Is that a great Godzilla picture or what? The Yankees should sell a T-shirt with that image on it.
GO-JI-RAH!
This team came off the break hot. Hopefully we can produce runs other ways, though.
Dang. We’ve outscored our opponents 6-3 over the last three games. Dang.
Lots of great defensive plays that contributed to this win.
Obviously the play by Tex, and Coke stand out. But Cano’s play to fool the runner was huge as well. They didn’t hit, but it was a well played game.
Boston is winning 2-1. Texas is still right there. By the end of this night we could be back in a 1st place tie…..
And 2-2, man on 2nd, no outs in Texas. A tie for first would make this a perfect night.
Okay- Right after I typed that, Texas tied it up! I am a prophet!!!!!!!!!!!
Pete thanks for the quick Post – game post!
Game Thread get slooooooooow.
I was watching a Moon special, so I missed the defensive plays, but I caught them on the highlights……..wow!!
Even if we don’t tie for first tonight, it’s still a perfect night. Sometimes you gotta just watch your own team.
AJ is losing his touch. He didn’t get Matsui too good.
Lets go Rangers!
Okay, that picture of godzilla makes me laugh.
Three straight 2-1 wins is amazing. Last year’s team doesn’t win those games. Things are looking up.
smoltz is pitching well lately.
any score with the rays???
i got gavin floyd in my fantasy against the rays.
rolled the dice.
“AJ is losing his touch. He didn’t get Matsui too good.”
He’s been focusing on his pitching. His pie making duties are taking a back seat. LOL!
Smoltz looks terrible
Laura
Diet Coke will be happy about that.
3-2
They might as well mail the gold glove award to tex.
BTW. 2-2 in texas
The big stories coming out of this game were Andy’s pitching and the Yankees defense. Can’t always bludgeon the other team into submission. Gotta win games like this in the playoffs. How big is it to have a gold glove at 1st base? How many games did Giambi’s lack of defense cost them? Tex was such a great signing.
matsui looked embarrased
Nice tight game. Good pitching. Good D. Nice wrap. Under 3 hrs.
texas just tied it up!!!!!!!!
“They might as well mail the gold glove award to tex.”
You would think. We watch the games so we see the plays he makes each and every game. Do the voters?
haha, nice picture of Godzilla
Tex takes the lead
“Tex was such a great signing.”
So far, he’s been worth every dime.
I liked Jason when he was here. But I don’t miss him one bit. Love the dp’s that Tex is turning. We never saw that with Jason. Any guesses as to how many games Tex has saved with his glove. Today is one for sure.
Jen, I loved seeing AJ’s sneak attack, though – he’s hilarious, just like a little boy
3-2 Texas!!
That picture cracked me up.
HAHAHAHAHAHA 5-2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just listened to “Godzilla” by Blue Oyster Cult as celebration!
Tell ya what Giambi never makes that play Teix made, I love the big Stache, but I have a bromance on Teix
Smoltz pitched lousy last out…………..
No way does this team win games like this last year. We know they can score, but it’s more satisfying sometimes to win games like this because this is the type of ball played in the post-season
Unsung hero of that game was the 8th inning defense
The Rangers are hitting homers faster than LoHud commenters can keep up. Bye-bye Smoltzie!
6-2 Texas.
montero hits the go-ahead homerun in the top of the 10th
2 for 4 with hr and walk
I am going to go far out on a limb and say that before the end of Texs’ time in New York…Captian will be next to it.
YEAAAHHH Smoltz is falling apart, gave up back-to-back jacks!
5-2 Boston losing
LOL! Sox are screwed.
The benefit of good pitching is that you can weather offensive slumps. We had to face some very very good pitchers and the offense kind of carried that into this game, but our pitching and defense helped get them through it.
Thats why this yankee team can win the world series.
6-2
6-2 Texas
6-2 Texas babay
Phil Regan/Alfredo Aceves. Regan used to play and manage in Mexico. Phil Regan…..hmmmm…”The Vulture”.
