    Pettitte as a #5 isin’t that bad.

Problem is, we have no #3 or #4 starter either. And we’re getting no innings from Joba at all.

Get another GOOD pitcher behind CC/AJ and then Andy as the #5 won’t look as bad. Joba-Andy-Mitre bask to back to back is going to be tough to handle….

  2. carl July 18th, 2009 at 12:56 am

Cone should get some rest. He always looks sleepy

  3. Betsy July 18th, 2009 at 12:59 am

I used to hate Cone when he was on the Mets, but boy – he’s one of my favorite players ever. I’m so glad that the and the Yanks mended fences and that he’s on YES – he’s a fun listen.

What a remarkable day that was – I mean, Yogi Berra day? With Don Larsen in the house? Crazy…….I will always, always remember Coney going to his knees, locking his hands and putting them on his head – then Girardi, just rushing into his arms and knocking him down.

  4. m July 18th, 2009 at 1:01 am

I hope this is a good omen…for us.

Verlander will be tough, but I expect CC to have a bounceback game.

I’m not going to worry too much about Andy and Joba.

Girardi’s just going to have to have a quicker hook with those two.

Never mind trying to get guys wins, let’s get the team wins.

Don’t count Andy Pettitte out just yet. Baseball people and writers have been trying to bury Pettitte since 2004. He’s won 74 games since then.

what do you think the chances Pujols has of winning the triple crown, IF they don’t start walking him 3 times a game?

    ————————————————————

Unless Pujols cools off and somebody gets smoking hot in the NL, he’s got two parts in the bag. The batting title is still up for grabs, though. I think Hanley Ramirez or Todd Helton takes the batting title.

Agree. Andy will be just fine. He has one last run left in him. You can’t teach guile.

Zumaya reinjured his shoulder pitching tonight. X-Rays were taken in NY and he’s headed back to Detroit tomorrow to be looked at. Said he couldn’t raise his arm after the game.

I feel bad for him. Seems like he’s been on the DL more than the active roster.

Leyland did kind of abuse him he threw 36 pitches today and he threw 56 pitches on july 3rd. I dont think you want to do that to a 1 inning pitcher with arm issues.

My pleasure. However wins will have a fight on their hands. I look for a fight like the AL title in 2006 when Mauer, Jeter and Cano were about 5 points apart.

Who would have thought back in 1995 that Andy Pettitte would have been the 16th winningest ledt hander in baseball history. That’s where he’ll finish unless he pitches next year. He needs 13 wins to catch Whitey Ford.

I wish the Yankees would get a #3 type starter like Jarrod Washburn. Unfortunately, the Mariners keep winning so they’re not going to want to trade him.

The Yankees have a #3 type starter like jarrod washburn. His name is andy pettitte. If you have pettitte play in seattle, he’d put up the same numbers washburn is and vice versa. they’re very similar

    Pete and Folks:

When Lugo is released by Red Sox, Yanks should pick him up.
He’s much better than Ransonm, can play infield and outfield and steal a base as a pinch runner.
    What do you think, folks??

It will depend on how he finishes the season, I’d think. He doesn’t seem real pleased with how he’s pitching, lately. If he finishes under .500, I think he retires. He’s never had a sub .500 winning percentage before. Only one time has he even had a .500 season. Not many pitchers can claim that over 15 years.

He’s definitely had a career that is certainly worth hall of fame talk, especially considering the era in which he did it. While I doubt he ever will garner enough votes to get there (unless he pitches another 3 or so years and wins 40 or so more games), he’s defintely been one of the greats the past 14 years

  24. YankeePankee July 18th, 2009 at 1:48 am

    Hello Ramey,

Lugo has much more experience at all the positions – including the outfield. Pena can fine-tune his outfield play etc. playing everyday in the minors. He’d be a Sept call-up.
And Lugo gives them a needed righty bat off the bench.
And he’d be motivated by sticking it to the Sox.
    You agree?

