Greetings from Gate 12

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 12, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Good evening from the Bobby Grich International Airport and Spray-Tan Salon here in Orange County. We’re waiting for a red-eye flight home via Atlanta.

(Attention accountants at the Journal News, I’m coming home on Delta via Atlanta because it saved lots of money. Please keep that in mind.)

I will not be covering the All-Star Game this year and I’m fine with that. Covering the game last year was like covering two of them anyway and I’ve seen all of St. Louis I care to see at this point. I’m going to head out on a little vacation and see my family, read a book and have a beer or two while sitting in the sun.

This job isn’t digging ditches by any means. It’s a lot of fun, actually. But time away is good no matter what you do.

The blog will soldier on, albeit not quite as frequently for a few days. I’m not covering a game again until a week from today. But there will be a post or two every day. That’s the plan at least.

The next few months are going to be busy and a lot of fun. What is better for baseball fans than a pennant race? The Yankees were playing catch-up by this time last season and now they’re right in the thick of it.

Anyway, they’re calling the flight and some sleep awaits. Catch you tomorrow.

Be careful about finding some mediocre pitchers on a bad team in the NL and expecting them to come to NY and the AL East and perform in the middle of a pennant race.

We’re not just looking for a warm body. We’re looking for someone to outperform Joba and Pettitte.

Have a great flight and mini-break Pete!!!

  5. Y 27 July 13th, 2009 at 12:11 am

Why couldn’t we go into the break off the Minnesota series?

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus July 13th, 2009 at 12:12 am

    Pete gets a break…

I get to figure out how to write a 15 page paper on the desacralization of the French Monarchy during the Enlightenment…

    I need a job. so. badly…

  7. Nick in SF July 13th, 2009 at 12:12 am

It used to really be a pennant race… before my time. Now it’s a division race… with the AL East division and the Wild Card division to pick from… more teams in it, more excitment, perhaps… but the pennant itself will not be decided until September is well in the rear view mirror…

Wow. I feel bad for you. Tell me, when was the enlightenment??? Was it Thursday when people saw that Aceves starting maybe wasn’t such a great idea afterall??

LOL Pete, Kepner didn’t word it the way I worded it, but you don’t have to be Einstein to read between the lines…….

  12. Nick in SF July 13th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Sometimes I like Kid A best, sometimes I prefer OK Computer.

It shouldn’t be that bad… You can probably get a good 3 pages out of the beheading of Marie Antonette alone. LOL

Just say the guillotine came down very very very very very very very very very very slowly.

I take that back. It probably went down fast. LOL

“After the SALLY League finished last year, they brought Tyson up to sit on the bench and get a little experience and help teach some of the kids. That’s pretty unusual to bring up a coach after one year of minor leaue managing.”

    Wow, high praise indeed!

Sounds like they really like him…

    ————————————————————

I’d be willing to bet that he comes to NY to coach within a couple of years, if and when Pena or Kelleher move on to bigger things. He’s a pretty smart guy and a hard worker. He’s needed an extra coach in Charleston, There were only two, a hitting coach (Sherman Obando) and a pitching coach (Jeff Ware) but they finally brought in a third coach in Greg Colbrunn as the hitting coach and made Obando his bench coach.

Erica: Ah, but see, by the time the guillotine game down the desacralization had been complete!

The idea is writing about the literature and developments in philosophy, science and medicine that led to the populace beginning to think of the monarchy as something other than divine–and thus removed the protection the monarchy have.

    My head hurts.

    Guillatines fall quickly.

It’s 3-game road sweeps that happen slowly. :(

Tex has 3 RBI in July.

    Rebecca-

Mine too. I am sorry, but there are just too many big words in your posts. Everything I know about the French Revolution was learned from reading the cliff’s notes to “A Tale of Two Cities” in AP English and between passing notes in freshman european history class

Pete blew it. He should have written “Good Evening from Gate 12 at the John Wayne International Airport in Orange County” and more than 1/2 the readers would have figured it was one of his ‘joke’ airport names.

Sorry for the long link, but the WSJ did an analysis of the toughest pitches to hit in baseball. Our own AJ made the list.

tinyurl is a great way to shorten links.

