Happy birthday to CC Sabathia. He is 29 today.

Happy Birthday, CC!
I fell asleep last night listening to Met callers call into Tony Paige and get frustrated by the Mets supposedly rejecting the Jays offer. Boy, I admit I’m still bothered by that. I don’t know if Heyman is correct (he was on SNY last night confirming his report), but if so – wow. I just don’t understand why JP is the one proposing deals instead of letting them come to him. Is he that desperate? It also bothers me that the Yankees asked him (yes, I’m aware that other teams probably asked JP as well) to call them before he’s made any final decision – and JP didn’t do that. If Heyman’s earlier report that JP didn’t return the Yankees prior call from 10 days ago is true, that’s also annoying because it just shows a lack of courtesy.
Halladay on the Mets – I can’t believe it came thisclose to happening (and still might).
somebody said jesus had 7 rbi yesterday. not saying their lying, but i checked the boxscore wasn’t there
Also – trading Halladay (Tony Paige kept calling him Holladay – ugh) means the Jays are folding their tents for the next couple of years. WHY would it matter (unless JP has too much pride) if Doc ends up on a division rival? The Jays aren’t going to win anyway. They will never have this chance again – even a B package from the Yankees can top an A package from the Mets (for sure) and from most teams). I also found it interesting that Sportscenter/Baseball Tonight did not lead off with this story – or even get to it after a few game highlights. Confirmation that the report is not true? Who knows.
I don’t believe that rumor for a minute. Riccardi needs to hit a home run with any Halladay deal and that is far from it.
Secondly, you also can’t assume Halladay would agree to that deal. He wants to win and he would have no better shot to win with the Mets this season than with the Jays.
That organization is a mess and Halladay certainly knows it. I’m not sure he would even accept to go there.
Pete do you have any color on the Mets-Jays deal. That seems to be a foolish trade for the Jays … and hard to believe that it was actutally true. Thanks
Keith Law from ESPN . and per MLBTRADERUMORS.COM said the “offer” was bogus . So who knows. Heyman has been wrong a MILLION times.
“somebody said jesus had 7 rbi yesterday. not saying their lying, but i checked the boxscore wasn’t there”
I’m assuming they really meant morneau because justin morneau had 7 rbi last night.
Great wins all, since the break! Impressive and a bit lucky. What the hell happened to offense?
good point
“Great wins all, since the break! Impressive and a bit lucky. What the hell happened to offense?”
Great pitching shutting them down
Good Morning from 1st place all…
By the way, GB7 stated that if Halladay gets traded to the Mets this season, he can demand a trade after the season according to the CBA due to his long-term contract. That was true at one time, but is no longer the case, since they’ve renegotiated that player option out of the CBA a few years back.
By the way, I have a hard time believing that Met rumor because I don’t think Toronto gets back much in return for Halladay, especially with Martinez being on the DL for the next 6-8 weeks after knee surgery.
You can’t trade a player that is on the DL.
Only Yankee “fans” can complain about wins, even though these wins have them in a tie for first place.
2-1 wins aren’t “lucky”. It’s the byproduct of good pitching and defense. Things championship teams must possess.
Sj, couldnt agree with you more.
Hard to believe the Mets could get the 2 best pitchers in baseball for absolutely nothing.
Highway robbery at it’s best.
“Only Yankee “fans” can complain about wins, even though these wins have them in a tie for first place.”
I have to wonder if they’re really Yankee fans or at the very least, the concept of MLB players winning close baseball games.
I cracked up at the O’s announcers remarking that ‘Yanks continue to take advantage of a park that yields more homers than any other ML park’ LOL!!!! Like the Hinske and Matusi homers wouldn’t have gone out in Camden Yards!
Jon Heyman couldn’t a do a super sales effort to convince me that New Years Day is January 1st.
After listening to Gary Thorne go on and on about the new YS homerun issues I wanted to pull my hair out. What really irks me is that not one of the homers last night was a “Yankee Stadium cheapie.” What someone (with a lot of time on their hands) needs to do is look at the chart and add up all of those homers that land in the first couple rows in right field and there’s your impact. These homers hitting the second deck in right field or landing 20 + feet into the bullpen are legit homers in any park. I’m sure the slightly shorter porch in right is to blame for some, but it’s just lazy for Thorne and other guys in the media to say “X homers have been hit to left, X to center and 80+ to right, so obviously there’s an issue!” I imagine our revamped and extremely stacked lineup (with a lot of lefty power) is as equally responsible for the large home run totals as the new dimensions.
the game last night was GREAT baseball…if you can’t live with a 2-1 victory, you need to find a new sport. obviously consistency will be the real measure of success going forward, but I’m extremely pleased with the performances from Joba and Pettitte the past 2 days and our entire staff since the second half started. I’m excited (and nervous) to see what Mitre can do tonight.
does anyone have any word on Ian Kennedy?
I headr he returned to scranton last month to start a throwing program.
Wondering what his status is…
The old stadium gave up its share of “cheapies” to the rf porch, too, so you have to account for those.
The whole problem, to me, is that the NYS “specials” are devaluing the legitimate homeruns. Anyone watching the games can tell the difference; it’s the post-game reports by lazy broadcasters and people who just like to pile on the Yankees who seem to not be able to tell the difference, or who choose to ignore the difference because they want to cause a stir. It’s absolutely frustrating.
Also, I think so many homeruns were hit within the first month of the season, when the pitching was HORRIBLE, that you have to also take that into consideration.
And, the Yankees do have some legitimate power hitters in their lineup.
Also, aren’t HRs up all over baseball this year? I think I read that, but that is something that has to be taken into account as well, when making the final analysis of whether NYS is a HR mecca.
Hal Steinbrenner is correct in saying you need the data from the entire year. And you need more than just the total number of homeruns.
I do think, though, that if the data shows a problem, the problem will be addressed, if possible.