    Regards.

    YankeePankee,

I just don’t see it with Lugo. And I don’t know how motivated he may be, I mean the red sox will basically end up paying him to go away. He has no range defensively anymore it seems and i just don’t see why the yankees would even take a flyer on him. ya never know though, anything is possible.

I don’t think he’d pitch long enough to get to 270 wins that he’d need. I was hoping he’d pull a Mike Mussina revival out of his hat, but, he’d really need to turn it on. 20 wins would put him at 235 (one win less than Ford). Still impressive, regardless of how good the teams he pitched for was. Never thought he’d get 2,000 strikeouts, either. He should finish this year around 2100.

  36. Richie July 18th, 2009 at 2:34 am

    Brandon,

When you have something worthwhile to say, let me know. To this point, your arguments are as non-existent as your sense of humor.

Who cares about the 8th inning if you don’t have the starters who can get you to th 6th or th 7th inning.

    btw, Yusse? Jeez.

  37. Pat M.... July 18th, 2009 at 2:34 am

Richie, At this stage of the season, there is no possible way to yanks Phil out of the bullpen rotation as there’s no one to fill the hole that he’d leave….Unless you slot Joba in there, and at this point that might not work due to his failure to blister strikes as needed…..The reliver corps are as good as there is in the game…..They need Bruney and Marte to play to their potential……Joba is the key to the staff’s success…..They also need a mid-level starter to provide innings and pitch to the level of a .500 pitcher….

  38. carl July 18th, 2009 at 2:36 am

The Tigers announcers really love Phil Hughes

“Who cares about the 8th inning if you don’t have the starters who can get you to th 6th or th 7th inning.”

To stretch him out they would have to send him to the minor leagues, what part of that don’t you understand, they aren’t going to do experiment convert BP to SP # 3 again. It was painful w/ Joba, nearly unbearable w/ Wang, he’s in the BP just for this season.

  40. Richie July 18th, 2009 at 2:42 am

    Pat M…

Tell me who is going to fill the #3,4, and possibly 5 starter roles if Joba, Pettitte, and Mitrewhatever continue to stink.

Tell me how many prospects the Yankees should burn to trade for overpriced, marginal starters.

I don’t want to deplete a farm system with several key injuries to pitchers when most of the starting position players on the ML club are in their mid-30s.

A great pen means nothing if the starters beyond CC and AJ continue to have trouble getting out of the 5th.

  41. Richie July 18th, 2009 at 2:46 am

No they wouldn’t. He was stretched out to 40 pitches tonight. They could restrict him to 40 pitches for two weeks, and then think about going to 60.

If you understood pitching you wouldn’t be making the easily disprovable points that you are making.

What does Joba’s mechanics have to do with Hughes? Answer: NOTHING.

What does Wang’s lisfranc injury have to do with Hughes. Answer: NOTHING.

Mike Francesa has been on vacation the last two weeks. We will have a better idea on what the yankees should do with Joba and Hughes when Francesa returns on Monday.

francessa will say put jobber back in the pen and put yuuusse in the rotation bc he’s lights out and jobber is just terrible, i mean just look at his whip, just terrible, atrocious

….realize all that is being screamed into the microphone as spit is flying everywhere and he’s got diet coke spittle on his lip

  47. Pat M.... July 18th, 2009 at 3:03 am

Guys, Hughes is staying put, that’s it..The bullpen is stable and is very good……As for the starters, Joba & Pettite need to provide good outings and get into the 6-7 innings…That’s it in a nut shell, it rides on them and especially Joba…I mean 100 pitch countt should get you into the 6th at least…..Rmemeber Hughes was being capped at 75-80 pitches the most when started….The Texas game he threw 100 pitches and was yanked as he had a shutout…..Simply pickup a mid-level starter…..BOTTOM LINE…..Joba Chamberlain holds the key to October….

  48. 77513 July 18th, 2009 at 3:03 am

If only the yanks had prospects like Bowden and Hunter Jones. Hughes would not be in the pen.

