Melancon on the way

Peter Abraham
July
10

There is a sure-fire method to assure the Yankees will make a move: Go to the movies and shut off your phone.

The movie — Public Enemies — was tremendous (as most Michael Mann films are) and when I turned on my iPhone afterward, there were several messages saying Mark Melancon had been recalled from Triple-A Scranton.

No word as of yet who will be optioned out. I would guess either Jonathan Albaladejo or Dave Robertson. Through Alfredo Aceves will be be available until after the break, once a player is sent down he must remain in the minors for 10 days unless another player goes on the disabled list.

So sending Aceves down would mean losing him for the first three games after the break. I’m not sure he’s the No. 5 starter moving forward. There seems to be a lot of Sergio Mitre love out there.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are tied for first place with the Red Sox as the All-Star Game approaches. Let’s get ready to rumble. Nothing better in baseball than a summer-long pennant race.

    this time pitch better

    First place feels darn good.

    repost:

That’s pretty funny, Nick. The guy probably thought you were funny kine, staring at his eyes.

So, according to Kepner, Gardner had 2 rbi for the 3rd straight game? And we’re apparently tied with Boston? When did all this happen?

Geez, time flies when we’re winning.

Would be good to take the series, and maybe Joba will have the reverse LoHud jinx.

  4. 77513

If Aceves is going to get another start then they could send him down and call him up after the allstar break. I would get rid of Brett Tomko he is there worst reliever.

  5. Bronx Jeers

“maybe Joba will have the reverse LoHud jinx.”

    That’s what I was thinking.

Let’s have a good ole Joba for Halladay slugfest tomorrow.

Naturally, Joba will pitch a gem and the next day we’ll all say how stupid it would be to give up Joba for a fossil like Halladay.

m, I didn’t have to stare at his eyes for more than a split second to tell they weren’t Cervelli-esque. And a lot of guys develop a talent for sizing things up quickly without staring straight on, especially things that come in pairs.

It was really his voice that was dead-on Cisco… he had the same kind of hybrid accent and inflection. I was able to keep from laughing by concentrating on what my tranmission was costing. :(

  8. Brandon... I'M AWESOME !

    “Melancon’s Revenge” :)

Christian Bale was great in “Public Enemies.”

    Memo to Melancon: Throw Strikes!

  10. stuart

    DFA Tomko..
Melancon back, he will stick this time. I hope….

    Yes…………………..

  11. m

    Nick,

Too bad, I escaped. I thought it would cost major $$ (foreign car) as the mechanic told me about dust and how they would have to rebuild. But I escaped with changing the transmission filter.

mi madre? Not so lucky. Her tranny on her foreign car (much newer and sleeker than mine) blew just after her warranty expired. She went off on the service department. Of course, it got her a discount when she purchased a newer model from the same dealership. :stupid:

So you can tell if pairs are real or not? Versus fake? You know, like contact lenses?

  12. Pat M.

Just think we spotted those humps 8 games…..The Boston Red Sox are not as they’re record would lead you to believe……If I write it enough times, maybe some will start to believe this also……Nick in SF, no game Monday , right ????

  13. m

Pinnochio lied last time. He told Gepetto he could throw strikes. :(

  14. Mark

I dislike Christian Bale to the utmost (the word that comes to mind when I think of him is ’smarmy’) but he’s been in a lot of movies that I enjoy. Weird to hate the actor but like his movies.

I really want Melancon to succeed, but if he’s going to stick, he has to throw strikes and go after hitters. Take a page out of Hughes’ book. Dude sucked until he started going after hitters. If you get hit, fine. If you get hit because you’re nibbling and force yourself to throw a strike on 3-1 or 2-0, not fine. Even worse if you walk people. Same goes for Bruney (who is now in the witness protection program) and Chamberlain.

  15. Bronx Jeers

I see that all the official standings list Boston above the Yankees even though they have identical records.

Could it be the head-to-head record?

    Alphabetical order?

Or, the omnipresent conspiracy against the Yankees as they re-gain their rightful place as WORLD DOMINATORS.

  16. Richie

The other thing is that I hope: a) Melancon gets regular work, at least initially; and b) that Girardi doesn’t bring him into a bases loaded sitch until he develops some confidence. I thought that was the mistake with Roberston today, although it’s still on Robertson because he needs to trust his stuff, which is good enough to be trustworthy.

  17. Richie

    Alphabetical, Bronx Jeers.

  18. Nick in SF

All I’m saying is I could tell the mechanic didn’t have Cervelli eyes without trying to look deep into his soul, Putin style.

  19. The Curious Case of Joba Chamberlain

I also went and saw Public Enemies tonight. I loved it! The cast was great. Really enjoyed the way it was filmed. Michael Mann did a great job of making you feel as if you were in the fire fights. Just thought it ran a little long. All and all I would give an 8 out of 10.

  20. Nick in SF

Pat M: tell you what, if the Yanks play Monday at the Big A, the tickets are on me.

  21. Bronx Jeers

    Alphabetical?

    That’s an easy fix.

Ladies and gentleman, your 2009 Borough of The Bronx, New York Yankees!

