Tonight: I’ll be on WFAN at 11:05 p.m. with Lori Rubinson talking some Yankees.

Monday on YES: The Mike Mussina Yankeeography will debut at 11 p.m. Those interviewed include the Moose, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, Willie Randolph, David Cone, Joe Girardi, Joe Torre, Tino Martinez, Brian Cashman, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Mike’s parents, Mike’s brother Mark, Stanford coach Mark Marquess and Jim Palmer along with a few no-account sportswriters.

Tuesday on HBO: The latest edition of Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel debuts at 10 p.m. ET. One of the segments will be on Jorge Posada and the progress Jorge Jr. has made after repeated surgeries for craniosynostosis. Jorge Jr. is nine years old now and doing very well. The piece also details some of the work done by Posada’s foundation to help families dealing with the condition.

Nothin’ like a little self promotion

  2. carl July 19th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

I got to watch Posada on Bryant Gumbel.

Thanks for the info about Real Sports, I didn’t know they did another segment on Jorge Jr.

    Repost:

I was one of the people worried about Mariano.

I’m unabashed. It’s going to happen eventually, there is nothing wrong with wondering whether tis is it or not.

Clearly not, but you get what I mean.

By the way Rebecca, I just responded to a couple of your posts on RAB.

We go through this stuff every year about Mo. He’s the last guy Yankee fans need to worry about.

  6. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 19th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Franco-Of course we do. As well we should.

Clearly this is not the year for Mo. Great. I’m asolutely thrilled.

But one day it WILL be the year, and then his role will be the FIRST we have to worry about.

    From Pete’s previous post:

“Joba Chamberlain said that getting away for four days helped him become more focused today on the mound.”

Now — here’s more evidence that all true Yankees fans should NEVER vote for a Yankee for the All-Star team. Vote all Red Sox, and vote often! Imagine if Jeter was hurt by that HBP. Imagine if Mariano hurt his arm in the 9th. For an essentially meaningless game.

Please — starting next year, let’s have NO MORE Yankees on the All-Star team. I did my part this year by voting for all Red Sox. Please join me next year. Yankees for the World Series, Red Sox for the All-Star Team. That’s my mantra.

  8. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 19th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

One of the first, I should say.

  9. stuart July 19th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Mo cannot be replaced so why worry about it.

michael jordan cannot be replaced and neither can Mo.

why worry about things you cannot control, one day Mo will lose it when that happens no one knows…..

You talk about Mo like he’s human. He’s not.

Mo is done when Mo says he’s done.

And the Yanks will find another closer when that happens. But don’t be shocked if he decides next year is not his last.

  11. Mark-Cant Touch This July 19th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

    Hughes or Buccholts?

  12. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus July 19th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

    Wait: I’ll check it out.

  13. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 19th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Sigmund -Mor evidence-Jeter had 2 hits today, and Mo closed out all three games! Tex had 2 HR’s this series, both game winners! And a double!

    Sorry, but I’ll risk it.

This is one of those days where I hate not having the YES network (more than usual, anyway) – I’d LOVE to see the Mussina Yankeeography! I still say it’s a shame those aren’t viewable online somewhere… but thanks for the head’s up, Pete – I will have to track it down!

  15. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 19th, 2009 at 9:50 pm

“You talk about Mo like he’s human. He’s not.”

Just for writing that sentence, I surrender this arguement..for now.

Can’t deny the truth of that one.

  16. Giuseppe Franco July 19th, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Somebody has to make the All Star team. Every team has to be represented.

And Mo is going to make it regardless because he’s always voted in by his peers.

Jeter will always make it because he’s still one of the most popular players in the game – although he deserved to make it this season because he’s having a huge year.

  17. Giuseppe Franco July 19th, 2009 at 9:52 pm

During the commercial for Moose’s Yankeeography, I thought I heard Pete’s voice.

Maybe he wants it to be a surprise or something. Oops.

    Wait Til they Come:

The “Joba Theory” as I’ve self-importantly dubbed it is the idea that Joba’s struggles can be at least partly attributed to not having pitched enough in the minors or a combination of minors and college ball (especially when compared to his peers).

Basically, he not only did not have that time in the minors to develop his pitches or to learn how to make adjustments should one of his pitches fail him, but he also missed time that would be used to developing the proper arm strength.

The cure is simple: He needs to pitch more. If all things were ideal, if AJ, CC, CMW and Pettitte were killing it and Hughes had been starting all season in Scranton, it’d be easy to make the argument that the Yanks should send Joba down to AAA to pitch more and call up Hughes.

However, as it is, only CC and AJ are anything close to ‘sure’ things and the Yankees’ current fifth starter is Sergio Mitre. So the Yankees can’t do much else but have Joba pitch at the ML level unless another option presents itself–but the cost of that other option is likely to be prohibitively high.

Jorge’s foundation does wonderful things. The children afflicted with this craniofacial dysmorphology have a very complicated road including multiple surgeries. Jorge doesn’t get the credit he deserves – great player sure; but, the fact that he gives back in this special way makes him truly outstanding!

Mike spent a lot of time with the Orioles – how come nobody from that organization (players, coaches, GM’s) were interviewed?

  21. Wait till they come to OUR house AGAIN July 19th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Rebecca-A flaw in the tehory is Joba’s sucess starting last year and in the minors, if in a more limited environment.

This is thinking optimistically, but Joba has shown to be a wunderkind; a prodigy, really. His fast rise had to be due to SOMETHING, in this case sucess. So hopefully, faster than perhaps most pitchers, he could refind it.

But good work on the research.

I would argue two points to your counter point:

    1) Relievers can’t be held to this theory because the development of relief pitching is so different–you need less pitches and, more crucially, less stamina. You only have to pitch one inning, not seven.

    2) I would argue Joba did get affected by it as a starter–he got hurt.

    3) Minors and the Majors are ultimately different levels–success at the minors, as we have seen all too often does not guarantee success at the majors.

But I do see where you are coming from.

Another one to keep a close eye on is Rick Porcello–he only had one year in the minors, and he is now struggling mightily.

  23. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! July 19th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

    Brandon,

For his mental health, I’d just suggest he start rooting for another NY team…like the Yankees.