Isn’t that what Ramiro Pena is going to be doing September 1st?

    ——————————————————–

The original poster has a good idea. Once a major league player is released, his new team only plays him $400,000. His old team pays him the remainder of what he’s owed on his contract. Lugo is sidnificantly batter than Cody Ranson. For $400,000 it wouldn’t hurt to sign him and have him be our utility infielder for the 6-7 weeks before Pena is recalled in September.

  53. Cash is King July 18th, 2009 at 7:01 am

He’s working out at the Mets facility down in the DR anyway and will probably sign with them once his ten days clear.

  56. bru July 18th, 2009 at 8:19 am

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reminds us of a rarely used rule that could possibly come into play if Roy Halladay is moved before this year’s trade deadline. If a player signed a multi-year extension before October 2006 and is traded during the life of the contract, the player can then demand a trade during the offseason. If the team falls to trade the player by March 15th, he becomes a free agent. Halladay signed a three year, $40MM extension in March of ’06.

    very interesting.

You’re not going to see Pena until September. Thats all there is to that. Until then, its either Cody Ransom or someone else they can pick up on waivers.

I hope that we don’t have to read “Why is Cody Ransom on this team?” for the next six weeks, but unless the Yankees get an upgrade….thats what we will read.

I guess this mean that Julio Lugo will go to the Mets and become their starting shortstop and Angel Berroa will be DFA’d. Once DFA’d the Yankees will resign Berroa and DFA Cody Ransom. :)

  62. bru July 18th, 2009 at 8:42 am

i think we are going to be pleasantly suprised by the amount of minor leaguers that will be coming up to help us for the next several years.

i would not wan’t to be a mets fan now.

    no farm system at all.

minaya has made some good moves but the mets have nobody to replace their injured players.

bad job with their farm system.

  63. Fan Interference-Reality Check July 18th, 2009 at 8:44 am

Just to add, looking back at those late 90′s teams, the fans should really have alot of pride. Sure the Red Sox gave us a bloody nose (Or Sock) a few years ago, and won again in 2007. But they are not an automatic team. The Yankees of the 90′s were expected to win. It looked like they were just pushing a button. Teams came to the studium and bowed under the pressure. The 1998 -2000 Yankees displayed complete and utter dominance over baseball, and they did it with Class.

  64. bru July 18th, 2009 at 8:46 am

    lugo won’t help us,ransom won’t hurt us.

pena did a nice job for us when we needed him & it isn’t going to kill us to play ransom once a week.

we can’t just sign every player.

we have the best offense in baseball.it is the pitching that i am worried about.

one injury & we are in trouble.

  65. bru July 18th, 2009 at 8:48 am

    ——————————————————-

The Mets are a disaster!!! They keep losing players to injury at a dizzying rate. They have no minor league prospects to use in trades and their owner lost big buck$ with Bernie Madoff and can’t be a big player in free agency. I predict things will get worse for them in the next couple of years…not better.

  68. bru July 18th, 2009 at 8:53 am

yes the 90′s teams were special.
it was a truly wonderfull time.
the rs fans i worked with were destroyed.
we just had that magic with torre.
    girardi is coming around now.

he is doing a very nice job managing the lineup now.

    52 wins is great.

i just hope joba is paying attention & gets his act together.

  69. RhapsodyInBlue July 18th, 2009 at 8:54 am

the phillies have a nice farm system & have been producing players.

    happ is one.

it is going to be a long time before the mets overtake them..

they need to trade the core for a boatload of prospects & rebuild their farm system.

  71. bru July 18th, 2009 at 8:58 am

they have a good opportunity to trade wright, reyes, beltran for 9-15 prospects while lowering payroll a ton.

    why not?

how much worse can it get??

    i hope your right.

    does he have good stuff???

