Check out Damon’s garage on YES

Yankees on Deck (on YES at 11 a.m. tomorrow) has an interesting piece on Johnny Damon.

Johnny shows off his car collection in Orlando. His newest and largest vehicle — a Mercedez-Benz van — comes equipped with three televisions, a satellite dish, a microwave, a grill, a full shower, a toilet and a Playstation 3.

Johnny also has a black RS Camaro he purchased from Reggie Jackson and a Ford Bronco in Florida Gators colors.

Believe it or not, Johnny also tells YES he wants to go into home construction when he is done playing. Check it out before tomorrow’s game.

Maybe Damon can get a clutch hit once in a while too or catch a fly ball

Can’t wait to get him off the payroll… like giambi– nice guy, but done.

We used to dominate them in Anaheim.

Los Angeles of Anaheim is another storey.

    Arte Moreno is a genius.

Damon is batting .276, likely hurting, and WAS at .280 before todays 0fer. I’d hardly put him on Giambi levels of ineptitude at this point. While his defense isn’t STELLAR, or even good, I’d say it’s a far cry from the embarrassment that was Giambi trying to play first base.

Time to take Andy out of the rotation

If Torre could take Mussina out of the rotation, Girardi can do the same to Andy. The veterans will hate him even more for it and turn on him, but it is a move that has to be done.

  12. Cash is King July 11th, 2009 at 8:12 pm

Why don’t you guys just jump off the cliff and be done with it.

  13. Doreen July 11th, 2009 at 8:12 pm

One has to spend one’s money on something, I suppose. I’m sure it’s a fun installment on the show. And I’m sure he’ll be charming to watch, and I probably will watch it. :)

  14. Nick in SF in Larkspur July 11th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Maybe Mussina isn’t coming to the Old Timers Day because he’s in secret training.

“Well, they dragged me here from Montoursville… I’ll be seeing y’all real soon.”

    Oh my goodness gracious!!!

    Curious Case -

It was supposed to be a 3-team race this season. And guess what, it just might be.

But it’s not over till it’s over.

I always figured there’d be a little first/second/third place jockeying. Stick with it.

  16. ariel July 11th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Next year Damon will be playing with his toys full-time, hopefully. His follies in the field remind me of Little League hopefuls before being schooled in how to track and catch flyballs. His fielding is an absolute embarassment to the profession.

  17. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Cash, lol – believe me, I’m upset. However, I’m just very proud of the team for continuing to fight back – they never give up. I think the Yankees are well aware of their pitching holes and will go about fixing them. I can’t even tell if that’s the real SJ because the comment about Joe and Cash having new jobs next year sounds like he’s giving up…..and then the comment about CC? I’m trying not to panic – really, lol. I just honestly don’t know what to do with Phil. If he gets put back in the rotation, he has to stay there ALL year regardless of Wang…….I don’t even know if it would be ok for him to pitch out of the pen in the playoffs due to the arm issue. It’s a very difficult situation. He can’t be expected to be a savior – he’s 23 and still learning. Let’s keep that in mind. Aceves MUST be put back in the pen – no ifs ands or buts.

  18. SJ44 July 11th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Johnny got a Ferrari that Puma gave him when he signed with them. A beautiful car.

It always cracks me up that endorsers give away 300k cars to guys that can afford to buy them and not break a sweat wtih the price. lol

I remember Nike sending Dan Marino 100 pairs of cleats one year. He was giving them out to teammates who had a similar foot size because he didn’t have any room in the locker room to store them.

  19. Keith--FL July 11th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

The Angels are like the Yankees worst nightmare…they kill us but they can’t beat the Red Sox, especially in the playoffs…the only way I can explain it is that there is a spy in the Yankees Organization who feeds Mike Soscia info on our signs, strategies, etc…how else do you explain the way they hit us, it’s crazy….like they could care less about winning the World Series as long as they beat the Yankees…..

  20. ariel July 11th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Damon, like both Matsui and Posada, is a DH, and nothing more. That’s one position where the Yankees do have an abundance of talent. Allowing any of them to perform defensively is an invitation to disaster as evidenced by Jorge’s performance today.

  21. haiku-man July 11th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Another kick in the gut Yankees.

accuscore projected a loss for The Yankees like yesterday and a win for the RS tonight. Expect to be 2 behind.

  22. Bret the Hitman July 11th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Damon will not be back next season. Nope.

  23. pat July 11th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

    Suzyn’s Postgame-

Joe- Still believes in Andy and Joba. The offense is frustrated and Girardi needs them to not play tight because they think they need to score a ton of runs to compensate for the pitching.

Andy- Is frustrated. Doesn’t know what changed in the 5th. They adjusted on him and he couldn’t re-adjust how he was pitching. Disappointed he couldn’t hold a lead when given one.

Andy using the phrase “they adjusted on me” made me wonder if he was tipping pitches.

  24. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Curious, calm down – and Tampa isn’t good enough to make up a 4 game deficit in one night.

  25. SJ44 July 11th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

    Betsy,

The reality is, if they don’t make the playoffs, Girardi and most likely Cash, are out of their jobs.

