All the cool kids are wearing them

gravitygraffix_2062_61258Nick Swisher wears a “Swisher Salute” t-shirt under his uniform most days. The shirt was designed by Bald Vinny of the Bleacher Creatures to commemorate the salute Swisher gives the crowd during the roll call.

Swisher recently got some extra t-shirts to give to teammates. Now you can have one, too. Go to BaldVinny.com to pick one up. Nobody is as nutty as Swish, but you can wear the same t-shirt.

Follow Bald Vinny on Twitter, too. He’s at Twitter.com/baldvinny.

I saw Bald Vinny at the Stadium the other day, good dude. I forgot to suggest the press box roll call. I think we’d pay big money for that.

    The Red Sox problems

It feels like the U.S.S. Red Sox is taking on water and the front office is working frantically to plug the leak, and LaRoche may or may not help. He typically is a strong second half player and is the type of hitter who can put the team on his back for a week or two weeks, but he also is known to be a sensitive sort who doesn’t like criticism. Maybe he’ll get on a serious roll, and maybe not. Maybe he’ll help the Red Sox, and maybe not.

But there are no great solutions out on the market for the Red Sox, either. They could acquire Victor Martinez, theoretically, but they would have to overpay to get him; they would have to give up their most valued asset, young pitching. They could make a move to trade for Matt Holliday, but while Holliday has had some good games this week, he hasn’t had a good season and Boston couldn’t feel 100 percent confident that he would pay off for them — and defensively, he would be a square peg for a round hole for Boston, because he would have to play right field, with Jason Bay limited to playing left.

The Red Sox are like the Cubs in this way: Simply put, the guys who are playing for them now simply must perform better.

J.D. Drew is among those Red Sox hitters buried in a slump, as Adam Kilgore writes.

Boston’s maneuvering sets them up for something big, writes Nick Cafardo, who wonders if the Red Sox might go after Roy Halladay. Mark Kotsay appears to be the odd man out.

I don’t want to trade for anyone with injury question marks…just not worth the risk.

    ———–

Don’t underestimate Sizemore. I’d love to have him on my team tomorrow and so would every other GM.

But Cleveland has no intention of trading him so it’s all a moot point.

I don’t care about his issues this season. He’s still one of the best players in the league.

Did everyone watch how Texas beat the Sox . THEY RAN like wild horses ! . Thats what we need to do. get on and run . Vertiek can not throw out runners. The Rangers had 6 stolen bases on him. ( granted not all of them were his fault). but still .

We need to put the pressure on them !. I don’t care who gets on base. JUST RUN !

    Stultus:

Ortiz was indeed booed at Fenway.

I know there’s a Boston fan who comes on here periodically and insists he’s never been booed. Not only has he, it caused an uproar on this site, and also on PSD.

Red Sox fans would like to advance the propaganda that they are more virtuous and more forgiving. But have a look:

  6. Hokiehill July 23rd, 2009 at 11:21 am

bodhisattva, you obviously didn’t get the ESPN memo…we don’t say negative things about the Red Sox or their fans! They weren’t booing Ortiz, they were awwing in sympathy for his struggles…

  7. xyz July 23rd, 2009 at 11:22 am

Odd, haven’t seen much of Christina25 or The Sox Inquizator around here lately.

    I sure hope they’re doing o.k.

    from RAB:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/spor.....ootb090723

“In the American League East race, the Red Sox just made their break from the pack.”

“Now it’s up to the Yankees and Rays. Are they content to sit back and watch, assuming they will falter, fade and eventually disappear from the rearview mirror entirely? Will they counter with any moves of their own, perhaps in the form of a Canadian pitcher? Or does Boston have one more gear left in the tank, and are just waiting for the right moment to spring it on their competition?”

“Something tells us Boston’s “yellow jersey” is closer than you might think.” (tour de franc metaphor)

    laaaaaaaaame

    Bodhi,

Thanks for the link. Then it falls into the “rarely” column. I’m certainly not saying that Sox fans are better fans, just saying that Yank fans aren’t the “best fans ever”, other than they root for the greatest team. ;)

It’s sort of silly anyway, “which team has the best fans?!?” But you can’t overlook that A-Rod was booed for nearly an entire season, and then Jeter and Mo were booed at times a few years ago.

  10. vb03 July 23rd, 2009 at 11:28 am

Very few Red Sox fans would bother coming onto here when their beloved team isn’t in first.

To those who actually do, major props.

Either way, I like the peace. :D

  11. Hokiehill July 23rd, 2009 at 11:28 am

so the Yankees need to pick up a bench player and a AAA player who’s slumping but has potential pop to keep up? Didn’t we already get Hinske…AND we already have out own Chris Duncan in one Mr. Shelley Duncan…

  12. Doreen July 23rd, 2009 at 11:29 am

Not so much “who has the best fans ever” as “who has it better than Yankees fans.”

  14. gayle July 23rd, 2009 at 11:31 am

Actually picked up this shirt as well as another great one he has done “the Texecutioner”IN addition to selling on line you can also pick them up when you go to the stadium, he sells them on River Avenue across from the old stadium. Two shirts for $25 cant beat those prices.

    I thought this was cool-

Its the last time all 30 teams had 10 game losing streaks. I am glad to report it has been the longest since the Yanks had one

    Jerkface,

that ESPN article is pretty funny. I was unaware that adding LaRoche and Chris Duncan was enough to make an “unexpected break from the pack” as he suggests. Funny stuff.

for those who want to pelter the author with email…

    But it’s comically true

com’on you know that’s got be pissing of the RS fans.

    vb03,

my Sox friends, unprovoked, have already started in with

“relax… come back in September… the Yankees have been in the rear view mirror for the better part of the last decade”

    to which I replied

“odd, because I thought the Sox had won just one division title in the last 13 seasons?”

    ==============

Wow, I saw the winning streak post, but not that.

Not only are the Yanks last there, they are WAY last, being 63 years apart from the next closest team!

  22. Hokiehill July 23rd, 2009 at 11:36 am

“Hokiehill while we’re talking about that

    Eric Hinske >>> Any Duncan”

I think we can all agree on that, but we have to compare Hinske to LaRoche…while both players will help their new teams somewhat, they will both be fillers with only so much impact on the race so how they compare is of minimal importance…the real thing I’m driving at is that if the Boston deals are what we have to worry about them “breaking from the pack” then I’m not worried.

That is hilarious. They’ve gotta be shaking in their collective boots now, with Wakefield out, they have two reliable starters, and that’s about it.

I don’t think they’ll go away, but the two teams are going in opposite directions right now.

I wrote on the other blog entry that Yanks have more fans, thus the idiot percentage is higher, relatively speaking, than any other fan base.

I will say that the ARod booing, although present, was still a minority, and I and many season ticket holders around me recoiled at it. The night Rivera was “booed” I was there also, and it was a negligible number of jerks.

I don’t wish to generalize but haha, I will: fans who consistently boo their own players are not intelligent baseball fans. They just are not.

Agree with you, Pete, on Bald Vinny.
Last season (the Final season) I had the privilege to be in the Stadium for the first time in my life. In fact, we went to two games on July (Rangers and Red Sox)
Well, prior to both games, my son and I went to Bald Vinny’s T-shirts stand, and he was really nice with us. We told him we were from México and that the main reason of our trip was to be in the Stadium, and he was happy to hear that. We acquired some T-shirts (designed by him) and took some pictures with him. A good dude. You’re right.
