier post, Burnett has had great stuff all year, but that doesn’t mean he has always pitched well.

It’s certainly possible that right now Joba feels the best he has felt all season, even though the results don’t show it. He’s not dilusional in making that statement.

I know Derek is never politically incorrect but he didn’t seem too angered by Joba’s performance even citing the extra outs given to the Angels such as Arod’s error. I know Joba seemed to not take responsibility in his interview but I thought it was telling he said he was meeting his expectations a negative 100 and was very embarrassed.

Agreed. Basically what I meant is I haven’t given up on him and hope he can turn it around in the all star break and I don’t think his teammates are as infuriated with him as people are blowing up on here about.

Joba threw a 97 mph fastball on the strikeout pitch to Figgins in the first. He had velocity today. He said he had his best stuff I don’t recall him saying starts. I am sure he knows his best start was his 8 inning performance. I did watch to see if he was shaking off Molina and it didn’t seem like he was (this isn’t a Molina/Cervelli/Jorge debate I believe Jorge is the best catcher to have starting) which could be an improvement in terms of not only relying on his slider and mixing up his pitches.

To be fair, Joba did NOT say that his last two starts were the best he has had. What he said was he had his best stuff of the year in his last two outings.

“stuff” could mean fastball velocity, sharpness of breaking pitches, etc. And that doesn’t surprise me because his velocity was a lot higher today than it’s usually been.

However, what Joba conveniently forgot to add was that even though his stuff felt good, he did not execute each pitch the way he should have. It’s okay to say you have good stuff as long as you admit that your location/execution was terrible.