You don’t spend 210 million on a payroll to “develop the kids”. That’s what the Pirates are trying to do. Its a litle different when you are the Yankees.

You spend that money to make the playoffs and try to win the WS.

Its pro sports. Its not little league.

Its a tough business and right now the team has some serious issues to deal with in the second half.

Namely, they need 3 starters and 3-4 bullpen arms more reliable than the guys they have right now.

Could the struggling guys turn it around? Yes.

Most likely though help is going to have to come from outside the organization because the competition in the AL East is fierce this year.

When you can’t hold 4 run leads twice to a depleted Anaheim team, that’s not helping your cause.

    Give up? No.

But, I don’t have my head in the sand about the challenge they now face in the second half due to the problems they have within the pitching staff.

Chamberlain, Pettitte, Bruney, Robertson, Tomko and TBA (the “new” 5th starter). That’s half your pitching staff incapable of giving you consistent outings. Half!

    That’s a lot.

  26. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

A positive: The Yankees never gave up, not once. This team does not have any quit in them even when the pitching sucked royally and continually put the game out of reach. Most deficits are not out of reach for the Yankees – man, I love them.

  27. Cash is King July 11th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

    Betsy,

When I was a younger, I would be bouncing off the walls like the rest of you. However, as I get older, I’ve learned to spend those “high blood pressure” moments more cautiously. When Coke was having his problems and throwing the ball all around the ballpark, I actually laughed out loud as it was comical to me how this team looks when they play the Angels out in LA.

Anyhow, it’s up to CC to stop the bleeding.

  28. Cash is King July 11th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

    SJ44,

I disagree with you. I think Girardi will take the bullet and Cash will try again with a new manager.

  29. Lambchop Louie July 11th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Damon’s collection must mean the economy is taking an upward turn and media types will no longer have to take furloughs.

  30. Doreen July 11th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

    Thanks, pat.

  31. Cash is King July 11th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

    If you’re the real SJ44.

  32. RS July 11th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Oakland scored 4 off TB in the 7th and now have a 4-2 lead. There’s some good news at least (of course, the Rays still have a chance to come back).

  33. SJ44 July 11th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

    Pat,

Andy’s biggest problem at this stage of his career is, his cutter is gone. Its not the devastating pitch it used to be.

Without a cutter, he has nothing to keep righties from extending out over the plate to hit his breaking pitches and changeup.

He knows that so he pitches mostly to the outer half of the plate right now. Truth be told, his stuff isn’t good enough to just pitch to one side of the plate.

The Angels adjusted to that, worked some counts, and Andy started falling behind hitters. Once that happened, they pounded the balls he left over the middle of the plate.

Andy is a warrior and is trying hard. However, without his good cutter, he’s going to war with plastic bullets. Its not pretty.

  34. randy l. July 11th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

    sj44-

i don’t really know how to have 7 starters with the way the rules are with triple a and the restrictions on players going back and forth, but a team like the yankees needs 7 pretty good starters to come up with 5 good ones at all times.

at the beginning of every year i look at how bad the 7th and 8th guy are because i know i’ll be seeing them starting games.

like i said , i don’t have the answer how to do it ,but the gm who figured out how to do it would get executive of the year for many years running.

  35. Cash is King July 11th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

How can a pitcher lose his good cutter?

  36. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

I agree, SJ – but I thought you made it sound like you thought it was a foregone conclusion that the Yankees wouldn’t make the playoffs. In any case, I totally agree.

What do you think about my comments re: Phil? If they return him to the rotation, (a) he can’t be a savior – he’s a kid and still developing and (b) he has to stay when Wang returns or else you end up jerking him back and forth between the rotation and pen?

Do you agree that Aceves has to remain in the pen? If so, then our pen consists of Mo, Coke (tough day today, I take it – I was out – but he’s been very good), Phil, Aceves……..bring Abaladejo up. How many other arms do we need? If we take Phil out, then we don’t have a reliable 8th inning man. Tough, tough.

I think that it might be because his pitching arsenal has been reduced by one pitch….his cutter. without that, he’s sort of defenseless against right handed hitters.

  38. timo July 11th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

“We used to dominate them in Anaheim.

Los Angeles of Anaheim is another storey.

    Arte Moreno is a genius.”

In 1994 I attended all four games of a Yankee road sweep (they were actually the California Angels then). Mattingly got his 2000th hit on Saturday and pinch hit a winning HR on Sunday.

So all we have to do is wait for another strike year and we’ll be all set.

  39. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

I was out during the Robertson mess, but I agree with those who said (on another board actually) that Phil should have come in…….same as people were saying that Mo should have been used in the 8th inning of the Sox game recently. Phil should have come in and he should have pitched 2-3 innings.

  40. igotid88 July 11th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Alex will hit at least 30hr the second half of the season.

  41. Cash is King July 11th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I wouldn’t have pitched Hughes 2-3 innings today. Despite this bad loss, let’s not lose focus on the big picture here.

    “If you’re the real SJ44.”

I think there is more than one “fake” SJ44, and they work in shifts…lol

If you go back and look – SJ44 started posting in the game thread at 6:30 pm yesterday and kept on posting until after 3 am.

