Old Timers Day oughta be like the Olympics: Once every 4 years. This stuff loses it’s shine and feels overdone year after year after year.

  2. carl July 19th, 2009 at 7:44 am

They have been doing it since 1939…Lets change it for Skinnyhead!

  3. Giuseppe Franco July 19th, 2009 at 7:44 am

    Um, no it doesn’t.

Love Old Timers’ Day. I’d love to see other teams do it as well but they don’t.

The only team that still does it are the Yankees.

  4. JP July 19th, 2009 at 7:47 am

I still say the time has come to change the name to “Yankees Legends Day”, especially if you’re going to bring back players that were pitching for this team 9 months ago.

I know everything is sped up in the internet age, but that ain’t exactly Old Time-y.

  5. Giuseppe Franco July 19th, 2009 at 7:53 am

I wouldn’t exactly consider names like Aaron Small, Rick Cerone, and Dave Eiland “Yankees legends” so I’m not sure how well that name would work either.

It will remain Old Timers’ Day because of tradition and that’s the way it should be.

  6. jennifer July 19th, 2009 at 7:54 am

I love OTD, glad that it is every year. We are the only team in bb that does it.

  7. Simon July 19th, 2009 at 7:56 am

    No Jim Bouton?

    good read from Joelol Sherman

  9. JP July 19th, 2009 at 8:11 am

Aaron Small and Rick Cerone are “Yankees Legends” the same way Jake The Snake and Greg Valentine are “WWE Legends”.

I could really care less what they call it, it just bugs me that “Old Timers” isn’t even factually correct.

  10. Greg D July 19th, 2009 at 8:31 am

Luis Arroyo……there’s a blast from the past

  11. Fran (the original) and OPPC member July 19th, 2009 at 8:32 am

I like Old Timer’s Day even if everyone is not an “old timer”. It is a Yankees tradition.

  12. carl July 19th, 2009 at 8:34 am

Lohud is asking me for a password

  13. Tom in N.J. July 19th, 2009 at 8:37 am

Why am I being asked for a username/password?

  14. Cash is King July 19th, 2009 at 8:44 am

Yes, we are we being asked for a username/password?

  15. Giuseppe Franco July 19th, 2009 at 8:45 am

    test

  16. Giuseppe Franco July 19th, 2009 at 8:47 am

What browser are you guys using?

I’m using FireFox 3.0.11 and there’s no username/password inquires for me.

  17. Skinnyhead July 19th, 2009 at 8:50 am

God forbid someone has an idea contrary to the John Sterling/Suzynh Waldman book of cliches. If Old Timers Day doesn’t feel forced and contrived to you by now you’ve probably only been watching the past 8 years or so.

  18. Yanksgal07 July 19th, 2009 at 8:56 am

I’m on Foxfire and it’s asking for a user name and password too.

    Go Yankees 2009 !!!

  19. Lara08 July 19th, 2009 at 8:57 am

GF I’m using the same browser version of Firefox and it asks me for a username/password

    —————–

if you want to complain for the sake of complaining you go right ahead.

But you’ll be in the corner by yourself because it’s a fun event it’s not worth getting worked up into a tizzy fretting over the name of said event.

If you don’t enjoy it, don’t watch it. Simple as that.

  21. David July 19th, 2009 at 9:10 am

    Also on Camino

  22. whatever July 19th, 2009 at 9:17 am

Same here on the annoying username/password question.

  23. 86w183 July 19th, 2009 at 9:17 am

I lost much of my interest in the Old Timer’s Game when # 7 passed on. It just wasn’t as special for me without the Mick.

Still there’s no reason not to continue it. There’s a bit of a lull right now in new “Old Timers” but soon we’ll have Mariano, Bernie, Jetes, Jorge, Paulie et al out there.

Does Alex get booed at the 2020 game? Never mind, I think his contract will still be in effect.

  24. 86w183 July 19th, 2009 at 9:19 am

I got the question but it wouldn’t accept ny name and password but let me post anyway. Strange

  25. S.A.--Serenity Now July 19th, 2009 at 9:20 am

Alright, I have Firefox (version 3.5.1) and I’m getting this user authentication: username/password thing too. :?