  73. Bill July 18th, 2009 at 9:08 am

Great job by Hughes in last night’s game. I hope Joba was taking notes during Phil’s postgame interview. Even after a 6K performance he was still humble, deflecting praise towards the offense and he even had some self deprecating remarks about hits off some bad curveballs. No ” Well I made my pitches, they just hit good pitches. You have to tip your hat to them.” nonsense.
It was good to see the NYY let him go 2 innings. I wonder if there is some ulterior motive,in case the Mitre experiment doesn’t work. After throwing 40 pitches last night,he said he felt fine, he could be bumped up 15 pitches at a time like in Spring Training and be an option for the rotation in a few weeks.
I wonder how many times Joe and Cashman have to answer the Hughes to the pen question? It is asked in every postgame. I knew that would happen once he went to the pen. Not to disparage any reliever, and Mo is a once in a lifetime pitcher, but it easier to find guys who can throw 1 good inning as opposed to 6,7 or 8. Look at Bruney. He was found in the AZ scrapheap. Phil and Joba are starters and may not be there yet but in time they’ll be really good 7 or 8 inning pitchers. Many of the top young pitchers today, Hanson, Price, Porcello, Sherzer don’t usually go past 6 IP. I think Phil and Joba will be anchoring the NYY staff for many years to come.

they have a good opportunity to trade wright, reyes, beltran for 9-15 prospects while lowering payroll a ton.

    why not?

how much worse can it get??

    ——————————————————–

The problem with that plan is that the fans probably wouldn’t show up at the new Citifield Stadium if Reyes, Beltran and Wright are gone.

The Mets are going to have to rebuild their minor league system while Reyes, Santana, Wright and Beltran try to keep the standium full. Thats a tall task and a demoralizing one for those 4 guys but its the only viable plan. Thats also why I think things will get worse for the Mets before they get better.

The Youuse/Jobber role reversal is really weird to see. Now Youuuse is the one everyone is whispering about with big smiles on their faces and Jobber is the one people are pulling their hair out over.

    Patience for both

Anyway, this is a nice read:

These are comments from readers of the Detroit Free Press. LMAO:

Zumaya blows another one, how about Leyland blows another one. French could have gone another inning but the magic 100 pitches kicked in, Ni Li could have pitched another inning Hughs went two innings for the yankees. Leyland over manages but never gets blamed for a loss but he seems to get credit for the wins. Zumaya seems to have a finger problem lately when he blows a save and now a shoulder problem. Send him to Toledo for awhile. Leyland still over manages!!!!!!!

Also, isn’t it funny how, after almost every bad outing this punk has, he complains that his shoulder hurts??? Is there a 60-MONTH DL we can put this guy on??? Get him outta here for good!!

When is Leyland going to learn – SIT THIS LOSER! If you want to win, SIT ZUMAYA! What a JOKE it was! The ONLY good thing to come out of last night’s typical Zoom-Zoom disaster is that he threw too many pitches so he won’t be able to pitch today!! Chalk up a win for the Tigers – Zoom Zoom is not leaving the bench!

Meanwhile, on a day J.J. Putz had positive developments, tossing a baseball for the first time since surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, there was this:

Jose Reyes may have suffered a setback in Port St. Lucie on Friday, although the Mets denied it. After trainers placed a ladder on the ground for Reyes (left) to do agility drills, the shortstop reportedly pointed to his balky hamstring and indicated he didn’t want to proceed.

A team spokesman disputed the eyewitness account by the St. Lucie News-Tribune, saying Reyes wasn’t scheduled to do that type of activity because he had a demanding workout the previous day.

“He had a heavy workload,” the team official said, referring to Thursday’s activity, which included facing John Maine in a batting practice setting.

However, the Mets have had a spotty track record with injury disclosures, and players have been getting upset with the handling of injuries.

A source Friday relayed to the Daily News a recent conversation between two players. One player noticed swelling in the other’s knee and asked why he wasn’t getting it treated. “They don’t want to hear about it,” the injured player replied, according to a source.