Today SJ44 started posting at 8 am and has been posting all day.

If it is just one guy – he’s going on No-Doz.

  43. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

LOL Joe – gee, I wonder why the offense is frustrated. They’re not playing tight – they are doing a great job. It’s not their fault the pitching sucks. Phil is one of the best arms on the team and he’s not being used enough – seriously, forget the 8th inning with this guy at this point. If he’s to remain in the pen, then USE the kid. Next year, they will reap what they sow with Phil when he’s got major innings limitations and hasn’t been able to develop his change. This year, they will reap what they sow because they are keeping him in a figurative straight jacket.

  44. Doreen July 11th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

So, the deal is the can SCORE in Anaheim, they just don’t seem to be able to PITCH there?

Well, CC’s a new guy. What’s his record v. Angels?

Perhaps he can stop the madness.

  45. Cash is King July 11th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Yup, somebody is rotten in SJ44.

  46. vince July 11th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Abreu was showing off for Cashman,See what you gave up!!

It’s amazing how thser guys crush you on other teams, and when they become a Yankee, they can’t hit or pitch. Tex was an non issue today,WHY,because he’s on vaccation. Take the money and run.

  47. Doreen July 11th, 2009 at 8:39 pm

    Betsy,

The only thing I can think of is that Girardi really wanted to make sure Phil was usable tomorrow.

  48. tampayankee July 11th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Maybe the Yankees should give Damon more time with his cars and release his pathetic playing ass. He managed to look pathetic in the field and even sadder at the plate. Yes it is a team game but today’s game shows that a big fire needs to be lit under the team if the playoffs are to be made, has beens like Damon,Tomko,Pettite and Swisher have no place on a champion.

  49. SJ44 July 11th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

    Cash,

Age and an elbow that, if X-Ray’ed, would look like ramen noodles have taken over for ligaments. That’s why Andy never submits to MRI’s or X-Ray’s. He doesn’t want to know what’s in there.

He’s a got a big heart, cares, is accountable but, the skills are eroding fast. Kind of like what Bernie was at the end.

    Randy,

Scary thing is, there is no one “right” way of doing it. Stuff just happens and when it does, its like a jailbreak. Its crazy.

    Betsy,

There are no “saviors”. They don’t exist. You grind everyday, everyone pulling on the same rope and see what happens.

I will say, I’ve come around to CB’s and Patrick’s thinking about Hughes. They need to stretch him out and put him in the rotation.

If it was just about covering one slot in the rotation, the #5 starter, that’s a different story.

However, slots 3-5 are a disaster. Andy and Joba both can’t pitch at home. Andy has blown a 7 run lead in Atlanta to an awful Braves team, and now another 4 run lead to a depleted Angels team.

Save a couple of outings, Joba has been the biggest disappointment on the team. JMO but, I think its folly to expect him to turn it around in the second half.

At some point, 4 innings just can’t continue.

I think its time to stretch our Phil, and get him back here by the end of the month. At that point, you have 2 months to make up the deficit you will have to get in the playoffs.

Make no mistake, unless slots 3-5 in the rotation suddenly find it, its folly to believe they are going to continue to win 13 out of 15.

Unfortunately, leaks have sprung all over and the options to fix all of them are limited.

  50. vince July 11th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

CC is all they have, but he gets tagged for runs too. He’s not really an ACE,He just plays one.But that’s better than what we’ve seen these 2 games!!

  51. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Cash, laughing is a good thing. I just have to try and keep things in perspective.

I don’t know what can be done with Andy – if a pitcher is done, he’s done.

  52. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

SJ, that’s fine – I agree as well. However, do you agree that Phil remains in the rotation even when Wang returns?

  53. Betsy July 11th, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Doreen, if that’s the case, that’s dumb reasoning – they had to try and win today’s game (dumb reasoning from Joe, not from you)

  54. vince July 11th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Damon mostly hits for Average like most of the player’s on the team. That’s why stats can fool you.

  55. randy l. July 11th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

“I will say, I’ve come around to CB’s and Patrick’s thinking about Hughes. They need to stretch him out and put him in the rotation.”

    sj44-

if the yankees put hughes in the rotation, how do they avoid rushing him the way you agree joba was rushed which likely led to his sore shoulder later on last summer ?

  56. randy l. July 11th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

as far as wang goes, i think the realistic thing for cashman to do with wang is forget about this year and pencil him in as the yankees fifth starter for next year, and over the winter cashman should hire neil allen to be a roving special pitching instructor who’s main job is bringing wang back to the form that allen originally taught.

he should pay whatever it takes to pry allen form the devil rays. it’s going to take a three year contract so allen doesn’t have to worry about leaving a secure job where he’s been coaching david price among others.

this would also reverse some of the coaching drain that’s been taking place at the minor league level.

the alternative is to continue the downward spiral of wang with eiland coaching a pitcher he doesn’t understand.

  57. YES Man July 11th, 2009 at 9:22 pm

I hope Damon’s car(s) have adequate sun visors.

  58. John G July 12th, 2009 at 12:20 am

So this is what Johnny is doing with the extra $12 M the Yankees gave him a few years ago. And I thought it was for the kids!