6-2 Rangers!
1st place here we come.
lol Smoltz imploded. Thanks Texas. Looks like we go back to tied for first again tonight.
I wonder how the other old man making a comeback Pedro will turn out. (Hopefully he implodes as well and the Phillies will have to make a run for Halladay)
rays losing also
Cool picture Pete. I love our pitching, D and power.
“Unsung hero of that game was the 8th inning defense”
Totally agree. That kind of defense makes me laugh out loud. THAT’S why I love this game.
Superb showing by the guys. Just wish Andy could have gotten the win he worked so hard for, but the W is probably making him plenty happy.
Smoltz fell into a burnin ring of fire!! He went down down down, and the flames went higher, and it burns burns burns ……
Another home run, die, die, die, Red Stockings!!!!!!!
And, the Riverdogs won 6-1, led by a 5-run 5th inning. Both managers, Torre Tyson and Ernie Young, were ejected in the 1st and 3rd innings, respectively. Finally, a winning streak!
Here’s a link to a boxscore of the game:
http://www.riverdogs.com/dogs/.....rtcode=afx
Let me pull a Matt here and say that the Yankee offense does need to find a way to play all 9 innings. Those middle 4 innings are brutal. They just go away. I don’t know where they go or why, but they don’t get involved in the game until the 7th inning. It would be nice to win the game in the 4th inning and coast the rest of the way.
End of Matt rant.
6-2 texas
Matsui in the post-game (via Suzyn): “I totally forgot he (AJ) does that.”
Glad to watch the Sox unravel, up here in Boston they’re getting a little uppity. I had to hear on WEEI last month how they longed for the days of the 2 teams actually being competitive.
Smoltz is back baby! Shutting down the Rangers already through 5. Sox are the best. Yay Red Sox!
(that is my best impression of some of the likely posts on SOSH (and here) about 20 minutes ago)
Nice…
But check out what’s going on in Arlington…
The Pennant Race starts now, with both teams all even.
I also loved Cabrera and Arod motioning for Matsui to throw his helmet into the air.
oohlala…Gammons on BT. I love when he’s on and the Red Sox have imploded!
Lost in the shuffle was Coke sticking his body in front of the plate and forcing Roberts to slide wide of the plate.
Nice one Pepitone, I love that song.
Hey smoltz, welcome to the American League! Where giving up three homeruns happen.
Tex is the best first baseman I’ve seen since Mattingly – no one will ever touch Donnie in my eyes, but boy, Tex is absolutely superb. If he doesn’t get the gold glove this year, then there is no justice in this world.
Matsui is not longer Godzilla …
He is now MegaGodzilla.
“Hey smoltz, welcome to the American League! Where giving up three homeruns happen.”
——–
In his prime, Smoltz would have been fantastic in either the NL or the AL.
Unfortunately, this offseason some people forgot that he was 40 and coming off of major surgery.
I’m pretty sure that’s not “his prime”.
Wow Jennifer Swindal Steinbrenner is frightening.
GB: Lost in the shuffle was Coke sticking his body in front of the plate and forcing Roberts to slide wide of the plate.
Suzyn just reported the Coke said that he was going to do everything he could to throw his body in front of Roberts. “I was so embarrassed I bounced that ball.”
Even Montero is crushing it…life is good
Frankly, I think Smoltz did a wonderful job today.
Keep up the good work John
HR Montero.
Laura,
Check out this tweet by Heyman, it’s so crass (and incorrect?):
boy, mark teixeira is worth every penny. for those scoring at home, that’s 18 billion of ‘em.
12:59 PM Jul 19th from web
Two big plays – Cano deeking the runner from 1st, may have kept him from trying to score; and Coke putting his glove right on the edge of home plate, forcing Roberts to either slide into the tag or slide away from home plate. I wonder if that’s something that’s taught to pitchers, or just good fortune that that’s where Coke put his glove.
Yankees walk off with win over O’s – 6:53 pm
Game started at 7 PM we get the score at 6:53 ???

