Today in The Journal News
Joba Chamberlain came back from Nebraska looking like his old self.
It was a special Old Timers’ Day for Mike Mussina and Don Zimmer. Jake Thomases has the story.
Mark Teixeira is starting to heat up. This notebook also has updates on two hot relievers.

Some of the guys were on the Today Show this morning.
Or so I was told.
CC, Alex and Tex are on Regis and Kelly today.
Anyone hearing the journalistic abortion that Craig Carton is this morning???
They’re on now.
CC is on ABC as well….I believe ARod’s jeans are rolled at the bottom…ugh.
Carton is not a journalist, he is a radio personality!
AmyKNelson Kelly Ripa just asked CC Sabathia if he’s the largest player in the big leagues. His response? “I have the biggest pants.”
“CC is on ABC as well….I believe ARod’s jeans are rolled at the bottom…ugh.”
He can wear capris for all I care, as long as he keeps hitting like he has been for the past few games.
“Anyone hearing the journalistic abortion that Craig Carton is this morning”
no. I only listened to the show when he was away on vacation. Craig Carton is human debris
They keep asking CC about his weight. damn
Thanks for the heads-up on the guys on TV. Made my morning!

So it’s just a normal day on the air, right?
CC is a big guy. Can’t get around that. But he doesn’t strike me as “fat” – just big.
Didn’t see the new thread, repost from last ….
I’m hoping Bruney gets more opportunities. We saw last year and early this year that when he’s healthy he is a very reliable set-up reliever.
I don’t want him in a spot where the game is on the line but he needs innings. When he gets himself on the right track he could be a huge help in the 6th-8th inning.
A good Bruney, Aceves, Coke, Hughes, Rivera is a pretty phenomenal bullpen.
By the way, who goes down for Mitre? Looks like the choices are Robertson, Melancon or DFA Tomko. I’d love it if they DFA Tomko but if I had to choose between Robertson and Melancon I’d keep Melancon up and send Robertson down.
It’ll probably be Melancon. They aren’t going to risk losing Tomko entirely when they can avoid it.

That’s a tough call as you could find evidence that all of those guys have done something to warrant staying and something to warrant being sent down (or DFA’d)…they are all pretty close in my book at this point, so with that I would say send down whoever has options left.
It will definitely be Melancon, although I hope Girardi is in a good position to use him tonight – like a 10 run lead in the 9th inning.
have they been talking about CC being fat or just a big dude? The guy is large, no getting around that…but he’s not fat