It’s just comical over in Queens. What the heck are they doing? I don’t blame any player for getting upset with that organization over the way they have handled injuries.

  81. bru July 18th, 2009 at 9:27 am

i think people have to be carefull with the hughes/joba debate.

hughes was not great in the starting rotation.

the pen allows you to use less pitches & throw harder.

i’d love to see hughes back in the rotation.

why not trade for an 8th inning arm & stretch hughes out.

we are going to need him in the rotation & he is at 40 pitches or 45 now?

the pen arm we get replaces hughes.

  82. S.A.--Serenity Now July 18th, 2009 at 9:29 am

Manager Joe Girardi said that he did not want to use Hughes as a starter because he has not had many long outings in recent weeks and that he would probably have to go to the minor leagues to build up the endurance needed to start.

“I certainly understand the reason,” Hughes said.

LMAO, it’s amazing how fast people start the Yuse to the bullpen stuff. I have a friend who now apparentlly wants BOTH Joba and Hughes to the bullpen because “they were never good starters and will never make it as starting pitchers”.

    Wow. Just wow.

Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang said Friday that his right shoulder is pain free. But Wang, sidelined since July 5 with a strained right shoulder, declined to put a date on his potential return from the disabled list. On Monday, Wang said he is scheduled to play catch for the first time since suffering his injury.

“Now, it’s getting better and better each day,” said Wang, who has spent the last several weeks rehabbing and spending time with this newborn son. “A lot better.”

S.A.-Funny that the article came out, because Girardi went on Beningo and said it’s be longer than he originally thought to get the Wanger back here.

  86. bru July 18th, 2009 at 9:43 am

wang is at least 2-4 weeks away if no setbacks.

    probably 3 weeks.

he will throw i forget when but within a day or two i believe.
if no pain he can start his way back.

getting him back will be huge.

  87. S.A.--Serenity Now July 18th, 2009 at 9:45 am

Well, it still might take a while to get the Wang back. I would rather they be careful with him. So it still might be a while. But it is good to hear that Wang is pain free.

    Baby steps with him yankees

  88. Betsy July 18th, 2009 at 9:47 am

What did the Tigers announcers say about Phil?

  89. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 18th, 2009 at 9:48 am

Our rotation is a mess and we need a reliable third starter, or we need Joba/Pettite to step up. Pettite is doing about as welll as I expected him to (which is fine, he was originally a fifth starter) so no surprises there. Joba is the one who has to, and who I think is most likely to, step up this second half.

  90. jennifer July 18th, 2009 at 9:48 am

Just realized the Soxs finally face Doc, after all year of missing him.

Also I really hope RP Does not put much stock in what laptop thief did to his team. They after all have lost 13 out of 15 games or something like that.

  91. 86w183 July 18th, 2009 at 9:49 am

I don’t think the Yankees can count on Wang at all…. anything positive they get from him at this stage will be a bonus.

No way on earth you flip flop Joba and Hughes again. Leave them where they are for the rest of the season and then evaluate their best roles for 2010 and proceed accordingly.

Mitre has about the same skill set as Shawn Chacon. The Yanks only hope to get a few acceptable starts out of him. Is he can give them six innings and 3 or 4 runs that should suffice. That’s the same for Pettite and Joba. They don’t need dominance from any of the three just competence and reasonable length.

Last three starts, Joba has only lasted 10 1/3 with a 6.75 ERA. Last four starts (one good one) Pettite totals 21 innings with a 7.29 ERA. That can’t continue.

  92. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 18th, 2009 at 9:50 am

Bucholz doing well was really, realy bad for the Yankees.

Now even if Smoltz performs below expectations (I doubt he will) they have a fifth starter and someone to slot in during injuries. Their pitching depth is insane.

  93. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes July 18th, 2009 at 9:53 am

“He throws 93-95 right now,” Presbott said. “With those mechanics, you’re going to see this kid throw 96-98 one day.”