I think that Coke would play the infield if they asked him to. He’s got that dirt mentality.
Montero is on fiya 2-4 1 hr 1 bb 0k
Yanks are now within 3 games of the best record in all of baseball.
If/when that happens, the “they can’t beat the good teams” argument doesn’t hold up as well (if it ever did).
If you have the best record in baseball this late in the season, you’re doing something right.
Matsui in the post-game (via Suzyn): “I totally forgot he (AJ) does that.”
……………………………..
Uh oh, hey AJ, if I were you I wouldn’t turn my back when the MegaGodzilla is around.
m: besides watching it and posting updates, how do you want us to check out what’s happening in Arlington?
tex’s defense is so much better then Giambi it is laughable… Giambi does not even throw home…..
they stole this game, but I will take it. Offensively they did nothing…
aceves needs to stay in the pen…..
Remember that Moose-ography is on tonight ………
“Check out this tweet by Heyman, it’s so crass (and incorrect?):”
Heyman is a *&#^%$. Fill in your own phrase.
Better than Mega-Streisand (for South Park lovers, lol)
how much does that translator guy get paid, he’s been the same translator since Hideki got here, no?
Just as important… lets go White Sox!
AJ got him good with that pie. Matsui had no clue it was coming.
Good times.
Nick,
I didn’t realize everyone was following.
I just couldn’t believe when I saw a 6-2 score. And then I saw 3 homeruns in one inning.
Sorry, I got excited and didn’t read before I wrote.
But no, I wouldn’t recommend a trip to Arlington.
Can we steal Jonathan Sanchez from SF already.
Melky in the walk-off sweepstakes lead with 3 followed by Jorge and Alex with 2 and Damon and Matsui with 1.
Phil Coke interviews LOL
I was very close to Arlington recently. It’s hotter in Apple Valley.
Honestly, I love Coke’s interviews. He’s hillarious.
Phil Coke is so goofy
I really hope Coke is more intelligent than he appears on tv.
Brandon,
maybe SF makes that trade for matsui now?
How did the Yankees steal this game? They played better and executed when it counted. There weren’t any bogus calls or anything where the Orioles could claim that they were robbed.
That’s one small step for Matsui …
One giant step for the Yanks …
Remembering the July 20, 1969 moon walk, 40 years ago today.
“I decided it was good I didn’t spike that ball…I got that closing speed” Phil Coke, ladies and gentlemen.
I read somewhere that Matsui speaks and understands English fairly well, but is just more comfortable with the translator.

Better than Mega-Streisand (for South Park lovers, lol)
Bah Bu Rah Bah Bu Rah, look out for Sydney Poitier
Note to Boston: you don’t need anyone at the trade deadline. Smoltz is fine. Stick with him.
Mets rejected a package of Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and Ruben Tejada for Halladay.
I could listen to Coke’s post-game interviews all day long. He’s so nutty.
By the way – did anyone watch Francesa’s show last night. The topic of AJ Burnettt and walkoff pies came up. AJ said how once when someone got a walkoff, Mo started getting on AJ, telling him – go go go (get the pie ready). That should pretty much end the discussion if its “ok” or not to do the walk off pies.
Or Leonard Maltin (or is it Mega-Maltin)……..
To this point, the rest that the AS break supplied has paid dividends.

……………………………………
You obviously haven’t been in Needles in August.
Laura – I’ve read the same thing. If you look closely when Matsui gives interviews you can see nods of acknowledgement when the reporter asks a question. Tonight, for example, when the reporter (I think it was Kim Jones) said “Those plays at home plate” Matsui nodded immediately. I’m not saying I know for a fact but it does seem like the translator is more of a comfort thing than a necessity.
Something about that mets tweet bothers me.
First, why is JP chasing the mets? Is the market for Halladay that slow?
Second, who leaked it to Heyman?
Yanks won a 2-1 game without needing Hughes and without needing Mo.
That those guys could get some rest makes it even sweeter.