But maybe Doc’s talent is too big to make the link little.

I think I would agree about OK Computer over Kid A, but I don’t feel that way every moment of every day.

I’m glad no one said The Bends.

  32. stuart July 13th, 2009 at 1:07 am

interesting the pen stunk before Aceves came up early in the season and the pen stunk in the first 2 games when aceves was not availabel.

is that a coincedence or not?????????????

    __

Partially. Wang’s injury has been causative as well.

Another factor is that it was moronic to start Aceves if it meant that Tomko stayed at Alby’s expense, and if Hughes wasn’t going to be used more flexibly. So it wasn’t just Aceves’s present or absence. It was how poorly they reacted to it.

  34. RS July 13th, 2009 at 1:25 am

I thought it was a mistake to start Aceves on Thursday, even before the decision was made.

Putting an experienced Melancon and an ineffective Robertson in to cover what would have been Aceves’ innings on Friday or Saturday is like making Igawa fill in for one of Sabathia’s starts.

Not only do you take away a strength, but you turn it into a complete weakness. The backend of our bullpen is still strong, but I don’t think you can discount all the games the Yankees won because of Aceves’ shutdown performances in the middle innings. This team, because of its tendency to score runs late, needs good middle relief.

RT @espn Manny Acta says he’s been fired as manager of Washington Nationals – http://tinyurl.com/lqje4t

  36. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! July 13th, 2009 at 1:39 am

I got a question here, it’s wierd but legit.

Is Manny Acta the first ML manager fired via twitter ?

  37. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus July 13th, 2009 at 1:51 am

    Brandon:

    Seems so.

  38. Richie July 13th, 2009 at 1:51 am

Given the payroll disparity, has Acta really done a worse job than Girardi? I don’t think so.

  40. dennis-Costanza July 13th, 2009 at 2:02 am

That is really an impossible comparison IMO.

  41. Nick in SF July 13th, 2009 at 2:09 am

I’ve considered what you said, dennis, and I’m not sure I can endorse it.

I will say I hope that, upon season’s end, the record of the Tampa Bay Rays will pale in comparison to that of the Yankees.

  42. dennis-Costanza July 13th, 2009 at 2:16 am

    Nick,

I never should have said it. I felt bad afterwards as this is a baseball blog. I was just trying to get a laugh and I should just leave that to your posts.

    My bad.

Hope you had a good weekend. I start trading in less than 3 hours so insomnia is in full swing.

I hope you are right. I want a Yankee/Sox ALCS.

    -dennis

  43. Al from BK July 13th, 2009 at 2:21 am

Man this sweep leaves a bad taste. I think the Yanks need a visit from the Doc ;)

  44. Nick in SF July 13th, 2009 at 2:24 am

dennis: I was not offended in any way, but I think it was an imperfect analogy in a couple ways. But it was funny. Mostly I just wanted to make a very subtle pun which I hope someone catches.

Yanks/Sox ALCS would be high drama once again. Not for the faint of heart, but I personally enjoy those highwire confrontations.

What do you think is going to happen to the price of silver in the very short and medium short terms? If you have an opinion on that.

  45. dennis-Costanza July 13th, 2009 at 2:42 am

    Nick.

It was a great pun. Many people will get it and that is what brings me back here!

I trade crude oil. I do not trade precious metals.

Silver is a great hedge. July is a busy month for gold/silver. I believe the market(NYSE) is due for a setback prior to Labor Day so it it is a good time for metals IMO. However, I am wrong as the number of times I am correct.

    -dennis

  46. Nick in SF July 13th, 2009 at 3:05 am

Thanks, dennis. I have a very small quantity of silver I had forgotten about for many, many years, which I found buried in a drawer when I moved a few months ago.

I almost sold it a few weeks ago when it was at around $15.75. I blinked and now it’s over $3 lower. It truly is the craziest of metals. I guess I’ll hold onto it until the rollercoaster ascends once more.

Try not to mess up oil too much, I’m driving down to SoCal tomorrow and I don’t need a price spike. Goodnight and good luck.