It’s fitting considering who they’re playing this weekend.

  22. Mark

Richie, in regards to Melancon getting regular work, that’s sort of tricky. Like if your starter goes six innings and it’s a 4-3 game (or 4-2 or whatever) do you really call on Melancon for the seventh, even though you have Coke/Hughes ready to go? Even Albaladejo, who has pitched decently his last few times out. You would have to have a lot of guts to go to a just-called-up rookie in a close game. You know he’d get grilled if Melancon worked his way into trouble in a 6-5 game. If you have a cushion, or a starter gets knocked out early, I’m all for getting Melancon his work, but the main goal is to win the game. You can’t sacrifice that just to let Melancon learn on the fly. So if he comes up and then ends up rotting in the bullpen because Hughes and co. are needed in tight games this weekend, I’ll live with that.

  23. Tucker

Makes sense to send Ace down now. Give him one start in the minors so he can stretch out. Bring him back up for the fifth game following the All-Star break. That will give him a little bit more arm strength for a potentially longer start when he returns to the bigs. And he can stay in the fifth slot until Wang returns, if he does.

  24. m

In the grand scheme of things (as in we got the win), it doesn’t really matter.

But I’m still peeved with the back to back walks by Robertson to force in two runs.

  25. Bronx Jeers

    Disturbing news:

The boys over at It Is High are reporting that John Sterling, after Wednesday night’s win, did not deliver his signature win warble.

This is devastating news and could send shock waves throughout the Yankee Universe.

Read about it. We may need to prepare a viking funeral.

That makes the most sense. I dont undersand bringing up Melancon and then sending down Robertson because he cant pitch on Friday. I know Robertson struggled on thursday but he has been pitching well and you dont know what Melancon will give you. If would make sense they send down Aceves get him stretched out more and have him return to start against baltimore after the break. And if Melancon does a good job than DFA Tomko.

  27. m

    Oh, Bronx Jeers,

Both Sporting News Radio and ESPN Radio used his Tex call for scoring updates. He said it went to left center field, and then went into his call with a Tex message to right field, and then he laughed and corrected himself. It was pretty hilarious when it happened.

But to hear it on the radio several times as I was driving this afternoon was quite embarrassing. Like they were doing it on purpose. Even though it was the only Yankee homerun call.

Today was the first game in which there wasn’t a homerun at the Trop. The last venue to be homerless in a game.

  28. m

    What’s the most unlikeliest:

    1. The Yankees would be tied with Boston
    2. The Giants would have better records than the NL central and east division leaders
    3. The Cubs would be at .500
    4. The Mets would be in 4th place
    5. The Angels and Rangers would be tied

  29. Ben

m, i would go with 2. SF really surprises me this season i just hope we won’t need to face their pitching when it counts.

  30. Bronx Jeers

Yeah as today was a day game, I was listening instead of watching. He was all over the place today.

He’s all over the place all the time now.

And as bad as he’s been, I’d probably still miss him if he left.

It’s like he lays a lot of eggs ….but I need those eggs!

  31. NYYanksFan

Some of Jeter’s neighbors don’t think he’s being neighborly.

    http://www2.tbo.com/video/2009.....sue-43467/

  32. BFARBS

It could be that they are going to DL Bruney. He hasn’t pitched in a while, and while he is still technically the eighth inning guy, they haven’t used him in that role in a while, and the reason (aside from Hughes’ brilliance) is that he’s not healthy. Keep in mind he lied about an injury before. I say Bruney goes on the DL.

  33. DB

Why would a fifth starter be need 3 games after the all-star break? He can go down now and get a tune up start while MLB is on their break. It makes perfect sense.

  34. Mackenzie

Everyone wants to DFA Tomko… Sure, he has no upside, but he hasn’t been that bad. He fills a need for this team: long reliever. Aceves and Hughes are both too valuable to fill that spot, and the way Wang, Joba, and whoever replaces Wang in the rotation for the next few starts have been pitching, we need that long man. Tomko has a 1.19 WHIP. Only Mo, Aceves, Coke, and CC have better WHIP’s. The ERA is bad, but it’s right at the level of a lot of mopup men/last guy in the bullpen types.

Just because he’s old doesn’t mean he’s useless. If Joba goes three innings tomorrow, what do you do?

  35. Mackenzie

And seriously, Sterling didn’t do theeeee Yankees win tonight?

  36. Jack Knight

Christian Bale’s character was developed so weakly. Given that the guy
he was playing killed himself, you would think they might have tried to portray as someone who maybe felt some remorse for the things he’d done. Besides a few pauses after killing, that wasn’t the case.

John Dillinger on the other hand was so dynamic, and developed so well. And of course Depp aced it as he would.

Public Enemies gets a B from me. A lot of it seemed a little too cut and paste, rushed maybe.

  37. Jones

They had a article in the Tampa Tribune a month or 2 back with soon to be new neighbors complaining about his property going up.