Betsy
July 20th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Or Leonard Maltin (or is it Mega-Maltin)……..
the one you really have to watch for is the guy from the cure
I saw that interview – always love seeing AJ, lol. That wasn’t the first time AJ mentioned that. He was referring to the Philly start where he got bombed. AJ was sitting in the clubhouse, depressed at his outing, and Mo encouraged him to pie Melky. I remember people being surprised because by then AJ was already showered and changed – they didn’t expect the SP to do the pieing.
woohhh Pete is on Moose’s Yankeeography! awesome

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You’re right! Matsui can be devious — remember the marriage bet with Jetes and Abreu? Nicely done.
Robert Smith? LOL
isn’t it a good sign when relievers are goofy? I don’t think I’d want Mussina closing games for me with is long memory.
Needles? Who are you, Snoopy’s brother?
Come on Linebrink.
Rangers and Yankees battling for the AL lead in HRs over the next 2 days – sweet.
“Needles? Who are you, Snoopy’s brother?”
Betsy – yeah exactly. Thanks for the refresher I didn’t remember that he’d addressed it before until you mentioned it. Either way I think it’s cool to tone down the excessive, businessmen mentality of the Yanks (that’s just the fan in me speculating/interpreting that the Yanks are too businesslike, of course)
So, the last two days: 6 runs, all via the long ball.
M, I don’t get why JP was doing the chasing and not the other way around. I realize he wants to cause the other team “pain”, but I just don’t see how requesting a very mediocre package from the Mets does anything for the Jays. Ok, so it would ravage the Mets’ system…….big deal – the Mets’ system isn’t good and even a secondary package from teams like the Yankees (or whomever) would be better. I don’t think Baseball Tonight led with this story, so maybe it’s just a Heyman thing – who knows if it’s true?
1. I heard Suzyn say once that the reason Matsui does interveiws in Japanese is so the Japanese media can listen in.
2. The Mets aren’t doing anything to add payroll. Not after the Wilpons lost 500M in the Madoff scandal. I would think they’re looking to take money out of the team to make up some for their losses. I would be really surprised to see them trade for Halladay or any big name, big money player.
OK … I …. ummm … aaahhh … hmmmmmm … I get it …. I think ….
M, I don’t get why JP would be the chaser and not the chasee – makes no sense. I understand his goal is to cause the other team pain, but the Mets’ system is pretty bad – he could get a much better secondary package from teams like the Yankee (or even maybe Philly)…..Just odd. I don’t think they led off with this on Baseball Tonight, so maybe it’s Heyman blowing smoke
Rainout tomorrow…does Mitre get skipped then?
what is going on with alfonso soriano??…
“Rainout tomorrow…does Mitre get skipped then?”
Good question–guess it’s how everyone else lines up, maybe?
“Something about that mets tweet bothers me.
First, why is JP chasing the mets? Is the market for Halladay that slow?
1. To the Phillies to up the ante.
2. Probably someone in Toronto’s organization to get the Phillies to up the ante.
There is a debate as to whether the Mets are actually going to be ’sellers.’
2nd shot at Santana?
Crawford had a stand-up inside the park HR tonight. Speed kills.
Betsy,
I think I saw somewhere that the Phillies and the Jays had actually gotten to the point where they were discussing players.
Can’t imagine that it had gotten to that point with the mets. I mean, c’mon.
“Crawford had a stand-up inside the park HR tonight. Speed kills.”
I had one of those in little league.
“2nd shot at Santana?”
That’s not happening. How about Livan?
Rainout tomorrow…does Mitre get skipped then?
…………………………………..
Rainout? Rainout? Already? Before the game starts? No more rainouts, I forbid it.
Come on New York, it’s July, almost August, turn off your sprinklers already!
Yanks at home, BoSox on the road, it’s time to take over the AL East…….I do need 2 more runs in Arlington..10 runs and I turn a nice profit for the evening….
I still can’t get over the fact that
Jason Bartlett is hitting .345 with 20SB already.
They can’t have another rain out tomorrow unless they don’t have a choice.
