Is that a great Godzilla picture or what? The Yankees should sell a T-shirt with that image on it.

  2. Johnny D.

    GO-JI-RAH!

This team came off the break hot. Hopefully we can produce runs other ways, though.

  3. Yeah

Dang. We’ve outscored our opponents 6-3 over the last three games. Dang.

  4. jennifer

Lots of great defensive plays that contributed to this win.

Obviously the play by Tex, and Coke stand out. But Cano’s play to fool the runner was huge as well. They didn’t hit, but it was a well played game.

  5. Erica - always OPPC

Boston is winning 2-1. Texas is still right there. By the end of this night we could be back in a 1st place tie…..

  6. Dan from Mass

And 2-2, man on 2nd, no outs in Texas. A tie for first would make this a perfect night.

  7. Erica - always OPPC

Okay- Right after I typed that, Texas tied it up! I am a prophet!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Uncle Ellsworth

Pete thanks for the quick Post – game post!
    Game Thread get slooooooooow.

  9. Betsy

I was watching a Moon special, so I missed the defensive plays, but I caught them on the highlights……..wow!!

  10. Johnny D.

Even if we don’t tie for first tonight, it’s still a perfect night. Sometimes you gotta just watch your own team.

  11. jennifer

AJ is losing his touch. He didn’t get Matsui too good.

  12. Trevor

    Lets go Rangers!

  13. S.A.--Serenity Now

Okay, that picture of godzilla makes me laugh.

  14. Laura - I'm ready for the second half. Are the Yankees??

Three straight 2-1 wins is amazing. Last year’s team doesn’t win those games. Things are looking up.

  15. bru

    smoltz is pitching well lately.

    any score with the rays???

i got gavin floyd in my fantasy against the rays.

    rolled the dice.

  16. Laura - I'm ready for the second half. Are the Yankees??

“AJ is losing his touch. He didn’t get Matsui too good.”

He’s been focusing on his pitching. His pie making duties are taking a back seat. LOL!

  17. DaveO

    Smoltz looks terrible

  18. jennifer

    Laura

Diet Coke will be happy about that. ;)

  19. NYY626

    3-2 :)

  20. Benny Blanco

They might as well mail the gold glove award to tex.

    BTW. 2-2 in texas

  21. islesfan

The big stories coming out of this game were Andy’s pitching and the Yankees defense. Can’t always bludgeon the other team into submission. Gotta win games like this in the playoffs. How big is it to have a gold glove at 1st base? How many games did Giambi’s lack of defense cost them? Tex was such a great signing.

  22. bru

    matsui looked embarrased

  23. KLev

Nice tight game. Good pitching. Good D. Nice wrap. Under 3 hrs.

  24. kav

    texas just tied it up!!!!!!!!

  25. Laura - I'm ready for the second half. Are the Yankees??

“They might as well mail the gold glove award to tex.”

You would think. We watch the games so we see the plays he makes each and every game. Do the voters?

  26. Christina- pictures from AAA Yanks game

    haha, nice picture of Godzilla

  27. A-rod will never get it

    Tex takes the lead

  28. Laura - I'm ready for the second half. Are the Yankees??

“Tex was such a great signing.”

So far, he’s been worth every dime.

  29. jennifer

I liked Jason when he was here. But I don’t miss him one bit. Love the dp’s that Tex is turning. We never saw that with Jason. Any guesses as to how many games Tex has saved with his glove. Today is one for sure.

  30. Betsy

Jen, I loved seeing AJ’s sneak attack, though – he’s hilarious, just like a little boy

  31. A-rod will never get it

    3-2 Texas!!

    That picture cracked me up.

Just listened to “Godzilla” by Blue Oyster Cult as celebration!

  35. Buck Nasty

Tell ya what Giambi never makes that play Teix made, I love the big Stache, but I have a bromance on Teix

  36. Betsy

    Smoltz pitched lousy last out…………..

No way does this team win games like this last year. We know they can score, but it’s more satisfying sometimes to win games like this because this is the type of ball played in the post-season

  37. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus

Unsung hero of that game was the 8th inning defense

  38. Nick in SF

The Rangers are hitting homers faster than LoHud commenters can keep up. Bye-bye Smoltzie!

    6-2 Texas.

I am going to go far out on a limb and say that before the end of Texs’ time in New York…Captian will be next to it.

  41. Patrick the Prospect Hugger

YEAAAHHH Smoltz is falling apart, gave up back-to-back jacks!

  42. Steve

    5-2 Boston losing

  43. Johnny D.

    LOL! Sox are screwed.

  44. Jerkface

The benefit of good pitching is that you can weather offensive slumps. We had to face some very very good pitchers and the offense kind of carried that into this game, but our pitching and defense helped get them through it.

Thats why this yankee team can win the world series.

  45. Johnny D.

    6-2 Rangers!

    1st place here we come.

  50. EY

lol Smoltz imploded. Thanks Texas. Looks like we go back to tied for first again tonight.