Hes going on and on about how Erin Andrews put this video out on here own. He doesn’t buy that she was a crime victim.
patrick-
bruney and wang after lisfranc injuries have not been able to stay healthy. there may be no connection, but i think there likely is. having a severe foot injury like that puts a lot of burden on the arm when they come back.
bruney seems to have made a career being on the disabled list. not sure how much the yankees will get out of him.
Mo is definitely unavailable tonight and I would imagine Girardi is going to try and avoid using Hughes tonight.
So expect to see Aceves pitch a couple of innings tonight.
The goal this week is 5-2 over the remaining 7 games.
That gives them two series’ wins and a high watermark of 20 games over .500 for the season.
Anything better than that is gravy.
randy,
Bruney was effective last year after coming back.
One key difference in Wang and Bruney’s injuries. Bruney didn’t undergo surgery, he went the rest/rehab route.
I’m certainly not banking on Bruney being effective and the bullpen is good without him but it would sure be nice to get him pitching well.
I hope Tomko is DFA’d because he is clearly the worst pitcher on the staff. If that’s not an option I’d rather the Yankees keep Melancon.
Oh if only Tomko DFA’ed was the roster move tomorrow to get Mitre on the roster. Tomko’s only redeeming quality is what, that he can pitch 3 innings at a time if a starter gets blown out or hurt? I don’t understand how that is something valuable that needs to be held on to. He is worse than both Robertson and Melancon at this point.
With Pettitte going tonight and Mo/Hughes likely unavailable I think you’re right, Franco.
I think tonight is when we see Bruney, Melancon or Robertson pitch key innings.
Let’s say Pettitte goes 5 and the game is close I could see Melancon 6, Bruney 7, Coke 8, Ace 9.
You hope Pettitte goes more than 5 but I’d like to see Melancon and Bruney get a shot to contribute. Ace is the best available reliever so I would think Girardi would keep him for a save.
“Hes going on and on about how Erin Andrews put this video out on here own. He doesn’t buy that she was a crime victim.”
What the…
I am pretty outraged right now. Unfortunately the words coming out of my mouth won’t get through the filter on the blog.
Arod looks small compared to tex even on tv today, is tex that big?
Wow Carton is really saying that? Pretty despicable..
What I heard on WFAN this morning is horrific. What can we do about it? I think it’s suspension-worthy.
Yes, I’m sure Erin Andrews needs to do something that drastic to get men to notice her.
She’s not Paris Hilton.
It’s too bad Andrews can’t really sue him. That’s the cost of being a celebrity.
People can assassinate your character all they want and there’s not a whole lot you can do about it.
Was at the Stadium yesterday and was not surprised that Joba delivered that effort.
I was sitting in Terrace and while watching Thomas’ shot sail out, my buddy and I both agreed Joba was going to get mad and amp it up there after. We both figured, the way he was pitching, they’d get nothing else off him, and they did not.
What I loved was that he was just entirely rhythmic from then on – it was high tide and he just kept bringing it. Got to admit it was pretty emotional – Girardi coming to get him, as usual, was his typical letter of the law move rather than letting the spirit of the law guide his decision (Joba was so grooving it and not laboring at all), but I was too happy to even complain about this.
Hughes then comes in and just looks like he did the first time I laid eyes on him in Trenton, when he was putting his FB anywhere he wanted to.
For people like me and Patrick the Prospect Hugger (and others of that ilk whose usernames I can’t recall), it was a dramatic rebuttal for those cavalier know-it-alls who would send Joba packing at 23 for Halladay with not so much as a glance backward.
The fact that this happened on OTD made it all the more poignant.
We had an idiot behind us insisting Joba is not a starter – and very loudly lest anyone miss out on his wisdom. This guy was relentless, even as Joba’s every pitch was blowing holes into his argument.
My new practice is, let stupid people be stupid; it is their God-given right. Didn’t want to waster energy and miss what was basically a liberating “Bleep You” effort from and for Joba – and that’s the kid at his best. The fist-pump celebration after he got Thames was just s wonderfully in-the-moment – anyone who thinks Joba is bush is ridiculous; he’s all emotional release in those moments.
This “Yankee” fan: “Thanks Joba – you still suck” – stood out in relief compared to the extremely civilized Detroit fans sitting next to us (of course, there were civilized Yankee fans all around us, but they weren’t all that vocal; the contrast of this guy’s insults to Joba and the Detroit fan’s intelligent in-game commentary to his companion were striking, that’s all).
And thanks for losing yesterday, Boston. See – Halladay can help us win a pennant without giving a single young stud away
.
I bet it was David Wright who filmed that video without Andrew’s consent.
Underneath that “aw shucks” exterior probably lies a perverted scum bag.
last fall, Carton was speaking of Halloween and being a father. He mentioned when a person puts a cache of candy out for trick or treaters with a note asking the children to “only take 1 or 2″, he instructs his children to empty the entire cache into their bags. In his words: “I told my kids if people are dumb enough to put candy out like that, they deserve that to happen”
he was serious
The trouble with the Melancon thing is – there just aren’t many ‘low leverage’ opportunities any more. The Yankees might be waiting forever for one of those.
Rarely do we blow teams out – the pitching is just too good these days. And because we’re in a race for the division, there are virtually no ‘low leverage’ games.
You don’t have to bring him in with the bases juiced, if that’s scary territory for you as the manager (people forget he got out of such a situation in Boston, and only remember the Angels’ home game, but whatever) – but you have to let him pitch.
Melancon should not be sent down again. People think our BP is good now? Let this kid have a little action and he’ll get into a comfort zone and show people who aren’t that familiar with him what a worthy arm he has.
The Yankees need to get him into games now if he’s going to help us down the stretch. They’re being overly cautious with the wrong guy.
I don’t want Melancon or Bruney coming in a tie game or a 1 run game in the 8th inning. But I’d like to see them throw meaningful innings earlier in the game. Tonight could be the night we see them.
They couldn’t even spell Texieira’s name right every time they showed his name on Regis.
They spelled his name Texieria every time they showed him.
Agree on Bruney – philosophically would trust Melancon in that situation; but they aren’t going to do that with Hughes sitting in the BP.
The thing about Melancon is he can give you more than one inning at a time.
===============================================
We should hire Mickey Rivers to mentor Gardner. Heck, Rivers looks like he could still be an effective pinch runner.

I saw Rivers in Tampa this spring working with the players at Spring Training.
carton is a pervert… he tries to flirt with every woman on his show.. also keeps asking women about their marital life (like its relevant to the show)… if not for boomer, that show would have no listeners…
I know that everyone here wants the Yankees to get Roy Halladay, but I have a feeling that if the Yankees do make a trade before the deadline it will be for a relief pitcher. Huston Street and Heath Bell are the first choices but they unavailable. Jose Valverde, on the other hand, is available and he would come cheap.
Huston Street is going nowhere. The Rockies are half a game out of the wild card
Cashman will make a deal for a journeymen starter. That is all that is needed.
Bodh: Great post. Include me in the list of extreme Joba fans. I have been following him since he first came up and have been in some big/nasty discussions with non-fans of Joba. I’m am so glad that the “Joba to the pen” people have pretty much given up on that. Now it is poor Phil’s turn.
Your description of the game is perfect. When he is pitching he is very stoic, usually, but lets that emotion out when he gets a tough out. If Joba played in KC or Phoenix he would not get the scrutiny or bad publicity for his on the mound activities.
Was so pleased that he went home to Nebraska for the ASG break. His dad has always been closest to him and a task master so the visit was a wise choice.
Yesterday’s Joba was the old Joba of 07 and 08. If you haven’t already, please read Rebecca’s “Joba Theory”. It is well written and offers a great theory.
Your post made my day!!