    Anyway, love Old Timers Day.

  26. Doreen July 19th, 2009 at 9:21 am

I was being asked for a user name/password too, but hit “cancel” and got here anyway. :)

Okay, so who’s gonna watch “Retired, Old- and Not-So-Old Timers Day today?

I was glad to hear Zimmer’s going to be there. (Maybe a good luck omen??)

CC did yesterday what I had hoped he would do against the Angels last week. Glad to see him go toe-to-toe with Verlander, in spite of not having his best stuff.

    Beautiful day today.

Joba may have issues that require the offseason to straighten out, but I anticipate a better second half from him, and it’s nice to hear him looking ahead with optimism.

He should – the world is this kid’s oyster. The Yankees just need to hold his hand while they dole out the “tough love”, and be patient with his status as a work-in-progress starter with tremendous upside.

Had to laugh reading through the Montero blog entry here. He’s been called an 80/80 power guy since go, but he happens to hit a GS last night and the refrain w/regard to Halladay is a unilateral: “Anyone but Montero.”

What happened to the jerks trying to sound mercilessly professional w/their: “For Doc, you deal him, without question.”

Like Cashman is going to do anything of the kind. If he does, I’ll fall down dead drinking my morning coffee.

All it takes is a little buzz from the media and some people just reverse course. Cattle.

Meanwhile, many people are ready to wash their hands of Chamberlain …Until he 3-hits somebody and Ks 10…then they’ll go into re-consideration mode: “Well, obviously, you don’t even think of dealing an arm like Chamberlain’s…”

    Oh, obviously.

And if Halladay 2-hits Boston – whose offense everyone over rates to begin with – it’ll be: “WE HAVE TO HAVE HIM!!!!!!!”

    LOL.

    Happy Old-Timer’s Day.

  28. Doreen July 19th, 2009 at 9:27 am

My thought about Montero and catching is this. The kid wants to catch. Never underestimate perseverance by a player. He is working hard to be a catcher. I think he’s going to be a catcher.

  29. Yanksgal07 July 19th, 2009 at 9:28 am

I for one love OTD…I go every year and this year is no exception. It’s fun to see the old and “newer” guys …brings back so many memories with each player that’s announced. I agree tho’ …since #7 isn’t there anymore it certainly doesn’t feel the same to me. I will be wearing my Mickey jersey today in his honor tho’.

I have one word for the Yankees today …SWEEP !!!!

    Go Yankees 2009 !!!!

  30. murphydog July 19th, 2009 at 9:30 am

Yup, I’m getting a drop down Lohud window asking for username and password too. Using Firefox.

Hey look, it’s Old Timers’ Day, not Yankees Legends Only day. My dad used to watch the game to see the lesser-knowns, the guys who played roles just as much as the DiMaggios and Mantles and Berras. I remember the role players too, they were just as much a part of the team and all the big games. If you only know and love the big names you’re not much of a fan IMO. The obscure names bring a smile to my face just as much as Reggie and Whitey and Yogi and the rest.

  31. murphydog July 19th, 2009 at 9:33 am

    Doreen:

Speaking of Montero, not sure if anyone linked this yet. If it’s a repeat, sorry.

  32. Giuseppe Franco July 19th, 2009 at 9:40 am

    bodhisattva,

I’ll say this much, we’ll never agree on Melky but we tend to agree on most everything else – especially regarding the youngsters.

  33. randy l. July 19th, 2009 at 9:42 am

“The obscure names bring a smile to my face just as much as Reggie and Whitey and Yogi and the rest.”

    murpydog-

yeah, seeing roger repoz in center field would be kind of fun.

or hector lopez in left field. phil linz.

how about Luis Arroyo coming in for whitey. now that’d be good.

  34. The Ghost July 19th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Francisco Cervelli batting .333 for Scranton! 38 points higher than Montero!

  35. pat July 19th, 2009 at 9:46 am

“And if Halladay 2-hits Boston – whose offense everyone over rates to begin with – it’ll be: “WE HAVE TO HAVE HIM!!!!!!!””