I wonder how the other old man making a comeback Pedro will turn out. (Hopefully he implodes as well and the Phillies will have to make a run for Halladay)

  51. bru

    rays losing also

  52. Noreaster

Cool picture Pete. I love our pitching, D and power.

  53. Wang IS Taiwan

“Unsung hero of that game was the 8th inning defense”

Totally agree. That kind of defense makes me laugh out loud. THAT’S why I love this game.

Superb showing by the guys. Just wish Andy could have gotten the win he worked so hard for, but the W is probably making him plenty happy.

  54. Pepitone

Smoltz fell into a burnin ring of fire!! He went down down down, and the flames went higher, and it burns burns burns ……

Another home run, die, die, die, Red Stockings!!!!!!!

  55. Joe

And, the Riverdogs won 6-1, led by a 5-run 5th inning. Both managers, Torre Tyson and Ernie Young, were ejected in the 1st and 3rd innings, respectively. Finally, a winning streak!

Here’s a link to a boxscore of the game:

    http://www.riverdogs.com/dogs/.....rtcode=afx

  56. Laura - I'm ready for the second half. Are the Yankees??

Let me pull a Matt here and say that the Yankee offense does need to find a way to play all 9 innings. Those middle 4 innings are brutal. They just go away. I don’t know where they go or why, but they don’t get involved in the game until the 7th inning. It would be nice to win the game in the 4th inning and coast the rest of the way.

    End of Matt rant. :P

Matsui in the post-game (via Suzyn): “I totally forgot he (AJ) does that.”

  59. DaveO

Glad to watch the Sox unravel, up here in Boston they’re getting a little uppity. I had to hear on WEEI last month how they longed for the days of the 2 teams actually being competitive.

  60. Boston Dave 2.0

Smoltz is back baby! Shutting down the Rangers already through 5. Sox are the best. Yay Red Sox!

(that is my best impression of some of the likely posts on SOSH (and here) about 20 minutes ago)

  61. m

    Nice…

But check out what’s going on in Arlington…

  62. islesfan

The Pennant Race starts now, with both teams all even.

I also loved Cabrera and Arod motioning for Matsui to throw his helmet into the air.

  64. Scorpio

oohlala…Gammons on BT. I love when he’s on and the Red Sox have imploded!

  65. GreenBeret7

Lost in the shuffle was Coke sticking his body in front of the plate and forcing Roberts to slide wide of the plate.

  66. Patrick the Prospect Hugger

Nice one Pepitone, I love that song.

  67. Benny Blanco

Hey smoltz, welcome to the American League! Where giving up three homeruns happen.

  68. Betsy

Tex is the best first baseman I’ve seen since Mattingly – no one will ever touch Donnie in my eyes, but boy, Tex is absolutely superb. If he doesn’t get the gold glove this year, then there is no justice in this world.

  69. Pepitone

Matsui is not longer Godzilla …

    He is now MegaGodzilla.

    ——–

In his prime, Smoltz would have been fantastic in either the NL or the AL.

Unfortunately, this offseason some people forgot that he was 40 and coming off of major surgery.

I’m pretty sure that’s not “his prime”.

  71. Patrick the Prospect Hugger

Wow Jennifer Swindal Steinbrenner is frightening.

    Laura,

Check out this tweet by Heyman, it’s so crass (and incorrect?):

boy, mark teixeira is worth every penny. for those scoring at home, that’s 18 billion of ‘em.
12:59 PM Jul 19th from web

  77. Joe from Long Island

Two big plays – Cano deeking the runner from 1st, may have kept him from trying to score; and Coke putting his glove right on the edge of home plate, forcing Roberts to either slide into the tag or slide away from home plate. I wonder if that’s something that’s taught to pitchers, or just good fortune that that’s where Coke put his glove.

Yanks are now within 3 games of the best record in all of baseball.

If/when that happens, the “they can’t beat the good teams” argument doesn’t hold up as well (if it ever did).

If you have the best record in baseball this late in the season, you’re doing something right.

AJ got him good with that pie. Matsui had no clue it was coming.

    Nick,

I didn’t realize everyone was following.

I just couldn’t believe when I saw a 6-2 score. And then I saw 3 homeruns in one inning.

Sorry, I got excited and didn’t read before I wrote.

But no, I wouldn’t recommend a trip to Arlington.

  100. islesfan

How did the Yankees steal this game? They played better and executed when it counted. There weren’t any bogus calls or anything where the Orioles could claim that they were robbed.

  101. Pepitone

That’s one small step for Matsui …

One giant step for the Yanks …

Remembering the July 20, 1969 moon walk, 40 years ago today.

  107. vin

I could listen to Coke’s post-game interviews all day long. He’s so nutty.

  108. Dave

By the way – did anyone watch Francesa’s show last night. The topic of AJ Burnettt and walkoff pies came up. AJ said how once when someone got a walkoff, Mo started getting on AJ, telling him – go go go (get the pie ready). That should pretty much end the discussion if its “ok” or not to do the walk off pies.

You obviously haven’t been in Needles in August.

