Halladay is great against the Yankees, mediocre against the Red Sox and Rays, AND Angels.

I go after Washburn. Seattle needs to lose his salary, he's a lefty, and his ERA is under 3. He fits in as the #3 starter, pushing Andy down to #4, and pitcher by committee as #5. Hughes and Joba are kept, as is Montero. He's worthy of a Kennedy though, plus some lesser figures - Miranda, PJ Pellitere, take your pick - other than anyone on the current 40-man roster.

You guys should check out Halladay’s stats against the Red Sox, Rays and Angels.

You might not be so excited about acquiring Halladay after you see how he’s done.

Betsy

Richie, I’m sorry – that’s ridiculous.
___

Betsy,

What's ridiculous, is that you would say that without offering a single reason to support your baseless assertion.

Make your case.

Rick

Reality says they can’t all be kept. Good teams are comprised of some free agents, some from trades and some prospects that showed their worth.
Only so many minor league prospects will rise above AAA. It’s up to evaluators to decide who is kept and who goes in a deal.
The easiest way for a GM to get fired is to get too hyped up about prospect
__

Reality doesn't say anything of the kind, but reality is less important than logic. Logic says that you keep high ceiling, cost controlled players young players if you want have the kind of talented team with roster flexibility that Cashman has set as his goal for years.

This team has plenty of quality free agents and veterans acquired through trades. What it lacks are young prospects that are becoming young stars.

The upshot of your point is that prospects are fungible, which is provably false. Every star in the game was a prospect at one time.

Your comment about the easiest way for GM getting fired is merely another way of saying that owners are as impatient as fans and have as little knowledge about mL development.

That doesn't mean that trading prospects is a smart way to proceed if a team wants to be in a position to win very single year.

Would it surprise you? The Marlins are’nt in the habit of locking up pitchers for long term deals and are dragging their feet in Johnson’s case. Why?
-----------------------------------------------------------
the Marlins have a new stadium under construction and opening in 2011, they aren't trading any top talent right now...

except for montero, I would do any combination of minor leaguers along with hughes and joba.. i can't see how you can give up both joba and hughes as well as a high prospect like montero..

"Fan Interference-Reality Check
July 16th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Igawa, Edwar, Matsui, Molina, and Marte for Halladay…

Talk about trash for cash! Why would the Blue Jays make this trade in a million years???????"

Pretty sure he/she was being sarcastic.

Bret the Hitman
July 16th, 2009 at 9:27 am
By the way, even though Montero was 2-2 last night, the South All-Stars stole four bases off him. He also had a passed ball.
Good hit, no field – yet.

Yes, I don't understand why the Yanks don't try to move Montero to the outfield, where he could play almost every day and where we will need him as soon as next year if Damon's contract is not renewed. His bat is ready, his defense is not. A bad catcher can hurt a team just as much as a good hitter can help it. Leave the business (future business, looking a year or two ahead) of calling games and defensive catching to Cervelli, at least until Romine is ready.