    Have To…..No
    Would be great to…..Yes

It comes with a price though in both $$ and people. What price people here seem willing to part with is the real discussion; not whether or not it would be great to have Halladay in pinstripes.

  36. Kelvin Ace July 19th, 2009 at 9:46 am

Why the heck is this asking for a password

  37. Mark in Tampa July 19th, 2009 at 9:47 am

As far as his size is concerned, 6’4″ is not unheard of as a catcher. Mauer is 6’5″ and does pretty good. Piazza was 6’3″. Not a good catcher, but he was able to be behind the plate for years. Carlton Fisk was 6’2″, 235, and I believe he was the all-time leader in games caught when he retired. He may very well end up somewhere else besides catcher, but if he does, it won’t be because he is too big.

  38. You Know Who July 19th, 2009 at 9:47 am

    Edwin Jackson’s line

    8 innings
    2 hits
    0 runs
    0 walks
    10 strikeouts

  39. Mark in Tampa July 19th, 2009 at 9:48 am

In my last post, I was referring to Montero.

  40. randy l. July 19th, 2009 at 9:49 am

    ” I think he’s going to be a catcher.”

does he have a natural mean streak and do people annoy him especially opposing runners that are trying to score ?

does he care more about winning than the pain that will come almost every game?

is he smart enough to be mostly friendly with pitchers even though he thinks they are the the dumbest players on the field?

can he be surly for no reason?

if all these are answered in the affirmative, the yankees may have their catcher of the future.

  41. Mark in Tampa July 19th, 2009 at 9:50 am

    “Edwin Jackson’s line

    8 innings
    2 hits
    0 runs
    0 walks
    10 strikeouts”

If I was as miserable as you, always thinking up the worst possible scenario in life and sports, I would just end it all right now! :(

  42. Felix July 19th, 2009 at 9:51 am

    passwords …crappy passwords

  43. Doreen July 19th, 2009 at 9:51 am

Thanks, murphydog – good story on Montero.

  44. murphydog July 19th, 2009 at 9:54 am

    Doreen:

You’re welcome. (BTW, I backtracked into the last thread a little and found that it was indeed linked earlier. Sorry for the repeat).

  45. DT - OPPC member (blood type - Positive) July 19th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Old Timers Day is a tradition. It sells out every year.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  46. Cash is King July 19th, 2009 at 9:59 am

“You’re welcome. (BTW, I backtracked into the last thread a little and found that it was indeed linked earlier. Sorry for the repeat).”

No big deal just as long as more Yankee fans had a chance to read the article.

  47. scooter10 July 19th, 2009 at 9:59 am

    A comment and a question…..

Can you imagine Montero-like production at catcher? If he can play catcher, you won’t find that kids of offensive potential anywhere.

    Is Old Timers Day televised?

  48. Tarheelyank July 19th, 2009 at 10:00 am

    Randy

Reading your discription I cant help but see Munson’s unshaven face. Nice that his wife will be there today.

  49. murphydog July 19th, 2009 at 10:02 am

    randy:

Your “Questions for Young Men Considering a Career at Catcher” is darn near poetry, a dusty, leather and Ben Gay scented “If”

    http://www.everypoet.com/archi.....ing_if.htm

The last line would have to be changed: “…You’ll be a catcher, my son.”

  50. sevrox July 19th, 2009 at 10:03 am

Interesting Q and A with Mickey Rivers in the Post. Mick the Quick mentions complimenting Munson to Reggie Jackson saying something like, “this little white guy can hit like us.” Excellent stuff.

  51. Paco Dooley July 19th, 2009 at 10:17 am

Nice to see Mussina and Zimmer – odd to see the likes of Homer Bush…

  52. Scooba July 19th, 2009 at 11:03 am

    Where is Angel Berroa?????

  53. Spike Owen July 19th, 2009 at 11:20 am

My first game at Yankee Stadium was OTD. I was probably 8 and have been to 100 baseball games since then but that will always be my favorite (well, besides Game 7, 2003)

  54. teddy July 19th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