  112. Dave

Laura – I’ve read the same thing. If you look closely when Matsui gives interviews you can see nods of acknowledgement when the reporter asks a question. Tonight, for example, when the reporter (I think it was Kim Jones) said “Those plays at home plate” Matsui nodded immediately. I’m not saying I know for a fact but it does seem like the translator is more of a comfort thing than a necessity.

  113. m

Something about that mets tweet bothers me.

First, why is JP chasing the mets? Is the market for Halladay that slow?

Second, who leaked it to Heyman?

  116. Betsy

I saw that interview – always love seeing AJ, lol. That wasn’t the first time AJ mentioned that. He was referring to the Philly start where he got bombed. AJ was sitting in the clubhouse, depressed at his outing, and Mo encouraged him to pie Melky. I remember people being surprised because by then AJ was already showered and changed – they didn’t expect the SP to do the pieing.

  125. Dave

Betsy – yeah exactly. Thanks for the refresher I didn’t remember that he’d addressed it before until you mentioned it. Either way I think it’s cool to tone down the excessive, businessmen mentality of the Yanks (that’s just the fan in me speculating/interpreting that the Yanks are too businesslike, of course)

  126. m

So, the last two days: 6 runs, all via the long ball.

  127. Betsy

M, I don’t get why JP was doing the chasing and not the other way around. I realize he wants to cause the other team “pain”, but I just don’t see how requesting a very mediocre package from the Mets does anything for the Jays. Ok, so it would ravage the Mets’ system…….big deal – the Mets’ system isn’t good and even a secondary package from teams like the Yankees (or whomever) would be better. I don’t think Baseball Tonight led with this story, so maybe it’s just a Heyman thing – who knows if it’s true?

  128. Joe from Long Island

    1. I heard Suzyn say once that the reason Matsui does interveiws in Japanese is so the Japanese media can listen in.

    2. The Mets aren’t doing anything to add payroll. Not after the Wilpons lost 500M in the Madoff scandal. I would think they’re looking to take money out of the team to make up some for their losses. I would be really surprised to see them trade for Halladay or any big name, big money player.

  159. Brandon... I'M AWESOME ! (Say No to DOC!)

“RT @keithlaw: Mets-Jays trade report (Jays offered Doc for Martinez, Tejada, Niese, Parnell) is bogus. Shot down by multiple sources.”
LOL Heyman or Law… I’ll believe in Heyman on this one.

  160. m

Wow, how bad is Cincy? Spotted a 3-0 lead in the top of the half, they proceed to give it right back. All of it and more.

  161. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus

Kruk got it right: These are games that the Yankees lost last year.

    Hey all!

There is something really sweet about coming home to find another Yankee win (despite being unable to watch because of a previous commitment) but also being able to catch the end of the Sux game where it appears pretty certain another loss is on its way.

When I was listening to the Suxers game on the radio all I could think of was how nice it felt to truly never have worried an ounce about the Red Sox and to actually seem justified in having taken that position, at least so far so good!

    GO RANGERS!

    :)

  163. Gopher

Gammons looks like he could puke on the set of baseball tonight as they talk up the Yankees. He doesnt even bother hiding his bias anymore, ridiculous.

  164. Betsy

I missed Baseball Tonight – what did they say?

  165. CaptainsCorner

It is very likely that the Jays put out the “trade offer” to get the Phillies nervous and see if they will offer a better package. It would make sense since Philly is the team you hear has the best shot. Maybe Heyman is a JP buddy just like he is a Boras one. I am sure the Jays are hoping to get Drabek put on the table.

  166. carl

Cliff lee and Victor Martinez may be on the block

  167. Todd

Gammons is in mourning over Smoltz’ meltdown…

    Pie-zilla.

    Yes, that’s Hideki’s ear.

Let me tell you a story. Japanese people believe that a baby that has large earlobes (that can support a grain of rice) will grow up and be wealthy.

I wonder if Hideki’s father did backflips when he saw how big his son’s earlobes were?

  170. GGBG

Words cannot describe how much I love this team. They have “it”.

Cliff Lee and V-Mart won’t get dealt, they’ll get dangled but not dealt.

Can we steal Jonathan Sanchez already.

  173. RS

OMG Castillo’s dropped pop-up is officially a Yankee Classic.

  174. Trevor

Damn Tampa has the bases loaded in the 9th.

WELCOME BACK TO FIRST PLACE YANKS!!!!!

  177. Mike RI

    YES!!!!.. Tampa loses !!!!

  178. Trevor

    Nice Bobby Jenks.

  179. RS

White Sox win 4-3 over Rays.

The game was incredibly close. After getting two strikeouts in the ninth inning, Jenks walked two batters and gave up a single, then had a 3-2 count on Bartlett with the bases loaded.

  180. MJR (Shut Up Steve Phillips)

My suggestion is to play that roaring Godzilla sound evertime Matsui hits a home run.

You know…that roar Godzilla makes when he’s about to eat Tokyo or sees Mothra.

Anyhoo….Got my MVP Box seat at the God-forsaken Coliseum for the Wednesday night game with the A’s next month….STOLKED!

  181. Cindy

where can I see the video that “Godzilla got the pie”? I would love to see it.