  38. Cash is King

Regarding “Public Enemies” it’s inaccurate in a lot ways especially in regard to how some of the bad guys died in it. Anyhow, I enjoyed the film, but it shouldn’t use for a history lesson regarding those bad guys or why Hoover blackballed Purvis after Dillinger was done for.

  39. Giuseppe Franco

I live 5 minutes away from the jail in Crown Point, IN where Dillinger famously escaped. It still stands to this day.

They filmed that part of the movie in the actual jail last fall over here.

  40. tom

Why not Tomko? Roberston has earned his spot.

  41. gayle

What some people are not getting is they recalled a pitcher because they need available arms. Hello Tomko is an available arm for TODAY if you DFA him that serves NO purpose as he is one of the few pitchers on the team that IS available today so that would defeat the purpose of bringing him up.

  42. SJ44

Aceves won’t get sent down either. If you do that, you can’t use him for the first 3 games out of the break since he can’t be recalled for 10 days after being sent down unless there is an injury. No reason to do that. They want the guy around to get treatment, do his side work, etc. His days on the Scranton Shuttle are over.

As Gayle said, Tomko won’t get sent down because they may need him to pitch tonight.

It will be either Albie or Robertson.

  43. Mike Tyson

Roberson pitched for a while yesterday anyway, so he probably won’t be available for a two days anyway. Besides they always have Swisher to pitch an inning.

  44. unshaiku-man

Robertson made my head hurt yesterday, walking in 2 runs, and throwing more balls than strikes!

  45. Chris

Mark Melancon was projected to be part of the bullpen for the 2nd half of the season. His 1st callup wasn’t scheduled and he wasn’t ready. He’s learned from the experience.
DFA Tomko and keep Albaladejo who can throw strikes.

  46. Giuseppe Franco

They aren’t going to DFA Tomko. They are already a couple of arms short, so it’s not bloody likely that they will eliminate one option entirely.

It’s going to be Albaladejo or Robertson.

  47. haiku-man

It got to be Robertson,Albie has been ok so far.

  48. 86w183

Choosing to DFA Tomko today would be pure stupidity when he can give you more length than anyone in a tired bullpen and Joba is not exactly an innings-eating machine.

The only reason to send down Aceves is if he is definitely starting the fifth game after the break. Giving him a Scranton start Thursday would build him up and keep him in rhythm and you steal an extra roster spot for three or four games. IF Mitre or someone else is getting the start, then Aceves stays.

But odds are it’ll be Robertson.

Yanks are 38-19 over the last 57 games… that’s two very good months.

  49. SJ44

Every 25 and person on this blog wants every veteran player released for a younger player. They should root for the Florida Marlins, since that’s their philosophy.

You don’t win with an all-kid bullpen. You need at least one veteran arm you can abuse a bit out there. For the Yankees, that guy is Tomko.

They aren’t releasing him tonight since he will probably have to pitch this weekend.

If you want to be in all development mode all the time, don’t think about making the playoffs and World Series.

This way, you can hug every prospect and put up with their inability to throw strikes, get hits and learning at the big league level.

A week of those failures and every Yankee fan in the world who wants the team to be 25 and under would be screaming for changes.

  50. jennifer

Couldn’t listen to the video but he is building that huge house next to all those small ones? And I am shocked that he is building a house so close to the street! You’d think he could find a piece of land to build his castle.

  51. talltenor

Melancon looked like the real deal when I saw him pitch in Detroit v. the Tigers in late April. He hit a rough patch shortly thereafter, though. I saw Hughes start, and pitch well, in that series, too.

I’m beginning to think that if Joba can’t go 6 or more tonight, then he really may be better-suited for the ‘pen, though I really would like to see both him and Hughes in the rotation next year.

  53. haiku-man

The oh well ,I still have job, attitude of Joba suggest he doesn’t see a problem with his outings.

He needs to listen and apply.

  54. haiku-man

    Man KC made my night.

This is a team hammered by the Cards (can’t beat them) and near the bottom of their division.

Who took on a division leader,in their own yard, beat them, and caused them to lose sole ownership of 1st place,You Gotta Luv it!

The RS will most likely win today, but the got smacked yesterday!

  55. Johhny Sac

Public Enemies was by far the worst movie I have seen since the Good Shepard. Its as if they got a cast together first, and then remembered they had to write a script. Theres no buzz or talk about the movie. This movie had a chance to be great but Mann failed like he usually does.

Anway bringing up Melancon is the right move. I think Robertson should go back down and work on his control. Even though he hasnt been great this year, you need Tomko to fill in as the long reliever.

  56. Fan Interference

    Public Enemies = Netflix

  57. RyanM

On the left side of the phone, at the top, there is a little button that you push down. After you push down, your phone will vibrate a little. ;) Then you get text messages with no noise!!!

  58. VAYanksGirl

Robertson has been great all season. He had one bad showing last night with the two walks issued. He has one of the lowest ERA’s in the Yankees bullpen. Robertson’s ERA is still only 2.53 folks. Why should he be sent down?

  59. Bryan

Sending down Robertson would be a mistake of significant proportions. The guy is K-ing everyone and is sporting a 2.5 ERA. Albs has nowhere near his potential.