More good stock for the system:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....homas.html

  94. Giuseppe Franco July 18th, 2009 at 9:54 am

Kyle Farnsworth was Exhibit A and Joel Zumaya is Exhibit B as to why velocity alone doesn’t get hitters out and never has.

You still have to command, locate, and throw strikes no matter how hard anyone throws.

Compare Zumaya to what Hughes did last night.

Zumaya was throwing a touch harder but Hughes was getting Strike One to almost every hitter and he was painting the outside edge with conviction.

If you didn’t have a radar gun handy, you’d think it was Hughes who threw harder last night. But no, it was Zumaya by a couple of ticks.

That’s why all the focus on velocity with Joba is misguided. You can throw as hard as you want but you still won’t be effective if you don’t have good command and cannot locate.

  95. Betsy July 18th, 2009 at 9:55 am

S.A, thanks! There is NO debate about Phil in the pen or as a starter by the Yankees – like with Joba, it’s just a bunch of hot air by mediots and fans who don’t get it (though I’ve not seen many fans, unlike with Joba, who insist that Phil should be permanently in the pen). Those folks will use AJ’s quote as proof, but he was talking about now…………I assume Phil was talking about scrapping his curve just for THAT game, lol?

  96. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 18th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Franco-You’re right, but the problems with velocity are IMO directly related to his other problems.

  97. jonathan c. July 18th, 2009 at 9:56 am

So if Mitre pitches well, is it “really, really bad” for Boston?

  98. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 18th, 2009 at 9:58 am

jonathan c.-If he does consistently well…then, yeah.

But he has a 5.36 career ERA or something so don’t get your hopes up.

“wang is at least 2-4 weeks away if no setbacks.
…getting him back will be huge.”

i think this is the wrong way to think about wang. he’s been injured and messed up because of the foot injury since last year.

i think the smart thing to do is not count on him at all and assume he’s not coming back.

this means if one more yankee pitcher goes down the yankees need a starter.

so that’s what they should be doing- looking for a replacement starter rather than basing their plans on the best of all scenarios with wang.

the most likley scenario is that wang will shows signs of progress at times , but never really get back to a sub 5.00 era guy this year.

he’s so messed up he probably should be shut down and started up from scratch again in the minors with 2010 as the goal.

if by some miracle he can contribute this year, it should be a welcome bonus and not a part of a plan.

if yankee management is planning on getting even a solid 5th starter out of wang when he comes back they are making a plan based on wishful thinking.

i would stretch hughes twenty more pitches by giving him longer and longer relief roles to get him up to 60 pitches. he’s close enough to that to be there in a few weeks.

once at 60 pitches hughes could step in fairly quickly if the unfortunate circumstance happens that another starter goes down.

this is a much better plan than cpunting on wang coming back.

  101. Rose July 18th, 2009 at 10:10 am

Joba and Andy have been inconsistent. Wang is hurt. I think Cashman is looking for starting pitching. Girardi said Hughes will remain in the pen. He has to stay there because he is so good and you have nobody to replace him.

    —————————————————————

How can the Mets trade Beltran and Reyes? They are injured and are not close to coming back.

  102. jpb1973 July 18th, 2009 at 10:16 am

“Now, it’s getting better and better each day,” said Wang, who has spent the last several weeks rehabbing and spending time with this newborn son. “A lot better.”

    —————————————————–

Didn’t Wang suffer his injury on July 4th? If so, thats only 2 weeks since the injury…not several weeks. If he truly strained his shoulder then I don’t expect to see him back with the Yankees until September.

  103. leo_serra July 18th, 2009 at 12:44 pm

  105. Paco Dooley July 18th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Great day for Cone, but when I think of Cone, my mind doesn’t flash to the perfect game, it flashes to the day I heard that the Yanks had acquired him. That to me what the start of the new era in Yankee land. I had a feeling that, with that move, they had hit the big time and could become real contenders. For that, Cone remains one of my all time favorite Yankees.