They already play 30 games over the next 31 days because of two rain outs as it is.
M, last I heard, Philly isn’t budging on Drabek. I would be fine if Doc just stayed put, but I don’t think that’s happening
“Mets rejected a package of Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and Ruben Tejada for Halladay.”
WTH
YOU DO IT IF YOUR THE METS
What were they thinking ? he’s going to Philly
Paging Pel!
And Pete makes his Yankeeography debut!
Brandon: If the Wilpons took the $700 million hit from Madoff, the reason they rejected the deal is simple: They don’t have the money to pay Halladay.
Whoa, just saw you on the Moose Yankeeography.
Angel Berroa must be due for a Yankeeography soon, one would think.
Srsly what are the Mets thinking, Johan, Doc in the NL and you keep him away from Philly or ATL…oh man this gonna hurt thier fanbase.
RT @keithlaw: Mets-Jays trade report (Jays offered Doc for Martinez, Tejada, Niese, Parnell) is bogus. Shot down by multiple sources.
oh man i miss mussina
Rebecca,
Thanks for that. Guess my intuition’s working tonight.
“Brandon: If the Wilpons took the $700 million hit from Madoff, the reason they rejected the deal is simple: They don’t have the money to pay Halladay.”
Rebecca no offense but they have to keep him away from Philly LOL..we sure as hell will not get him for that price, but they sure as hell can. F-Mart/Niese/Pharnell ? YOU DO IT !
hello first place, its nice to see you again
Ah, Rebecca – thanks. It didn’t seem right on multiple levels – what was Jon Heyman thinking?
“RT @keithlaw: Mets-Jays trade report (Jays offered Doc for Martinez, Tejada, Niese, Parnell) is bogus. Shot down by multiple sources.”
LOL Heyman or Law… I’ll believe in Heyman on this one.
Wow, how bad is Cincy? Spotted a 3-0 lead in the top of the half, they proceed to give it right back. All of it and more.
Kruk got it right: These are games that the Yankees lost last year.
Hey all!
There is something really sweet about coming home to find another Yankee win (despite being unable to watch because of a previous commitment) but also being able to catch the end of the Sux game where it appears pretty certain another loss is on its way.
When I was listening to the Suxers game on the radio all I could think of was how nice it felt to truly never have worried an ounce about the Red Sox and to actually seem justified in having taken that position, at least so far so good!
GO RANGERS!
Gammons looks like he could puke on the set of baseball tonight as they talk up the Yankees. He doesnt even bother hiding his bias anymore, ridiculous.
I missed Baseball Tonight – what did they say?
It is very likely that the Jays put out the “trade offer” to get the Phillies nervous and see if they will offer a better package. It would make sense since Philly is the team you hear has the best shot. Maybe Heyman is a JP buddy just like he is a Boras one. I am sure the Jays are hoping to get Drabek put on the table.
Cliff lee and Victor Martinez may be on the block
Gammons is in mourning over Smoltz’ meltdown…
Pie-zilla.
Yes, that’s Hideki’s ear.
Let me tell you a story. Japanese people believe that a baby that has large earlobes (that can support a grain of rice) will grow up and be wealthy.
I wonder if Hideki’s father did backflips when he saw how big his son’s earlobes were?
WELCOME BACK TO FIRST PLACE YANKS!!!!!
YES!!!!.. Tampa loses !!!!
Nice Bobby Jenks.
White Sox win 4-3 over Rays.
The game was incredibly close. After getting two strikeouts in the ninth inning, Jenks walked two batters and gave up a single, then had a 3-2 count on Bartlett with the bases loaded.
My suggestion is to play that roaring Godzilla sound evertime Matsui hits a home run.
You know…that roar Godzilla makes when he’s about to eat Tokyo or sees Mothra.
Anyhoo….Got my MVP Box seat at the God-forsaken Coliseum for the Wednesday night game with the A’s next month….STOLKED!
where can I see the video that “Godzilla got the pie”? I would love to see it.
